Error 0x80070032 is not a single, universal Windows failure. It can be raised by Windows Update, Microsoft Store/AppX packages, or MSIX Core. Start by noting exactly where the message appears and which update or app is named. For a normal Windows Update download, run the built-in troubleshooter, restart, reset the update download cache, repair system files, and check network or policy blockers. Store and WinAppRuntime failures need a different package and endpoint check.
What error 0x80070032 means
The hexadecimal code is context-dependent. Microsoft’s MSIX Core documentation uses 0x80070032 for a package that contains comments or Package Support Framework functionality MSIX Core does not support. The same code has also appeared during Windows 11 Insider Preview servicing and while Microsoft Store installs an AppX package. Therefore, the code alone does not identify the cause or prove that Windows is damaged.

Before you start: record the failed item
Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history (Windows 11) or Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View update history (Windows 10). Write down the update name, KB number if shown, Windows edition and build, and whether the code appeared in Windows Update or the Store. For a Store failure, record the app or package name exactly. These details determine whether a generic cache reset is appropriate or whether you need a package-specific or build-specific remedy.

- Save open work and sign in with an account that has administrator rights before running service or system-file commands.
- Keep the computer connected to reliable power and a stable network while servicing runs.
- Do not delete an AppX package or framework merely because its name appears in the error. Dependencies can make an unsupported removal leave other apps unable to start.
Windows Update: the safest repair sequence
1. Run Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter
- On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Select Windows Update, choose Run, and allow the checks and repairs to finish.
- On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, select Windows Update, and choose Run the troubleshooter.
- Restart Windows even if the troubleshooter reports that it made no changes. After signing in, return to Windows Update and select Check for updates.
This first pass uses supported Windows diagnostics and has the lowest risk because it does not require deleting update data or changing system components manually.
2. Confirm connection, storage, and policy access
A download can fail when the device cannot reach Microsoft’s update endpoints or cannot stage the package. Confirm that ordinary websites load, disconnect from a VPN temporarily, and check whether a proxy is configured under Settings > Network & internet > Proxy. On a work or school computer, an administrator may intentionally restrict update services; do not bypass that policy without approval.
Check available space in Settings > System > Storage (Windows 11) or Settings > System > Storage (Windows 10). Remove only files you recognize, and leave enough free space for the download and installation. If third-party firewall or security software controls outbound connections, verify that it is not blocking Windows Update endpoints. Re-enable protection immediately after a controlled test.
3. Reset the Windows Update download cache
Incomplete or corrupted files in the update cache are a documented reason for repeated download failures. A reset removes the cached download so Windows can obtain a fresh copy; it does not uninstall your installed updates.

- Open Windows Terminal (Admin), PowerShell (Admin), or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Stop the Windows Update service by running
net stop wuauserv. Wait for confirmation that the service stopped. - In File Explorer, enter
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionin the address bar. Delete the contents of this folder, not the folder itself. If you want a narrower reset, delete only the contents ofC:WindowsSoftwareDistributionDownload. - Return to the elevated terminal and run
net start wuauserv. - Restart the PC, open Windows Update, and select Check for updates.
If Windows says a file is in use, confirm that the Windows Update service is stopped and try again. Do not change permissions on the folder or delete unrelated folders under C:Windows. The first scan after a reset can take longer because the cache has to be rebuilt.
4. Repair the component store and protected system files
Use system-file repair when the cache reset does not help, Windows reports damaged components, or other Windows features are malfunctioning. Run the commands in this order from an elevated terminal:
- Run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthand wait for it to reach 100 percent. DISM checks and repairs the Windows component store used for servicing. - When DISM finishes, run
sfc /scannow. System File Checker verifies protected Windows files and replaces damaged copies when possible. - Restart Windows, then return to Windows Update and retry the named update.
Do not close the terminal while either scan is running. A progress percentage that pauses for several minutes is not, by itself, evidence that the command has frozen. If DISM or SFC reports that it could not complete repairs, note the exact message; repeated retries will not resolve a missing repair source or a policy restriction.

