This guide follows Blizzard’s technical-support guidance and keeps network, game-data, and hardware troubleshooting in separate branches. It does not promise that one adjustment will cure every case.

Begin with a five-minute triage
- Check for an official incident. Look in the Battle.net application, in-game notices, Blizzard’s Breaking News area, and the official technical-support guide. A widespread service problem cannot be repaired by changing your graphics settings or replacing local hardware.
- Describe what fails. Is the image visibly choppy, are actions delayed, or does WoW lose its connection? Record the time and the exact error text if there is one.
- Reduce variables. Close or pause downloads, streams, cloud synchronization, and other high-bandwidth activity. Change one thing, reproduce the problem, and record the result before trying another change.
Blizzard’s July 19, 2024 support post puts the distinction plainly: “Connection speed tests measure bandwidth, which is different from latency.” A fast speed-test result therefore does not prove that the route to a particular WoW service is responsive.

These are practical classifications, not diagnoses. A busy system can stutter while a bad route can delay actions at the same time, so keep both observations when they overlap.

Check Blizzard’s service status before changing your PC
Open the Battle.net application and look for notices, check in-game announcements, and review Blizzard’s Breaking News and support channels. The locations are listed in Blizzard’s Common Technical Issues and Solutions guide. The notices tell you whether other players may be affected; they are not a measurement of your individual connection.
If an incident is posted, save your observations and wait for the service information to change before making invasive local changes. If no notice explains the behavior, continue with the symptom-specific tests below. The absence of a notice does not prove that your computer or ISP is at fault; it simply makes a local comparison worthwhile.
When the problem is high latency or delayed actions
Test wired Ethernet against Wi-Fi
If you are on Wi-Fi, connect the computer directly to the router or modem with Ethernet for a temporary comparison. Blizzard summarizes its general advice as: “WiFi is less stable than a wired connection directly to your router or modem.” Treat this as a diagnostic test, not a claim that every wireless network is unsuitable.
- Leave your WoW settings unchanged.
- Connect by Ethernet, keeping the same character and activity if possible.
- Play or observe long enough to reproduce the symptom, then compare the Home and World readings and the frequency of delays or disconnects.
- Reconnect to Wi-Fi and repeat under similar conditions if you need to confirm the difference.
If Ethernet improves the result, inspect wireless interference, distance, walls or other barriers, the router and wireless adapter, and the computer’s power behavior. A damaged adapter or unstable power state can imitate a route problem. Do not buy a premium router or a particular cable category merely because a game is lagging; first establish that the existing wireless link changes the outcome. If you need to run the comparison, any suitable Ethernet cable that reaches the router is enough for the test.
Stop competing traffic during the test
Pause large downloads, video streams, game updates, backups, and other devices or applications that are consuming substantial bandwidth. Blizzard explains that a live-service game must exchange timely data, whereas streaming and downloads can buffer; another application’s traffic can therefore worsen game connection issues. Its wording is direct: “Keep in mind that anything that takes up bandwidth can cause game connection issues or make them worse.”

Run the same in-game activity with competing traffic stopped and then, if safe, with it restored. This comparison tells you whether congestion is involved; it does not identify which application or household device needs permanent limits.
Do not confuse a speed test with a WoW latency test
A speed test normally reports available bandwidth to the test provider. WoW latency depends on the path and server handling your game session, so a high download or upload result can coexist with delayed actions. Record the in-game Home and World readings, the time, your connection type, and whether other internet services were busy. Use the speed test only as an additional observation, not as proof that the game route is healthy.

Blizzard describes Home and World as connections to different servers carrying different traffic. The Home server hosts your character realm and carries a comparatively slim set of traffic. The World server represents the active play area and handles more in-world activity. A group or instance hosted farther from your normal region can therefore show a different World result.

Blizzard notes that corrupted add-on or temporary character data, a corrupted network cache, or a driver setting can contribute to some World-latency problems. A high World number is evidence of delay, not proof of any one of those causes.
WoW-specific checks when no service incident is posted
Reset the user interface as a controlled test
For a problem that appears specific to WoW, Blizzard’s support guidance lists resetting the UI as one possible check. Use the current instructions in the technical-support guide rather than deleting files at random. Before doing so, note your add-ons and custom settings so you know what changed and can restore them deliberately.

