Windows Update error 0x80070422 means the Windows Update service is disabled, stopped, or not running. The title 0X800704022 contains an extra zero; Microsoft documents the Windows error as 0x80070422, also classified as ERROR_SERVICE_DISABLED. Start by changing the Windows Update service to Automatic in Services, start it, restart the computer, and check for updates. If the message remains, reset the update files in C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution.

Confirm the code before changing anything

Look at the complete message in Windows Update and verify that it is 0x80070422. Windows error codes are easy to mistype because they contain both letters and numbers. The documented code has eight hexadecimal characters after “0x”: 80070422. If your screen shows a different code, use that exact code when choosing a repair; the procedure below is specifically for 0x80070422.

Microsoft Support describes 0x80070422 as “Windows Update service is disabled or stopped.” Microsoft Learn maps it to ERROR_SERVICE_DISABLED and explains that it appears when the service stops working or is not running. That makes this primarily a service-state problem, not evidence by itself of malware, a damaged download, or a hardware failure.

What the error changes—and what it does not

Question Answer for 0x80070422
Which Windows component is involved? The Windows Update service, the background service that Windows uses to check for and install updates.
What state causes the message? The service is disabled, stopped, or otherwise not running when Windows Update needs it.
What is the first repair? Open Services, set Windows Update to Automatic, start it if necessary, then apply the change.
What is the next repair? Reset the update components by stopping Windows Update, clearing the files in C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution, and starting the service again.
Does the code prove a virus infection? No. The code identifies a disabled or stopped update service; it does not identify the cause of that service state.

Prepare for the repair

The service change and component reset require an account that can make administrative changes. Save open work before restarting. Keep the computer connected to power, particularly if it is a laptop, and use a stable internet connection when you test Windows Update afterward.

  • Write down the exact code and any accompanying text.
  • Confirm that you are working on the affected Windows installation rather than a second boot or virtual machine.
  • Close Settings, the Microsoft Store, and other installers before resetting update files.
  • Do not delete unrelated folders under C:Windows; the reset procedure concerns the SoftwareDistribution folder only.

The first method changes only the Windows Update service state. If it works, there is no reason to reset cached files. Use the second method only when the service is running but the same error continues, or when the update cache itself needs to be rebuilt.

Fix 0x80070422 in Services

1. Open the Services console

  1. Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog.
  2. Type services.msc exactly, then press Enter.
  3. If Windows displays a permission prompt, approve it with an administrator account.

The Services window lists Windows background services alphabetically. The list may take a moment to populate on an older or busy system.

2. Set Windows Update to Automatic

  1. Scroll to Windows Update. Select it rather than a similarly named service.
  2. Right-click Windows Update and choose Properties. You can also double-click the entry.
  3. On the General tab, locate Startup type.
  4. Choose Automatic from the drop-down list.
  5. Check Service status. If it says Stopped, click Start.
  6. Click Apply, then OK.

Setting the startup type controls what happens when Windows starts; clicking Start changes the service immediately. You need both settings for this repair: Automatic prevents the service from remaining disabled at startup, while Start makes it available for the current update check.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Restart and test Windows Update

  1. Close the Services window.
  2. Restart the computer from Start > Power > Restart.
  3. After signing in, open Settings.
  4. Open the Windows Update page for your edition of Windows and choose Check for updates (the wording can vary slightly by Windows version).

If Windows begins checking or downloading updates without showing 0x80070422, the disabled-service condition has been corrected. Allow the update operation to finish and restart when Windows requests it. If the same code returns, continue with the component reset rather than repeatedly toggling the service.

Reset Windows Update components

Microsoft’s troubleshooting sequence for this error includes stopping Windows Update, clearing files under C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution, and starting Windows Update again. The folder stores update working files. Clearing its contents gives Windows a clean working set the next time it checks for updates; it does not uninstall Windows itself.

1. Stop Windows Update before clearing its files

  1. Open the Run dialog with Windows key + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Find Windows Update, open Properties, and click Stop.
  3. Wait for the service status to show Stopped, then leave the Services window open or close it.

Stopping the service first matters. If it is still using a file, Windows may refuse to clear that file or recreate it while you are working.

