Windows Update error 0x8007045D means Windows encountered an input/output (I/O) device error while reading or writing update data. The safest fix is to back up your files, run the Windows Update troubleshooter, reset the update components, and then test the disk, USB path, or installation media involved. If ordinary file operations also fail, treat the problem as a possible storage or connection fault rather than repeatedly retrying the update.

What error 0x8007045D means

Microsoft defines 0x8007045D as ERROR_IO_DEVICE: “The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.” During an update, Windows must download, read, write, unpack and stage many files. The code appears when one of those operations cannot complete.

The hexadecimal code does not identify the failed component. The blocked path might be the internal system SSD or hard drive, a second internal disk, an external drive, USB or SD media, an optical disc, a cable, a port, or installation media. Microsoft Q&A guidance also lists damaged system or program files, an incomplete download, faulty memory, and defective internal or removable storage as possible contributors. Those are diagnostic possibilities, not proof that any particular part has failed.

Use the error together with the symptom. If only Windows Update fails and normal files copy correctly, update components or a damaged download are more plausible. If copying files, opening folders or installing other software produces similar errors, investigate the storage path and connections first.

Protect your data before troubleshooting

Back up irreplaceable files before changing update folders or running disk repairs. Copy them to a known-good internal disk, external disk or network location and open several of the copied files to verify that the backup is usable.

  • Do not rely on a drive that is already reporting read errors as the only place for your backup.
  • If the problem involves a USB or SD device, stop unplugging it while files are being written; safely eject it whenever Windows allows.
  • Record the exact drive letter, port, cable and device involved. This makes it possible to tell whether a later test changed the failing path.
  • Keep the computer connected to reliable power. An interruption while Windows is replacing update files can create a second problem.

Disk repair can alter data in sectors that are difficult to read. A verified backup is more important than getting the update attempt finished quickly.

Quickly narrow down the failing path

Only Windows Update reports 0x8007045D; ordinary file copies work The update download, cache or servicing components may be inconsistent. Run the troubleshooter, then reset Windows Update components.
Copies to or from one external disk, USB stick or SD card fail The media, cable, enclosure or port may be interrupting I/O. Try a different known-good cable and port, then test the device on another computer if available.
Errors occur on the internal system drive as well as during updates The internal storage path or its file system needs priority diagnosis. Back up immediately, inspect storage events and run the appropriate disk check.
The error occurs while booting from or installing with USB/DVD media The media may be corrupt or incorrectly created. Recreate installation media from an official Microsoft image on known-good media.
The same drive shows repeatable read errors after cable and port changes There is device-level evidence, although the code alone is not proof of failure. Use the drive maker’s diagnostics or a qualified technician and plan replacement after the backup is safe.

1. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter

Windows 11

  1. Open Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
  2. Find Windows Update and select Run. On current Windows 11 releases, Microsoft also directs users to the automated troubleshooter in the Get Help app.
  3. Allow the diagnostics to complete and apply any proposed repair.
  4. Restart the PC, return to Settings > Windows Update, and select Check for updates.

Windows 10

  1. Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
  2. Select Windows Update > Run the troubleshooter.
  3. Restart when it finishes, then check Windows Update again.

Microsoft says the Get Help troubleshooter automatically runs diagnostics and attempts to fix most problems. It cannot repair a physically failing disk or a defective cable, so continue with the storage checks if the code returns.

2. Reset the Windows Update cache and services

A damaged or incomplete update download can remain in the update cache. The following Microsoft-style reset stops the services that use the cache, renames the existing folders rather than deleting them, and starts fresh folders the next time Windows Update runs.

Use an elevated Command Prompt

  1. Open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
  2. Run each command separately and wait for the command to finish:
net stop wuauserv
net stop bits
net stop cryptsvc
ren %systemroot%SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
ren %systemroot%System32catroot2 catroot2.old
net start cryptsvc
net start bits
net start wuauserv

If a service says it is not running, continue with the sequence. If a ren command reports that a file is in use, close Settings and other update-related windows, restart, and repeat the elevated sequence. Do not delete unrelated folders under C:Windows. The renamed folders can be removed later only after updates work and you no longer need their contents for diagnosis.

Restart Windows after the reset and check for updates. A successful reset points toward an update-component problem; it does not rule out a disk or connection fault if the same I/O error appears during other operations.

3. Test the storage path and physical connections

Check whether normal file I/O fails

Copy a few non-critical files between the locations involved in the update. Try both reading from and writing to the suspect drive. An error that follows one external drive, card reader, enclosure or cable is more informative than another update retry.

Change one connection at a time

  • Move a USB device to a different port directly on the computer, avoiding a hub for the test.
  • Replace a detachable USB, SATA or power cable with a known-good cable of the correct type.
  • For an SD card, test another reader and inspect the card for physical damage.
  • Reconnect an internal drive only if you are comfortable working inside the computer; otherwise use a qualified technician.

If the error disappears after one change, repeat the operation several times before treating the result as reliable. A loose connection can work intermittently.

Inspect Windows evidence

Open Event Viewer and look in Windows Logs > System around the time of the failure. Entries from storage-related components such as Disk, Ntfs, storahci, stornvme or volmgr can identify a repeated read, write or timeout. In Windows 11, you can also review Settings > System > Storage > Advanced storage settings > Disks & volumes for the affected disk. These indicators help establish a pattern; they are not, by themselves, a diagnosis that the drive must be replaced.

