If Windows Update shows 0x800745D, first check the exact code in Update history. Microsoft documents the nearby code 0x8007045D, which means “The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.” The distinction matters: use the troubleshooting sequence below only after confirming what Windows actually reports.
Check whether the code is 0x800745D or 0x8007045D
The literal 0x800745D code does not appear in the Microsoft material used for this error. A missing zero is easy to overlook in a screenshot or search query, while 0x8007045D is a documented Windows I/O-device error. An I/O error means Windows could not reliably read from or write to a device while downloading, unpacking, or installing update data. The device may be internal storage, removable media, or another component involved in the transfer; the code alone does not identify one failed part.

Open Windows Update history rather than relying on a copied search phrase. In Windows 11, open Settings > Windows Update > Update history. In Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View update history. Expand the failed update and copy the complete hexadecimal code. If it is a different code, follow advice for that code instead of assuming that every “download error” is an I/O failure.
Do these checks before changing Windows
Save open work and back up important files before clearing caches or investigating storage. A repeated I/O error can be caused by damaged media or storage, and a backup is more valuable than another update attempt. Note the update name, the date and time of the failure, whether the error occurs during download or installation, and whether a USB or DVD is connected. Disconnect nonessential external drives, card readers and hubs for the first Windows Update retry, but leave any device that Windows needs to boot connected.

- Use a stable internet connection. If possible, test the update on a different network to distinguish a local connection problem from a device-read problem.
- Check available space on the Windows system drive. A download can fail when Windows cannot reserve room for the package, temporary files or the rollback data needed during installation.
- Temporarily remove network obstacles that you control, such as a VPN or proxy. Check whether a firewall or security product is blocking Microsoft download endpoints; restore normal protection immediately after the test.
- Keep the computer connected to reliable power during servicing. Do not interrupt a restart, rollback or installation screen.
1. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter first
Microsoft’s first-line procedure is the Windows Update troubleshooter. It can diagnose common download and installation problems and attempt repairs without requiring you to delete system files manually.
- Windows 11: open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, or start the automated Windows Update troubleshooter in the Get Help app when Windows offers that route. Follow each prompt and allow the check to complete.
- Windows 10: open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Windows Update, then select Run the troubleshooter.
- Apply any repair the troubleshooter reports. Restart the computer even if it says that no change was necessary.
- After the restart, open Windows Update and select Check for updates. Record whether the same update and code return.
A successful troubleshooter result does not prove that hardware is healthy; it only means that Windows found and addressed one of the conditions it can detect. If the error returns, continue in order rather than repeatedly running the same check.
2. Separate a download blockage from an I/O failure
Several conditions can produce a message that looks like a download failure. Use the checks below before resetting anything.
| What to check | How to check it | What the result suggests |
|---|---|---|
| Internet connection | Open several unrelated sites, then retry Windows Update. If available, test a different network. | If only one network fails, investigate that connection, proxy or firewall before blaming storage. |
| Free disk space | Open Settings > System > Storage and inspect the Windows drive. Remove only files you recognize or move personal data after backing it up. | Low space can prevent complete downloads, extraction or installation. |
| VPN or proxy | Disconnect a VPN for the test. Review Settings > Network & internet > Proxy and disable a manually configured proxy only if your network does not require it. | A blocked or redirected connection can leave an incomplete update package. |
| Firewall or security software | Check its event log or allow-list guidance. Do not leave protection disabled beyond the controlled test. | A blocked Microsoft endpoint can look like a failed download; this does not establish that the security product is defective. |
| External devices | Shut down, unplug nonessential USB storage and hubs, restart, and retry. | If the error disappears, reconnect devices one at a time to identify a removable-media or connection problem. |
Windows Update also depends on its services being available. If a service has been disabled by a policy, cleanup utility or manual change, the update may never complete even when the network works. Check the services after the cache reset and before escalating to hardware.
3. Reset incomplete or corrupt Windows Update cache files
Windows stores downloaded update data in the SoftwareDistribution folder. An interrupted download or damaged cache entry can be reused on every attempt. Microsoft’s cache-reset remedy is to stop Windows Update, clear the folder’s contents, start the service again, reboot and retry.
- Sign in with an administrator account. Close Settings and any installer window.
- Press Win + R, enter
services.msc, and press Enter. - Find Windows Update, right-click it and choose Stop. Leave the Services window open.
- In File Explorer, select the address bar and enter
C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution. Delete the contents inside this folder, including downloaded files and subfolders. Do not delete theSoftwareDistributionfolder itself. - Return to Services, right-click Windows Update, and choose Start. If Windows reports that files are in use, confirm that the service is stopped and close any update-related window before trying again.
- Restart the computer. Check Windows Update and download the update again.
You can perform the service portion from an elevated Terminal if you prefer commands:
net stop wuauserv
Clear the folder in File Explorer, then run:
net start wuauserv
The reset removes cached update packages, not your personal documents. Windows will download a fresh copy, so the next attempt can take longer. If the same error appears immediately with a new package, cache corruption is less likely and the storage or media branch deserves more attention.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors4. Repair Windows component and system files
Corrupted servicing components can prevent a valid update from being read or applied. Microsoft’s upgrade guidance recommends checking the component store with DISM and then checking protected system files with System File Checker (SFC).
- Right-click the Start button and choose Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin). Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command and wait for it to finish:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
DISM may pause at a percentage while it works. Do not close the window or power off the computer. When DISM completes, run:

SFC reports whether it found and repaired protected files. Restart Windows after both commands, then check for updates. If DISM or SFC reports that it could not complete, copy the exact message. A failed repair is useful evidence that the problem is deeper than a stale download cache; do not repeatedly run the commands without addressing the reported condition.
5. Check update services and use a clean boot for conflicts
Windows Update can fail when required services are disabled or when a third-party startup program interferes with the installer. First, open services.msc and confirm that Windows Update is not disabled. If your organization manages the computer, a policy may intentionally control this setting; ask the administrator before changing it.

