Windows Update error 0x80070057 means the installer received an incorrect parameter. Microsoft also associates it with failed update installation caused by possibilities such as corrupted files, permission problems, or an incorrect system configuration. It is an error code, not a diagnosis of one specific component. Work through the fixes in order: run the Windows Update troubleshooter, restart and check again, repair system files with sfc /scannow, clear the update cache, check storage and the drive, then reset update components or install the matching package manually.
What error 0x80070057 means
Microsoft’s wording for this code is The parameter is incorrect.
During an update, a parameter is information supplied to an installer or update component. If that information is malformed, unavailable, inconsistent with the current Windows configuration, or attached to damaged update files, the process can stop with 0x80070057.

The code does not identify whether the problem is a damaged system file, a bad cached download, insufficient storage, a permissions issue, a disk problem, or an update package that does not apply to your Windows installation. That is why the safest approach is a staged escalation rather than one “magic” command. Start with reversible Microsoft tools, and move to cache and component repair only if the failure persists.

Before you start
- Save open work and connect the computer to reliable power. Several steps require a restart.
- Use an account with administrator rights for System File Checker, service changes, and component repair.
- Note whether you are running Windows 11 or Windows 10. The troubleshooting menus differ, and Windows 10 reached the end of Microsoft’s free updates, technical assistance, and security fixes on October 14, 2025.
- Keep the exact update name or error text available. It helps you identify the same package later in Microsoft Update Catalog if manual installation becomes necessary.
- Do not delete the Windows Update cache until you have stopped the Windows Update service. Removing files while the service is active can leave the cache in an inconsistent state.
Fix 0x80070057 in Microsoft’s recommended order
1. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
The troubleshooter performs the lowest-risk checks first and can correct common update configuration problems without requiring manual file deletion.

- Windows 11: Open Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run.
- Allow the checks and any offered repairs to finish. Read the result instead of closing the window immediately; it may identify a setting that needs attention.
- Restart Windows even if the troubleshooter reports that it made no changes.
- After the restart, open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
On Windows 10, use Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Windows Update > Run the troubleshooter. Restart when it finishes, then return to Windows Update and select Check for updates. If the same code appears, continue to the file-integrity check rather than repeatedly running the troubleshooter.
2. Repair protected system files with System File Checker
System File Checker (SFC) checks protected Windows files and repairs corruption it can identify. This targets a different failure point from the troubleshooter and is useful when the installer is encountering damaged operating-system files.
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- At the elevated prompt, enter exactly:
sfc /scannow- Press Enter and let the scan reach 100 percent. Do not close the window or restart while it is still running.
- When SFC reports its result, restart the computer.
- Open Windows Update and select Check for updates once more.
SFC’s result determines what to do next. If it repaired files, the restart is important because Windows Update must retry with those repaired files. If it reports that it found no integrity violations, the code is more likely to involve the update cache, storage, configuration, or package applicability; proceed to the next section. If it says that some files could not be repaired, do not treat the update error as solved—continue with cache and component troubleshooting.

3. Clear the Windows Update cache safely
Windows stores downloaded update data in the SoftwareDistribution folder. A damaged or incomplete cached download can cause another installation attempt to fail in the same way. Clearing the folder removes the cached contents so Windows can build a fresh cache; it does not remove your personal documents.
- Press Windows key + R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. - In the Services window, locate Windows Update.
- Right-click it and choose Stop. Wait until the service shows that it is stopped.
- Open File Explorer and go to
C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution. - Delete the contents inside
SoftwareDistribution. Leave the folder itself in place. If Windows says a file is in use, return to Services and confirm that Windows Update is stopped before trying again. - Return to
services.msc, right-click Windows Update, and choose Start. - Restart the computer, then use Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.
The first check after a cache reset may take longer because Windows has to download update data again. If the same package fails after a fresh download, the cache was not the only cause; move on instead of deleting the folder repeatedly.
4. Check free space and the drive
Microsoft specifically includes storage cleanup and hard-drive checks in its guidance for 0x80070057 during an upgrade. An update can fail when the system drive cannot hold temporary files, the expanded package, and the rollback data Windows may need.

