Windows Update error 0x80070057 usually points to corrupted update files, permission problems or an incorrect system configuration. The title’s 0X800070057 contains an extra zero; Microsoft documents the code as 0x80070057. Start with the Windows Update troubleshooter, restart and retry the update. If that fails, reset the update cache, check time and free space, repair protected files with SFC, and use DISM only with an appropriate repair source.

What error 0x80070057 means

Microsoft lists 0x80070057 among Windows Update installation failures. The code is not a diagnosis of one defective component; it is commonly associated with damaged update files, insufficient permissions or an incorrect Windows configuration. The same code can appear while Windows is downloading, preparing or installing an update, so the visible percentage or update name alone does not identify the cause.

Microsoft describes Windows Update as “an essential component of Windows 11, ensuring your system remains secure, stable, and up-to-date with the latest features.” Fixing the update process matters because repeatedly postponing an update can leave a device without later security and reliability fixes. Resolve the error in the least-invasive order below rather than deleting system folders at random or changing registry values.

Choose the least-invasive remedy first

Remedy What it changes Windows Update dependency When to use it
Windows Update troubleshooter Checks and applies supported automatic repairs; does not intentionally remove personal files Needs Windows settings and, on current builds, may offer the Get Help app First attempt for a new or unexplained failure
Restart and retry Clears transient processes and file locks None beyond the next update attempt Immediately after the troubleshooter or any pending restart
SoftwareDistribution cache reset Deletes downloaded update-cache contents; personal documents are outside this folder Windows Update must be stopped and started again When a damaged download or stale cache is suspected
sfc /scannow Checks protected Windows system files and repairs supported corruption Does not require the online DISM source When corruption or configuration damage remains possible
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth Repairs the Windows component image The /Online form obtains required files through Windows Update When SFC is insufficient and Windows Update can supply the repair files

Back up personal files before making changes. A USB flash drive can hold a local copy when another backup destination is unavailable, but the drive itself does not repair Windows Update.

Prepare before changing Windows

  • Back up important files. Copy documents, photos, browser exports and other irreplaceable data to a separate drive or your normal backup location. Microsoft advises a backup before troubleshooting.
  • Record the failure. Note the exact code, the update’s KB number if shown, your Windows edition and build, and whether the failure occurs during download, installation or restart. These details make later support more efficient.
  • Use an administrator account. Cache and system-file repairs require elevation. If Windows asks for administrator credentials, use an account authorized to make system changes.
  • Keep the computer connected to power and the network. Interrupting an update or a repair command can leave the operation incomplete.

1. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter

Windows 11

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
  3. Find Windows Update and select Run.
  4. Follow the checks and apply any repair Windows offers. Current Windows 11 builds may also open the Get Help app for guided diagnostics.
  5. When it finishes, restart the computer even if no repair is reported.

Windows 10

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Choose Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
  3. Select Windows Update > Run the troubleshooter and apply the recommended actions.
  4. Restart, then select Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Check for updates.

The troubleshooter is a safe first step because it can identify common service, configuration and update-database problems without requiring manual deletion. If the same code returns, continue rather than repeatedly running the tool.

2. Restart and try the update again

Select Start > Power > Restart, wait for Windows to load completely, and then run Windows Update again. A restart can release a process or file lock left by a previous installation attempt. If Windows displays a pending-restart notification, complete that restart before trying another update. Record whether the error appears at the same stage and with the same KB number.

3. Reset the Windows Update cache

Microsoft identifies corrupted cache files as a cause of update errors. Resetting the cache removes the contents of the update-download folder; it does not erase your Documents, Pictures or other personal folders.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows key + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. In the Services window, find Windows Update.
  3. Right-click it and choose Stop. Leave the Services window open.
  4. Open File Explorer and enter C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution in the address bar.
  5. Delete the contents inside SoftwareDistribution, not the parent Windows folder. If a file is in use, confirm that Windows Update is stopped and close any update-related window before trying again.
  6. Return to services.msc, right-click Windows Update, and choose Start.
  7. Restart Windows and check for updates again.

Windows will recreate needed cache data during the next update attempt. The first scan can take longer because the previous download cache is no longer available.

