1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWindows Update error 0x80070032 means ERROR_NOT_SUPPORTED: Windows received a request that the current installation cannot support. It is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Restart first, run the Windows Update troubleshooter, check storage and update services, repair Windows with DISM followed by SFC, and then reset the update cache. If the error appears on an Insider or preview build, check channel and build compatibility. If it occurs during a reset or recovery operation, verify Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). The exact KB number, OS build and operation that failed determine the final fix.
What error 0x80070032 means
Microsoft defines 0x80070032 as ERROR_NOT_SUPPORTED, with the message “The request isn’t supported.” Windows can return the same code for different operations, so the number alone cannot identify a damaged file, a bad update cache or an incompatible build.

Microsoft-hosted support examples show the code during Windows 11 Insider or preview-build installation. In that situation, the requested build may not be available for the selected channel, or an expected intermediate update may have been skipped. Microsoft also documents the code when WinRE is unavailable during an Autopilot Reset. That recovery-specific case does not prove that WinRE caused an ordinary Windows Update failure.
Use the operation that failed as your first clue:
- Normal cumulative or feature update: start with the standard repair sequence and update-cache reset.
- Insider or preview update: verify the current build and Insider channel before attempting deeper repairs.
- Reset, restore or recovery workflow: inspect WinRE with
reagentc.
Before changing Windows Update
Record the failure
Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history and write down the failed KB number, date and any accompanying message. Run winver and record the Windows edition, version and OS build. These details are essential if the problem persists because 0x80070032 does not identify the root cause by itself.

Protect your data
Back up important documents before using an installation-media repair or any reset option. The commands below rename update folders rather than deleting them, but a backup remains prudent before system servicing.
Check storage realistically
For an upgrade, Microsoft’s current guidance calls for at least 16 GB of free space on a 32-bit system or 20 GB on a 64-bit system. Those figures are published upgrade guidance, not a guarantee that every quality update needs exactly that amount. Check Settings > System > Storage and keep additional room for temporary files if Windows reports a space problem.
Disconnect variables
Shut down and restart Windows, disconnect nonessential USB devices, docks and external drives, then retry the update once. Leave the keyboard, mouse, display and network connection attached. A peripheral or security product that inserts a filter driver can complicate troubleshooting; remove only hardware you can safely reconnect later, and do not disable protection permanently.
Run Microsoft’s first-line repair sequence
1. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, select Windows Update and choose Run. On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, choose Windows Update and run the troubleshooter. Apply the recommended correction, restart if prompted and try the same update again.
2. Check the services Windows Update depends on
Press Win+R, enter services.msc and confirm that these services are present and not disabled:
| Service | Role in the update process | What to check |
|---|---|---|
Windows Update (wuauserv) |
Coordinates detection, download and installation. | It should not be disabled; start it if it is stopped and Windows allows it to start. |
Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) |
Transfers update files in the background. | It should not be disabled; start it when stopped. |
Cryptographic Services (cryptSvc) |
Supports signature and catalog validation. | It should be available and running when Windows Update is operating. |
Do not change unrelated services or force a startup mode you do not understand. If one of these services immediately stops again, note that behavior; it points to a separate service, policy or component problem rather than merely a stale download.
3. Repair the component store with DISM
Open Command Prompt as administrator: select Start, type cmd, right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator. Enter:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
DISM checks the running Windows image and repairs component-store corruption. Microsoft states that “DISM provides the files required to repair your corrupted files.” The normal online command obtains replacement content through Windows Update, so a broken update client can prevent completion. Let the process reach 100 percent; do not close the window because progress may pause for a while. A successful run may report, “The restore operation completed successfully.”
If DISM says source files cannot be found, use a Windows installation image that matches the installed edition, language and build as an alternate /Source. The source must be suitable for the image being repaired; using an unrelated release can create a new servicing mismatch. When the online source is unavailable, obtain matching installation media directly from Microsoft and follow its documented source syntax rather than guessing a path.
4. Run System File Checker after DISM
In the same elevated Command Prompt, after DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
SFC verifies protected Windows files and replaces incorrect versions with valid copies. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and retry Windows Update. If it reports that some files could not be repaired, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once; preserve the final message for escalation instead of repeatedly running the command without a new diagnosis.

