If Windows shows “denied 08007045d” during an update, first normalize the code to 0x8007045D. Microsoft classifies 0x8007045D as an I/O device error: Windows cannot reliably read from or write to a device. It does not, by itself, prove that your internal system drive has failed. Back up your personal files, then troubleshoot attached USB hardware, connections, available space, and storage health in that order.

What “08007045d” means

The string is usually a mistyped or poorly rendered version of 0x8007045D. The leading 0x identifies a hexadecimal Windows error code; the remaining characters are 8007045D. “Denied” is a description users commonly give the failed update, not Microsoft’s technical category.

An I/O (input/output) error occurs when Windows tries to read update files, write them to storage, or communicate with a device and the operation fails. The device involved might be an external drive, USB stick, card reader, dock, hub, cable, port, storage controller, removable media, or an internal drive. The code narrows the problem to an unreliable read/write path, but it does not identify one failed part.

Protect your files before troubleshooting

Do the backup before resetting Windows Update, repairing components, checking a disk, or using recovery media. Microsoft’s Windows Update guidance recommends backing up first because an I/O problem can worsen while a drive is being read or written.

Use an external backup drive

Copy documents, photos, project folders, browser exports, and any other files you cannot replace to an external USB backup drive or another storage location. Open several copied files from the backup to confirm that the copy is usable. If the computer repeatedly freezes, the drive disappears, or copying produces read/write errors, stop stressing the suspect device and obtain professional help before attempting more repairs.

Keep the backup separate from the suspect hardware

Do not use the same removable disk that may be causing the update failure as the only backup destination. If several external devices are attached, label which one contains the backup and disconnect it while you test the update path.

What to try, in the safest order

The sequence below starts with reversible software checks and simple connection tests, then moves toward diagnostics and recovery. Stop when Windows Update completes successfully.

1. Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter

  1. On current Windows 11, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
  2. Find Windows Update and select Run.
  3. Allow the troubleshooter to finish and apply any changes it offers.
  4. Restart the computer, then return to Windows Update and select Check for updates.

Windows 10 uses the corresponding Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot path, where the Windows Update troubleshooter can be launched. The labels differ by edition, so use the path that matches your installed version.

2. Restart and test a second update attempt

A restart closes update processes and releases temporary device handles. After restarting, check for updates before changing anything else. If the update succeeds, reconnect removed peripherals one at a time and test again; this identifies the device that reintroduces the error.

3. Disconnect unnecessary USB equipment

Shut down the update attempt and unplug nonessential USB devices, including:

  • USB flash drives and external hard drives
  • Card readers and removable-media adapters
  • USB hubs and docking stations
  • Printers, scanners, cameras, and other storage-capable devices
  • Specialized adapters that are not required to start Windows

Leave the keyboard, mouse, display, network connection, and other equipment needed to operate the computer. Restart and run Windows Update again. If it works, reconnect each removed device individually, restarting the update check after each connection. A failure that returns only when one device is attached points to that device, its cable, its port, or its controller rather than proving the Windows system drive is defective.

4. Check ports, cables, and accessible storage connections

Power off before reseating any connection that is designed to be accessible. For an external device, try a different USB port and, if available, a known-good compatible cable. Avoid routing a problem device through a hub or dock during testing; connect it directly to the computer. For a removable drive or card, remove and reinsert it firmly.

Desktop owners who are comfortable opening the case can reseat accessible internal storage connections after shutting down and disconnecting power. Do not force connectors or open sealed devices. If another port and cable eliminate the error, retire the unreliable cable or port from update-related use.

5. Check free space on the Windows system volume

Windows needs working space to download, unpack, and stage an update. In File Explorer, check the free space on the volume that contains Windows, usually the system volume shown as Local Disk (C:). If it is nearly full, remove temporary files and other disposable data using Windows’ storage-cleanup controls, then empty the Recycle Bin and restart before checking for updates again.

Do not delete personal folders or unfamiliar system files simply to create space. If the volume fills again immediately, find the large, legitimate files consuming it and move them to a verified backup or another drive.

