How to Fix Windows Update Error 0x80070057 (The “Parameter Is Incorrect” Error)

Windows Update error 0x80070057 usually points to corrupted update files, permission problems, or an incorrect system configuration. The code is often typed as 0X800070057 with an extra zero; Microsoft’s Windows Update documentation uses 0x80070057. Start with the built-in Windows Update troubleshooter, then clear the update cache and run System File Checker if the error returns.

Back up important files before clearing the cache or repairing system files. The sequence below applies to Windows 11 and Windows 10, with an important support-status note for Windows 10.

Confirm that the code is 0x80070057

Check the message carefully before changing anything. The canonical Windows Update code is 0x80070057, not 0x800070057. The latter contains an additional zero and is most likely a typing or transcription error.

Microsoft describes this code in its upgrade and installation error table as “The parameter is incorrect.” In Windows Update guidance, the same code is associated broadly with corrupted files, permission issues, and incorrect system configurations. It is not a diagnosis of one failed component, so the practical fix is a staged sequence: use Windows’ diagnostic tool first, then rebuild the update cache and check protected system files.

  • Less chaos, more calm. The refreshed design of Windows 11 enables you to do what you want effortlessly.
  • Biometric logins. Encrypted authentication. And, of course, advanced antivirus defenses. Everything you need, plus more, to protect you against the latest cyberthreats.
  • Make the most of your screen space with snap layouts, desktops, and seamless redocking.

  • Stay in touch with friends and family with Microsoft Teams, which can be seamlessly integrated into your taskbar. (1)

The code can appear while downloading, preparing, or installing an update. The stage matters: a manually downloaded package can also fail when it does not match the installed Windows version, processor architecture, or prerequisite updates.

Prepare the PC before troubleshooting

Do these checks before running repair commands. They prevent an otherwise correct repair from failing because of a basic prerequisite.

  • Back up personal files. Copy important documents, photos, and other irreplaceable data to a USB drive or another trusted backup location. Cache repair normally targets update files, not personal documents, but a backup protects you if a later repair or upgrade is interrupted.
  • Connect power. Plug in a laptop or tablet. Do not begin a lengthy update or upgrade while the battery is nearly empty.
  • Use a stable internet connection. Windows Update must be able to download files and validate them with Microsoft’s servers. If possible, avoid an unstable or metered connection while retrying.
  • Sign in with an administrator account. Stopping the Windows Update service and running System File Checker require elevated permissions.
  • Set the clock automatically. In Settings, search for Date & time, turn on automatic time and automatic time-zone options, and select Sync now when that option is available. An incorrect clock can interfere with update validation.

Use the correct troubleshooter path

Windows edition Windows Update troubleshooter What to do afterward
Windows 11 Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters. Find Windows Update and select Run. Windows 11 may also offer the troubleshooter through the Get Help app. Allow the checks and suggested repairs to finish, restart the PC, then open Windows Update and select Check for updates.
Windows 10 Open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters. Select Windows Update, then Run the troubleshooter. Let it complete, restart, and select Check for updates in Windows Update.

Step 1: Run Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter

The troubleshooter is the safest first action because it checks common update-service and configuration problems without requiring you to remove files manually. Follow the Windows 11 or Windows 10 path in the table, accept any repair it proposes, and wait for the result instead of closing the window early.

  1. Open the appropriate troubleshooter.
  2. Let it inspect Windows Update and apply any recommended correction.
  3. Restart the computer, even if the troubleshooter reports that it made a repair.
  4. Return to Windows Update and choose Check for updates.

If the update installs, no further repair is necessary. If the same code appears again, continue with the checks below. A message that the troubleshooter could not identify a problem does not rule out a damaged download cache; it simply means you should proceed to the next stage.

Step 2: Recheck power, network, permissions, and time

Before changing the cache, repeat the basic checks while the failure is visible. Confirm that the device is plugged in, the connection is working, and the account has administrator rights. Open a browser and verify that ordinary websites load, but remember that browsing alone does not prove that every Microsoft update endpoint is reachable.

Open Settings and search for Date & time. Turn on automatic time and automatic time zone, then use Sync now. Retry Windows Update after the clock has synchronized. If the PC’s time repeatedly changes after a restart, correct that underlying clock problem first; otherwise update signatures and secure connections can continue to fail.

Step 3: Clear the Windows Update download cache

A damaged or incomplete download in the Windows Update cache can make every retry fail with the same parameter error. Microsoft’s repair sequence uses the SoftwareDistribution folder. You delete its contents, not the folder itself, after stopping the Windows Update service.

  1. Press Windows key + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. In the Services window, locate Windows Update.
  3. Right-click Windows Update and select Stop. Leave the Services window open.
  4. Open File Explorer and enter C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution in the address bar.
  5. Select the items inside that folder and delete them. Do not delete the SoftwareDistribution folder itself. If Windows says a file is in use, return to Services and confirm that Windows Update is stopped, then try again.
  6. Return to Services, right-click Windows Update, and select Start.
  7. Restart Windows, open Windows Update, and select Check for updates.

