If Windows says it cannot find wxmsw28u_aui_vc_custom.dll, the safest fix is to repair or reinstall the specific application that owns the file. This filename identifies a vendor-built wxWidgets 2.8 AUI runtime, not a general Windows component. Do not download a same-named DLL from an unknown site or rename another DLL. Restore the application’s complete, matching DLL set, then address any remaining Visual C++ runtime or architecture mismatch.
What wxmsw28u_aui_vc_custom.dll is
The name describes a Windows build of the wxWidgets 2.8 graphical toolkit. wxWidgets applications can use the AUI (advanced user interface) library as a separate component, so an application may ship an AUI DLL alongside other wxWidgets files.

That last suffix is important: the filename alone cannot identify the owning application or provide a safe replacement. Two programs can use the same base toolkit but require different compiler settings, exports, architecture, or vendor patches. The file is normally an application runtime component, not a Windows system DLL.
Why Windows reports the file as missing
The immediate cause is that the program cannot load the exact binary it was built to use. The file may have been removed during an incomplete update, quarantined by security software, deleted while cleaning an application folder, or left behind when only part of an application was copied. A damaged installation can produce the same message.

A different failure can look similar. The DLL may exist, but Windows can reject it because it is the wrong bitness, a debug build, a different wxWidgets configuration, or a build linked against an unavailable Visual C++ runtime. In that situation, the message may change from “was not found” to an entry-point, side-by-side, or runtime initialization error after you restore the first file.
There is no reliable published incident rate for this filename-specific error. Treat each case as an application deployment problem and identify the owner before changing files.
Is the DLL safe?
The name itself does not prove that a file is safe or malicious. A legitimate publisher can ship a custom wxWidgets DLL, while an untrusted download can be given the same name. Because custom is part of the vendor build identity, copying a same-named file from another program can make the application unstable even if the copy is clean.

Use the application’s original installer, its official repair function, or the publisher’s own download. Keep your normal antivirus protection enabled and review any quarantine event before restoring a file. Do not disable security controls merely to make the error disappear.
Before you repair anything
Record the complete message, including the application name and any error code. Save a screenshot or copy the text. Note the application version, Windows edition and architecture, and whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit. A 32-bit application normally needs a 32-bit DLL even when it runs on 64-bit Windows; an x64 application needs an x64 DLL.
Find the application that displays the message by checking the title bar, the shortcut’s target, and the folder containing the executable. Do not search the entire disk and choose the first file with a matching name. If several installed programs use wxWidgets, each may require its own custom build.

Before uninstalling, back up documents and, if the program stores settings in its installation directory, copy those settings to a separate location. A repair operation usually preserves them, but a full removal may not.
Manual fix for an installed application
- Close the failing program. End any remaining process in Task Manager so that its files are not locked. Do not delete the DLL from a running application directory.
- Use the publisher’s repair option. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features on older Windows), select the application, choose Advanced options when available, and use Repair. Some desktop installers instead provide Repair from Control Panel > Programs and Features. Follow the application publisher’s instructions if the labels differ.
- If repair is unavailable, reinstall from the original source. Download the installer from the application publisher or use installation media you already trust. Select the same edition and architecture as the existing program. A reinstall should restore the whole wxWidgets DLL set, not just one file.
- Do not mix folders from different releases. Let the installer place every wxWidgets component together. Copying one DLL from an older backup or another application can create a new version or export mismatch.
- Restart Windows. Reboot after repair or reinstall, then launch the application from its normal shortcut. This clears locked modules and ensures that the newly installed files are loaded.
- Check the result exactly. If the program opens, test the feature that previously failed. If Windows names another missing DLL, record that new name rather than repeatedly replacing files; it indicates an incomplete prerequisite set.
If another dependency is reported
A restored wxWidgets DLL can depend on a Visual C++ runtime or another library supplied by the application. Install only the prerequisite documented by that publisher and for the application’s architecture. Installing an arbitrary runtime package may leave the original mismatch unchanged.
wxWidgets documentation emphasizes that every component in a project must use the same C runtime (CRT) configuration. A program assembled from modules built with incompatible CRT settings can fail even when all filenames are present. The same principle applies to compiler toolset, Unicode mode, debug versus release mode, and processor architecture.