2. Clear the SoftwareDistribution files

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Enter C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution in the address bar and press Enter.
  3. Select the files and folders inside SoftwareDistribution. Do not select the parent C:Windows folder.
  4. Delete the selected contents. If Windows asks for administrator approval, approve it.
  5. If a file is reported as in use, return to Services and confirm that Windows Update is stopped before trying again.

Only clear the contents that Windows permits you to remove. A locked file indicates that a process still has it open; it is safer to stop the service and retry than to force-delete unrelated system files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Start the service again

  1. Return to services.msc.
  2. Open Windows Update properties.
  3. Set Startup type to Automatic if it is not already selected.
  4. Click Start, then Apply and OK.
  5. Restart Windows.

On the next start, Windows recreates the working files it needs as it checks for updates. Open Settings and select Check for updates again. The first check after a reset can take longer because the local update files have been cleared.

If the service still will not start

Use the service status as the decision point rather than repeating the same update check. Open services.msc and inspect Windows Update:

  • Startup type is Disabled: open Properties, change it to Automatic, click Apply, then Start.
  • Startup type is Automatic but status is Stopped: click Start. If it starts, restart Windows and test again.
  • Start is unavailable or Windows immediately stops the service: repeat the component reset carefully, making sure the service is stopped before clearing C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution. If it still cannot remain running, record the exact message Windows displays; that is a different failure from the basic disabled-service condition.
  • The service appears to run but the code returns: restart once more, then perform the SoftwareDistribution reset if you have not already done so.

Do not change the startup type of other services at random. The documented repair for this code concerns Windows Update itself. Changing unrelated services can create new startup or application problems without addressing 0x80070422.

Use the operating-system date when judging update results

Windows 10 has an important lifecycle limitation. Microsoft states that support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. Therefore, a successful service repair does not guarantee that a Windows 10 installation will continue receiving the same updates it received while the operating system was supported.

This distinction helps separate two outcomes:

  • If Windows 10 shows 0x80070422 and the Windows Update service is stopped, the Services and SoftwareDistribution procedures address the service condition.
  • If the service runs normally but Windows 10 does not offer new updates after the end-of-support date, the absence of an update may reflect lifecycle status rather than a remaining service error.

On Windows 11, Windows 8, or Windows 7, availability and support depend on the specific edition and Microsoft’s current servicing policy. The service repair remains the same, but the updates offered to an installation are governed by whether that edition is still within Microsoft support.

Choose the appropriate remedy

Remedy Changes service state? Resets cached update files? Administrator access needed? When to use it
Services: set Automatic and Start Yes No Usually yes First response to 0x80070422 when Windows Update is disabled or stopped.
SoftwareDistribution reset Yes; stop and then restart Windows Update Yes Yes When the service repair alone does not clear the error or the update working files need rebuilding.
Check support status No No No When the service runs but an older Windows installation no longer receives updates.

The table is a sequence, not a list of unrelated fixes: start with the service-state change, test, then reset the update components only if necessary. Checking the operating system’s support status prevents you from treating an expected end-of-support limitation as a repair failure.

Common mistakes to avoid

Confusing 0x80070422 with 0X800704022

The extra zero in the longer spelling can lead you to search for a different error. Confirm the code shown by Windows before applying instructions. The documented Windows Update code is 0x80070422.

Changing the startup type but not starting the service

Choosing Automatic affects future starts; it does not necessarily launch a service that is currently stopped. Click Start, then apply the change and restart Windows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Clearing the cache while Windows Update is running

Stop Windows Update before opening C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution. Otherwise files may be locked or immediately recreated, leaving the reset incomplete.

Deleting the wrong folder

The reset targets the contents of SoftwareDistribution. Do not delete other folders in C:Windows, and do not remove the parent Windows directory.

Assuming every missing update is this error

0x80070422 specifically identifies a disabled or stopped Windows Update service. If the service is running and the code is gone, an update that is not offered may have another explanation, including the support status of the operating system.

When the repair is complete

Consider the repair successful when Windows Update can check for updates without returning 0x80070422 and the Windows Update service remains set to Automatic and running after a restart. If the error returns, record whether the service was disabled again, stopped, or running; that observation determines whether to repeat the service-state repair or the component reset. Keep the exact code with your notes so any later support request refers to the documented error rather than the mistyped title.
