How to Fix Word 365 Crashes When a Third-Party App Fills a Template

If Word for Microsoft 365 closes while a document or case-management application is generating and populating a template, you may be seeing a Microsoft-confirmed issue tied to Version 2608 (Build 20326.x). Microsoft’s issue notice, updated September 14, 2026, says the Word team has mitigated the problem and marks it fixed. It does not name a fixed build or tell users to install a particular patch manually.

Start by matching your version and workflow to that description, then run Office Update. If the crash continues, test Word in Safe Mode and disable Word or COM add-ins one at a time. Those are general diagnostics, not a Microsoft-confirmed workaround for this particular incident. Do not assume every third-party application is affected, and do not confuse this case with a separate .dot/.dotm mail-merge crash that Microsoft still listed as under investigation in September 2026.

What Microsoft has confirmed

The documented symptom is specific: Word for Microsoft 365 closes unexpectedly after a certain third-party document or case-management application generates a document and populates it from a template. Microsoft’s notice associates the incident with Word Version 2608, Build 20326.x. The notice does not identify the affected applications by name, state that every application in those categories is affected, or publish a fixed build number.

Microsoft last updated the notice on September 14, 2026 and marked the issue FIXED. Its status statement says, “The Word Team has mitigated the issue.” That means Microsoft has addressed the service or product condition on its side, but the public notice does not explain how the mitigation is delivered. There is no documented button, installer, registry change, or template replacement that users must perform to obtain it.

Microsoft’s September 2026 Word for Windows issue index also lists this third-party template-population crash as fixed. Treat that status as the first answer to the incident: check that your case matches, bring Office up to date, and only then move into general crash diagnostics if Word still closes.

A mitigation status does not guarantee that every installation will behave identically immediately. Office update channels, organizational controls, cached components, and the external integration can affect what you observe. Record the exact build before and after updating instead of assuming that a successful update has installed a particular fix. If the third-party program is centrally managed, your IT team may need to verify its integration component as well.

Check whether your crash matches the incident

Before changing templates or deleting add-ins, capture the facts below. A similar-looking crash can have a different cause, especially if Word fails while opening by itself, during ordinary editing, or during mail merge.

Word edition Word for Microsoft 365 The Microsoft notice applies to this product family, not to every perpetual or non-Windows edition of Word.
Build Version 2608, Build 20326.x This is the version family named in the incident notice. Record the complete build shown in your installation.
Trigger A third-party application generates a document and fills a Word template The documented failure occurs during template generation or population by the external application.
Application type Document-management or case-management software Microsoft describes the affected software category but does not publish vendor names.
Timing Word closes during the external app’s generation or population step A crash at another point may be a separate Word, add-in, template, or Windows problem.

To check the Word build, open Word and choose File > Account. The Product Information area shows the installed version and build. If Word closes too quickly, open another Office application and use its File > Account page to inspect the Microsoft 365 installation.

Also write down whether the external program launches Word, sends content to an already open window, or creates a file in the background. Those details help support teams distinguish template population from a normal Word edit or a mail-merge command. Note the template extension and whether the same crash occurs with a small test template, but do not change the production template until you have preserved a copy.

Step 1: Update Office before deeper troubleshooting

Microsoft’s general Office crash guidance begins with making sure Office is current. Updating is sensible even though the incident notice does not specify a particular fixed build or say that a manual update is the delivery mechanism for its mitigation.

  1. Open Word or another Office application.
  2. Go to File > Account.
  3. Choose Update Options > Update Now.
  4. Allow the update process to finish. Close and reopen Word if Office requests a restart.
  5. Return to File > Account and record the new version and build.

Reproduce the same operation after updating: use the same third-party application, the same template, and the same generation action. Changing several variables at once makes it harder to tell whether the original trigger remains.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Update Options is unavailable or controlled by your organization, do not bypass those controls with an unofficial installer. Give your administrator the old and new build numbers and the exact workflow. A managed update may be scheduled separately from the time you run the test.

