Windows Update error 0x80070422 means the Windows Update service is disabled or stopped. The first repair is to open Services, set Windows Update to Automatic, start it, restart Windows, and check for updates again. The code is documented as 0x80070422; if your screen shows 0X800704022, it contains an extra final 2, so verify the exact message before troubleshooting.
If starting the service does not clear the error, reset the Windows Update cache, run the built-in troubleshooter, or reset Windows Update components for an upgrade or installation that still fails.

What error 0x80070422 means
Microsoft documents 0x80070422 as the condition in which the Windows Update service is disabled or stopped. Microsoft Learn maps the same value to ERROR_SERVICE_DISABLED and describes it as the Windows Update service having stopped working or not running.
This is a Windows servicing problem, not a product name. The code does not, by itself, explain why the service is disabled, and it is not a diagnosis of malware. It tells you which Windows component must be available before update checks, downloads, or installations can proceed.

Check the spelling of the code
The documented hexadecimal code is 0x80070422. The title string 0X800704022 has one extra trailing 2. Case does not matter for the x, but an additional digit changes the value. If the longer value is copied from a dialog, search for the complete wording of that dialog as well; the repair below applies when the underlying message says Windows Update is disabled or stopped.
Before changing anything
- Save open work and close programs that are installing or updating.
- Record the exact code and message. This helps distinguish the documented Windows Update condition from a different error that only looks similar.
- Use an account permitted to change Windows services. If the Properties window does not allow changes, sign in with an administrator account or ask the device administrator to perform the steps.
- Do not delete the Windows Update service itself. The repair changes its startup setting and running state.
Primary fix: enable and start Windows Update
This is Microsoft’s least-invasive first step. It changes the Windows Update service from disabled or stopped to an enabled, running state without resetting update data.
- Press Win + R to open the Run dialog.
- Type
services.msc, then press Enter. Windows opens the Services management console. - Scroll through the list and locate Windows Update. Select the entry whose service name is exactly Windows Update.
- Right-click Windows Update and choose Properties.
- In the Startup type menu, choose Automatic.
- Look at Service status. If it says Stopped, click Start.
- Click Apply, then OK to save the setting and close Properties.
- Close the Services window and restart the PC.
- After Windows starts again, open Windows Update and choose Check for updates.
What a successful repair looks like
The Windows Update entry should remain set to Automatic, and its status should be running when you inspect it again. Windows Update should then proceed to checking for available updates instead of immediately reporting that the service is disabled or stopped.

If the Start button is unavailable
If Start is unavailable, the service may already be running. In that case, confirm that Startup type is not Disabled, select Automatic, apply the change, restart Windows, and test Windows Update again.
If Windows immediately changes the setting back or shows an error when you click Start, note the exact message. Do not repeatedly force the service; continue with the cache and troubleshooting steps below.

Reset the Windows Update cache
Use this follow-up when the service is enabled and running but Windows Update still fails. Microsoft Support documents clearing the contents of the Windows Update cache directory, then starting the service again.

- Open the Services console with Win + R, enter
services.msc, and press Enter. - Find Windows Update, open Properties, and click Stop if the service is running.
- Open File Explorer and go to
C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution. - Delete the files and folders inside
SoftwareDistribution. Leave theSoftwareDistributionfolder itself in place. - Return to Services, open Windows Update again, and click Start.
- Click Apply, then OK, restart the PC, and run Check for updates.
Why this is a separate step
The service-start repair changes whether Windows Update can run. Clearing SoftwareDistribution addresses cached update data after the service is available. It is therefore a follow-up, not a replacement for setting the service to Automatic.
If files will not delete
Windows may still be using a file if Windows Update did not stop completely. Return to Services and verify that Windows Update shows Stopped before trying again. If the service cannot be stopped, restart Windows, open Services before starting another update check, and repeat the documented sequence.
Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
Windows includes a troubleshooter that can inspect update-related settings and apply available repairs. Use it after confirming that the service is enabled, or when you want Windows to check the configuration for you.
- Open Settings.
- Go to System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run.
- Follow the onscreen instructions, allow any recommended repair, and restart if Windows requests it.
- Return to Windows Update and select Check for updates.
The exact path is available on Windows versions that expose the current Settings layout. If your edition uses a different Settings arrangement, search Settings for troubleshoot and open the Windows Update troubleshooter from the results.
Reset Windows Update components for upgrade or installation failures
For an upgrade or installation that continues to fail, Microsoft recommends enabling Windows Update, starting it manually, and resetting Windows Update components. Component reset is broader than changing one service setting or clearing its cache, so use it after the primary repair and cache reset have not resolved the problem.

