Then capture the exact error code and the point at which it appears. Repair files, verify requirements and drivers for crashes; reduce software and graphics load for low FPS; and isolate addons, Wi-Fi, and local network equipment for lag or disconnects. Those paths overlap occasionally, but applying the wrong one wastes time.
First, classify the problem
World of Warcraft: Classic covers several game versions and modes, and the correct system requirements can differ between them. On the Battle.net launcher, note the exact Classic version selected before changing settings. Record whether the problem occurs at launch, login, loading into a realm, or during play.

Write down the details before changing anything
- Copy the complete message, including capitalization and the error number.
- Note the selected Classic version or mode.
- Record whether the failure is a crash to desktop, a total freeze, a frame-rate drop, a timeout, rubber-banding, or a realm-list disconnect.
- Write down when it began and whether it followed a game, operating-system, driver, or addon update.
- Check whether another device on the same internet connection has similar trouble.
This record prevents a network symptom from being treated as a graphics fault and gives support a reproducible starting point.
Search the exact error code first
Blizzard advises searching a specific error message or code because a separate article may contain a more targeted fix. Do that before deleting files or reinstalling the game. Use the entire code, not only a fragment such as “disconnected.”

What BLZ51901016 indicates
Blizzard lists BLZ51901016 with two broad possibilities: the computer may not meet the requirements for the selected game, or there may be a connection problem. The code can appear with a disconnect and can leave the client stuck at Retrieving the realm list. It is not, by itself, proof that the game files, Wi-Fi, or Blizzard’s servers are at fault.
For this code, work through the requirements, driver and operating-system updates, user-interface reset, network-device reset, wireless optimization, and application-closing steps below. If other players report the same failure, check current Blizzard service notices before treating your own installation as the cause.
Fix crashes, freezes, and lockups
1. Verify requirements for the exact Classic version
Open the official requirements for the version shown in the launcher and compare them with the computer’s processor, memory, graphics hardware, operating-system version, and available storage. A machine below minimum requirements can be unstable, not merely slower. Do not use requirements for one Classic mode as a substitute for another.

If the computer only barely meets the minimum, close every nonessential program and use conservative graphics settings while testing. Meeting the minimum does not guarantee a stable experience under every resolution, background workload, or addon combination.
2. Repair the installation
- Open the Battle.net desktop app and select World of Warcraft Classic.
- Open the gear icon beside the Play button.
- Choose Scan and Repair, then select Begin Scan.
- Wait for the scan and any replacement downloads to finish before launching the game again.
The repair process addresses damaged or incomplete game files. It does not correct an underpowered computer, a bad graphics driver, or a failing network.

3. Update drivers and the operating system
Install current graphics drivers from the graphics-hardware manufacturer and apply pending operating-system updates. Driver compatibility is especially worth checking when a crash starts immediately after a major game update or a driver change. Restart the computer after updates so that a pending installation is not mistaken for a game fault.
4. Remove software conflicts
Exit browsers, recording tools, overlays, hardware-monitoring utilities, chat clients, and other applications temporarily. This both frees memory and processor time and tests for an interaction between the game and another program. If the crash disappears, reopen programs one at a time to find the conflict instead of leaving every application disabled permanently.
5. Reinstall only after the earlier checks
A clean reinstall is a last resort after requirements, repair, updates, and application conflicts have been addressed. Reinstalling can replace damaged content, but it will not fix a system-wide driver problem, an unstable overclock, or a service outage. Allow the launcher to complete all updates before judging the result.
When the whole computer shuts down
If the computer powers off, restarts, displays a blue screen, or becomes unstable outside the game, treat that as a broader computer problem. Use the operating system’s blue-screen, power, temperature, and hardware diagnostics rather than assuming Classic alone caused it. A game reinstall is not a remedy for a system-level shutdown.
Fix low FPS and graphics stutter
Check headroom, not just the minimum
Blizzard notes that a computer closer to the minimum requirements can deliver worse performance. Confirm that the selected resolution and graphics options are realistic for the hardware. Close other programs, including browsers with many open tabs, and test again so that competing resource use is not confused with a graphics limitation.

