How to Fix Windows Update When It Doesn’t Work (Windows 11 and 10)

When Windows Update will not check, download, install, or restart successfully, start with a backup and the built-in Windows Update troubleshooter. Then verify power, network, storage, time, administrator access, and peripherals before resetting the update cache and repairing Windows system components with DISM and SFC. The exact error code determines which branch to try next.

Identify exactly where Windows Update fails

“Windows Update doesn’t work” can describe several different failures. Before changing anything, note whether Windows cannot find updates, an update downloads but will not install, installation stops at a percentage, or Windows rolls the update back after restarting. Write down the complete error code and any text shown in Settings. That information prevents you from applying a repair aimed at the wrong layer.

Also record the update’s name or identification number from Settings > Windows Update > Update history. A failure during checking points more toward connectivity, services, or policy; a failure after downloading points toward cached files, storage, or component corruption; a rollback after reboot can point toward drivers or incompatible hardware. These are useful distinctions when a generic message says only that installation failed.

Back up documents, photos, browser data, and any other files you cannot replace before deleting update files, running repair commands, uninstalling an update, restoring the system, reinstalling Windows, or resetting the PC. A cloud sync is useful, but keep a separate copy on another drive if the files are important. Make sure you can sign back in and have license information for applications that might need to be reinstalled.

Run the Windows Update troubleshooter first

Microsoft describes Windows Update as an essential Windows component for security, stability, and current features. Its automated troubleshooter checks common service, configuration, and update-database problems. It is the least disruptive repair and should be run before manually deleting files or changing services.

Windows 11

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System, then Troubleshoot.
  3. Choose Other troubleshooters.
  4. Find Windows Update and select Run. On some Windows 11 builds, the same guided repair opens through the Get Help app.
  5. Apply any recommended correction, restart the PC, return to Settings > Windows Update, and select Check for updates.

Windows 10

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
  3. Select Windows Update, then Run the troubleshooter.
  4. Accept a suggested fix, restart, and select Check for updates again.

If the troubleshooter reports that it made a change, retry once before moving on. A failure message from the troubleshooter is also useful evidence: capture it with the original update error. Do not run several unrelated “optimizer” utilities at the same time, because they can change services or caches and obscure which action helped.

Confirm the conditions an update needs

Many apparent update failures are interruptions rather than damaged Windows components. Check each item before deeper repair:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Power: Plug in a laptop. Do not allow the machine to sleep or run out of battery during installation. Leave the lid open if closing it puts the system to sleep.
  • Internet: Use a stable connection. If possible, retry on another trusted network to distinguish a local connection problem from a Windows problem. Avoid repeatedly starting and cancelling a download.
  • Administrator access: Sign in with an account that can approve system changes. Work or school devices may also be controlled by an administrator or update policy, so a local user might not be able to override a deferral.
  • Free storage: Open Settings > System > Storage on Windows 11 or Settings > System > Storage on Windows 10. Remove or move large, nonessential files if the system drive is nearly full. Check the system drive itself, not only an external disk; installation needs temporary working space in addition to the package size.
  • Date and time: In Settings > Time & language > Date & time on Windows 11, or Settings > Time & Language > Date & time on Windows 10, enable automatic time and time-zone settings, then select Sync now if available. An incorrect clock can prevent secure connections to update servers.
  • External hardware: Disconnect unnecessary USB drives, docks, card readers, printers, and other peripherals. Leave only essential keyboard, mouse, display, and network equipment connected while retrying. This is particularly important for feature upgrades that load new drivers during restart.
  • VPN and security software: Temporarily disconnect a VPN and check whether third-party security software is blocking the update. Do not leave protection disabled after testing; restore its normal settings immediately. If a company security policy is enforced, ask the administrator rather than disabling it.

Restart after correcting any prerequisite, then try Windows Update once. If the same code returns, continue with the repair that matches the failure. Keep the computer connected to power during any later restart; a forced shutdown in the installation phase can create a second problem.

Reset the Windows Update download cache

Windows stores downloaded update packages in the SoftwareDistribution folder. A damaged or incomplete package can make checking or installation fail repeatedly. Clearing the folder contents forces Windows to obtain fresh packages; it does not delete personal documents, photos, or installed applications. It can, however, remove downloads that were waiting to install, so the next check may need to download them again.

  1. Press Windows key + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. In the Services window, locate Windows Update.
  3. Right-click it and choose Stop. Leave the Services window open.
  4. Open File Explorer and enter C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution in the address bar.
  5. Delete the files and folders inside SoftwareDistribution, not the parent Windows folder. If a file is in use, confirm that Windows Update is stopped and close other update-related windows before trying again.
  6. Return to Services, right-click Windows Update, and select Start.
  7. Restart Windows and select Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.

