Start by verifying the code and the device. Microsoft’s current Windows Update guidance does not define 0x800745D. The documented Windows access-denied code is 0x80070005, which can occur when an update cannot access required files, folders, registry entries, or when security software or policy blocks it. Recheck every character in the message, confirm that you are working on a Windows PC rather than an Xbox, and then follow Microsoft’s repair order: run the Windows Update troubleshooter, check administrator and connectivity prerequisites, reset the update cache, and repair Windows components with DISM and SFC.

What error 0x800745D means

There is an important distinction between the code you see and the code Microsoft documents. Microsoft’s current Windows Update troubleshooting and common-error tables do not list 0x800745D as a defined Windows Update error. Microsoft does document 0x80070005, also known as E_ACCESSDENIED, for cases in which the update process cannot access required files, folders, or registry entries. Changed permissions, security software that locks update files, and organization policies are among the documented causes.

That makes a transcription error plausible. A screenshot can contain a zero, the letter “O,” a missing digit, or a code copied from a different dialog. An exact-code page from a software vendor describes 0x800745D broadly as an update-code problem associated with incorrect settings or invalid system entries, but that is not a Microsoft definition. Treat that description as a lead, not proof of the cause.

The sequence below is designed for a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC. An older Xbox community report dated October 22, 2014, shows 800745D in an Xbox One E305 system-update context. If the message appears on an Xbox, stop using the Windows instructions and use the Xbox recovery path for that console.

Identify the exact situation before changing anything

Correct identification prevents you from changing Windows permissions when the problem is actually a different error or a console update.

What to confirm Why it matters What to record
Device platform Windows Update procedures do not repair an Xbox One E305 update. Windows PC, Xbox, or another device
Exact code and wording 0x800745D is not currently defined by Microsoft; 0x80070005 is the documented access-denied code. Screenshot or character-for-character transcription
Windows edition and version Settings paths differ between Windows 11 and Windows 10, and managed editions may have policy restrictions. Windows 11 or 10, edition, and version/build
Update identifier A failed cumulative update can be investigated separately from the servicing stack or feature update. KB number, if the error displays one
Account control Repair commands and service changes require administrator rights. Whether you can approve an administrator prompt
Management status Employer or school policies can intentionally restrict updates or permissions. Whether the PC is work- or school-managed

Do not delete folders or reset permissions until this information is written down. Microsoft also recommends backing up personal files before troubleshooting. A backup does not fix Windows Update, but it limits the consequences of an unrelated mistake during advanced repair.

Check the basic prerequisites

Complete these low-risk checks before running repair commands:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Connect the PC to reliable internet and, for a laptop, connect the charger.
  • Sign in with an account that has administrator access, or have an administrator perform the steps.
  • Disconnect unnecessary external storage, docks, and other USB hardware. Leave only the keyboard, mouse, display, and networking equipment needed to operate the PC.
  • Open the date and time settings and enable automatic time and automatic time-zone selection. Use the option to synchronize the clock.
  • Save work and close applications before restarting. A pending restart can prevent a new update attempt from starting cleanly.

These checks address prerequisites in Microsoft’s Windows Update guidance. They do not establish that the undocumented code is caused by a clock, cable, or accessory; they simply remove common conditions that can interrupt servicing.

Run the built-in Windows Update troubleshooter

Windows 11

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
  3. Find Windows Update and select Run. If your build opens the Get Help troubleshooter instead, follow its prompts.
  4. Allow the troubleshooter to inspect and apply the changes it reports. Record any message it gives you rather than dismissing it without reading.
  5. Restart the PC, return to Settings > Windows Update, and select Check for updates.

Windows 10

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Choose Update & Security > Troubleshoot.
  3. Select Additional troubleshooters, choose Windows Update, and select Run the troubleshooter.
  4. Complete the suggested actions, restart the PC, and try Windows Update again.

The troubleshooter is the safest first repair because it can correct supported configuration problems without asking you to edit protected folders. If it reports that it could not identify a problem, continue with the cache reset rather than repeatedly running the same scan.

Reset the Windows Update download cache

A damaged or incomplete download in the update cache can make the same update fail repeatedly. Microsoft’s supported sequence is to stop the Windows Update service, remove the contents of the cache folder, and start the service again. You need administrator approval for the service change.

  1. Press Windows key + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. In the Services window, locate Windows Update. Right-click it and choose Stop. Leave the Services window open.
  3. Open File Explorer and enter C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution in the address bar.
  4. Delete the contents inside SoftwareDistribution, not the Windows folder itself. If Windows says a file is in use, confirm that the Windows Update service is stopped; do not force-delete a file that remains locked.
  5. Return to Services, right-click Windows Update, and choose Start.
  6. Restart Windows, then select Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.

