If World of Warcraft looks corrupted, the interface moved, icons vanished, or the game started crashing after an update, begin by identifying the symptom. A moved layout calls for Edit Mode; broken interface data calls for a clean UI-folder test; rendering faults call for a GPU and driver check. DirectX 11 and Scan and Repair are useful experiments for some texture reports, but they are community suggestions rather than universal fixes.
Identify what actually broke before changing settings
An update can coincide with several different problems, and the remedy depends on which layer failed. Do not assume every post-update fault has the same cause. First write down what you see and when it happens.

- Layout change: frames, action bars, or menus are in a different position but render normally.
- Interface data failure: panels, icons, fonts, or addon elements are missing, duplicated, or reset.
- Rendering corruption: textures, character models, terrain, or icons flicker, turn black, become stretched, or show visual artifacts.
- Performance problem: frame rate drops or stutters even though the picture is otherwise intact.
- Crash or lock-up: WoW closes, freezes, or displays an error during launch or play.
- Launcher or file problem: Battle.net reports damaged files, an update will not complete, or the game cannot start.
Also note whether the fault affects every character, one character, one interface panel, or only particular zones. Record whether addons were enabled. Those details determine which test is informative and make a later support report much easier to evaluate.

Try to reproduce the symptom in a controlled way. If one character is affected but another on the same account is normal, write that down. If every character shows the same black texture, the problem is less likely to be a single character’s saved layout. If only one panel or addon is wrong, avoid changing graphics settings until you have tested that interface component. Likewise, a fault that appears only in one zone is different from corruption visible on the login screen or throughout the client.

Take a screenshot when practical and copy any exact error text. Note whether the problem began immediately after launching the updated client or only after an addon manager synchronized files. This record is not a diagnosis by itself, but it prevents later tests from changing the description of the original failure.
Choose the least disruptive test first

Start with the branch that matches what you can observe. A layout adjustment is reversible and does not disturb local files. A folder reset is more disruptive but gives a much cleaner answer about addons and saved configuration. GPU checks and API changes belong later when the visible failure is genuinely graphical.
Reset WoW’s local UI state safely
Blizzard Support instructions reproduced in a Blizzard forum thread state: “Resetting your UI to default settings can resolve various display and interface issues.” The documented method is a folder reset, not merely disabling an addon or typing /reload. It removes local interface, cache, and configuration data from the active game folder while leaving renamed backups available.

Prepare a clean test
- Exit World of Warcraft completely. Confirm that the game is no longer running before changing its folders.
- Temporarily stop any addon-manager software from synchronizing the game directory. An active manager can restore the same files before you finish testing.
- In Battle.net, open World of Warcraft’s game options and choose the command that opens the installation location.
- Enter the folder belonging to the affected WoW version. Work only in that version’s folder so you do not reset a different installation.
If you have multiple WoW branches installed, check the folder name carefully. The reset only tells you something useful when it is applied to the version that actually shows the fault. Close unrelated tools that might rewrite the directory while you test.
Rename the three folders
- Rename
Cacheto a backup name such asCacheOld. - Rename
InterfacetoInterfaceOld. - Rename
WTFtoWTFOld. - Leave the renamed folders in place. They preserve your previous local data while the game creates clean folders on the next launch.
Relaunch WoW and reproduce the original problem before reinstalling addons or copying files back. A clean interface test is most useful when it remains clean long enough to determine whether the symptom has disappeared. Check the same character, zone, and panel you used in the first test rather than relying on a different scene.
What this reset changes
The reset removes the active copies of cached data, addon files, and local configuration from WoW’s view. Expect interface positions, addon settings, and other local preferences to be absent during the test. It does not prove that the update itself was defective; it shows whether the old local state was contributing to the failure.

Do not let an addon manager resynchronize the folders during this step. If the problem returns immediately after synchronization, the addon or its saved configuration becomes a stronger suspect. Keep the backup folders until you know which settings you need. To restore data, close the game first and bring back only the backup material you need, testing between changes rather than restoring all three folders at once.

Do not delete the backup folders simply because the clean launch worked; they may contain layouts or settings you still want to recover.
Why disabling addons alone is a different test
Disabling addons or running /reload leaves the existing cache and saved-variable data in place. The Blizzard Support procedure specifically renames Cache, Interface, and WTF, so a full folder reset tests more than an in-game reload. Use the lighter tests when you want a quick check; use the documented rename procedure when the interface remains corrupted or configuration files may be damaged.
Interpret the clean-UI result
If the problem disappears with the three folders renamed, local state was involved, but that result does not identify which folder or addon caused it. Restore items gradually and keep notes. If the problem remains in a completely clean state, stop repeatedly reinstalling addons; move to the graphics, file, or escalation branches instead.
A clean launch can also make the interface look unfamiliar because saved positions and preferences are absent. That visual difference is expected and is not evidence that the reset failed. The question is whether the original corruption, missing elements, or crash can still be reproduced.
Check the graphics adapter and driver for rendering faults
If the complaint is visual corruption rather than misplaced controls, verify that WoW is using the intended graphics card. Systems with integrated and discrete adapters can select the wrong device after hardware or software changes. Open WoW’s graphics settings, identify the selected adapter, and confirm that it is the card you expect to use.