Update the graphics driver after major patches
Check for a current graphics driver, particularly if the frame rate changed after a substantial game update. Restart after installing it. If the driver is current and performance is still poor, continue with the in-game tests instead of repeatedly reinstalling the game.
Test Vertical Sync and restore defaults
- Launch the affected Classic version and open the in-game system or graphics settings.
- Toggle Vertical Sync off and test the same location or activity.
- If there is no improvement, or if tearing and other problems appear, turn Vertical Sync back on.
- Use the option to restore default graphics settings if custom changes make the result difficult to interpret.
Use the same character, area, and approximate camera view for each comparison. That makes a settings change meaningful instead of comparing two scenes with different workloads.
Separate FPS problems from latency
Low FPS makes the picture update slowly on your computer. Latency makes actions or other players arrive late even when the frame rate is normal. Watch the frame-rate and latency indicators separately, and use the connection procedure below if the image is smooth but movement rubber-bands or abilities register late.
Fix lag, rubber-banding, and disconnects
Restart the simple components first
- Exit Classic and restart the computer.
- Close applications that upload or download data, including cloud-sync tools, large downloads, video streams, and other game launchers.
- Try the game again before changing several network settings at once.
This test removes temporary software load and stale client or network states without changing the installation.
Update and isolate addons
Addons can contribute to lag and disconnections. Update all addons, then disable every addon and test an affected character or location. If the problem disappears, enable addons one at a time or in small groups until the symptom returns; the last group contains the likely trigger. If disabling addons changes nothing, leave them disabled while you continue the network diagnosis so that two variables are not changing together.

Reset the user interface when addon testing is inconclusive
Use Blizzard’s user-interface reset procedure if the issue persists with addons disabled or if the interface behaves abnormally. Close the game and the Battle.net app first. The usual reset renames the Classic installation’s Cache, Interface, and WTF folders so they can be restored if needed, then lets the client create clean folders on the next launch. Keep the renamed folders until testing is complete; they may contain addon data or saved settings you want to recover.
Power-cycle the modem or router
- Unplug the modem, and the router as well if it is a separate device.
- Leave the equipment disconnected for about 30 seconds.
- Reconnect the modem first, then the router if applicable.
- Wait about one minute for the internet service and local network to return.
- Restart the computer and test Classic.
A power cycle clears a temporary device state. It cannot repair an ISP fault, a damaged cable, a distant routing problem, or a Blizzard service incident.
Test over a direct wired connection
Connect the computer directly to the modem or router with an Ethernet cable and repeat the same in-game test. Blizzard states that “Wireless (Wi-Fi) connections can have difficulties with online gaming.” A wired comparison helps determine whether wireless interference, distance, congestion, or router placement is involved; it is a diagnostic step, not a guaranteed cure.

Tell a local fault from a service or ISP problem
Use scope and timing as evidence
A problem limited to one computer points toward that installation, its drivers, addons, or local software. A problem affecting every device on one home connection points toward the modem, router, ISP, or local line. Reports from players on different networks suggest a broader service issue. None of these observations proves the cause, but they determine where the next useful check belongs.

Do not infer an outage from one disconnect
The available troubleshooting guidance does not establish that a particular live outage is occurring. Check Blizzard’s current service notices when the symptom is widespread, when the realm list cannot be retrieved by multiple players, or when both wired and wireless tests fail. Avoid repeatedly resetting a working PC while a service incident is being investigated.
Contact the right support channel
Contact the ISP when the connection itself is unreliable
Give the ISP the times of failure, whether other devices were affected, and whether a direct wired test changed the result. Ask them to investigate online-gaming connectivity, not simply to confirm that a web page loads. Include any modem or router status information they request.
Contact Blizzard support with a reproducible report
Provide the exact error code, Classic version, point of failure, operating-system and driver update history, addon state, wired-versus-Wi-Fi result, and the steps already completed. Say whether the game crashes, freezes, loses frames, rubber-bands, disconnects, or remains stuck retrieving the realm list. This prevents support from repeating generic steps that you have already tested.

- The selected Classic version and its requirements were checked.
- Battle.net Scan and Repair completed without leaving pending downloads.
- Graphics and operating-system updates were installed and the computer restarted.
- Other applications were closed during a controlled retest.
- All addons were updated, then disabled; the user interface was reset if needed.
- The modem/router was power-cycled and the computer restarted.
- A direct Ethernet comparison was performed where possible.
- You checked whether other devices or players show the same symptom.
- The complete error message and the timing of each test were recorded.
What not to do
- Do not treat low FPS as latency without checking both indicators.
- Do not assume BLZ51901016 identifies one specific cause; Blizzard lists both requirements and connection conditions for it.
- Do not buy networking equipment expecting it to fix a crash, damaged files, or a server-side incident.
- Do not reinstall before repairing files and testing drivers, applications, addons, and the connection path.
- Do not re-enable every addon at once after a clean test; that removes the evidence about which change mattered.
Following the symptom-specific path gives you a controlled diagnosis: client stability is tested with requirements, repair, drivers, and software isolation; graphics performance with load and settings tests; and online play with addon, device, wired, ISP, and service-scope checks.