Deleting the contents removes downloaded update data; it does not remove your personal documents. Windows recreates the cache as needed. If the service cannot be stopped, or if an access-denied message appears while deleting the contents, skip repeated attempts and proceed to the access-permissions section instead of changing ownership at random.

Repair the component store and protected system files

Windows Update relies on the component store and protected system files. Microsoft’s documented command-line sequence is DISM first, followed by System File Checker. DISM repairs the Windows image that SFC uses as a source; running SFC first can leave it without a healthy repair source.

  1. Open Start and type Command Prompt.
  2. Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  3. Run this command and wait for it to reach completion:
    DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  4. When DISM finishes, run:
    sfc /scannow
  5. Wait for SFC to complete at 100 percent. Do not close the window because progress appears to pause at some percentages while files are checked.
  6. Restart the PC even if a command reports that it found no violations.
  7. Try Windows Update again and note whether the code, the KB number, or the wording changes.

These commands can take considerable time, especially on a computer with a slow drive or a large component store. A message that repairs were completed is useful evidence, but it does not prove that an undocumented 0x800745D condition has a single known cause. The meaningful test is whether the same update installs after the restart.

If the code is actually 0x80070005: investigate access denial

If the screenshot or event log shows 0x80070005 rather than 0x800745D, follow the access-denied explanation Microsoft provides. The update process may be blocked from reading or writing a required location.

Security software locks

Security software can lock files while Windows Update is replacing them. Do not broadly disable protection or leave the PC unprotected. Instead, check the security product’s event or quarantine history for a blocked Windows servicing operation. On a managed computer, ask the administrator to review the policy. If a temporary exclusion is approved by the responsible administrator, use the narrowest possible scope and restore the normal protection immediately after testing.

Changed file and registry permissions

Manual permission changes made by cleanup utilities, migration tools, or an administrator can remove the access Windows servicing expects. Avoid taking ownership of the entire Windows directory or granting full control to everyone; those changes can weaken the operating system and create new failures.

Advanced administrators can compare permissions on the Windows component store and the update cache with Microsoft’s documented access-denied repair procedure. Microsoft specifically documents resetting permissions on WinSxS and SoftwareDistribution with icacls, followed by a restart. Because an incorrect account, inheritance setting, or command can make Windows less secure, use the Microsoft procedure for your exact Windows version and preserve the current settings before changing them.

Policy restrictions

Group Policy, mobile-device management, or an organization’s update ring can deny access or defer updates. If Settings > Windows Update says that an organization manages some settings, do not work around it with registry edits. Contact the employer or school help desk and provide the exact code, KB number, Windows version, and time of failure.

Use CBS.log for evidence

For persistent failures, an administrator can inspect %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log. Search around the time of the failed update for entries containing the code, the KB identifier, access denied, or a file path. The log is diagnostic evidence, not a repair by itself. Record the specific component or path named there before considering any permission change.

Check whether Windows 10 is still eligible for the update

Microsoft states on its current troubleshooter page that free Windows 10 updates and support ended on October 14, 2025. If the affected PC is running Windows 10 after that date, an inability to receive a newer update may reflect the product lifecycle rather than the undocumented code alone. Confirm the edition, version, and update channel before spending time on permission repairs. A supported Windows 11 device follows the Windows 11 troubleshooting path above; a Windows 10 device may require an organization’s extended-support arrangement or a migration decision outside this error procedure.

Retry methodically and record the result

After each major repair, perform one clean test instead of stacking several uncontrolled changes together.

  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Open Settings > Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates, or retry the specific update if its KB number is shown.
  4. Wait for the installation attempt to finish. Do not shut down while Windows is applying the update.
  5. Record the result: installed successfully, a new code, the same code, or a message that the update is not applicable.

If the code changes after DISM and SFC, that is useful diagnostic information. If the same update fails after the troubleshooter, cache reset, and system-file repair, stop repeating those actions. Move to the CBS log, security-software review, or administrator escalation so the next step is based on evidence.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming the code is authoritative: Microsoft does not currently define 0x800745D as a Windows Update code, so verify the transcription first.
  • Applying Windows advice to an Xbox: the older Xbox One E305 report uses a similar-looking number but a different platform and recovery process.
  • Deleting the wrong folder: clear only the contents of C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution after stopping Windows Update.
  • Running SFC before DISM: the Microsoft sequence is DISM, then SFC.
  • Taking ownership of Windows folders indiscriminately: broad permission changes can create security and servicing problems.
  • Ignoring management controls: a school or employer may intentionally block changes that a personal PC would allow.
  • Repeating a failed fix indefinitely: once the supported sequence has been completed, gather logs and escalate rather than making increasingly risky edits.

Optional shortcut after the manual fixes

As an optional shortcut, Outbyte PC Repair can check and repair some common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements and invalid entries, and it includes cleanup and an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7; its category-based free trial lasts at least two days before a subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.
