Windows Update error 0x80070422 means the Windows Update service is disabled, stopped, or otherwise not running. The safest first fix is to enable that service in services.msc, start it, restart Windows, and check for updates again. If that does not work, run the Windows Update troubleshooter and reset the update cache before considering an upgrade or repair path.
What Windows Update error 0x80070422 means
The hexadecimal code is commonly mistyped as “8×80070422”; the Windows code is 0x80070422. Microsoft maps it to ERROR_SERVICE_DISABLED. In practical terms, Windows Update cannot perform its work because its service is disabled, stopped, or unable to remain running.

Microsoft describes the condition as “Windows Update service is disabled or stopped” and, in its Windows Client guidance, says the issue occurs when the service stops working or is not running. A related message may read, “The service cannot be started because it is disabled.” This is normally a service-configuration problem, not proof that Windows is infected or that your files are damaged.
The code can appear when you select Check for updates, while Windows is attempting an automatic update, or during an upgrade. The same first-line repair applies whether the update is a routine quality update, a feature update, or an update for another Microsoft component that uses Windows Update.

Check these conditions before changing anything
- Use an administrator account. Changing a Windows service requires administrative permission. If Windows displays a User Account Control prompt, choose Yes only if you initiated the action.
- Confirm the symptom. Open Settings > Windows Update (or Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update on older Windows 10 builds) and select Check for updates. Note the exact code and any accompanying text.
- Save open work. The repair ends with a restart. Close applications and save documents before you begin.
- Check your Windows version. Press
Win + R, typewinver, and press Enter. Version matters because Windows 10 reached the end of Microsoft support on October 14, 2025.
Fix 0x80070422 by enabling Windows Update
This is Microsoft’s first-line procedure and changes only the Windows Update service setting.
- Press
Win + Rto open the Run dialog. - Type
services.mscand press Enter. Approve the administrator prompt if one appears. - In the Services list, locate Windows Update. The list is alphabetical; selecting the list and typing “Windows Update” can jump to it.
- Double-click Windows Update to open its Properties window.
- On the General tab, open Startup type and select Automatic.
- Look at Service status. If it says Stopped, select Start. If it is already running, leave it running after changing the startup type.
- Select Apply, then OK to close the Properties window.
- Restart the PC.
- After Windows starts, open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
Expected result: Windows Update should begin checking rather than immediately returning 0x80070422. A first check can take several minutes, especially after a service has been disabled for a long time.
If the service will not start
The Startup type menu is locked or changes do not stick
A locked control or a setting that reverts usually means your account lacks administrator rights, a policy controls the service, or security software is managing update behavior. Sign in with an administrator account and repeat the procedure. On a work or school computer, contact the organization’s administrator before changing policy-controlled services; forcing a setting can conflict with its update management.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWindows Update is missing from the list
If Windows Update is not present in Services, do not download a replacement service file from an unverified website. Record the Windows edition and version shown by winver, restart once, and use Microsoft’s official support and upgrade-installation guidance. A missing service can indicate a damaged Windows installation or an unusual system image that needs repair rather than a simple startup change.
The service starts and then stops
Return to the Windows Update Properties window and verify that Startup type remains Automatic. Restart Windows and try again. If the service repeatedly stops, proceed to the troubleshooter and cache-reset steps below rather than repeatedly clicking Start.
Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
When enabling the service does not clear the code, use the built-in Windows Update troubleshooter. Its location differs by Windows release:
- Windows 11: open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, find Windows Update, and select Run.
- Windows 10: open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, select Windows Update, and choose Run the troubleshooter.
Follow the prompts, allow the troubleshooter to apply a recommended change, and restart if it requests one. Then return to Windows Update and select Check for updates. The troubleshooter can identify service and update-component conditions that are not obvious in the Services console; it does not guarantee that every installation problem will be repaired.
Reset the Windows Update download cache
A damaged or incomplete update download can keep producing a service-related error after the service itself has been enabled. Microsoft’s support procedure uses a controlled cache reset: stop Windows Update, clear the contents of its download cache, restart the service, and try the update again.
- Open
services.mscwithWin + R. - Find Windows Update, open its Properties, and select Stop. Select Apply if required, but leave the Services window open.
- Open File Explorer and enter
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionin the address bar. - Delete the contents of the
SoftwareDistributionfolder, including files and subfolders. Do not delete theSoftwareDistributionfolder itself. If Windows says a file is in use, return to Services and confirm that Windows Update is stopped. - Return to the Windows Update Properties window and select Start. Confirm that Startup type is still Automatic, then select Apply and OK.
- Restart the PC.
- Open Windows Update and select Check for updates.
Clearing this folder removes locally cached update downloads; it does not remove your personal documents. Windows may need to download update files again, so the next check can take longer and use additional bandwidth.
What to do when the cache reset fails
Use Microsoft’s component-reset and upgrade guidance
Microsoft’s upgrade-error guidance for 0x80070422 recommends enabling Windows Update, starting it manually, and resetting Windows Update components. If the service and cache procedures above fail, follow the current component-reset instructions in Microsoft Support for your exact Windows version rather than copying commands from an unrelated forum. Component resets can affect update databases and require administrator access, so read each step and restart when instructed.

