The safest way to fix a wpdshserviceobj.dll error is to repair Windows’ component store with DISM, run System File Checker (SFC), restart, and then investigate the connected device if the message appears only with a phone, camera, or other portable device. Do not download a replacement DLL from an unofficial site.
wpdshserviceobj.dll belongs to Microsoft’s Microsoft-Windows-Portable-Devices feature. It normally resides at %windir%System32wpdshserviceobj.dll and works with the Windows Portable Devices (WPD) and Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) stack. The sequence below covers a damaged or missing system file, a WPD/MTP driver problem, and the recovery steps to use when Windows cannot obtain repair files automatically.

What wpdshserviceobj.dll does
A DLL is a library that Windows components load when they need a particular function. The name wpdshserviceobj.dll refers to the Windows Portable Devices shell service-object layer. It is part of the Microsoft-Windows-Portable-Devices feature package rather than a stand-alone application.

On a standard Windows installation, the file is in %windir%System32 (usually C:WindowsSystem32). The same feature package also includes wpdshserviceobj.mof under %windir%System32wbem. A file missing from that location, or a copy that Windows reports as corrupted, should be repaired through Windows servicing instead of replaced with a downloaded copy.

Why the message often appears when a device is connected
WPD and MTP provide the communication layer used by many USB-connected phones, cameras, media players, and similar devices. Connecting one can therefore expose a problem that is not visible during ordinary desktop use. In some cases the DLL itself is intact and the real fault is an incorrect, outdated, or damaged WPD/MTP driver. Microsoft has previously documented a faulty WPD/MTP driver update that stopped some USB phones and media devices from connecting.
Match the symptom to the likely fault
| What you notice | More likely area | Evidence to collect |
|---|---|---|
| An error appears during startup or when several Windows functions use the file | Corrupted or missing protected Windows component | DISM and SFC results; the CBS log if SFC cannot repair files |
| The error appears only after connecting one phone, camera, or media device | WPD/MTP driver, device installation, cable, port, or device-specific configuration | Device Manager warning icon and problem code; SetupAPI installation logs |
| DISM says source files cannot be found | Windows Update cannot provide the component, or the local component store is damaged | DISM output and the matching installation source available to you |
This distinction determines what to do next: repair Windows first when the problem is system-wide; inspect the device and its driver when the trigger is limited to one portable device.
Prepare before changing Windows components
- Back up important work. Servicing normally preserves personal files, but a backup protects you if a later recovery operation becomes necessary.
- Close photo-import tools, media players, phone-management software, and any other program that may be using the affected device.
- Disconnect the phone, camera, or other portable device while repairing Windows. Reconnect it only after the restart requested below.
- Use an account that can approve administrator actions. DISM and SFC must run from an elevated Command Prompt.
Repair the Windows file with DISM and SFC
Run DISM before SFC. DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as its source for clean protected files. Starting with SFC can leave it unable to replace a damaged copy if the component store is also corrupted.
1. Open an elevated Command Prompt
- Open the Start menu and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt. The title bar should indicate an administrator Command Prompt.
2. Run DISM RestoreHealth
At the administrator prompt, enter this command exactly and press Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
/Online tells DISM to service the Windows installation that is currently running. /Cleanup-image selects component-store servicing, and /Restorehealth scans for corruption and repairs it. DISM normally obtains replacement components through Windows Update. The progress percentage can pause for a while; leave the window open until DISM reports a completion result.
3. Run System File Checker
When DISM has finished, run:
sfc /scannow
SFC checks protected Windows files, including files in the Portable Devices feature, and replaces corrupted copies with versions from the repaired component store. Do not close the Command Prompt before verification reaches 100 percent. The final message tells you whether SFC found no integrity violations, repaired files, or found files it could not repair.
4. Restart and test
Restart Windows even if the commands report success. After signing in, connect the phone, camera, or other device again and repeat the action that produced the error. Use a direct USB port and a known-good data cable when possible; a charge-only cable or unstable hub can create a separate connection failure that looks like a Windows device problem.
When the problem is limited to one portable device
If Windows functions normally until a particular phone or camera is attached, continue with device diagnostics after the DISM/SFC sequence.
Check Device Manager and the problem code
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand categories such as Portable Devices, Universal Serial Bus controllers, or any category containing the affected hardware.
- Look for a yellow warning icon. Right-click the device, choose Properties, and read the message and problem code on the General tab.
- Record the exact code before changing anything. The code identifies whether Windows failed to start the device, install its driver, or communicate with it.
Microsoft recommends using Device Manager problem-code checks when diagnosing driver-installation failures. A code attached to the device, rather than a system-wide DLL error, points toward the driver and installation path.
Install applicable Windows updates
Open Settings, choose Windows Update (or Update & Security > Windows Update on older Windows editions), select Check for updates, and install applicable updates. Restart when Windows requests it, then test the device again. Windows Update has previously delivered a correction for an incorrect WPD/MTP driver, so an update can resolve a device-only failure without manually downloading a DLL.

