Windows error 0x80070422 usually means the Windows Update service is disabled or stopped. The first fix is built into Windows: open services.msc, set Windows Update to Automatic, start it if necessary, and try updating again. If that fails, run the Windows Update Troubleshooter and then reset the update cache in C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution. The same service problem can also surface when Microsoft Store or Xbox tries to install or update content.
What error 0x80070422 means
Microsoft Support describes 0x80070422 as the condition where the “Windows update service is disabled or stopped.” Microsoft Learn maps the code to ERROR_SERVICE_DISABLED and explains that it occurs when the Windows Update service has stopped working or is not running.

Windows Update is the component that contacts Microsoft, downloads update files, and hands them to the servicing system for installation. When its service is disabled, an update check cannot begin normally. A Store or Xbox installation may show the same code when it relies on update-related services that are unavailable; the code does not by itself prove that the Store or Xbox application is damaged.

Check your Windows version before troubleshooting
The expected result depends on whether the computer is running Windows 10 or Windows 11. Press Win+R, enter winver, and press Enter to see the edition and version.
Microsoft says that after October 14, 2025, it no longer provides free software updates through Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. That policy date matters in 2026: a Windows 10 machine can have a correctly running service and still not receive the same updates as a supported Windows 11 installation. A persistent error on Windows 10 should therefore be separated into two questions: can the service run, and is the operating system still eligible for the update being requested?
Fix 0x80070422 by enabling Windows Update
This is the lowest-risk and most reversible remedy. It changes one service setting and does not remove downloaded files.

- Sign in with an account that has administrator rights, if Windows asks for elevation.
- Press Win+R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. - In the Services window, scroll to Windows Update. You can click the list and type
Windows Updateto jump to it. - Double-click Windows Update to open its properties.
- Open the Startup type menu and choose Automatic.
- Look at Service status. If it says Stopped, click Start. If it is already running, leave it running.
- Click Apply, then OK.
- Open Settings and run Windows Update again. On Windows 11, go to Settings > Windows Update. On Windows 10, go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
If the Start button is unavailable, the service may be controlled by policy, a damaged service configuration, or a dependency that is not running. Do not randomly change other services; continue with the troubleshooter and the checks below.
Run the built-in Windows Update Troubleshooter
Microsoft’s Windows Update Troubleshooter is designed to look for common conditions behind error codes encountered while downloading and installing updates. It can repair or recommend changes without requiring a third-party download.
Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Select System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run.
- Allow the checks to finish and follow any on-screen action.
- Restart the computer if Windows requests it, then return to Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
Windows 10
- Open Settings.
- Select Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
- Select Windows Update, choose Run the troubleshooter, and complete the prompts.
- Restart if prompted and try Windows Update again.
The troubleshooter is an escalation after the service check, not a replacement for confirming that Windows Update is enabled. If it reports that it could not identify the problem, proceed to the cache reset.
Reset the SoftwareDistribution update cache
A damaged or incomplete download in the update cache can keep a correctly configured service from completing an update. Microsoft documents stopping Windows Update, deleting the contents of C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution, and starting Windows Update again.

- Press Win+R, enter
services.msc, and press Enter. - Double-click Windows Update and choose Stop. Wait until the status changes to stopped.
- Open File Explorer and enter
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionin the address bar. - Select the items inside that folder and delete them. Delete the contents, not the
SoftwareDistributionfolder itself. Windows will recreate required cache content. - Return to Services, open Windows Update, choose Start, and confirm that Startup type remains Automatic.
- Restart the computer and run Check for updates.
Some files may be in use if the service did not stop completely. If Windows refuses to delete an item, close the Services and File Explorer windows, restart the computer, stop Windows Update again, and retry. Do not force-delete unrelated folders under C:Windows.
Command-line alternative
Administrators who prefer a terminal can perform the same stop-and-start operation from an elevated Command Prompt:

- Open Start, type
Command Prompt, right-click it, and select Run as administrator. - Run
net stop wuauservand wait for confirmation that the Windows Update service has stopped. - Use File Explorer to delete the contents of
C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution. - Return to the elevated Command Prompt and run
net start wuauserv. - Restart Windows, then check for updates.
If a command reports that the service is not started or cannot be stopped, use the Services window to inspect its status. The cache reset should not be attempted while Windows Update is actively downloading or installing an update.
When 0x80070422 appears in Microsoft Store or Xbox
Seeing the code outside the Windows Update page does not change the first diagnostic step. Store and Xbox updates can depend on Windows servicing components, so a disabled Windows Update service can block an app or game installation even when the Windows Update page was not the screen that displayed the error.
- Enable and start Windows Update using the Services procedure above.
- Restart Windows so the service state is refreshed.
- Open Microsoft Store or the Xbox app and retry the download or update.
- If Windows Update itself still reports 0x80070422, run the Windows Update Troubleshooter before investigating the individual app.
Do not assume that reinstalling the Store or Xbox app will repair a stopped Windows service. Fix the shared Windows component first; only then is an app-specific problem worth isolating.

Compare the remedies before choosing the next step
| Remedy | Risk | Scope | Reversibility | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Enable or start Windows Update in Services | Low; changes one service setting | Single Windows Update service | High; the startup type can be changed back | First response to 0x80070422 |
| Windows Update Troubleshooter | Low; uses Windows’ supported diagnostic workflow | Common update configuration and download/install conditions | Generally high; follow the reported recommendations | When the service is running but updates still fail |
| Delete SoftwareDistribution contents | Moderate; removes cached update downloads | Update cache and downloaded metadata, not personal files | Windows recreates needed cache files, but downloads must be obtained again | When the cache may be corrupt or incomplete |
| Continue retrying on unsupported Windows 10 | No repair benefit; policy limits remain | Operating-system lifecycle rather than one service | Not applicable | After checking version and support status |
Diagnose the result after each attempt
The service starts and updates install
No further repair is needed. Keep the startup type at Automatic so Windows can check for updates normally.
The service starts but immediately stops
Record the exact message shown in Services and run the Windows Update Troubleshooter. A service that will not remain running is different from one that was merely set to Manual or Disabled. Avoid changing registry entries or deleting additional system folders without a specific, supported procedure.
The cache reset completes but the code returns
Run the troubleshooter once more, verify the computer’s date and time, and confirm that the network connection is working. If the machine is Windows 10, check whether the requested update is compatible with its post-October 14, 2025 support status. The lifecycle limitation cannot be repaired by clearing a cache.
Only Microsoft Store or Xbox fails
First confirm that Windows Update itself can check for updates. If it can, note the Store or Xbox error text and use that application’s own repair options; 0x80070422 alone does not identify which app component is at fault.
The computer is managed by an organization
Workplace or school policies can intentionally disable update services or control when updates are installed. If the Startup type is locked or changes back after a restart, contact the administrator rather than overriding the policy.
Quick Recap
What not to do
- Do not download a random “0x80070422 fixer” from a forum. The first repair is already included in Windows.
- Do not delete the entire
C:Windowsdirectory or theSoftwareDistributionfolder itself; remove only the cache contents after stopping Windows Update. - Do not disable security software permanently to test an update. If security software is suspected, use its documented temporary troubleshooting mode and restore protection immediately.
- Do not treat a successful service start as proof that Windows 10 will receive updates after its support end date.
- Do not repeatedly interrupt an update while installation is in progress; allow Windows to finish or roll back normally.