You may need administrator approval to stop the service or remove its contents. Do not rename or delete the entire C:Windows directory, and do not substitute random registry edits for this documented cache procedure. The first check after a reset can take longer because Windows must rebuild its local update data. If the service will not stop or start, record the exact message and use the service-error branch below rather than repeatedly deleting files.

Repair Windows component and system-file corruption

Use an elevated Command Prompt when the troubleshooter and cache reset do not solve the problem, or when Windows reports damaged system files. Run DISM before SFC because SFC uses the component store that DISM repairs.

Run DISM

  1. Open Start and type Command Prompt.
  2. Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  3. Enter DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and press Enter.
  4. Wait for the operation to finish. Progress can pause for a while; do not close the window merely because the percentage appears unchanged.

DISM normally obtains repair files through Windows Update. If Windows Update itself cannot provide them, Microsoft documents using a matching Windows installation source with the /Source and /LimitAccess options. The source must match the installed Windows edition and architecture; an incorrect image can leave the repair incomplete. An official installation USB is an enabling recovery accessory, not a cure by itself: create or obtain the media through Microsoft’s official process and use a source that corresponds to the installed release.

Run System File Checker

  1. In the same administrator Command Prompt, enter sfc /scannow.
  2. Allow the scan to reach 100 percent before closing the window or restarting.
  3. Read the final message. SFC can report that it found no violations, repaired corrupted files, or found corruption it could not repair.
  4. Restart Windows and run Check for updates again.

Microsoft says the sfc /scannow command scans protected system files and replaces corrupted files with a cached copy. If SFC cannot repair files, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once. Persistent corruption after that point is a reason to use the recovery options, provided your backup is current. Do not close the Command Prompt simply because SFC appears to pause; reaching 100 percent is part of the verification.

Choose the next step from the error code

An error code does not always identify one single cause, but it narrows the most useful check. Apply the matching branch after the general steps above.

Error code What it can indicate Manual action
0x800f0922 Insufficient storage or a component/update connection problem. Free space on the system drive, disconnect a VPN, verify the connection, restart, and retry. If the code persists, continue with DISM and SFC.
0x8007000E Insufficient available space or memory during update processing. Free storage, close demanding applications, restart, and retry. Check that the system drive—not only an external drive—has room.
0xC1900101 An incompatible or faulty driver, commonly exposed during a feature upgrade. Disconnect nonessential hardware and investigate recently changed network, storage, chipset, or display drivers. Install a current driver supplied for the exact Windows version and device, then retry. Avoid installing a driver from an unrelated model merely because its name looks similar.
0x80070422 The Windows Update service is disabled or stopped. Open services.msc, open Windows Update, set its startup configuration as appropriate for your system, select Start if it is stopped, and retry. If policy prevents changes, contact the device administrator.
0x8007000d Corrupted update files or a damaged update cache. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter, restart, clear C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution as described above, and check again.
0x800705b4 A timeout associated with connectivity, interruptions, storage, VPN, or security-software conflicts. Use a stable connection, disconnect a VPN, verify free space, remove unnecessary peripherals, check security software settings, restart, and retry.

These codes are clues rather than proof. For example, freeing space will not repair a damaged driver, and reinstalling a driver will not rebuild a corrupted update cache. If a branch produces a different code, use the new code as the more relevant clue. A code that appears only after a restart is especially worth comparing with recently changed hardware or drivers.

Compare the fixes by disruption and risk

Action Main target Disruption Data risk Administrator access Internet needed
Windows Update troubleshooter Common settings, services, and update-detection problems Low Low Usually required to apply changes Usually useful
Prerequisite checks and restart Power, connection, time, storage, and peripheral interruptions Low Low Not always Yes for checking updates
SoftwareDistribution cache reset Corrupted or incomplete downloaded update files Low to moderate Low; cached downloads are removed, not personal files Yes Yes to download packages again
DISM followed by SFC Windows component-store and protected system-file corruption Moderate; commands must finish Low when used as documented Yes DISM usually uses Windows Update unless a matching installation source is supplied
Uninstall a recent update A failure that began immediately after a specific update Moderate Some settings or security fixes may be rolled back Yes Not necessarily
Reinstall Windows, System Restore, or Reset this PC Persistent software or configuration damage High Can remove applications, settings, or personal data depending on the option Yes Varies by method

This order is intentional: start with reversible checks, then target the cache or component store, and reserve operations that roll back changes or reinstall Windows for persistent failures. The more disruptive the option, the more important it is to verify the backup and understand whether applications, settings, or personal files will be removed.