Step 2: Test Word in Safe Mode

Safe Mode starts Word without the normal collection of add-ins and some custom startup components. Microsoft provides it as a diagnostic for Office crashes. It does not prove that an add-in caused this specific, already-mitigated incident.

  1. Close all Word windows.
  2. Open the Windows Run dialog.
  3. Enter winword /safe and press Enter.
  4. When Word opens, use it long enough to confirm that the application itself starts.

Safe Mode gives you two useful branches:

  • Word starts in Safe Mode: an add-in or customization is a plausible contributor. Continue with one-at-a-time isolation.
  • Word does not start in Safe Mode: do not assume the third-party application or an add-in is responsible. Microsoft’s general guidance moves toward Office repair or reinstall when Safe Mode does not resolve startup trouble.

Do not treat a successful Safe Mode launch as proof that the external document system is defective. Safe Mode changes Word’s loading environment; it only narrows the next diagnostic step.

Safe Mode is most informative when you repeat the same sequence under controlled conditions. First verify that Word can open and create a blank document in Safe Mode. Then, if the external application can be tested without risking a production file, run the same generation request. A difference between normal mode and Safe Mode points toward a loaded component, but it still does not identify which component without further isolation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 3: Isolate Word and COM add-ins individually

If Word opens in Safe Mode, inspect the add-ins that are disabled by that mode. Disable one component at a time, restart Word normally, and repeat the exact template-population workflow. Disabling everything at once can hide which component is involved.

  1. In Word, go to File > Options > Add-ins.
  2. Review the Word Add-ins and COM Add-ins categories shown on the page.
  3. Use the Manage selector at the bottom of the window to choose a category, then select Go to view its entries.
  4. Clear the checkbox for one add-in only and confirm the change.
  5. Close Word, reopen it normally, and run the same third-party template-generation action.
  6. If the crash remains, restore that add-in and test the next one. If the crash stops, repeat the test with only the suspected add-in disabled to confirm the result.

When one add-in changes the behavior, record its exact name and version and contact its vendor for an update. Microsoft’s general guidance recommends checking with the vendor when an add-in is implicated. Do not describe the add-in as the confirmed cause of Microsoft’s Version 2608 incident unless the vendor or Microsoft establishes that connection.

Keep a simple test log: add-in name, enabled or disabled state, Word build, template used, and result. This prevents a false conclusion caused by a changed template or a different generation request. Re-enable unrelated add-ins after testing so normal users do not lose required functionality.

If Safe Mode does not help

A failure that occurs even in Safe Mode points away from a normal Word or COM add-in, although it does not identify the root cause by itself. Microsoft’s general Office troubleshooting path is to repair the Office installation or reinstall Office rather than continuing to disable add-ins blindly.

Use your organization’s approved Office repair process if the installation is managed by an administrator. If you repair or reinstall, preserve the information needed to restore your Microsoft 365 account, custom templates, macros, and other user settings. Re-test the third-party workflow only after Word opens normally again.

  • Visualize information by using diagrams and charts
  • Illustrate concepts by using 3D models, icons, and screen clippings
  • Collaborate, track changes, and coauthor documents in real-time

A repair is a broad intervention. It is not listed by Microsoft as the specific fix for the mitigated template-population incident, so use it when the broader startup diagnostics justify it, not as the first response to a single crash that matches the known issue.

Use Normal.dotm only as a later diagnostic

Microsoft Learn’s Word troubleshooting guidance describes renaming Normal.dotm so Word creates a fresh copy. This can reveal corruption in the global template, but it is not a first-line response to the known third-party population issue.

