Windows Update error 0x800745D is not defined in Microsoft’s current Windows Update documentation. Before changing anything, copy the complete message and verify every character: 0x800745D is not the same as 0x8007045D. Then record your Windows edition, version and build, the KB number that failed, and whether the message appeared in Windows Update or during another operation. Use the manual sequence below, beginning with Microsoft’s built-in troubleshooter.

What the code tells you—and what it does not

An error code is useful only when it is transcribed correctly and tied to the operation that produced it. Microsoft’s current Windows 10 and Windows 11 Windows Update pages do not define 0x800745D. That means there is no documented, code-specific Microsoft remedy that can safely be applied from the characters alone.

A very similar-looking value, 0x8007045D, appears in a Microsoft Q&A entry describing an input/output device error during backup. The extra zero after 8007 changes the code and the context. A backup or file-copy failure should not be treated as a Windows Update failure simply because the numbers look alike.

Search results that attach a generic explanation to 0x800745D are not enough to establish an official meaning. Do not infer that the message proves malware, a failing hard drive or a damaged registry. First establish exactly where the message came from.

Make a diagnostic record

Write down these details before you retry the update. A screenshot is useful, but keep the text in a note as well so it can be searched or supplied to support.

  • The complete error text, including punctuation and whether the code is 0x800745D or 0x8007045D.
  • Whether the failure occurred in Windows Update, Windows backup, a file copy, an installer or another application.
  • Your Windows edition and version: Windows 10 or Windows 11, plus the build number shown by winver.
  • The KB update number shown in Windows Update history, if one is listed.
  • Recent changes such as a driver installation, security-software change, storage change or forced shutdown.

Press Windows key + R, enter winver, and select OK to capture the version and build. In Windows Update, open Update history and note the failed KB entry. These facts determine whether later servicing instructions apply to your installation.

Prepare Windows before troubleshooting

Save open work and connect the computer to reliable power. A laptop should remain on its charger during servicing. Confirm that you can reach ordinary websites, and sign in with an account that has administrator rights; several repair actions cannot complete from a standard account.

Temporarily disconnect nonessential USB storage, card readers, docks, external drives and other peripherals. Leave the keyboard, mouse, display and network connection attached. An external device can interrupt detection or make an update target ambiguous. Reconnect devices one at a time after Windows Update is working again.

Do not begin by editing the registry or downloading a generic “repair” package. The code has not been established as a documented Windows Update value, so an irreversible change can make diagnosis harder without addressing the real failure.

Run Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter first

Microsoft says its Update Troubleshooter can help when an error code appears while updates are downloaded or installed. It is the least disruptive first step and records or corrects common service and configuration problems.

Windows 11

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System, then Troubleshoot.
  3. Choose Other troubleshooters.
  4. Find Windows Update and select Run.
  5. Allow the checks and any suggested repair to finish. Read the result instead of closing the window immediately.
  6. Restart the computer, even if the troubleshooter says no change was required.
  7. Return to Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.

Windows 10

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Update & Security, then Troubleshoot.
  3. Select Additional troubleshooters.
  4. Choose Windows Update and select Run the troubleshooter.
  5. Apply the recommended action, restart Windows and check for updates again.

If the troubleshooter reports that it could not identify a problem, that is not proof that the update is healthy; it simply means the automated checks did not find a supported correction. Continue with the manual checks rather than repeating the same run indefinitely.

Verify power, network, permissions and time

Windows Update needs a stable connection to contact Microsoft’s update service and enough time to stage files. Check the following in order:

  • Confirm that Wi-Fi or Ethernet shows a normal connection and that another website loads. If your network uses a sign-in portal, complete it before checking for updates.
  • Use an administrator account or provide administrator credentials when Windows requests them.
  • Keep the computer awake until the download and restart have completed. Do not force it off during an update phase.
  • Open Settings > Time & language > Date & time in Windows 11, or Settings > Time & Language > Date & time in Windows 10. Turn on automatic time and automatic time-zone selection where those options are available, then select Sync now.
  • Remove unnecessary external storage, docks and peripherals for the next update attempt.

An incorrect clock can cause secure connections or update metadata to be rejected even when the internet connection itself appears normal. After synchronizing, restart once and retry the specific KB update.

Reset the Windows Update cache

A damaged or incomplete download can remain in the Windows Update working folders. Microsoft’s general checklist includes stopping the Windows Update service, deleting the contents of C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution, and starting the service again. This removes cached update files; it does not remove your personal documents.

Use the Services console

  1. Press Windows key + R, type services.msc, and select OK.
  2. In the list, locate Windows Update. Right-click it and choose Stop. Leave the Services window open.
  3. Open File Explorer and enter C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution in the address bar.
  4. Select the items inside that folder and delete them. Delete the contents, not the SoftwareDistribution folder itself. If Windows says a file is in use, return to Services and confirm that Windows Update is stopped; restart the computer and repeat the deletion if necessary.
  5. Return to Services, right-click Windows Update, and choose Start.
  6. Restart Windows, open Settings > Windows Update, and select Check for updates.

The first scan after a cache reset can take longer because Windows must rebuild local update data. Do not interrupt it merely because progress appears slow. If the same KB fails again, note the new message and preserve the code rather than assuming the cache step was the wrong fix.

Repair Windows component and system-file corruption

Microsoft Learn’s servicing guidance recommends checking for Windows file corruption and confirming prerequisite servicing updates when installation fails. Run these checks from an elevated terminal so Windows can repair the component store before protected system files are verified.