Deleting the contents removes cached update downloads and history data that Windows can recreate; it does not remove your personal files. If you receive an access-denied message, verify that you are using an administrator account and that the service is stopped. A restart followed by the same procedure can release a file that another Windows component still has open.

Step 4: Repair protected Windows files with SFC

Microsoft specifically recommends System File Checker for the 0x80070057 case. SFC examines protected Windows files and repairs corrupted copies when it can.

  1. Open Start and search for Command Prompt.
  2. Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  3. Type sfc /scannow and press Enter.
  4. Leave the window open until the scan reaches 100 percent and reports its result.
  5. Restart the computer, then run Windows Update again with Check for updates.

The command must be run in an elevated window; a normal Command Prompt may not have permission to repair protected files. Do not shut down the PC while the scan is running. If the error returns after a completed scan and restart, continue with the installation-compatibility checks rather than repeatedly running the same command.

Step 5: Retry carefully after a restart

Microsoft’s upgrade guidance recommends restarting before another installation attempt and closing unnecessary background applications. Restarting clears pending locks left by the previous attempt and gives the update service a clean session.

Security software can occasionally interfere with an installation. If you have evidence that your antivirus is blocking the update, temporarily disable it only for the installation test, restart or retry the update, and re-enable protection immediately afterward. This is a diagnostic step, not a recommendation to operate the PC without security protection. Antivirus software complements Windows Update troubleshooting; disabling it does not repair corrupted files or guarantee an installation.

Step 6: Check a manually downloaded update for compatibility

If you downloaded an update package yourself instead of using Windows Update, verify that it belongs to the installed Windows release and processor architecture. Microsoft Learn notes that a package must match the Windows version and architecture, and that prerequisite updates may need to be installed first.

Verify the Windows version

Open Settings and search for About or System information. Record the Windows edition and version shown there. Do not assume that a package for another release is interchangeable simply because both systems are called Windows 10 or Windows 11.

Verify the processor architecture

In the same system-information area, check whether the installation is 32-bit or 64-bit and use a package built for that architecture. A package for a different architecture can produce a parameter or applicability error even when the update number looks correct.

Check prerequisites

Read the package’s requirements and installation notes. If it lists a prerequisite update, install that prerequisite first and restart when requested. Retrying the main package without its prerequisite will not correct a compatibility mismatch.

Check free space when the failure occurs during an upgrade

Storage requirements differ between a full Windows upgrade and an ordinary cumulative update. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance says an upgrade needs at least 16 GB of free space for a 32-bit operating system or 20 GB for a 64-bit operating system. These figures apply to upgrades; they are not a guaranteed requirement for every routine Windows Update package.

To check space, open File Explorer, select This PC, and inspect the system drive, normally C:. If you are performing an upgrade and the available space is below the applicable figure, free space before retrying. Remove only files you recognize, and keep the personal-file backup made at the start. A low-space upgrade can fail before the update files are fully staged, so clearing the cache alone will not solve that condition.

Windows 10 support status in 2026

Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. The repair steps in this guide can still help an existing Windows 10 installation process a package it is entitled to receive, but they cannot restore free post-end-of-support updates.

If the PC is still running Windows 10, first identify whether the failed operation is an upgrade to a supported Windows release, an update covered by an organization’s arrangement, or an older package that remains applicable to that installation. Do not interpret the absence of a new update after October 14, 2025 as proof that the cache is corrupted.

What to do when 0x80070057 still appears

Use the outcome of each stage to choose the next action rather than repeating every step indefinitely.

  • The troubleshooter repaired something, but the code returned: Restart once more, confirm automatic date and time, and clear the SoftwareDistribution contents before running sfc /scannow.
  • You cannot stop Windows Update: Confirm that Services is open with an administrator account. Restart Windows and try again before deleting any cache files.
  • Cache deletion is blocked: Stop Windows Update again, close File Explorer windows showing that folder, and retry. Never delete the parent C:Windows folder or unrelated system directories.
  • SFC will not run: Close the window, reopen Command Prompt with Run as administrator, and enter the command exactly as sfc /scannow.
  • A manually downloaded package says it is not applicable: Recheck the Windows version, processor architecture, and prerequisite updates. Installing a different package at random can create additional servicing problems.
  • An upgrade stops because of storage: Confirm whether the system is 32-bit or 64-bit and compare free space with the 16 GB or 20 GB upgrade guidance. That threshold is for an upgrade, not every cumulative update.
  • The PC is on Windows 10 after its support end date: Determine whether the operation is an upgrade to a supported release or an update that your organization otherwise provides. Free consumer Windows Update support ended on October 14, 2025.

If the code persists after the troubleshooter, cache reset, SFC scan, restart, and compatibility checks, record the exact update number, Windows version, architecture, and stage at which it fails. Those details distinguish a damaged local cache from a package that simply does not apply to the machine and make further support more effective.