6. Run supported component and disk diagnostics

When the connection checks do not resolve 0x8007045D, use Windows’ supported component and disk diagnostic tools appropriate to your edition. Run them from an administrator account and allow each operation to complete without interruption. A component check can identify damaged Windows servicing elements; a disk check can reveal file-system or read/write problems.

Also review the storage device’s SMART information or the manufacturer’s diagnostic utility when one is available. The exact screens and thresholds vary by vendor, so treat a warning as a reason to secure another backup and plan replacement rather than as a precise prediction of remaining life.

7. Treat repeated hardware symptoms as a hardware problem

Escalate to a qualified repair provider or plan replacement if any of these continue:

  • Repeated read/write errors during diagnostics or file copies
  • A drive that disappears from File Explorer or firmware and later reappears
  • Diagnostics that fail, cannot complete, or report a storage-device fault
  • Several different cables and ports produce the same I/O error
  • Updates fail only when a particular external drive, card, hub, or dock is connected

Keep the backup current and avoid repeatedly retrying operations that make a failing device click, disconnect, or freeze. A replacement drive or professional data-recovery assessment may be safer than continuing software repairs.

8. Use recovery or installation media only after confirming the backup

If the error persists after the reversible steps and diagnostics do not identify a simple connection problem, recovery options or Windows installation media may be appropriate. Confirm that your personal files open from the backup first. Read every reset or reinstall screen carefully: some choices preserve personal files while others remove applications or data. If the storage device itself is failing, reinstalling Windows cannot make the hardware reliable and can increase the amount of writing performed on it.

How the troubleshooting choices compare

Use this guide to choose the next action without jumping straight to a reset.

Remedy Data risk Reversibility Technical effort What it helps distinguish
Back up personal files Protective; copies data rather than changing Windows Fully reversible Basic file-management skills Whether your important files are recoverable before repair
Windows Update Troubleshooter Low; applies Windows’ troubleshooting changes Generally reversible through normal settings Basic Settings navigation Common update configuration or servicing problems
Restart and check again Low Fully reversible Basic A transient lock or device-state problem
Disconnect peripherals Low; devices are unplugged, not erased Fully reversible Basic hardware handling A USB device, hub, dock, or removable drive involved in the I/O path
Try another port or cable Low Fully reversible Basic hardware handling A bad connection versus the device itself
Free space and remove temporary files Low when only temporary data is selected Some cleanup is reversible only through restoration or a backup Basic Windows storage management Whether staging space, rather than a failed device, is blocking the update
Component and disk diagnostics Usually low, but follow the tool’s warnings and back up first Diagnostic results are informational; repairs may change system data Intermediate Windows component damage, file-system errors, or failing storage
Recovery or installation media Potentially high; some choices remove apps or files Limited once a reset or reinstall starts Advanced Whether a clean or repaired Windows installation resolves a software-level failure after hardware checks

Interpreting the result

The update works with peripherals disconnected

Reconnect devices individually. The first device that causes 0x8007045D to return is the leading suspect. Test it with a different cable or port and inspect its own health before reconnecting it during future updates.

The update fails with nothing external attached

Focus on the system volume, internal storage connections, free space, and Windows component diagnostics. The code still does not prove that the internal drive has failed; a controller, file-system problem, or damaged servicing component can produce the same symptom.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Diagnostics report a failing or disappearing drive

Prioritize a verified backup and hardware support or replacement. Avoid repeated resets and reinstalls until the data is safe, because those operations write additional data to the affected storage.

Diagnostics pass but updates still fail

Repeat the troubleshooter and restart sequence, confirm available system-volume space, and consider recovery or installation media only after confirming the backup. If the failure continues across clean connection tests and supported diagnostics, provide the exact 0x8007045D code and the devices attached at the time to a repair professional.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming the code means a dead hard drive: it identifies an I/O category, not one confirmed component.
  • Calling the message a malware warning: the code alone does not establish an infection.
  • Resetting Windows before backing up: recovery choices can remove applications or personal data.
  • Testing every accessory at once: reconnect one device at a time so the trigger is identifiable.
  • Ignoring cables and hubs: an inexpensive connection fault can look like a storage failure.
  • Continuing after repeated disconnects or diagnostic failures: secure the data and obtain hardware help instead.
