Windows Update error 0x80070422 means the Windows Update service is disabled or stopped. The quickest supported fix is to open Services, change Windows Update to Automatic, start it, restart Windows, and check for updates again. If the service is already running, use the built-in troubleshooter, then clear the update cache. More invasive component-reset commands and installation media are fallback options.

What error 0x80070422 means

The code is sometimes typed as 0X080070422, with an extra zero. The documented Windows Update code is 0x80070422, also identified by Microsoft as ERROR_SERVICE_DISABLED. Microsoft describes it as: “0x80070422 | Windows Update service is disabled or stopped.” Windows cannot check for, download, or install updates while that service is unavailable.

This is normally a Windows service-state problem, not evidence that an update package itself is malicious. Start with the least disruptive repair and move down the list only if the previous step does not restore updating.

Before changing anything

  • Sign in to an account with administrator rights. Service changes and reset commands require elevation.
  • Save open work and disconnect any removable drive that is not needed. Restarting is part of several repair steps.
  • If you have important files on the PC, make a current backup before using component-reset commands or installation media.
  • Write down the exact code and any additional text shown by Windows Update. A different code may require a different procedure.

Fix 0x80070422 in the recommended order

1. Enable and start the Windows Update service

This is Microsoft’s direct remedy for this code.

  1. Press Win+R to open Run.
  2. Enter services.msc and press Enter. Approve the administrator prompt if Windows displays one.
  3. In the Services list, locate Windows Update and double-click it.
  4. Open the Startup type menu and select Automatic.
  5. Check Service status. If it says Stopped, select Start.
  6. Select Apply, then OK.
  7. Restart the PC. After signing in, open Windows Update and select Check for updates.

If the service was disabled, changing only the startup type may not start it immediately; use Start before selecting Apply. If Start is unavailable or Windows reports an error, leave the message visible and continue with the troubleshooter rather than repeatedly clicking the control.

2. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter

The troubleshooter can identify service and update components that the Services console does not explain. Use the path for your Windows edition.

Windows 11

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
  3. Find Windows Update and select Run.

Windows 11 may also offer the Windows Update troubleshooter through the Get Help app. Follow its prompts, allow it to apply a suggested repair, and restart when it finishes. Then return to Windows Update and select Check for updates.

Windows 10

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
  3. Select Windows Update, then choose Run the troubleshooter.

Restart after the troubleshooter completes and check Windows Update again. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. If this PC is still on Windows 10, treat a persistent update failure as a reason to evaluate migration to an eligible, supported Windows 11 device, not just as a one-time service error.

3. Clear the Windows Update cache

Use this step when Windows Update is set to Automatic and running but still fails. A damaged cached download can prevent a new update check. Clearing the contents forces Windows to build a fresh cache; it does not remove the Windows Update service itself.

  1. Press Win+R, enter services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Double-click Windows Update and select Stop. Choose Apply and OK.
  3. Open File Explorer and enter C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution in the address bar.
  4. Select the contents of that folder and delete them. Delete the files and subfolders inside SoftwareDistribution, not the folder itself.
  5. Return to services.msc, open Windows Update, select Start, and apply the change.
  6. Restart Windows and select Check for updates.

Some files may be locked if the service did not stop. Do not force-delete them while Windows is using them; verify that Windows Update shows Stopped, then try the deletion again. If the service will not stop or the cache immediately produces the same error, use the component reset below.

4. Reset update components from an elevated Command Prompt

This is more technical than clearing the cache and carries a greater risk of a command or path mistake. Use an elevated Command Prompt, type each line exactly, and wait for the command to finish before entering the next one.

  1. Open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator.
  2. Run the following commands in order:
net stop wuauserv
net stop bits
net stop cryptsvc
ren C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
ren C:WindowsSystem32catroot2 catroot2.old
net start cryptsvc
net start bits
net start wuauserv

The commands stop Windows Update (wuauserv), Background Intelligent Transfer Service (bits), and Cryptographic Services (cryptsvc), preserve the existing SoftwareDistribution and catroot2 folders by renaming them, and start the services again. Renaming rather than immediately deleting keeps a rollback point. If Windows reports that a service was not started, continue only after confirming that the later commands are being run in the same elevated window. If a ren command reports that the destination already exists, stop and inspect the folder names instead of adding random suffixes.

  1. Close Command Prompt and restart the PC.
  2. Open Windows Update and select Check for updates.

After Windows successfully downloads and installs an update, you can remove the old SoftwareDistribution.old or catroot2.old folders later if disk space is needed. Do not delete them during troubleshooting; retaining them gives you a clear rollback reference.