Protect your customization first. The existing Normal.dotm can contain custom styles, toolbars, macros, and AutoText. Close Word, make a backup copy of the file, and then rename the original rather than deleting it. Start Word and allow it to create a new Normal.dotm, then test the document-generation workflow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the crash disappears, the result suggests a problem in the original global template, but it does not prove that the third-party application is incompatible. Restore customizations selectively from the backup and test after each change. If the crash is unchanged, close Word and restore the original file so your settings are not left in a reset state.

Because replacing Normal.dotm resets several personal settings at once, it can create a second problem while you are investigating the first. Treat the step as reversible housekeeping: preserve the original file, note its location, and avoid distributing a newly generated blank Normal.dotm to other users as a supposed universal fix.

Do not confuse this with the mail-merge crash

Microsoft’s September 2026 Word for Windows issue index lists a separate problem involving mail merge with .dot or .dotm templates as under investigation. That entry is not the same as the fixed incident involving a third-party application that generates and populates a document.

Use the workflow, not just the file extension, to classify the problem:

Observed workflow How to interpret it Next action
External document or case-management app fills a template and Word closes Matches Microsoft’s mitigated Version 2608 incident if the build also matches Update Office, then use Safe Mode and add-in isolation only if the crash persists.
Word’s mail-merge feature fails with a .dot or .dotm template Could correspond to the separate issue Microsoft listed as under investigation Do not apply the fixed-incident status to it; track the mail-merge case separately.
Word crashes while opening, editing, or printing without either workflow Not a documented match for the incident described here Use general Office and Word troubleshooting and collect a separate failure description.

What is still unknown

Microsoft has not published the names of the third-party applications involved. It also has not stated a fixed build number, explained whether every user receives the mitigation through an Office update or another delivery channel, or provided a manual switch for enabling it.

Those omissions matter when you communicate with an IT team or software vendor. Report the facts you can verify—Word edition, complete build, Windows environment, external application name and version, template extension, and the exact action that precedes the crash—rather than claiming that all document-management systems share one defect.

There is also no Microsoft statement that buying a new computer, purchasing a separate repair utility, or replacing the document-management product resolves this incident. The documented status is a product mitigation, so spending money should not be the first troubleshooting step.

A practical decision path

  1. Match the symptom. Confirm that a third-party document or case-management application is generating and populating a Word template and that Word is in the Version 2608 (Build 20326.x) family.
  2. Update Office. Use File > Account > Update Options > Update Now, restart if requested, and record the resulting build.
  3. Retest the original workflow. Keep the application, template, and generation action consistent so the comparison is meaningful.
  4. Start Safe Mode. Run winword /safe. If Word starts, investigate add-ins; if it does not, move toward Office repair or reinstall under your organization’s procedures.
  5. Isolate one add-in at a time. Use File > Options > Add-ins, disable one entry, restart normally, and repeat the same test.
  6. Contact the implicated vendor. Provide the build, add-in name and version, external application details, template type, and reproducible steps. Ask whether an updated integration is available.
  7. Use Normal.dotm later. Back it up and rename it only after the earlier diagnostics, because doing so resets customizations and may create additional work.

What not to do first

  • Do not claim that a particular Word build is the fix when Microsoft has not published one.
  • Do not assume every third-party document or case-management application is affected; Microsoft names no vendors.
  • Do not call add-in disabling the confirmed remedy for this incident. It is a general diagnostic that helps identify a component in your installation.
  • Do not edit the registry, delete templates, or buy replacement hardware as a first response. Microsoft’s specific notice says the issue has been mitigated, while its broader troubleshooting material offers less disruptive diagnostic steps first.
  • Do not replace or delete Normal.dotm without preserving the original. A reset can remove custom styles, toolbars, macros, and AutoText.

Information to collect before escalating

A precise report saves time because Microsoft’s notice covers a narrow workflow and does not name the external products. Include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The Word edition and complete version/build from File > Account.
  • Windows version and whether Office is managed by an organization.
  • The third-party application’s name and version.
  • Whether the application generates a new document, opens an existing template, or performs a mail merge.
  • The template extension, such as .dot, .dotm, or another format.
  • The exact action immediately before Word closes.
  • Whether Office Update changed the behavior.
  • Whether winword /safe starts Word and whether disabling a particular add-in changes the result.
  • Any crash time, Windows event information, or reproducible test document your organization permits you to share.