After the reset, reproduce the same character, zone, and activity. If the symptom disappears, reintroduce customizations in small groups until the behavior returns. If nothing changes, restore only what you need and move to the network or hardware branch; repeating the reset will not fix a route that is failing upstream.

Update the network driver when the evidence points to the PC
Blizzard identifies a network-driver update as a relevant check for some connection problems. Use the driver supplied for your computer or network adapter by its manufacturer and record the version and installation date. Test WoW again after the update, without changing several unrelated settings at the same time.
Power-cycle the connection
For intermittent connection trouble, Blizzard also points to power-cycling the network connection as a possible step. Shut down the relevant network equipment using its normal procedure, allow it to complete its restart, and then test again. If the internet is unavailable to every device afterward, the problem is broader than WoW and should be handled as a home-network or ISP outage.
When the symptom is a disconnect
Write down whether the whole internet dropped or only WoW, the exact error wording, and whether the event affects one character, one activity, or every login. Also record whether it happens at a consistent time, after entering a particular zone, or during a group activity. A prolonged interruption can end in a full disconnect, so the time line matters.
- Check service notices.
- Stop competing bandwidth use and repeat the activity.
- If on Wi-Fi, compare with direct Ethernet.
- Check Home and World readings immediately before the failure, if the client remains connected long enough to display them.
- For a WoW-only pattern, perform the UI-reset check and, where appropriate, update the network driver or power-cycle the connection.
Do not infer from a single disconnect that your account, router, or ISP is permanently defective. Intermittent events need repeated observations under comparable conditions.

When the symptom is low FPS or visual stutter
Keep this branch separate from latency troubleshooting. Low FPS means the computer is not presenting frames smoothly; delayed actions can occur even when the frame rate looks normal. Changing network equipment will not repair a graphics or thermal bottleneck.
Check for heat and hardware symptoms
Blizzard’s Checking for Overheating Components support result identifies overheating as a possible cause of lockups, crashes, low FPS, and stuttering. Watch for crashes under load, sudden shutdowns, unusual fan behavior, or a case that is accumulating heat. Persistent thermal symptoms or repeated crashes warrant qualified hardware diagnosis rather than guesswork.
No universal temperature threshold is established in the cited guidance, and hardware sensors vary by component and system design. Do not treat an invented number as a safe limit.
Use Blizzard’s current performance instructions
Blizzard links a dedicated “WoW Performance (FPS) Issues” resource from its technical-support overview. Consult that current article for the supported performance procedure and the graphics options available to your edition and hardware. Exact labels, effects, and minimum requirements can change; they are not established by the support material cited here.

A stutter that occurs only in one area is a different lead from a frame-rate problem that appears on the character-selection screen or across every game.

Use scope and timing to narrow the cause

How to report the problem so support can use it
When you ask Blizzard or a qualified technician for help, provide the server, video card, your location in the world for connection issues, and your ISP. Those are the details Blizzard requests in its forum guidance. Add the observations that make your case reproducible:
- Whether the symptom is low FPS, visual stutter, delayed actions, or a disconnect.
- Home and World readings, including which one is elevated.
- Character, realm, zone or instance, and the exact time of each event.
- Whether the whole internet connection failed.
- Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and what changed during the direct-wired comparison.
- Whether competing downloads or streams were paused.
- Any error text, crash, lockup, unusual heat, or recent driver or UI change.
Include the steps you already tested and the result of each one. “Ethernet made no difference” is useful evidence; it prevents support from sending you through the same test again.
A low-risk order of operations
Use this sequence when you are unsure where to start:
- Check Blizzard notices in Battle.net, in-game, and the official support channels.
- Classify the symptom as visual performance, delayed response, or disconnect.
- Record Home and World readings, scope, timing, and error text.
- For connection symptoms, pause other bandwidth use and test direct Ethernet if you are on Wi-Fi.
- If the issue is WoW-specific, follow Blizzard’s current UI-reset guidance; consider a network-driver update or connection power cycle when appropriate.
- For low FPS or stutter, follow Blizzard’s current performance article and investigate heat, crashes, and hardware symptoms separately.
- Retest after each single change, then escalate with the complete log if the problem persists.
This order favors reversible tests with high diagnostic value. It avoids buying hardware or applying unverified temperature and graphics-setting rules before the evidence shows that they are relevant.