- If the message mentions a side-by-side configuration or runtime initialization failure, use the application’s documented Visual C++ runtime package and repair the application again.
- If it reports an entry point, the DLL set is probably from an incompatible wxWidgets build. Restore the publisher’s complete package instead of replacing only the named file.
- If the application is 32-bit, verify that its prerequisites are 32-bit. Installing only x64 prerequisites does not satisfy a 32-bit process.
- If the message names a debug-suffixed module, a release installation cannot substitute for it. Obtain the matching build from the developer or application publisher.
When Windows or security software removed the file
Review your antivirus history or quarantine log for the application path and filename. If the event identifies a threat, follow your security product’s guidance and contact the application publisher; do not restore a quarantined file blindly. If the event was a false positive and the publisher confirms the file, reinstall from the official package rather than downloading a replacement from a DLL archive.
Check whether a cleanup tool, backup restore, or failed update ran immediately before the problem. Restore the application through its installer first. System Restore may be appropriate only when you understand what else it will roll back, and it should not replace a clean, current application installation.

If you compile the application yourself, you must rebuild or deploy a coherent wxWidgets set. Obtain headers, libraries and runtime files from the same wxWidgets source and configuration. The official Windows build guidance requires the appropriate include and library paths, the __WXMSW__ definition, and WXUSINGDLL when building against DLLs.

- Select the intended architecture. Build every component for x86 or every component for x64. Do not place an x86 DLL beside an x64 executable or vice versa.
- Enable the AUI library. The application must link against the AUI component that produces the expected module. A core wxWidgets build without AUI cannot satisfy an AUI import.
- Keep Unicode settings identical. The application, headers, libraries and DLLs must agree on Unicode mode. The
uin the filename is a visible clue that the expected build is Unicode. - Match release and debug modes. A debug DLL, often identified by an additional debug suffix, is not a drop-in replacement for a release DLL. Build the application and all wxWidgets components in the same mode.
- Use one compiler and CRT configuration. The Visual C++ toolset and CRT setting must be consistent across every wxWidgets component and your application. wxWidgets’ FAQ states: “But the most important thing is to use the same CRT setting for all components of your project.”
- Use the matching
setup.h. Configuration options compiled into the headers must correspond to those compiled into the libraries. Mixing setup files from separate builds can produce incompatible symbols or behavior. - Deploy the complete runtime set. Copy the DLLs generated by that build into the application’s deployment directory, preserving the vendor suffix expected by the executable. Do not rename a generic wxWidgets DLL to create that suffix.
- Test on a clean machine. Run the release package without development directories on the DLL search path. This reveals accidental dependencies on files present only on the build computer.
For a third-party application, do not attempt this developer path unless you have its source and build configuration. The publisher’s installer is the only practical way to obtain its exact custom build.
Choosing the right remedy

What not to do
- Do not rename another wxWidgets DLL to
wxmsw28u_aui_vc_custom.dll. The executable may require exports that the renamed file does not contain. - Do not combine wxWidgets 2.8 files with a newer generation or a differently configured build. A current wxWidgets release is not automatically compatible with a 2.8 application.
- Do not copy a DLL from a different application, even if both programs appear to use wxWidgets.
- Do not use a generic DLL fixer or registry cleaner as the primary remedy. This is a file-set and build-compatibility issue, not a missing registry entry.
- Do not download a “universal” replacement and place it in
System32or another Windows directory. Application-specific libraries belong with the application that owns them.
How to give the publisher useful diagnostic information
If repair and a publisher-provided reinstall do not work, send support the exact error text, application and version, Windows version and architecture, whether the application is x86 or x64, and the steps that preceded the failure. Include the installation path and a dependency report showing which module is missing or incompatible, but remove personal documents and license keys from any archive.
Tell support whether the message changed after reinstalling. “File not found,” “entry point not found,” and CRT or side-by-side errors point to different causes. A publisher can then provide the correct custom build or prerequisite instead of asking you to try unrelated DLLs.

Availability and version considerations
wxWidgets 2.8 is an older toolkit generation, and a program built with it may still be supported only by its original publisher. The wxWidgets release page currently lists 3.2.8 archives, including compiler-specific developer packages and end-user ReleaseDLL packages, but those archives are not interchangeable with a vendor’s wxWidgets 2.8 custom build. Toolchain support and archive contents can change, so use the package documented for your application and release.
