If Windows Update shows 0x80070005, Windows is reporting Access Denied: the update process cannot obtain a required permission. The string 0X08007045D in the topic is not Microsoft’s normal formatting and may combine a mistyped zero with a different code. 0x8007045D is associated with an input/output device failure, not the same permission condition. Check the exact HRESULT in Windows Update history before choosing a repair.

Start with the built-in troubleshooter and a restart. Then check administrator access, security-software conflicts, services, storage, and system-file integrity. Reset update components only after those lower-risk steps. Back up personal files before advanced repair or any reinstall.

Identify the exact error before changing anything

A single character changes the diagnosis. Windows HRESULTs normally contain eight hexadecimal digits after 0x. The title’s 0X08007045D has an extra zero and does not match the documented formatting for either common update error.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. On Windows 11, choose Windows Update; on Windows 10, choose Update & Security > Windows Update.
  3. Select Update history (or View update history on some Windows 10 builds).
  4. Expand the failed quality, feature, driver, or definition update and copy the complete code exactly, including every leading zero.
  5. Record the update’s KB number, your Windows edition and version, and whether the failure happens during download, installation, or restart.

0x80070005 Access Denied (E_ACCESSDENIED); permissions, servicing files, or a security-software conflict can block Windows Update. Follow the permissions, services, component-repair, and reset steps below.
0x8007045D An input/output device error in Windows contexts; storage, removable media, or another device may be involved. Use the I/O checks and disconnect unnecessary devices before repeating update repair.

Prepare a safe troubleshooting session

Several repairs change services, cached update files, or system components. Preparation prevents a failed repair from becoming a data-loss event.

  • Back up personal files. Copy documents, photos, browser exports, and other irreplaceable data to an external disk or a USB flash drive. A USB flash drive prepares a recovery copy; it does not repair Windows Update by itself.
  • Use an administrator account. If your account is standard, sign in with an administrator or ask the device owner to approve each elevation prompt.
  • Note the baseline. Write down the exact HRESULT, KB number, Windows version/build, available disk space, and the time of the failure. These details are needed if you later contact Microsoft Support.
  • Save open work and connect reliable power. A restart is required several times, and a laptop should not lose power while servicing files.
  • Remove only unnecessary peripherals. Leave the keyboard, mouse, display, and network connection attached. Disconnect external drives, card readers, docks, and printers temporarily if the verified code is 0x8007045D or the failure occurs while reading or writing update media.

Run the official Windows Update troubleshooter first

The troubleshooter makes low-disruption checks and can repair common configuration problems. It is the correct first-line action for supported Windows 10 and Windows 11 installations.

Windows 11

  1. Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
  2. Find Windows Update and select Run.
  3. Allow the diagnostic to complete and apply any suggested repair.
  4. Restart Windows, return to Settings > Windows Update, and select Check for updates.
  5. Install the same KB again and check Update history if it fails.

You can also open the Get Help app and launch its automated Windows Update troubleshooter. Follow its prompts, restart when requested, and run Check for updates again rather than repeatedly clicking retry without a restart.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows 10

  1. Open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot.
  2. Select Additional troubleshooters, choose Windows Update, and select Run the troubleshooter.
  3. Apply the proposed fixes, restart, then return to Windows Update and select Check for updates.

If the troubleshooter reports that it could not identify a problem, continue with the checks below. That result does not prove that permissions, cached files, or a device problem are healthy; it only means the automated checks found no repair to apply.

Check administrator access and security-software conflicts

Confirm elevation

Open Settings > Accounts > Your info and verify that the account is an administrator, or test the update while signed in to a known administrator account. When a command or service console asks for permission, choose Yes. A denied elevation prompt is itself evidence that the account cannot complete the repair.

Test security software in a controlled way

Microsoft lists security software conflicts as a possible cause of 0x80070005. If your organization permits it, temporarily pause third-party antivirus or firewall scanning just long enough to run one update check. This is a diagnostic test, not a permanent fix:

  1. Disconnect from untrusted networks and close sensitive applications.
  2. Use the security product’s documented pause or maintenance control; do not uninstall it or alter unrelated protections.
  3. Run Windows Update > Check for updates once.
  4. Immediately restore protection, restart if requested, and run the check again.

If the update succeeds only while protection is paused, contact the security product’s support team for an allowed Windows Update exception. Do not leave antivirus or firewall protection disabled, and do not interpret a failed update as proof of malware.

Verify services, storage, and the update environment

Inspect update services

Press Win+R, enter services.msc, and press Enter. In the Services console, locate Windows Update, Background Intelligent Transfer Service, and Cryptographic Services. A service that is stopped when Windows expects it to run can prevent downloads, signature checks, or installation.

  1. Double-click a service and read its Service status.
  2. Use Start if it is stopped. If it is already running, choose Restart only when the control is available.
  3. Leave the startup type at its existing setting unless Microsoft documentation for your Windows build specifically instructs a change.
  4. Close Services, restart Windows, and try the update again.

If a service refuses to start, note the exact message. Repeatedly forcing it to run or changing registry permissions can make servicing harder; keep that message for escalation instead.

Check free space and the system drive

Open Settings > System > Storage (Windows 11) or Settings > System > Storage (Windows 10) and confirm that the Windows drive has room for the download, temporary files, and rollback data. Delete only files you recognize, empty the Recycle Bin if appropriate, and remove an unused application through Settings > Apps when more space is needed. Do not delete folders inside C:Windows or the update cache manually at this stage.

Separate permission failures from I/O failures

For confirmed 0x8007045D, shut down and reconnect the computer without unnecessary external drives, hubs, memory cards, or printers. Try a different USB port or cable only if the update process is reading installation media from that device. If the error returns with all external devices removed, the storage or system-file checks below are more relevant than permission changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repair Windows component and system-file corruption

Corrupted servicing files can make an otherwise authorized update appear denied. Use an elevated terminal: right-click Start, choose Terminal (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin), and approve the prompt. Run one command at a time and wait for it to finish.

