If Windows shows 0x8007643, first verify the exact characters in Windows Update history. Microsoft’s published references do not define that code; many reports that use it are actually referring to 0x80070643. Record the complete error and KB number, then follow the Windows Update repair sequence below. The correct fix depends on the update type, Windows version and confirmed code.
Why the code needs to be verified
Error strings are easy to misread in a notification, screenshot or search result. The sequence 0x8007643 has no confirmed Microsoft definition in the references reviewed for this guide. Microsoft Q&A discussions use that string while describing failures associated with 0x80070643, including some Defender updates and the KB5034441 situation. Those community reports do not establish a universal meaning or a single cure.

Do not assume the failure is caused by malware, a damaged recovery partition, Windows Defender or one particular KB until Windows Update history identifies the package. A precise capture prevents you from applying a fix for the wrong problem.

| Record | Where to find it | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Full error code | Settings > Windows Update > Update history, or the failure notification | Confirms whether the string is 0x8007643, 0x80070643 or another code. |
| KB number | Update history entry, such as a cumulative update, Defender definition update or KB5034441 | Package-specific prerequisites and servicing guidance can differ. |
| Windows edition and version | Settings > System > About (Windows 11) or Settings > System > About (Windows 10) | The available troubleshooters and package requirements depend on the release. |
| Update category | Update history description | Separates cumulative, security, Defender, .NET and feature updates, which may fail for different reasons. |
| Whether a restart is pending | Windows Update page and Start menu power options | A pending restart can prevent another installation attempt from completing. |
Take a screenshot of the history entry if the code is difficult to copy. Keep the screenshot and the KB number together while you work through the steps.
Prepare the PC for a clean retry
Before running repair commands, remove the common conditions that interrupt an update. Retry the update after making these checks rather than changing several unrelated settings at once.
- Connect the computer to reliable mains power. Avoid attempting a major update on a nearly empty battery.
- Confirm that another device can reach the internet through the same connection. If the connection is intermittent, wait for a stable link before starting the download.
- Sign in with an account that has administrator rights. Windows may need elevation to repair services or system files.
- Open the date and time settings, enable automatic time and time-zone selection, and use the synchronization option. An incorrect clock can interfere with update validation.
- Disconnect nonessential USB drives, docks and other external hardware. Leave connected only the keyboard, mouse and hardware needed to operate the PC.
- Close applications that may restart the computer or consume the connection, then save your work.
These checks do not identify the code’s meaning; they simply remove conditions that can make a valid update fail.
Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
Microsoft provides a guided troubleshooter. It can detect common service, configuration and download problems and may apply a correction automatically.
Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Select System, then Troubleshoot.
- Open Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run.
- Follow the prompts in Get Help or the troubleshooter window. Allow it to finish rather than closing it when it appears to pause.
- Restart the PC when prompted, even if the troubleshooter reports that no change was necessary.
- Return to Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
Windows 10
- Open Settings.
- Choose Update & Security, then Troubleshoot.
- Select Additional troubleshooters.
- Choose Windows Update and select Run the troubleshooter.
- Apply any recommended action, restart, and check Windows Update again.
If the same package fails again, keep its KB number and code. Continue with the cache reset instead of repeatedly pressing Check for updates without changing anything.
Reset the Windows Update download cache
Windows stores downloaded update files in the SoftwareDistribution folder. Microsoft identifies corrupt cache files as one possible source of update failures. Clearing the folder makes Windows download a fresh copy; it does not remove your personal files.
- Press
Windows + R, typeservices.msc, and press Enter. - In the Services window, locate Windows Update.
- Right-click it and choose Stop. Leave the Services window open.
- Open File Explorer and enter
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionin the address bar. - Select the contents of that folder and delete them. If Windows says a file is in use, confirm that the Windows Update service is stopped; do not delete the SoftwareDistribution folder itself.
- Return to Services, right-click Windows Update, and choose Start.
- Restart the computer, open Windows Update and select Check for updates.
Windows rebuilds the cache as it downloads the package. The first scan after a reset can take longer than usual.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRepair the Windows image and protected system files
If the cache reset does not help, repair the component store and then check protected system files. Run the commands in an elevated Command Prompt, one at a time.
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command and press Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth - Wait for DISM to reach completion. Closing the window while it is working can leave the repair unfinished.
- After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow - Wait for System File Checker to finish, then restart Windows.
- Open Windows Update and retry the specific update.
DISM repairs the Windows image that supplies system components; SFC checks protected files against that repaired image. If either command reports that it could not complete, retain the exact message for support rather than repeatedly interrupting it.
When one KB keeps failing
A repeated failure of one named package requires package-specific checking. Do not substitute a generic fix for a prerequisite that the package requires.

Identify the release first
Use the Windows version and edition recorded earlier, then match the KB to that release. Microsoft’s servicing-stack and prerequisite guidance can differ between Windows versions. Check whether the package requires a servicing-stack update or another prerequisite, and follow the instructions for that exact release.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Separate update categories
- Cumulative or security update: verify the release, servicing-stack level and prerequisites before attempting another installation.
- Microsoft Defender definition update: record the definition update entry and its code separately from a failed Windows component update. The fact that community posts mention Defender alongside
0x80070643does not prove that every occurrence has the same cause. - .NET update: use the package name and Windows version when checking prerequisites; do not infer requirements from a different .NET release.
- Feature upgrade: confirm available storage and the supported upgrade path for the installed edition before retrying.
If the same KB fails after the troubleshooter, cache reset and component repair, collect the Windows version, full code, KB number, update history screenshot and the output of DISM and SFC. Persistent enterprise cases may require diagnostic logs for Microsoft support.

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. In October 2026, a Windows 10 PC that cannot install an update may be affected by its unsupported lifecycle as well as by a local configuration problem. You can still document and repair a specific installation failure, but decide whether continued troubleshooting is worthwhile compared with moving to a supported Windows release or an available support program for the device.
Before an upgrade or major recovery operation, back up personal files. Microsoft notes that a USB drive may be needed when an upgrade does not have enough free storage. A USB flash drive is therefore useful for backup or recovery preparation, but it is not a repair for the error itself.
How to interpret the result
The update installs after the troubleshooter
Keep the recorded code and KB with your maintenance notes. No further repair is needed unless another update fails.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
The update installs after clearing SoftwareDistribution
The previous download cache was a likely contributor. Windows will recreate the folder as future updates are downloaded.
DISM or SFC reports repairs
Restart before testing Windows Update again. If the same KB still fails, move to the package-specific prerequisite check rather than assuming the system-file repair addressed the package requirement.
The code remains unclear
Return to Update history and copy the complete entry. A screenshot showing the exact characters and KB is more useful than a search phrase typed from memory. The string 0x8007643 should not be assigned a cause until it is confirmed.
Several different updates fail
Repeat the preparation checks, run the troubleshooter and complete the cache and component repairs in order. Record whether failures affect cumulative updates, Defender definitions, .NET or feature upgrades; the pattern helps distinguish a general servicing problem from a package-specific prerequisite.

Optional shortcut
Outbyte PC Repair is an optional shortcut for checking and repairing more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements, invalid redirects and shared DLL files. It can also adjust settings, clean temporary and cache files, provide privacy and vulnerability checks, offer a real-time boost, file shredder and app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7 and offers a category-based free trial of at least two days before a paid subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it; results vary, and no tool repairs every update failure or crash.