Next, consult the graphics-card manufacturer’s current driver guidance for your model and operating system. The Blizzard forum reply that recommends this check addressed a specific hardware-changed settings issue and is older and issue-specific. Treat selecting the correct adapter and checking the driver as diagnostic steps, not as a promise that the newest driver will solve every post-update problem.
Make the GPU check meaningful
- Write down the adapter currently shown before changing it.
- If more than one adapter is available, select the intended one and restart WoW before judging the result.
- Record the driver state and the date of any change so you can correlate the change with the symptom.
- If the game keeps reverting to an unintended adapter, report that behavior separately; it is different from a texture file being damaged.
Do not buy a new graphics card, monitor, or “repair” utility as a first response. The applicable troubleshooting steps concern software selection, drivers, local folders, and game files; a purchase is not established as necessary for these symptoms.
Use DirectX 11 and Scan and Repair as targeted experiments
A Blizzard community bug report about textures and icons that were “bugging out” includes suggestions to test DirectX 11, verify GPU selection, and run Scan and Repair. Those suggestions belong to that forum discussion; they are not established universal remedies for every graphics problem.

Test the DirectX 11 setting
- Open WoW’s graphics or advanced graphics settings and note the current graphics API.
- Change the API to DirectX 11, if that option is available on your installation.
- Record the original value before applying the change so you can return to it.
- Restart the game and revisit the location or interface that exposed the corruption.
If the symptom is unchanged, restore the original API or continue with the next diagnostic step. A change in behavior can indicate an API-specific interaction, but it does not identify the underlying file, driver, or hardware cause by itself. Make only one major change at a time when possible; otherwise a successful result cannot be attributed to the API.
Run Battle.net’s Scan and Repair
- Close WoW and open the Battle.net client.
- Choose World of Warcraft, open its game options, and select Scan and Repair.
- Allow the scan to finish before launching the game again.
- Test the same character, zone, or interface panel that showed the fault.
Scan and Repair is most informative when you keep the test conditions consistent. If you changed the graphics API at the same time, you cannot tell which change affected the result; run one experiment at a time when possible. A completed scan is not proof that every possible cause has been ruled out, especially when the symptom survives a clean UI state and verified files.
Use Edit Mode when the interface merely moved
The updated WoW interface includes layout customization through Edit Mode, accessible from the Game Menu. If action bars, frames, or other controls are simply in an unexpected position, open the Game Menu, choose Edit Mode, and inspect the active layout. Move or resize the affected elements there and save the layout when it looks correct.

Edit Mode addresses placement and layout. It does not repair corrupted textures, replace a faulty graphics driver, restore damaged game files, or prevent a crash. If the same element is invisible, flickers, or displays broken artwork rather than merely being misplaced, use the graphics or clean-UI branches instead.
When the launcher or files appear to be the problem
If Battle.net reports an update or file error, or the game fails before you can reach its settings, start with the client’s own game-options tools. Scan and Repair is the relevant file-integrity experiment described in the community report. Do not delete the installation or the renamed UI backups while you are still isolating the cause; those actions destroy useful comparison points.
After a repair, reproduce the original launch or visual problem. If the launcher completes normally but the interface is still broken, return to the clean UI-folder test rather than repeating the same file scan without new evidence. If the client cannot complete the update, preserve the exact message and the point at which it stops for your support report.

Include these facts
- Graphics-card model and operating system.
- WoW version or game branch affected.
- Exact error text, if any.
- A plain description of what is wrong: for example, black textures, missing icons, flickering models, moved frames, stutter, or a crash.
- When it happens: at launch, on one character, in one zone, when opening a panel, or after a particular action.
- Whether addons were enabled, disabled, or removed for the clean test.
- Which adapter WoW selected and whether you changed the graphics API.
- What happened after each test: UI-folder reset, driver check, DirectX 11 test, and Scan and Repair.
Phrase the report around a repeatable sequence rather than saying only that the game is broken. “Textures turn black when I enter one zone after a clean UI launch; the intended GPU is selected; Scan and Repair completed” gives a helper a usable starting point.
Common mistakes that obscure the cause
- Changing several settings at once: If you reset folders, change the API, and update a driver together, a successful result cannot be attributed to one cause. Separate tests when practical.
- Letting the addon manager restore files: A sync can undo the clean-state test before you observe it.
- Deleting backups immediately: The renamed folders are your recovery path for local settings you still need.
- Treating Edit Mode as a graphics repair: Layout controls cannot correct a broken texture pipeline or driver selection.
- Assuming the newest driver is automatically best: Use the manufacturer’s current guidance and record what changed.
- Calling every post-update problem an update bug: Timing alone does not distinguish damaged local data, adapter selection, API behavior, or a game-file problem.
- Testing a different scenario: A clean result in a quiet zone does not settle a symptom that only appears in a specific raid, character, or panel. Reproduce the original conditions.
- Restoring everything at once: Copying all three backup folders back can immediately reintroduce the same fault and erase the value of the isolation test.
A practical recovery order
- Describe the symptom and its scope.
- If controls only moved, check Edit Mode.
- If interface data looks wrong, stop addon synchronization and perform the Cache, Interface, and WTF rename test.
- If rendering is corrupted, verify the selected GPU and check the manufacturer’s driver guidance.
- For a textures-and-icons symptom like the community report, test DirectX 11 and run Scan and Repair, documenting the original settings.
- If the issue persists, submit the hardware, version, addon state, exact symptom, and results of every test to a support or community channel.
This order starts with reversible, symptom-matched changes and preserves the information needed for escalation. It also keeps a layout adjustment separate from a local UI reset and from graphics-rendering diagnostics, so each result tells you something useful.