4. Run CHKDSK with the correct volume and a backup

Microsoft-hosted guidance for an update-installation occurrence recommends a full disk check and warns that repairing bad sectors can affect data on those sectors. Confirm the volume letter before running a command; the Windows installation is often C:, but it can differ in recovery or installation environments.

  1. Open Command Prompt (Admin).
  2. For an online scan that does not immediately schedule repairs, run:
chkdsk C: /scan

Replace C: with the correct volume. If the scan reports file-system problems, schedule a repair:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
chkdsk C: /f

Windows may say that the volume is in use and ask whether to schedule the check for the next restart. Type Y, restart, and let the scan complete. A deeper sector check can take many hours and places additional read activity on a failing disk:

chkdsk C: /f /r

Use /r only after your backup is secure and you understand the risk to difficult-to-read sectors. Do not interrupt a restart-time scan unless the computer is clearly unresponsive for an unusually long period. Review the result in Event Viewer afterward if the on-screen summary disappears.

5. Repair Windows component and system files separately

Resetting update components addresses the update cache. It is a separate task from checking Windows component corruption. If the troubleshooter and cache reset do not help, run the following from an elevated Command Prompt and save any error text.

  1. Repair the component store:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. When DISM finishes, check protected system files:
sfc /scannow

Restart after both commands and try Windows Update once more. If DISM or SFC cannot complete, keep the exact error and percentage at which it stopped. Repeating the same command without addressing a storage error will not fix a failing device.

6. Recreate installation or offline-update media

If 0x8007045D appears while reinstalling Windows, applying an offline update, or booting from a USB/DVD, the media itself can be the source of the I/O failure. Recreate it from an official Microsoft image using a known-good USB drive or blank disc. Use a different USB port during creation and installation, and safely eject the media when writing is complete.

Test the newly created media before concluding that Windows is defective. If two separately created media devices fail on the same computer while the devices work elsewhere, investigate the computer’s storage controller, port or internal drive. If one original USB fails but a new device works, retire the original media.

7. Decide when hardware diagnostics or replacement are justified

Software repair is appropriate when the symptom is limited to Windows Update and storage tests show no repeatable read or write errors. Hardware action becomes reasonable when the same device produces errors across independent operations, the errors follow the device rather than the port or cable, or manufacturer diagnostics report uncorrectable sectors or a failing health state.

  • Finish the backup before stress-testing a suspect drive.
  • Use the storage manufacturer’s diagnostic utility when available and record its exact result.
  • Replace an SSD, hard drive, USB stick, SD card, cable or enclosure only after the evidence identifies that part of the path.
  • After replacement, reinstall or restore Windows and then run Windows Update before reconnecting questionable removable media.

There is no authoritative percentage for how often a particular fix resolves 0x8007045D. The code is an error classification, not a failure-rate estimate, so a replacement decision should be based on repeatable device-level evidence.

Windows 10 lifecycle consideration

Microsoft Support states that free Windows 10 software updates, technical assistance and security fixes ended on October 14, 2025 (the support page was updated in 2026). That lifecycle date does not cause 0x8007045D, but it changes what “check for updates” can deliver on a Windows 10 PC. If the device remains on Windows 10, confirm whether the update you are trying to install is still offered for that edition and support arrangement. Do not interpret the end of free support as evidence that the storage hardware is bad.

Choosing the next remedy

Evidence after testing Best next step Avoid
Only the update process fails; file copies and disk checks are clean Run the troubleshooter and perform the service/cache reset. Replacing a drive without device-level evidence.
The error follows an external device or removable media Try another port, cable and reader, then test the media elsewhere. Continuing writes to media that cannot be read reliably.
CHKDSK, Event Viewer or diagnostics show repeatable internal-drive errors Preserve the backup and arrange drive diagnostics or replacement. Repeatedly running repair scans before securing data.
Failure occurs only with one installer USB/DVD Recreate the media from an official image on known-good media. Assuming the Windows image or computer is defective after one bad disc.
DISM or SFC reports corruption but storage operations are reliable Save the command output, restart and reassess Windows servicing. Mixing unrelated folder deletions into the update reset.

Optional shortcut after the manual fixes

As an optional shortcut for this non-driver Windows error, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements, invalid redirects and shared DLL files; it can also clean temporary and cache files and provide an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7, offers a free trial of at least two days by category and then requires a subscription. Results vary, it does not repair every crash, and it complements rather than replaces antivirus software.

Final checklist

  • Back up irreplaceable files to verified, known-good storage.
  • Run the Windows Update troubleshooter for your Windows version and restart.
  • Reset wuauserv, bits, cryptsvc, SoftwareDistribution and catroot2 from an elevated Command Prompt.
  • Test ordinary reads and writes, then change one USB port or cable at a time.
  • Review Event Viewer and storage-health indicators for repeatable evidence.
  • Run CHKDSK only against the correct volume and only after the backup is safe.
  • Use DISM and SFC as separate system-repair checks and save their output.
  • Recreate installation media when the failure occurs during an offline install or reinstall.
  • Replace hardware only when the evidence follows a specific device or diagnostics report a fault.
