If Windows says “The program can’t start because xaudio.dll is missing”, install the runtime that matches the exact filename in the message—normally Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime for legacy XAudio2.7 games—then restart Windows and use the game’s own repair or reinstall option if needed. Do not download a replacement DLL from an unverified site.
What a xaudio.dll error means
xaudio.dll is a generic way people describe a missing XAudio component. The filename shown by Windows is more important than that shorthand. A game may ask for XAudio2_7.dll, XAudio2_8.dll, XAudio2_9.dll or XAUDIO2_9REDIST.DLL, and those files belong to different parts of Microsoft’s XAudio distribution model.

XAudio is Microsoft’s audio API used by games and other multimedia software. When an application starts, Windows loads the audio library it was built to use. If that library is absent, damaged, the wrong architecture, or not installed in the location expected by the application, startup can stop with a missing-DLL or XAudio2 error. The message identifies a dependency problem; it does not, by itself, prove that Windows is infected or that your sound hardware has failed.
Match the exact filename before choosing a fix
| Filename or generation | What it usually indicates | Correct audience and first action |
|---|---|---|
XAudio2_7.dll |
Legacy XAudio2.7 from the older DirectX SDK/runtime | Consumer game or application: install Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer, then restart and retry. |
| XAudio2.8 | The XAudio generation associated with Windows 8 | Check the application’s own installer or repair package first; do not substitute an unrelated DLL. |
| XAudio2.9 | The XAudio generation associated with Windows 10 | Use the application’s supported package. A developer may need to deploy the appropriate redistributable with the program. |
XAUDIO2_9REDIST.DLL |
A redistributable deployment component supplied for applications | Usually a developer packaging issue. The application vendor should include the matching 32-bit or 64-bit package. |
This mapping is a guide, not permission to rename one file into another. A program linked to XAudio2.7 is not repaired by copying a 2.9 library and changing its name. Record the complete filename, including underscores, numbers and the REDIST suffix, before doing anything else.

Safe repair sequence for a game or application
1. Record the complete error and the affected program
- Write down the exact filename in the dialog. Capture whether it says the file is “missing,” an “entry point” cannot be found, or the application “could not start.” Those messages can point to different packaging problems.
- Note the game or application that fails and where it came from: a launcher, a boxed installer, or a direct download. The software’s own installer is often the authority on which runtime it needs.
- Do not delete, rename or replace any similarly named file in
C:WindowsSystem32,C:WindowsSysWOW64or the application folder. A name that looks close is not necessarily the required binary.
2. Check Windows and application architecture
Architecture matters because a 32-bit program needs a 32-bit library and a 64-bit program needs a 64-bit library. On Windows 10 or 11, open Settings → System → About and read System type. Windows 7 and 8 show the same information in Control Panel → System and Security → System. Then check the game’s documentation or launcher for whether the program itself is 32-bit or 64-bit.
If the error names a redistributable file, do not assume that installing one architecture is enough. The application vendor may need to ship both binaries, or the launcher may install only the architecture used by that particular game executable.
3. Install Microsoft’s official DirectX End-User Runtime
For a consumer game that reports a legacy XAudio2.7 dependency such as XAudio2_7.dll, download and run Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer from Microsoft’s official download channel. Microsoft describes its purpose this way:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →“The Microsoft DirectX® End-User Runtime installs a number of runtime libraries from the legacy DirectX SDK for some games that use D3DX9, D3DX10, D3DX11, XAudio 2.7, XInput 1.3, XACT, and/or Managed DirectX 1.1.”
This installer is the supported consumer route for legacy DirectX components used by older games. Follow the setup screens to completion. The installer may add several legacy libraries, not just the one named in your message, because games often depend on more than one component.
Do not use a third-party “DLL fixer” or a download page offering a single loose file as a substitute. Microsoft’s runtime installer and the signed installer supplied with the application preserve the component version and packaging expected by the software.
4. Restart Windows and test the same application
Restart Windows after the runtime installation, then launch the same game or program that produced the error. A restart gives Windows and the application a clean loading state. Test the original shortcut rather than a different executable so you can tell whether the original dependency has been resolved.
The runtime installation is not a promise that every XAudio error will disappear. If the message changes, record the new filename or wording; that information determines the next branch instead of repeating the same installer.
5. Run the application’s repair or verify command
If the error remains, use the launcher or installer that supplied the program. Look for a command named Verify files, Repair, Scan and repair or similar. On Windows versions that expose it, an installed app may also provide Settings → Apps → Installed apps → [the application] → Advanced options → Repair. Labels differ between launchers and Windows editions, so use the vendor’s documented command when the menus do not match.
A repair operation can restore a file that was removed or damaged and can recreate the application’s expected folder structure. It is preferable to copying a DLL by hand because the vendor’s package can select the correct XAudio generation and architecture.
6. Use a bundled DirectX installer when the game provides one
Many older games include a support directory such as SupportDirectX or a similarly named folder beside the main installer. If yours does, run the DirectX setup supplied with that game. The vendor selected that package for its build, so it may contain the exact legacy components the title expects.

