WSL error 0x80070057 means Windows rejected a parameter or configuration value. In WSL it can appear while installing a distribution, registering one with WslRegisterDistribution, or launching an already installed distribution, so there is no single repair that fits every case. Identify the failing stage first, then update WSL, verify its Windows features and virtualization support, and check the distribution path or registration archive before retrying.
The procedure below keeps those stages separate. It also shows what information to collect if the error persists, so a report to Microsoft contains enough detail to identify a build-specific or distribution-specific fault.

What WSL error 0x80070057 means
Windows displays 0x80070057 as The parameter is incorrect. In WSL issue records, the same code has appeared in more than one context: the launcher can fail when starting WSL, and distribution registration can fail before a distribution is usable. The code therefore identifies a rejected parameter or configuration path, not one universal defect.

#1 Best Overall
| Failure stage | Typical clue | Checks to prioritize |
|---|---|---|
| Installation | The error appears while enabling or installing WSL or while adding a first distribution. | Windows build, WSL package state, optional features, firmware virtualization, and a restart after feature changes. |
| Registration | WslRegisterDistribution reports 0x80070057 while importing or adding a distribution. |
Full archive path, readable .tar.gz file, destination drive, and whether the distribution name is already registered. |
| Launch | An installed distribution fails when wsl.exe starts it. |
wsl --status, wsl --list --verbose, WSL and kernel versions, and whether every distribution or only one fails. |
If every distribution fails in the same way, investigate WSL components, virtualization, storage, and Windows servicing first. If one distribution fails while another starts, concentrate on that distribution’s package or registration inputs.
Capture the environment before changing it
Record the state that produced the error. This prevents a repair attempt from erasing the evidence needed to distinguish a launcher problem from a bad registration input.
- Open Command Prompt and run
cmd.exe /c ver. Copy the complete Windows version and build string. - Run
wsl --statusand save the output. Note the default WSL version, kernel information, and any component or configuration messages. - Run
wsl --list --verbose. Record each distribution name, whether it is running or stopped, and whether it is using WSL 1 or WSL 2. - Write down the distribution name and version, the exact command or installer action that failed, and the behavior you expected.
- Save the complete error text, including any text printed before or after 0x80070057. If a log file or Windows event entry was produced, keep a copy before attempting a reset.
These fields match the information requested in Microsoft’s WSL troubleshooting guidance. They also let you compare a failing distribution with a working one on the same computer instead of treating the hexadecimal code as a diagnosis.
Update WSL and restart Windows
Run the supported update command before deeper changes:
- Open an elevated Windows Terminal, PowerShell, or Command Prompt.
- Run
wsl --updateand wait for it to finish. If Windows asks for administrator approval, accept it. - Run
wsl --statusagain and record the resulting WSL and kernel details. - Restart Windows, especially if the update changed a component or you later enable an optional feature.
- Retry the same operation that originally failed, rather than changing several variables at once.
WSL can be serviced as a Store package or as the Windows inbox component. Those two servicing paths can have different versions, so note which one is installed when comparing results or preparing an issue report. An update can correct a component mismatch, but it cannot repair a malformed distribution archive or an invalid path supplied to a registration API.
Verify the Windows features WSL 2 needs
Open Turn Windows features on or off from the Windows search box and verify that Windows Subsystem for Linux and Virtual Machine Platform are selected. Apply any change and reboot before testing WSL again. A feature can appear selected while a pending reboot leaves its underlying component unavailable, so do not skip the restart.
When the installer reports a virtualization problem
WSL 2 relies on hardware virtualization. Restart the computer, enter its UEFI or BIOS setup, and enable the virtualization option provided by the processor and firmware. Intel systems commonly label it Intel VT-x; AMD systems commonly label it AMD-V. Firmware menus differ by manufacturer, so use the name shown by your system rather than assuming a particular menu location.
Save the firmware change, boot back into Windows, and confirm that both Windows features remain enabled. Then run wsl --status and retry the original operation. Enabling virtualization without rebooting, or enabling the firmware option but leaving Virtual Machine Platform disabled, can leave the same installation path failing.
Separate a feature problem from a distribution problem
After the reboot, run wsl --list --verbose. If the command itself fails and no distribution list is returned, the WSL component, feature state, or Windows servicing path deserves priority. If the list appears and only one entry fails to start, leave the global feature configuration alone and inspect that distribution’s registration and files.
Check distribution paths and registration inputs
Registration errors often come from the values supplied to WSL rather than from the WSL engine. Microsoft’s troubleshooting documentation notes that distributions may need to be stored on the system drive, normally C:, for some operations. A destination on another drive is therefore an important variable to test, particularly when registration works on one location but not another.
Confirm the archive and destination
For API-level registration, WslRegisterDistribution requires a full path to a Linux filesystem archive in .tar.gz format. Check all of the following before retrying:
- The path is complete, including the drive letter and every directory.
- The archive exists at that exact location and can be opened by the account performing registration.
- The filename really ends in
.tar.gz; a similarly named download or a partially extracted file is not the required archive. - The destination directory is available and has sufficient space for the distribution.
- No removable or disconnected drive is involved. A path that was valid when configured can become invalid after a drive letter changes.
Retype the path instead of relying on a stale shortcut or copied command. A missing character, an inaccessible directory, or an archive that was moved after the command was prepared can all surface as a parameter error.
Rank #4
Check for an existing registration
Run wsl --list --verbose and compare the names with the distribution you are trying to add. If the same name is already registered, a second registration attempt is not a clean test of the archive or path. Decide which existing installation you need to keep before removing or replacing anything; do not delete a registered distribution merely to make the message disappear.
If the distribution is listed but stopped, test launching that existing entry first. If it launches, the WSL engine and feature state are functioning and the failed operation is likely a duplicate registration or an input-path issue. If it is listed but cannot launch, treat the problem as a launch failure and continue with the status, update, and log checks below.
Test the system drive as an isolation step
When registration was attempted on a secondary volume, repeat the test with the archive and destination on the Windows system drive, usually C:, using a short directory path you can verify. This does not prove that every WSL distribution must remain on C:; it isolates storage-location handling from the archive and registration logic. If the system-drive test succeeds, compare permissions, drive availability, and path syntax between the two locations before moving the installation back.