Review installation evidence
For a device that still fails, preserve the Device Manager code and inspect the SetupAPI installation logs. These logs record driver-installation decisions and failures and can show whether Windows rejected a package, could not find a matching driver, or encountered a device-specific error. Keep the time of the failed connection and the hardware name with the log details so support personnel can correlate the entries.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf DISM cannot repair the component store
A common DISM failure says that source files could not be found. This means the normal Windows Update source was unavailable or did not contain a usable matching component. You can provide a source from matching Windows installation media, a network share, a USB drive, or a DVD.
Use a matching repair source
Attach or mount the installation source that matches the installed Windows edition, language, architecture, and servicing level as closely as possible. Identify the path containing the Windows image, then run DISM with that path:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth /Source:<path> /LimitAccess
Replace <path> with the actual source path, such as a mounted installation drive or approved network share. The angle-bracket notation is a placeholder for your path; do not type the brackets unless they are part of the real path. /LimitAccess tells DISM not to contact Windows Update and to use the supplied source. If the source does not match the installed Windows image, DISM may still report that required files are unavailable, so obtain media for the same edition and architecture rather than guessing.
Read the servicing log
DISM records servicing problems in %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log. Open the log after DISM finishes and save the relevant entries, along with the complete command output. The log is useful when a support technician needs to identify a missing package or a source mismatch; avoid deleting it before you have copied the details.

Understand the SFC result
“Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations”
SFC did not find corrupted protected files. If the portable device still fails, focus on Device Manager, Windows Update, the USB connection, and SetupAPI evidence rather than repeatedly replacing the DLL.
“Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them”
Restart if you have not already done so and test the original action. The repaired component may not be loaded until the next boot.
“Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them”
Save the CBS log details and the SFC output. Run DISM again with a known-good matching source if Windows Update was unavailable, then run sfc /scannow once more. If protected files remain unrepaired, move to an in-place repair installation or Windows recovery rather than copying individual DLLs from another computer.
What not to do
- Do not download
wpdshserviceobj.dllfrom an unknown DLL site. A file with the right name can be the wrong build, altered, or incompatible with your Windows installation. It also bypasses the component servicing records that keep Windows files consistent. - Do not use an unverified registry cleaner. Registry changes cannot substitute for DISM and SFC, and an incorrect cleanup can create additional startup or device problems.
- Do not assume every message naming the DLL proves the DLL is the cause. A WPD/MTP driver, device-installation failure, or damaged component store can surface the same file name.
- Do not interrupt DISM or SFC. Closing the elevated window before completion leaves the repair attempt incomplete and removes useful diagnostic output.
When to use Windows recovery or a repair installation
If DISM cannot restore the component store even with a matching source, and SFC continues to report unrepaired protected files, Windows recovery may be required. An in-place repair installation from matching Windows media can replace damaged system components while preserving personal files and installed applications when the edition and installation choices permit it. Back up important data first, follow the media’s compatibility requirements, and keep the CBS log, DISM output, SFC result, Device Manager code, and SetupAPI details available.

A device-only problem that survives a healthy DISM/SFC result should be escalated with the exact hardware model, problem code, cable and port observations, Windows edition, and the time-stamped logs.
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- Run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthfrom an administrator Command Prompt. - After DISM completes, run
sfc /scannowand wait for 100 percent verification. - Restart Windows and reconnect the portable device.
- If the error affects only that device, record the Device Manager warning and problem code.
- Install applicable Windows updates and test again.
- If DISM cannot find source files, repeat it with
/Source:<path> /LimitAccessusing matching installation media. - Save
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.logand SetupAPI evidence when repair remains unsuccessful. - Use an in-place repair installation, Windows recovery, or Microsoft support when protected files remain damaged.