Use the bundled installer only when it came from your legitimate game or application media. Do not replace it with a DLL copied from another computer, a forum attachment or an unverified download page.

7. Reinstall the game or application if its package is incomplete
If the official runtime and the application’s repair command do not restore the dependency, uninstall and reinstall the affected program from its original trusted source. Before uninstalling, back up saved games or project files if the software stores them inside its installation directory. Reinstalling refreshes the application-local files and can rerun its prerequisite setup.
After reinstalling, apply the program’s own updates and test it before adding unofficial patches or modifications. If only one game fails while other XAudio applications work, that game’s package or configuration is the more likely place to investigate.

“The program can’t start because XAudio2_7.dll is missing”
Install the official DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer, restart Windows, and try the game again. If it still fails, run the game’s bundled SupportDirectX setup or its launcher repair command, then reinstall the game if necessary. Do not download a stand-alone XAudio2_7.dll.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches“XAUDIO2_9REDIST.DLL was not found”
This filename generally points to an application deployment dependency rather than a missing legacy consumer runtime. A developer or publisher should package the XAudio2.9 redistributable with the application, using the architecture required by the executable. For an end user, run the program’s official repair or reinstall process and contact the application vendor if its installer does not provide the dependency.
“Entry point not found” or an error after copying a DLL
An entry-point error commonly means that Windows loaded a library whose interface does not match what the application expects. Remove the manually copied file only if you can identify that it was added during troubleshooting, then restore the application with its official repair or reinstall process. Reinstall the correct runtime for the exact filename instead of trying another similarly named DLL.
The installer reports that the component is already installed
That message does not prove that the specific game has the correct local dependency. Check the application’s own repair command and bundled prerequisite folder. The program may be looking for a different XAudio generation, a different architecture, or a file that belongs in its installation directory rather than a system directory.
Developer guidance: packaging XAudio2.9 correctly
If you build or distribute Windows software, treat XAUDIO2_9REDIST.DLL as an application deployment component, not as a file users should hunt for online. Microsoft’s XAudio2.9 package includes both 32-bit and 64-bit binaries and supports Windows 7 Service Pack 1 through Windows 11.
- Ship the redistributable through your signed installer or an application-local package that matches the executable’s architecture.
- Test the installed program on a clean Windows system rather than relying on a development machine that already has SDK components.
- Keep the 32-bit and 64-bit files associated with the correct program architecture; do not overwrite one with the other.
- Microsoft states that using the XAudio2.9 redistributable is preferred to redistributing the older XAudio2.7 SDK component.
- Document the supported Windows range and the package version so support staff can distinguish a deployment issue from a user’s unrelated audio configuration.
For an end user, these packaging details explain why a random DLL download is not a reliable fix: the application may require a particular binary, location and architecture together.
Why isolated DLL download sites are a poor repair path
- Wrong generation: A file named similarly to the one in your message may belong to XAudio2.8 or 2.9 rather than the legacy 2.7 runtime your game needs.
- Wrong architecture: A 32-bit library cannot satisfy a 64-bit executable’s dependency, and the reverse is also true.
- Wrong build or interface: A renamed or incompatible library can replace a clear “missing” error with an entry-point or crash error.
- Missing companion components: Older games may need several DirectX libraries. A single copied file does not recreate the runtime package.
- No vendor support path: Microsoft and the application publisher can troubleshoot their installer; they cannot validate an anonymous file copied from elsewhere.
Use Microsoft’s installer or the application’s signed installer instead. If you already copied a DLL manually, restore the program with its repair or reinstall option so the files come from one consistent package.
When to contact the application developer
Contact the game or software publisher after you have recorded the exact filename, installed the appropriate official runtime, restarted Windows, and run the application’s repair or reinstall process. Include the Windows edition, whether the system is 32-bit or 64-bit, the application version, the full error text and whether the bundled prerequisite installer ran successfully. Do not send a replacement DLL as a workaround; ask the publisher for the correct signed installer or redistributable package.
No authoritative prevalence figure establishes how common xaudio.dll errors are, so the presence of this message should be diagnosed from the filename and the affected application rather than from assumptions about a widespread Windows fault.