Retry according to the stage that failed
If installation failed
- Use the captured Windows build and
wsl --statusoutput as your baseline. - Run
wsl --update, restart Windows, and verify both optional features. - If the installer mentioned virtualization, enable Intel VT-x, AMD-V, or the equivalent firmware setting, then reboot again.
- Repeat the original installation action and note whether the error occurs before a distribution is created or after a distribution name appears.
- Run
wsl --list --verbose. A newly listed distribution means the failure stage has changed; record that change instead of repeating the same installation blindly.
An installation that fails for every distribution points toward the common WSL components, virtualization, storage, or Windows servicing. An installation that fails only for one distribution points toward that package or its registration inputs.
Best Value
If registration failed
- Confirm the exact distribution name is not already present in
wsl --list --verbose. - Verify the full path to the
.tar.gzarchive and that the file is readable. - Move the test archive and destination to the system drive, usually
C:, to rule out a secondary-drive or permissions issue. - Retry with the same registration method and capture the complete output. Changing the archive, destination, and distribution name simultaneously makes the result difficult to interpret.
- If the same archive registers on another supported path but not the original one, compare drive availability and directory permissions rather than changing WSL versions again.
Do not infer that a successful registration of one archive validates every package. A malformed or incomplete archive can fail while the WSL engine remains healthy.
If launch failed
- Run
wsl --statusandwsl --list --verboseto establish whether WSL can report its configuration and enumerate distributions. - Try the affected distribution by itself, then compare the result with another installed distribution if one is available.
- If every distribution fails, return to the update, optional-feature, virtualization, and reboot sequence.
- If only one distribution fails, inspect its registration state, package version, and storage location. Avoid changing global WSL settings until that comparison is complete.
- Record whether the error appears immediately from
wsl.exeor only after the distribution begins starting. That distinction belongs in any escalation report.
Use a comparison instead of guessing
The following matrix helps isolate the variable that differs between a working and failing case:
| Axis | Working case to record | Failing case to record |
|---|---|---|
| Failure stage | Install, registration, or launch result | The exact stage that produced 0x80070057 |
| Windows build | Output from cmd.exe /c ver |
Output from the same command on the affected attempt |
| WSL package | Whether the Store-serviced or inbox component is present, plus the version shown by WSL status | The corresponding package path and version |
| Distribution | Name, version, and WSL 1 or WSL 2 mode | Name, version, and mode of the failing entry or archive |
| Storage | Drive and complete destination path | Drive, destination path, and whether the drive was available during the attempt |
| Virtualization and features | Windows Subsystem for Linux, Virtual Machine Platform, and firmware virtualization state | Which item was disabled, pending reboot, or reported as unavailable |
| Reproduction after maintenance | Result after wsl --update and reboot |
Whether 0x80070057 remains and whether the failing stage changed |
This comparison is more useful than a generic claim that WSL is broken. It shows whether the error follows a distribution, a path, a build, or the whole WSL installation.

If the error remains after updating, rebooting, verifying features and virtualization, and checking the distribution inputs, gather WSL logs. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance recommends logs for startup failures and errors emitted by wsl.exe. Preserve the logs from a fresh reproduction so their timestamps match the command that produced 0x80070057.
File the issue in the WSL GitHub repository with:
- The Windows build from
cmd.exe /c ver. - The complete
wsl --statusoutput, including kernel information. - The
wsl --list --verboseoutput and the affected distribution’s version. - Whether the WSL package is Store-serviced or the Windows inbox component.
- The exact command or UI action, the full archive and destination path when registration is involved, and the expected and actual behavior.
- Whether the failure affects every distribution or only one, and whether it reproduces after
wsl --updateand a reboot. - The relevant WSL logs and the complete error text.
Historical issue reports show that 0x80070057 has occurred in multiple WSL contexts. A workaround documented for one Windows build or one distribution should therefore be treated as conditional, not as a universal repair for current installations.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes that make the error harder to diagnose
- Skipping the stage check: installation, registration, and launch failures use different inputs, so applying a launch fix to a malformed archive does not address the cause.
- Changing several variables at once: update WSL, move the archive, change the distribution, and alter feature settings one at a time when possible.
- Ignoring a pending reboot: optional-feature and firmware changes are incomplete until Windows has restarted.
- Assuming the code proves malware or hardware failure: 0x80070057 only reports a rejected parameter or configuration path in this context.
- Deleting a distribution without preserving needed data: first establish whether the existing registration is the one you need, then use the supported management process for any replacement.
- Reporting only the hexadecimal code: without the build, WSL and kernel versions, distribution details, reproduction steps, and logs, maintainers cannot reliably determine which context failed.