Escalate only after the low-risk repairs fail

Uninstall a recently installed update

If the problem started directly after an update, open Settings > Windows Update > Update history, choose Uninstall updates where available, select the recent update, and follow the prompts. Feature and quality updates do not always expose the same uninstall choices. Restart and test Windows before attempting another update. Rolling back a security fix is a temporary diagnostic step, not a permanent maintenance plan.

Reinstall the current Windows version

Microsoft’s recovery options include reinstalling the current Windows version. This can replace damaged operating-system files while preserving more of the existing setup than a full reset, depending on the method and edition. Read every confirmation screen, connect the PC to power, and maintain a verified backup before starting.

Use System Restore

A point-in-time restore can return system files, drivers, and settings to an earlier restore point without being a general substitute for file backup. It is most useful when a restore point predates the update failure. Review the affected applications and drivers shown by the wizard before confirming.

Reset this PC

Settings > System > Recovery > Reset this PC on Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Recovery on Windows 10, opens the reset workflow. The available choices can keep personal files or remove everything, but applications and settings may still be removed. Treat reset as a last resort, verify backups, and ensure you have installation credentials or license information for software you will need to reinstall.

Do not interrupt a reinstall, restore, or reset by holding the power button unless Windows explicitly reports that the process has failed. An interrupted recovery can leave the computer unable to start. If the computer is managed by an organization, check with its administrator before choosing any recovery option.

What Windows 10’s support end date means

Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. A Windows 10 PC that no longer receives updates may therefore be operating as designed rather than suffering from a repairable Windows Update client error.

Check the edition and hardware eligibility of the computer before spending time on repeated repairs. If the device can run a supported Windows release, plan a supported upgrade or clean installation after backing up. If it cannot, review Microsoft’s available migration and security options instead of assuming that clearing the cache will restore ongoing Windows 10 security servicing.

When the update still will not install

  • Capture the error code, update identification number, and the stage at which failure occurs.
  • Repeat the check after a full restart, not only after closing Settings.
  • Confirm that the same failure occurs with unnecessary USB devices and VPN disconnected.
  • Review Settings > Windows Update > Update history for a more specific failed package.
  • Check whether the device is managed by a company or school; policy can intentionally defer or block updates.
  • Use the recovery ladder only after confirming a backup and understanding which applications, settings, or files each option can remove.

A successful repair should be judged by the update completing and the PC restarting normally, not merely by the troubleshooter reporting that it ran. If a new error appears, stop repeating unrelated fixes and follow the branch for that new code.

As an optional shortcut after the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues, including broken system elements, invalid redirects and shared DLL problems, while also offering settings tweaks, temporary and cache-file cleanup, privacy and vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, file shredding and an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7; its free trial is available by category for at least two days before a paid subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will clearing SoftwareDistribution delete my personal files?

No. Stopping Windows Update and deleting the contents of C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution removes cached update downloads and local update data, not documents, photos, or installed applications. Windows downloads fresh packages after the service restarts.

What does error 0x80070422 mean?

It can mean the Windows Update service is disabled or stopped. Open services.msc, inspect Windows Update, start it if appropriate, and retry. A work or school policy may prevent changes, in which case contact the administrator.

Why does Windows Update fail with 0xC1900101?

That code can indicate an incompatible or faulty driver, often during a feature upgrade. Disconnect nonessential hardware and investigate recently changed network, storage, chipset, or display drivers. Use a current driver made for the exact device and Windows version.

Can I fix Windows 10 updates after October 14, 2025?

Microsoft ended free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. Repairing a damaged client may help an individual installation, but it cannot restore the ended support program; check upgrade eligibility and migration options.

When should I reset this PC?

Use Reset this PC only after the troubleshooter, prerequisite checks, cache reset, DISM, SFC, and appropriate update rollback or restore options fail. Back up first and read the choices carefully: applications and settings can be removed, and the “remove everything” option can erase personal data.

The Bottom Line

Back up first, run Microsoft’s troubleshooter, verify power, network, storage, time, administrator access, and peripherals, then reset the SoftwareDistribution cache and run DISM followed by SFC. Use the error code to target storage, drivers, services, or connectivity. Only after those low-risk steps fail should you uninstall an update, restore, reinstall, or reset Windows—and Windows 10 no longer receives free updates after October 14, 2025.