Send that report to the responsible IT team, the external application vendor, or the add-in vendor identified during testing. Keep the separate mail-merge issue description separate from the third-party template-population description so support staff can route it correctly.

Frequently asked questions

Which third-party applications are affected?

Microsoft says only “certain third-party document or case-management applications” and does not name vendors. Do not infer that every document-management system, legal case platform, or automation tool is affected.

Is there a fixed Word build I should install?

No fixed build number is published in the September 14, 2026 notice. Microsoft says the Word team mitigated the issue and marks it fixed, but it does not describe a manual installer or a required build. Keep Office current and record the build you actually have.

Will disabling add-ins fix the known incident?

Not as a confirmed matter. Safe Mode and one-at-a-time add-in testing are general diagnostics. They can identify a component in your installation when the crash changes, but Microsoft has not stated that add-ins are the cause of this incident.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if Word opens normally but crashes only when the external app fills a template?

That trigger is closer to Microsoft’s documented symptom than a crash during ordinary editing. Verify the Microsoft 365 edition and Version 2608 (Build 20326.x), update Office, and then test the same workflow again before making broader changes.

Is a .dot or .dotm mail-merge failure the same bug?

Not necessarily. Microsoft’s September 2026 index lists a separate mail-merge crash with those template types as under investigation. Classify the problem by the operation being performed, not only by the file extension.

Should I delete Normal.dotm?

No. If later diagnostics justify testing it, close Word, back up the file, and rename it so Word can create a fresh copy. The original may contain custom styles, toolbars, macros, and AutoText, so deleting it can cause avoidable loss of customization.

Bottom line

Word 365 closing while a third-party application fills a template is a documented Microsoft issue for the Version 2608 (Build 20326.x) family, and Microsoft marked that incident fixed after mitigating it on September 14, 2026. Because Microsoft has not published a fixed build or named the affected applications, the right response is to verify the match, update Office, and then diagnose persistent crashes with Safe Mode and one-at-a-time add-in isolation. Treat mail-merge failures with .dot or .dotm templates as a separate issue, and preserve Normal.dotm before using it as a later diagnostic.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which third-party applications are affected?

Microsoft identifies only certain third-party document or case-management applications and does not publish a vendor list. Do not assume every product in those categories is affected.

Is there a fixed Word build to install?

No fixed build number appears in Microsoft’s September 14, 2026 notice. Microsoft says the Word team mitigated the issue and marks it fixed, but does not provide a manual installation step.

Will disabling add-ins fix this incident?

Disabling add-ins is a general diagnostic, not a confirmed fix for this incident. Use Safe Mode and disable one Word or COM add-in at a time if the crash persists.

What if Word crashes only during template generation?

Verify that you use Word for Microsoft 365 and check whether the installation is in Version 2608 (Build 20326.x). Update Office, then repeat the same generation workflow before broader troubleshooting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a .dot or .dotm mail-merge crash the same problem?

Not necessarily. Microsoft listed a separate mail-merge issue involving .dot/.dotm templates as under investigation in September 2026. Classify the failure by its workflow.

Should I delete Normal.dotm?

No. Back it up and rename it only as a later diagnostic. It can contain custom styles, toolbars, macros, and AutoText, and replacing it resets those customizations.

The Bottom Line

Microsoft marked the Word for Microsoft 365 third-party template-population crash fixed after mitigating it on September 14, 2026. Verify the Version 2608 (Build 20326.x) workflow, update Office, and use Safe Mode plus one-at-a-time add-in testing only for persistent crashes. Do not confuse it with the separate .dot/.dotm mail-merge issue.