What to do when a step fails

The Windows Update service immediately stops

Reopen services.msc and confirm that Startup type remains Automatic. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter for your edition, restart, and test again. If it still stops, proceed to the component reset rather than repeatedly toggling the same setting.

Start is disabled or access is denied

Close Services, sign in with an administrator account, and reopen it. If the account is managed by an organization, a policy may control service settings; contact the administrator before changing them. Do not change unrelated services or registry values as a substitute for the documented Windows Update repair.

The cache cannot be deleted

Confirm that Windows Update is stopped in Services, close any File Explorer window opened inside SoftwareDistribution, and try again. If files remain locked, restart Windows and perform the deletion before opening Windows Update. If that still fails, use the elevated component-reset commands.

The reset commands return errors

Check that Command Prompt was opened with Run as administrator and that each path was entered exactly. A failure to rename a folder can mean that a previous reset already created a folder with the chosen suffix or that a process still has the folder open. Do not rename or delete unrelated folders. Restart, verify service status, and rerun only the command that failed after resolving the specific message.

Windows Update still shows 0x80070422 after all software steps

At that point, record which services start, whether the troubleshooter reports a repair, and whether the cache can be recreated. If the service is enabled and running but Windows still cannot update, use official installation media as a recovery path. Installation media is not a direct fix for a disabled service; it is a way to repair or reinstall Windows when normal servicing remains unusable.

Installation media as a recovery fallback

Microsoft provides installation-media creation for cases in which Windows cannot be repaired through normal update servicing. The USB route requires a blank flash drive with at least 8 GB. The drive is used to create recovery or installation media, so copy off anything stored on it first; creating the media can erase its contents.

Decide between an in-place repair and a reinstall

Option When it fits Data and licensing considerations USB requirement
In-place repair using installation media Windows still starts and setup offers a repair or keep-files path. Back up personal files first and read the setup screen that states what will be retained. Use the same Windows edition and a legitimately activated installation; exact eligibility depends on the device and edition. Not always required if media can be mounted locally, but the official USB creation route needs a blank drive of at least 8 GB.
Clean reinstall The existing installation is unusable or an in-place path is not offered. Back up everything. A clean reinstall removes the existing Windows installation and applications. Confirm activation and edition details before proceeding. Required for the USB installation route; use a blank drive of at least 8 GB.

Use installation media only after the service, troubleshooter, cache, and component-reset steps have been attempted, unless Windows cannot boot or you have another urgent recovery reason. Keep the PC connected to reliable power, verify backups, and follow the setup screen’s retention and partition choices carefully. A USB drive does not itself repair 0x80070422; it only carries the official recovery or installation environment.

Which repair should you choose?

Repair Effort Reversibility and risk Best use
Enable Windows Update in Services Low; a few clicks and a restart. Highly reversible: return the startup setting to its previous value if necessary. Low risk when changing only Windows Update. The first response to 0x80070422 because the code specifically indicates a disabled or stopped service.
Windows Update troubleshooter Low; guided diagnostic. Generally reversible, although it may apply suggested repairs automatically. When the service setting looks correct or you want Windows to diagnose related update components.
Clear SoftwareDistribution contents Moderate; requires stopping and restarting the service. Cached update files are rebuilt, but any in-progress cached download is discarded. When the service runs but cached update data may be corrupted.
Component reset commands High; elevated command-line work and exact paths. More opportunity for command errors. Renaming folders preserves a rollback reference. When the cache reset and troubleshooter do not restore updating.
Installation media Highest; backup, media creation, and setup decisions. In-place and clean-install outcomes differ; a clean reinstall removes applications and existing Windows data. Recovery when normal Windows servicing remains unusable.

After Windows Update works again

  • Run Check for updates again until Windows reports that the device is up to date or presents a clear new error.
  • Restart once more if Windows requests it, then verify that Windows Update still shows Startup type: Automatic.
  • If you renamed the update folders, leave the old folders in place until the system has completed a successful update cycle and you are confident no rollback is needed.
  • For Windows 10, make a support-lifecycle decision: support ended on October 14, 2025, so an eligible Windows 11 migration may be more appropriate than continuing to repair an unsupported installation.

As an optional shortcut after trying the manual fixes, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements, invalid redirects, and shared DLL files; it can also tune settings, clear temporary and cache files, provide privacy and vulnerability checks, and offer tools such as real-time boost, file shredding, and crash logging. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7, with a category-based free trial of at least two days followed by a subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it; results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.

Key takeaway

For Windows Update error 0x80070422, start in services.msc: set Windows Update to Automatic, start it, restart, and check for updates. Use the edition-specific troubleshooter next, then clear SoftwareDistribution and reset update components only when necessary. If those steps fail, protect your data and use official installation media as a recovery option, remembering that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025.