Use the documented order
- Open
services.mscand confirm that Windows Update is set to Automatic. - Start the service manually if it is stopped.
- Apply the Windows Update component-reset procedure recommended by Microsoft for your upgrade or installation case.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the upgrade, installation, or Check for updates operation again.
Component reset instructions can differ by Windows version and by whether the failure occurs during a normal update check or an upgrade installation. Follow the procedure for the specific Windows release shown on the Microsoft support page rather than mixing steps from unrelated guides.

These options are not equivalent. Start with the smallest change that matches the symptom, then move to the broader repair only if the earlier step fails.
| Repair | Best use | Relative risk | Time and effort | What it changes |

| Enable and start Windows Update | The code appears and the service is disabled or stopped | Lowest | Short, direct Services change | Startup type and running state of one service |

The service runs but update checks still fail | Low | Moderate; requires stopping and restarting the service | Cached Windows Update files and folders |
| Windows Update troubleshooter | You want Windows to inspect and repair update settings | Low | Short guided check | Settings identified by the troubleshooter |
| Reset Windows Update components | An upgrade or installation still fails after the service and cache steps | Broader | Longer, version-specific procedure | Multiple Windows Update components rather than one service |
Microsoft does not publish a success-rate statistic for these repairs. The table is a sequence of increasing scope, not a promise that any one step will work on every PC.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWindows 10 support and upgrade context
Microsoft’s upgrade-installation guidance states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Whether that affects you depends on the Windows version installed on the device and the support channel that applies to it.
That lifecycle date does not change what 0x80070422 means: a disabled or stopped Windows Update service can still prevent the update process from starting. It does affect which updates or upgrade paths are available after the service is repaired. If the service starts but an upgrade remains unavailable, verify that the device’s Windows edition and support status permit the intended upgrade.
When the error returns after a restart
If the code reappears after you set the service to Automatic, start it, and restart Windows, work through the following branch:
Quick Recap
- Open Services and check whether Windows Update is still Automatic. If it has reverted to Disabled, record that behavior before changing it again.
- If the setting is still Automatic and the service is running, clear the
SoftwareDistributioncontents using the documented stop-delete-start sequence. - Run the Windows Update troubleshooter from Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Windows Update where that path is available.
- For an upgrade or installation failure, follow Microsoft’s Windows Update component-reset procedure for the affected Windows version.
- Restart and test Windows Update after each distinct repair. This makes it clear which change affected the result and avoids stacking several resets at once.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using the wrong code: The documented value is
0x80070422, not the title’s0X800704022with an extra final digit. - Changing only the status: Starting the service without changing a disabled startup type can leave the same failure after the next restart. Set Startup type to Automatic and then start the service.
- Deleting the wrong directory: Microsoft’s cache procedure targets the contents of
C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution. Do not remove the parent folder itself. - Skipping the restart: Restart Windows before testing again so the new service configuration is loaded cleanly.
- Jumping to a broad reset: Component reset is intended for persistent upgrade or installation failures. Try the single-service repair first.
- Assuming every similar message is this code: If the dialog shows a different hexadecimal value or a different service name, use that exact information instead of applying this guide blindly.
Final verification checklist
- The code shown by Windows is confirmed as
0x80070422, or the message clearly says Windows Update is disabled or stopped. - Windows Update is set to Automatic in
services.msc. - The service starts successfully.
- The PC has been restarted.
- Check for updates has been run after the restart.
- If the service fix was insufficient, the cache was cleared with the service stopped.
- The Windows Update troubleshooter was run where available.
- For an upgrade or installation failure, the appropriate Windows Update component-reset procedure was followed.