  1. Run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth. Deployment Image Servicing and Management checks the component store used by Windows servicing. The process can pause at a percentage for several minutes; do not close the terminal solely because the number stops changing.
  2. After DISM completes, run sfc /scannow. System File Checker verifies protected Windows files and replaces damaged copies when a usable source is available.
  3. Restart the computer even if either command reports that no corruption was found.
  4. Run Check for updates and compare the new result with the original KB and HRESULT.

Use commands appropriate to your Windows version and follow Microsoft’s documented output. Do not paste registry edits or permission-reset scripts from an unknown site. A message that DISM cannot find source files, SFC cannot repair all files, or the terminal itself cannot elevate is useful evidence for the next escalation step.

Reset Windows Update components for a persistent 0x80070005

A component reset removes or renames cached update data so Windows can create a clean download and metadata set. It is more disruptive than the troubleshooter: pending downloads are discarded, and an update may need to download again. Use it after recording the code and trying the earlier steps, especially when the same 0x80070005 returns for multiple KBs.

  1. Open Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
  2. Stop the Windows Update, Background Intelligent Transfer, and Cryptographic services using Microsoft’s documented reset procedure for your Windows version. If a service reports that it is already stopped, continue; if it refuses to stop, record the message rather than killing the process.
  3. Rename the update cache folders C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution and C:WindowsSystem32catroot2 as directed by Microsoft’s Windows Update reset guidance. Renaming preserves the old folders for inspection while allowing Windows to create fresh ones.
  4. Start the services again using the same documented procedure.
  5. Restart Windows, reconnect only essential peripherals, and select Check for updates.

The exact service commands and folder-handling details differ between supported Windows releases. If a command returns an access-denied message, stop and resolve the administrator or security-software issue instead of repeatedly forcing the reset. Never delete unrelated folders or alter registry ACLs as a substitute for the documented procedure.

  • The results and messages from the troubleshooter, DISM, SFC, and any component-reset command.
  • Whether the update behaved differently after a restart, with security software paused for the controlled test, or with external devices disconnected.
  • Relevant Windows Update diagnostic logs requested by Microsoft Support. Do not upload personal documents or private keys with those logs.

For a managed computer, send this information to the organization’s administrator first; policy, endpoint security, or servicing controls may intentionally block changes. For a personal computer, provide the same information to Microsoft Support and identify the exact code family instead of saying only that Windows Update is “denied.”

Use installation media or reinstall only as a last resort

When permissions, corruption, and component resets do not restore servicing, an in-place repair or reinstall may be appropriate. This is the highest-disruption path and should follow a verified backup.

Prepare the backup

Copy personal files to a USB flash drive or another trusted destination and verify that the copies open. Export browser data and record application license information where needed. A backup is preparation for recovery, not a repair for the update error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the least destructive media option available

An in-place repair installation can preserve more applications and settings when the Windows edition and installation media are compatible, but the available choices depend on the release and licensing state. A clean installation formats the Windows partition and removes applications, settings, and files stored there. Read every installer screen, disconnect backup drives so the wrong disk cannot be selected, and keep the product or account information required for activation.

After installation

Install network and chipset support as required by the computer maker, run Windows Update repeatedly until no further updates are offered, restore applications from trusted installers, and copy personal files back only after the new system is stable. If the same I/O error appears during installation, investigate the storage device or installation media rather than repeating the same USB attempt.

Choose the next step by code and disruption

Situation Best next action Disruption Evidence produced
Code is unclear or malformed Copy the HRESULT and KB from Update history. None Exact diagnosis target
First failure on Windows 10 or 11 Run the version-specific Windows Update troubleshooter, restart, and check again. Low Troubleshooter result
Confirmed 0x80070005 Verify administrator access, perform a controlled security-software test, then inspect services and storage. Low to moderate Permission, service, and conflict observations
Repeated failure after basic checks Run elevated DISM and SFC, then restart. Moderate Servicing and file-integrity output
Persistent access-denied failures Reset Windows Update components using Microsoft’s procedure and collect logs. Moderate to high Fresh-cache result and reset messages
Confirmed 0x8007045D Disconnect unnecessary devices, check storage and media, and preserve the I/O message. Low to moderate Device-dependent reproduction
All repair paths fail Back up files, obtain compatible installation media, and consider in-place repair before a clean install. High Installer and hardware behavior

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Diagnosing the title instead of the history entry: the extra zero in 0X08007045D can send you down the wrong path.
  • Disabling protection indefinitely: a temporary pause is only a controlled diagnostic; restore antivirus and firewall protection immediately.
  • Changing registry permissions from an unverified script: incorrect ACLs can prevent Windows from servicing future updates.
  • Deleting update folders before stopping services: this can leave files locked or create a second failure. Use the documented reset sequence.
  • Skipping the backup before reinstalling: installation media can remove applications, settings, or files depending on the option selected.
  • Repeating the same failed attempt without recording output: the KB, HRESULT, command result, and device conditions are what allow support to distinguish permission, corruption, and I/O causes.

As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements, invalid redirects, shared DLL files, settings that increase CPU, RAM or disk load, temporary and cache files, and app-crash logging. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7; its free trial is offered by category for at least two days before a paid subscription. It complements antivirus rather than replacing it, and results vary—no tool repairs every crash.

The Bottom Line

Verify the exact code first: 0x80070005 is an access-denied update error, while 0x8007045D points to an I/O problem. Run the built-in troubleshooter, check permissions and services, repair components, reset update caches when necessary, and reserve reinstall media for failures that survive those steps.