A clean boot starts Windows with Microsoft services and a minimal set of startup programs. It is a diagnostic test, not a permanent configuration:
- Press Win + R, type
msconfig, and press Enter. - On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services, then select Disable all. Hiding Microsoft services first prevents you from disabling core Windows components.
- Open the Startup tab and select Open Task Manager. Disable enabled third-party startup items, then close Task Manager.
- Select OK in System Configuration and restart.
- Retry Windows Update. If it succeeds, re-enable services and startup items in groups, restarting between groups, until the conflicting program is identified.
- When testing is complete, return to
msconfigand choose the normal startup option so the computer returns to its usual configuration.
If the update still fails in a clean boot with a freshly downloaded package, a background application is less likely to be the cause. Continue with installation-media and hardware checks instead of leaving the computer in clean-boot mode.

If the error occurs while upgrading or reinstalling Windows from a USB flash drive or DVD, treat the media as a separate branch from Windows Update’s cache. Microsoft Q&A guidance associates 0x8007045D with corrupt or incorrectly created installation media and recommends creating the USB or DVD again.
- Obtain a fresh Windows installation download from Microsoft’s official source for your edition and architecture. Do not reuse an image that was interrupted, modified or only partially downloaded.
- Recreate the installer using Microsoft’s current media-creation method. Follow its erase and format prompts carefully; creating media normally removes existing files on the target drive.
- If the original flash drive has produced read or write errors, use a different, reliable USB flash drive with sufficient capacity. A replacement drive can eliminate defective removable media, but it cannot repair an internal SSD, hard drive or memory module.
- Connect the newly created media directly to the computer rather than through an unpowered hub. If one USB port fails, try another port, then retry the installation.
- Verify that the computer can read other files from the media before starting the upgrade. Stop if files copy slowly, disappear, or produce additional I/O errors.
Recreating media is appropriate when the failure happens only from that USB or DVD. If Windows Update fails with no installation media connected, media replacement is unlikely to be the complete answer.
7. Escalate repeated I/O errors to hardware diagnostics
The documented meaning of 0x8007045D is an I/O-device error. Microsoft discussions identify several possible contributors, including incomplete files, faulty memory, damaged storage and bad external media. These are possibilities, not a diagnosis: the available guidance does not establish one guaranteed SSD, USB model, memory module or security product as the culprit.
Hardware suspicion becomes stronger when all of the following are true:
- The exact code is confirmed as
0x8007045D. - The Windows Update troubleshooter, cache reset, DISM and SFC do not change the result.
- The failure occurs with a fresh update package or freshly recreated installation media.
- The computer also shows file-copy errors, unexplained freezes, corrupted downloads or failures when reading and writing other data.
Back up personal files before running tests that stress a drive. Then use diagnostics supplied by the computer or drive manufacturer for storage and memory. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for interpreting warnings; do not assume that a single short test proves a drive is healthy. If a diagnostic reports a problem, stop repeated update attempts and arrange repair or replacement. Preserve the failing drive until important data has been recovered or copied.
Quick Recap
Choose the next remedy from the failure pattern
| Observed pattern | Most useful next action | Risk to personal data |
|---|---|---|
| Only one Windows Update package fails; no external media is involved | Run the troubleshooter, verify connection and space, reset SoftwareDistribution, then run DISM and SFC. |
Low during troubleshooting; still keep a current backup. |
| Several updates fail after interrupted downloads | Check blockers and services, clear the update cache, restart and retry. | Low; cached update files are disposable. |
| Failure occurs only with one USB or DVD installer | Recreate the media and, if necessary, use a replacement flash drive and a different USB port. | Formatting the target media erases its existing contents. |
| Fresh media and Windows Update both produce I/O errors | Back up data and run manufacturer storage and memory diagnostics. | Potentially high if a failing drive is repeatedly stressed; back up first. |
| Error disappears in a clean boot | Re-enable third-party services and startup items in groups to identify the conflict. | Low; this changes startup configuration, not personal files. |
Final verification checklist
- The code was copied from Windows Update history and is not a mistyped
0x800745D. - The Windows Update troubleshooter completed, the computer was restarted, and the update was checked again.
- Internet access, free space, VPN or proxy settings, security-product blocking and external devices were checked.
- The Windows Update cache was reset only after the service was stopped.
- DISM completed before
sfc /scannow, followed by a restart. - Update services and, if needed, a clean boot were tested.
- USB or DVD media was recreated when the failure was tied to installation media.
- Important data was backed up before hardware diagnostics, and manufacturer diagnostics were used when fresh media still generated I/O errors.