Reset the Windows Update cache and services
If the image is healthy but the same update still fails, the update database or downloaded packages may be damaged. Microsoft’s reset sequence stops the relevant services, renames their working folders and starts the services again. Renaming keeps the old folders available for recovery while Windows creates fresh ones.
Use an elevated Command Prompt
Open Command Prompt as administrator and run each line in order:

“The service was stopped successfully” is expected for services that were running. If a stop command says the service is not started, continue. A rename error usually means a service still has a file open; restart Windows, repeat the stop commands and try the rename again. Do not delete the folders while services are active.
Restart Windows after the sequence. The first scan can take longer because Windows must recreate update metadata and download packages again. Check Update history and record the new result. If the old SoftwareDistribution.old or catroot2.old folder is no longer needed and disk space is tight, remove it only after confirming that updates work; keeping it temporarily gives you a rollback reference.

When an Insider or preview build is involved
Confirm the installed build
Run winver and note the full version and OS build. Then open Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program. Check the selected channel and whether Windows reports that the device is eligible for that channel.
Preview channels have build and channel compatibility requirements that do not apply in the same way to standard releases. A device can therefore show 0x80070032 even when DISM, SFC and the cache are functioning normally. Do not keep resetting components if the requested build is not offered to your channel.
Choose a supported path
If the build and channel do not match, install the update offered for the current channel or change participation using the options Windows presents. Availability depends on the device, account and Microsoft’s current rollout; a channel change does not guarantee that a particular older preview build will become installable.
When the installation path itself is unsupported or the preview installation is badly damaged, a compatible Microsoft ISO repair install may be necessary. Back up first, use media matching the installed edition and language, and select the option that keeps personal files and applications when it is offered. A repair install is different from a clean installation; read every screen before confirming.

Check WinRE status
For a reset, restore or other recovery operation, open an elevated Command Prompt and run:
reagentc /info
Review the Windows RE status line. Microsoft documents that Autopilot Reset requires WinRE. If WinRE is disabled and the recovery workflow requires it, enable it with:
reagentc.exe /enable
Run reagentc /info again to confirm the status, restart and retry the recovery operation. If the command reports a missing or invalid recovery image, record that message rather than assuming an ordinary Windows Update cache reset will repair it. WinRE is a context-specific check; it is not evidence that every 0x80070032 update failure is a recovery-environment problem.
Choose the next step by failure pattern
| Observed situation | Most relevant action | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Standard release update fails and no preview features are enabled. | Run the troubleshooter, DISM, SFC, then reset the update components. | This covers service state, component-store corruption and damaged update databases. |
| The failure began after an Insider or preview change. | Use winver and Windows Insider Program settings to check build/channel compatibility. |
The request may be unsupported for that channel rather than locally corrupted. |
| DISM completes but Windows Update still fails. | Reset SoftwareDistribution and catroot2, then reboot. |
DISM repairs the image; the cache reset targets update metadata and downloads. |
| DISM cannot obtain repair files. | Use a matching installation image as an alternate source. | The online repair source may be unavailable because the update client is broken. |
| Reset or recovery reports the code. | Run reagentc /info and enable WinRE when appropriate. |
Recovery workflows depend on a functioning Windows Recovery Environment. |
If 0x80070032 persists
Collect evidence before escalating
Record the exact KB number, Windows edition, version, OS build, Insider channel if applicable, the operation that failed and the final DISM/SFC messages. Also note whether the troubleshooter changed anything, whether the services stayed running and whether the cache folders could be renamed.
Review Settings > Windows Update > Update history for repeated failures and use Event Viewer to inspect Windows Update and servicing errors around the failure time. Logs are useful only when paired with the build and KB number; searching for the code without that context often produces unrelated fixes.
Do not use registry cleaners as a shortcut
Registry-cleaner utilities are not a documented remedy for this error and can remove entries that other applications need. Microsoft-hosted guidance warns against relying on such tools. The built-in troubleshooter, DISM, SFC, documented cache reset and a compatible repair install provide a more controlled progression.
Know when to stop repeating commands
If the same KB fails after a clean cache rebuild, DISM and SFC report no corruption, and the build is supported, the remaining cause may be a Microsoft rollout issue, policy restriction, hardware-specific compatibility hold or another servicing condition. At that point, use the recorded build, KB and logs to seek Microsoft support or an administrator’s diagnosis instead of repeatedly deleting folders or forcing an incompatible package.