5. Retry and inspect the result
After the restart, select Check for updates once and allow the download and installation to finish without repeatedly pressing the button. Open Update history to see whether the same KB failed, a different prerequisite failed first, or the installation succeeded. If the code returns, record the current build, KB number, and the stage at which it fails before moving to the escalation paths below.

When Microsoft Store or WinAppRuntime shows 0x80070032
A Store message is not proof that the Windows Update cache is corrupt. If the failing item is WinAppRuntime.Main.1.8 or another AppX package, use the package path.
Verify Store registration
In an elevated PowerShell window, query whether the Store package is registered for the system:
Get-AppxPackage -AllUsers *WindowsStore*The command is a check, not a removal instruction. If the package is missing or registration is damaged, use the supported Store repair or registration procedure for your exact Windows build. Avoid copy-and-paste scripts that remove and re-add every AppX package; dependencies and per-user registrations can make those scripts unsafe or unsupported.

winget search "Windows App Runtime"If the search result identifies the required WinAppRuntime package, use the exact ID and version displayed by winget with its upgrade command. Do not substitute a similarly named community package, and do not remove a framework package to force an upgrade. A package may be shared by several applications.
Check firewall and proxy endpoints
Microsoft’s Store troubleshooting guidance calls for checking that required endpoints are reachable through the firewall or proxy. Temporarily test on a trusted network without a VPN, verify that the system proxy is correct, and ask the network administrator whether Store and package-delivery domains are filtered. Restore the normal network configuration after testing.
Why MSIX Core can return the same code
MSIX Core is a deployment technology with its own package-support limits. In Microsoft’s table, 0x80070032 indicates package comments or Package Support Framework functionality that MSIX Core does not support. That is a package-compatibility diagnosis, not a general Windows Update diagnosis. Capture the package name, MSIX Core version, Windows version, and installer that produced the message. Then obtain a package built for the supported deployment technology or use the vendor’s documented installation route. A Windows Update cache reset will not add an unsupported MSIX Core capability.
Escalation for a named KB or feature update
Download the package from Microsoft Update Catalog
When a specific KB repeatedly fails after the troubleshooter, cache reset, and file repairs, search that exact KB in the Microsoft Update Catalog. Match the package to your Windows release, architecture (for example, x64 or ARM64), and edition. Before downloading, check whether a newer cumulative update has superseded it. Installing an obsolete package can produce another failure or leave the original issue unchanged.

Manual installation is appropriate only when you have identified the exact KB and platform. It is not a way to guess which update belongs on the computer. Close applications, run the downloaded package, restart when requested, and verify the result in Update history.
Insider Preview and build-specific failures
An Insider Preview failure can depend on the exact flight and build. Record the full build number and channel rather than treating an ordinary retail repair as equivalent. A matching Insider ISO or repair-install workflow may be required for that build. Such media must match the installed channel and architecture; using unrelated installation media can remove the preview configuration or create a different servicing problem.

What not to do
- Do not assume every 0x80070032 report has the same cause.
- Do not delete the entire
C:Windowsdirectory or alter permissions to force a cache reset. - Do not remove WinAppRuntime or other framework packages without checking dependencies.
- Do not install a Catalog package solely because its KB number looks similar; verify the release, architecture, and supersedence status.
- Do not disable firewall, proxy, or security controls permanently. Use a controlled test and restore the protection.
- Do not treat an Insider Preview case report as proof that the same ISO or repair path applies to every Windows installation.
When to seek further support
Escalate with a precise record: Windows edition and full build, update or package name, KB number, the surface showing 0x80070032, the step that failed, and the exact text from DISM, SFC, or the Store. This information lets support distinguish a corrupted cache from a package-compatibility problem, a blocked endpoint, or a build-specific servicing defect.