Run DISM, then System File Checker

  1. Open Start, type Terminal or Command Prompt, right-click the result, and select Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  2. Run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and wait for it to reach completion. Keep the computer connected to power and the internet while it works.
  3. When DISM finishes, run sfc /scannow. This verifies protected Windows files against the repaired component source.
  4. Restart Windows after both commands complete, then try the failed update once.

DISM or SFC may report that no integrity violations were found, that corruption was repaired, or that some files could not be repaired. Record the exact result. A clean result does not identify the mysterious code, but it rules out one important class of Windows corruption; an unrepaired result is a reason to follow Microsoft’s build-specific servicing instructions rather than repeatedly retrying the same update.

Check servicing prerequisites for the exact build

Some cumulative updates require a prerequisite servicing update. Use the Windows version, build and failed KB from your diagnostic record to locate Microsoft’s instructions for that combination. Install only packages intended for the same edition and architecture. Do not substitute a package because its number looks similar, and do not use a third-party download that does not identify the matching build.

After a prerequisite is installed, restart if Windows requests it and check Update history before installing the original KB again. If the prerequisite itself fails, preserve that new KB number and message; it is more actionable than the ambiguous code alone.

Update third-party drivers cautiously

Microsoft’s general Windows Update checklist also recommends updating third-party drivers. A driver changed shortly before the failure is particularly relevant, especially for storage, network, chipset or security hardware.

  1. Open Device Manager and review devices showing a warning icon.
  2. For a recently changed device, open its Properties and review the Driver tab for the provider, date and version.
  3. Use the hardware manufacturer’s official driver package that matches your Windows edition and architecture. Avoid mixing packages from an unrelated model.
  4. Restart Windows and retry the KB update.

Do not remove a working driver solely because the code is unexplained. If a driver update introduces a new problem, use the device’s Roll Back Driver option when available, or restore the backup supplied by the hardware manufacturer.

Separate a Windows Update failure from an I/O error

If the message appeared while copying files, restoring a backup or writing to external storage, stop applying Windows Update remedies. Recheck the transcription first. The documented Microsoft Q&A example for 0x8007045D concerns an input/output device error during backup, not the undocumented 0x800745D string.

For a non-update operation, record which drive, cable, dock or destination was involved and whether the failure follows that device. Disconnecting unnecessary hardware and testing the intended operation with only the required storage path can distinguish a Windows Update problem from a device or connection problem. Keep the original message and operation in your support request so the issue is routed to the right troubleshooting path.

If the update still fails

At this point, avoid random registry edits, script bundles and downloads that promise a guaranteed repair. Escalate with a complete evidence packet:

  • The exact error text and a screenshot.
  • Windows edition, version and build from winver.
  • The failed KB number and the date and time of the attempt.
  • Whether the failure happened during download, installation, restart or another task.
  • The troubleshooter result, cache-reset result, DISM output and SFC output.
  • Recent driver, storage, security-software or shutdown changes.

Use Microsoft’s support channels or documentation that matches your Windows build. A support technician can ask for Windows Update logs or servicing logs; provide the files they request rather than attaching unrelated personal data. If the KB changes after a successful retry, treat the new KB and message as a separate incident.

How the available approaches differ

Approach Official or third-party Main role Reversibility Administrator rights Build or KB matching
Windows Update troubleshooter Official Microsoft path Diagnostic checks and supported automatic corrections Generally low-impact May request elevation Designed for Windows 10 and 11 Windows Update
Service and cache reset Official checklist step Removes cached update downloads and rebuilds local update data Reversible in outcome, but cached downloads must be obtained again Yes Applies to the affected Windows installation
DISM and SFC Microsoft system tools Checks and repairs component or protected-file corruption Changes system files when repairs are needed Yes Run against the installed Windows image
Prerequisite servicing update Official Microsoft package or instruction Provides a required servicing component for a specific update Creates a normal installed update and may require a restart Yes Must match edition, architecture, build and KB requirements
Third-party repair utility Third-party Optional automated diagnosis or repair Varies; review every proposed change Often required for system changes Verify Windows-version support and keep the exact error record

The official Microsoft sequence is the baseline because it is documented for Windows Update. A third-party utility cannot establish what an undocumented code means, and it should not replace build-specific servicing guidance or a support escalation.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Confusing the two codes: compare every character, especially the zero in 0x8007045D.
  • Deleting the wrong folder: remove the contents of SoftwareDistribution only after stopping Windows Update.
  • Repeating a failed attempt without recording the KB: different KB packages can fail for different reasons.
  • Installing a mismatched update: edition, architecture and build all matter for prerequisite packages.
  • Interrupting a restart: keep power connected and allow servicing to finish.
  • Assuming a generic web explanation is official: the exact string is not defined in the current Windows Update documentation.
  • Making irreversible changes too early: registry edits and broad “repair” downloads can obscure the original cause.

A practical decision path

  1. If the message is in Windows Update, capture the full text, build and KB, then run the Windows Update troubleshooter and restart.
  2. If the troubleshooter does not resolve it, verify power, internet access, administrator rights, automatic time and disconnected peripherals.
  3. Reset the Windows Update cache and retry once.
  4. Run DISM and SFC, then follow servicing guidance that matches the failed KB and build.
  5. Update a relevant third-party driver when a recent driver change or warning device points in that direction.
  6. If the message came from backup or file copying, verify whether the code is actually 0x8007045D and switch to storage or I/O troubleshooting.
  7. If the code remains unidentified, escalate with the complete evidence packet instead of applying an unverified generic fix.

As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can look for and, where possible, fix more than 100 common Windows issues, including broken system elements, invalid redirects and shared DLL problems; it can also clean temporary and cache files and adjust settings that affect CPU, RAM and disk load. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7 and offers a category-based free trial of at least two days before a paid subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, results vary, and no utility repairs every crash.