Separate a service error from an unsupported operating system
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says that after that date it no longer provides free software updates through Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. A Windows 10 PC continues to start and run, but a service repair cannot create new updates that Microsoft no longer supplies. If your computer is still on Windows 10 in 2026, check whether it meets Windows 11 requirements and review Microsoft’s supported upgrade or installation options.

| Option | What it changes | Administrator access | Data risk | Reversibility | Use it when |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Enable and start Windows Update | Only the service startup setting and current service state | Yes | Very low; no personal files are touched | High; the startup setting can be changed again | The code first appears or the service is disabled/stopped |
| Windows Update troubleshooter | Applies detected service and update fixes | Usually required | Low; review proposed changes | Generally high, although an applied setting may need manual reversal | The service is enabled but Windows Update still fails |
| SoftwareDistribution cache reset | Stops the service and removes cached update downloads | Yes | Low; downloads are removed, personal documents are not | High; Windows recreates the cache | A stale or incomplete download may be involved |
| Component reset | Broader Windows Update databases and components | Yes | Higher operational risk than a cache reset; follow Microsoft’s exact sequence | Less immediate; reversal is not a single switch | The first three options fail |

Common situations and the correct response
0x80070422 appears immediately after a new Windows installation
Open Services before trying repeated update checks. New installations can have Windows Update set to a non-running state until initial configuration completes. Set the service to Automatic, start it, restart Windows, and run the troubleshooter if necessary.
The error returns after every restart
Check the service’s Startup type after restarting. If it has changed back to Disabled or Manual, a policy, management tool, or security product may be enforcing that setting. On a managed PC, ask the administrator to correct the update policy. On a personal PC, complete the cache reset and Microsoft component-reset guidance before considering an installation repair.
Other services show errors too
If several Windows services fail to start, the problem may extend beyond Windows Update. Avoid downloading a generic “service repair” utility. Record the exact service names and messages, run the built-in troubleshooter, and use Microsoft’s support and upgrade-installation guidance for the installed Windows version.

That is no longer necessarily a 0x80070422 service problem. Read the new error code, confirm that the update applies to your Windows edition, and check whether a restart is pending. Do not keep deleting the cache when the service is running and Windows reports a different code; use the troubleshooting path for that code instead.
When to stop troubleshooting manually
Move to Microsoft’s official support or upgrade-installation guidance when any of these conditions applies:
- Windows Update is absent from
services.msc. - The service cannot be started even with an administrator account and the Startup type remains Automatic.
- The troubleshooter and cache reset both fail, and the code returns after a restart.
- Windows reports additional installation or system-file errors.
- You are using Windows 10 after October 14, 2025 and are seeking updates that are no longer supplied for that release.
Back up important files before any upgrade or reinstall operation. Use installation media only when the applicable Microsoft instructions specify it, and verify the Windows edition and license before changing the installation.

For Windows Update error 0x80070422, open services.msc, set Windows Update to Automatic, start it, apply the change, restart, and check for updates. If that does not resolve the code, run the Windows Update troubleshooter and reset the contents of C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution. Persistent failures require Microsoft’s component-reset or upgrade guidance, and Windows 10’s end-of-support date must be taken into account.