- Open Settings > System > Storage on Windows 11, or open Settings > System > Storage on Windows 10.
- Review the available space on the drive that contains Windows. If it is nearly full, remove files you no longer need or use Windows Disk Cleanup to remove eligible temporary system files.
- Do not remove personal files just to reach an arbitrary target. Make enough room for the update and its temporary work, then retry the update.
- Check the drive for errors using the disk-checking option available in Windows. Allow the check to complete and follow any restart instruction it provides.
Devices with very small internal drives may need a USB flash drive as an installation or recovery aid when Windows cannot stage the required files locally. A USB drive is an optional media and storage workaround, not a guaranteed direct fix for 0x80070057. If the drive check reports a problem, resolve that storage issue before treating the update package as defective.

When the troubleshooter, SFC, cache reset, and storage checks do not resolve the failure, Microsoft recommends resetting the Windows Update components. A component reset rebuilds the update services and their working state rather than repairing only one downloaded file.
Use Microsoft’s current Windows Update component-reset procedure for your Windows release and follow it in an elevated Command Prompt. The procedure stops the relevant update services, resets their working folders and registrations, and starts the services again. Because the exact commands and service names can vary by Windows version, copy the sequence for your release rather than combining commands from unrelated guides.

- Open Command Prompt with Run as administrator.
- Run the reset sequence exactly as documented for your release, waiting for each command to finish.
- Restart Windows after the sequence completes.
- Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
Component reset is more invasive than running a troubleshooter or restarting, so record any custom update-service setting before changing it. If the reset produces a new error, keep that message; it can distinguish a service-permission problem from a package-applicability problem.
6. Install the update manually from Microsoft Update Catalog
Manual installation bypasses the normal Windows Update download path. It is appropriate when the same named update repeatedly fails through Settings but the package is otherwise applicable to your system.
- Identify the failed update’s knowledge-base number or complete package name in Settings > Windows Update > Update history.
- Open Microsoft Update Catalog and search for that exact identifier.
- Confirm the package matches your installed Windows release. A package for a different release can be rejected even when its title looks similar.
- Confirm the processor architecture shown for your installation before downloading. The package must match the architecture; an incompatible package is not a substitute for the correct one.
- Download the matching package and run the downloaded installer. Follow its prompts and allow a restart if requested.
- After restarting, open Update history to verify whether the package installed. Then select Check for updates so Windows can discover any remaining updates.
Microsoft’s escalation path also calls for installing the latest servicing stack update and repairing file corruption before attempting the matching catalog package. Treat those as prerequisites when Microsoft lists them for your release. If Catalog reports that the update is not applicable, stop rather than forcing it: recheck the Windows release, architecture, package number, and servicing prerequisites.

How to interpret the result
The troubleshooter reports a repair
Restart before testing. A repair is not confirmation that the pending update installed; it only means the troubleshooter changed or validated a setting. Use Check for updates after the restart and verify the result in Update history.
SFC repairs files but the code returns
That outcome means file corruption was present, but it was not the only blocker. Continue with the cache reset, then storage and drive checks. Do not run SFC continuously between every attempt; one completed scan followed by a restart provides the useful test.
The cache reset changes nothing
A fresh cache rules out some corrupted-download scenarios, but it cannot correct an unsupported package, a full or failing drive, or every permissions and configuration problem. Use the component-reset and manual-installation stages instead of repeating the same deletion.
Manual installation says the package is not applicable
Do not force the installation. Recheck the Windows edition and release, processor architecture, update identifier, and any servicing-stack requirement. If those details are correct, the package may already be installed, superseded, or intended for a different build. Windows Update history and the package’s Catalog description are the places to reconcile that mismatch.
Windows 10 and Windows 11 support context
Microsoft states that free Windows 10 updates, technical assistance, and security fixes ended on October 14, 2025, and recommends moving to Windows 11. A Windows 10 computer can therefore continue to show update failures in a support context that is different from a current Windows 11 installation. The troubleshooting steps above can still explain or repair a local installation problem, but they do not extend Windows 10 support or create new security servicing.
Windows 11 users should use the current Settings path for the Windows Update troubleshooter and the current Get Help troubleshooting experience when Windows directs them there. Labels can change between releases, so follow the wording shown on your installed version rather than an older screenshot.

When to stop troubleshooting locally
- Stop and preserve the exact message if SFC cannot repair files and the update still fails after a cache reset.
- Stop if a disk check reports hardware or file-system problems; continuing to write update data can make recovery harder.
- Do not install a package merely because its number is close to the failed update. Release and architecture matching are mandatory.
- If Windows repeatedly rolls back an update after restart, note the update identifier and the rollback message before attempting another manual installation.
- For Windows 10, include the October 14, 2025 support end date when deciding whether continued troubleshooting or a move to Windows 11 is the more appropriate path.