4. Correct date, time, time zone and storage conditions

Synchronize the clock

  1. Open Start > Settings > Time & language > Date & time on Windows 11, or Settings > Time & Language > Date & time on Windows 10.
  2. Turn on Set time automatically and Set time zone automatically where those options are available.
  3. Select Sync now and verify that the displayed time zone matches your location.

An incorrect clock or time zone can interfere with update communication and validation. After synchronizing, restart Windows Update and retry the same update.

Verify free space

Open Settings > System > Storage on Windows 11, or Settings > System > Storage on Windows 10, and check the system drive. Microsoft’s cited guidance lists at least 16 GB free for a 32-bit upgrade and 20 GB for a 64-bit upgrade. Microsoft’s page does not display a publication year for those figures, so treat them as the documented minimums for that guidance, not a guarantee for every modern update. Feature updates may require additional working space.

Remove or move only files you recognize, empty the Recycle Bin if appropriate, and do not delete Windows folders manually. If space is tight, a USB flash drive can temporarily hold personal files while you create room; it is storage, not a repair for error 0x80070057.

5. Repair protected system files with System File Checker

Use SFC after the simpler checks, especially when the error persists or Windows reports damaged system files. SFC examines protected files and repairs versions it can replace.

  1. Open Start and type Command Prompt.
  2. Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  3. Enter sfc /scannow and press Enter.
  4. Let the scan reach 100 percent. Do not close the window because progress appears stalled.
  5. Read the final message. Restart Windows if SFC repaired files, then try Windows Update again.

SFC can report that it found no integrity violations, repaired files, or found corruption it could not repair. Keep the exact result for escalation; do not infer that a clean SFC result proves the update cache or network is healthy.

6. Use DISM only when its repair source is available

Microsoft documentation and Microsoft Q&A describe this command for an online Windows installation:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  1. Open an elevated Command Prompt as in the SFC procedure.
  2. Run the command exactly as shown, including the spaces and forward slashes.
  3. Wait for completion; interruption can leave the component-repair operation unfinished.
  4. Restart Windows and run sfc /scannow again if Windows reports that component repair completed.
  5. Retry Windows Update and retain the DISM result.

The /Online option repairs the running Windows installation and uses Windows Update to obtain required files. That dependency is important: if Windows Update itself cannot provide files, the command may fail or remain unable to repair the image. In that situation, follow Microsoft’s documented offline-source or support guidance rather than assuming that repeating the same online command will solve the problem. An offline repair requires a source that matches the installed Windows edition and build; do not substitute an arbitrary image or command from an unverified guide.

7. Retry, then identify what changed

After each repair, restart once and attempt the same update. Change one category at a time so you can tell whether the troubleshooter, cache reset, clock correction, SFC or DISM affected the result. If the update succeeds, allow Windows to complete all required restarts before judging the installation finished. If it fails again, capture the exact code and stage instead of repeatedly deleting folders or running repair commands without new information.

When to escalate to Microsoft support

Escalate when the error survives the troubleshooter, restart, cache reset, clock and storage checks, SFC and an appropriate DISM attempt. Microsoft Learn recommends using its diagnostic and support processes for unresolved Windows Update errors. Provide:

  • the normalized code 0x80070057 and the complete error message;
  • the update KB number and whether the failure occurred during download, installation or reboot;
  • your Windows edition, version and build;
  • the final SFC message and any DISM error text;
  • whether the SoftwareDistribution cache was reset, and whether date/time synchronization and free-space checks passed.

Do not delete additional system directories, disable security protections permanently or edit the registry simply because the code remains. Those actions can create new failures without addressing the corrupted files, permissions or configuration that Microsoft associates with this code.

As an optional shortcut after the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7 and can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements, invalid redirects and shared DLL files. It also offers settings adjustments, temporary and cache cleanup, privacy and vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, file shredder and crash log; it complements antivirus software rather than replacing it. A free trial is available by category for at least two days, followed by a subscription, and results vary because no tool repairs every crash.

The Bottom Line

Use the documented code 0x80070057, begin with the Windows Update troubleshooter and a restart, then reset the cache, verify clock and storage, run SFC, and use online DISM only when Windows Update can supply its repair files. Preserve the error details and escalate with your Windows build and command results if the sequence does not resolve the failure.
