Start by confirming the code and the Windows component that displayed it. The string 0x8007422 appears in user reports about Microsoft Store launch and download failures, as well as some Xbox or game sign-in problems, but Microsoft has not published a universal definition for this exact code. Run winver to record your Windows build, then use the Store-specific fixes below if the failure is in Microsoft Store. Do not substitute the similar-looking 0x80070422; that is a different code and should be diagnosed only when those exact characters are shown.
What 0x8007422 means—and what it does not prove
There is no established Microsoft error-code definition that maps every instance of 0x8007422 to one cause. Microsoft Q&A pages contain reports of the code when the Store would not open, downloads failed, or a game sign-in stopped, but those pages describe individual experiences rather than a formal diagnostic specification.

That uncertainty matters because the same characters can appear at different points in Windows. A Store launch problem, an app-download problem, an Xbox sign-in problem, and a Windows Update failure can require different repairs. Treat the code as a clue, not a diagnosis.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- It is not, by itself, evidence of malware. The code is a Windows-style hexadecimal message. Its presence does not establish that a virus is on the computer.
- It is not automatically a Windows Update error. Use a Windows Update diagnosis only if the message appeared in Windows Update and the displayed code is confirmed.
- It is not interchangeable with 0x80070422. A disabled-service explanation belongs to 0x80070422 when that exact code and matching symptoms are present, not to 0x8007422 by visual similarity.
Identify the failing surface before changing anything
Write down where the message appeared, what you were doing, and whether the problem affects one account or every account on the PC. This determines which branch of the repair sequence is appropriate.

| Microsoft Store will not launch | The Store package or its local cache may be damaged, or access may be blocked. | Reset the Store cache, then use the app’s Repair and Reset options. |
| Store opens but one or more apps will not download or update | Store registration, network endpoints, proxy rules, policy, or account state can interfere with transactions. | Reset the cache, install Windows updates, verify time and location, then check registration and network policy. |
| Xbox or a game sign-in shows the code | The failure may be in the sign-in surface rather than the Store package. | Record the exact app and operation before applying Store commands. |
| Windows Update displays the code | Update components and Store components are separate troubleshooting paths. | Confirm the characters with winver and keep the investigation in Windows Update unless the Store also fails. |
| Only one Windows account is affected | Per-user package registration or local app state is more likely than a machine-wide block. | Run per-user registration without elevation and compare with another account. |
| Every account is affected, or the PC is managed | Machine policy, firewall, proxy, or endpoint filtering may be involved. | Ask the administrator to review Store and Windows Update access rules. |
Prepare a safe repair session
- Press Windows key + R, type
winver, and select OK. Record the Windows edition, version, and build number. Keep this information with the exact error text. - Take note of the operation that failed: opening the Store, downloading, updating, or signing in. If only one app is affected, record its name; if every Store transaction fails, record that broader scope.
- Save open work before resetting an app or running package commands. Store reset operations can remove the Store’s local state, so you may need to sign in again or repeat a pending download.
- If this is a work or school computer, identify whether a proxy, firewall, or organization policy is enforced. Do not remove a managed policy on your own; involve the administrator.
1. Reset the Microsoft Store cache with wsreset.exe
For a Store launch or download failure, this is the least invasive Store-specific action.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
wsreset.exeand select OK. - Wait while the cache is cleared. Microsoft notes that a blank Command Prompt window can remain visible for about ten seconds; it should close automatically and Microsoft Store should open.
- Try the same Store operation again. Test both opening the Store and starting the affected download if those were separate failures.
Do not close the blank window immediately unless it remains open well beyond the expected interval. If the Store does not open after the window closes, continue to the app repair steps rather than repeatedly launching the command.
2. Install Windows updates and verify time and location
Microsoft lists current Windows updates and correct time and location settings among the first checks for Store launch problems. An outdated build can have package or Store components that a later cumulative update addresses.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Open Settings and go to Windows Update (on some Windows 10 builds, select Update & Security, then Windows Update).
- Select Check for updates. Install the offered updates and restart when Windows requests it.
- Return to Windows Update after the restart and check again until no additional applicable update is offered.
- Open Settings > Time & language > Date & time. Ensure the date, time, time zone, and automatic time options reflect your actual location.
- Open Settings > Time & language > Language & region and verify that the region is correct for where the PC is being used.
- Retry the Store operation after the system clock and region are corrected.
If the PC cannot reach Windows Update, note that separately. A blocked update endpoint can also prevent Store downloads, so move to the policy, firewall, and proxy checks rather than assuming the Store package alone is broken.
3. Repair, then reset Microsoft Store in Settings
Windows provides an app-level repair sequence that does not require a package command. Use Repair first; use Reset only if Repair does not resolve the failure.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps. On some Windows 10 releases the page is named Apps & features.
- Find Microsoft Store, open its three-dot menu (or select the app entry), and choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair. Wait for Windows to finish, then launch Microsoft Store and repeat the failed operation.
- If the error remains, return to the same page and select Reset. Confirm the reset when prompted.
- Open the Store again and test. A reset can remove the Store’s local state; be prepared to sign in again and restart an interrupted download.
Do not reset unrelated applications merely because they are listed nearby. The target for this procedure is Microsoft Store, and the observed symptom should remain tied to the Store or its transaction.
4. Verify and re-register the Store package
If cache reset and app reset fail, the Store package may not be correctly registered for the user. Microsoft Learn documents a registration command for the applicable package scenario:

Add-AppxPackage -RegisterByFamilyName -MainPackage Microsoft.WindowsStore_8wekyb3d8bbwe
- Open Windows PowerShell from the Start menu.
- Use the account that is experiencing the Store failure. Do not open an elevated (administrator) PowerShell window unless you intentionally want to register the package for the administrator account.
- Run the command exactly as shown. If PowerShell reports that the package family or command is unavailable on your build, stop and match the procedure to the Windows version and package state recorded with
winver. - Close PowerShell, restart Windows, and test Microsoft Store.
Registration is not the same as downloading a Store installer from an unofficial website. Avoid replacing the package with files from random download sites; the command works with the package already known to Windows.

A correctly registered Store can still fail when Windows policies or network controls block Store and Windows Update endpoints. This is especially common on managed computers, filtered networks, and systems configured with a proxy.
When the PC is managed
- Ask the administrator whether Microsoft Store is disabled by policy for your user or device.
- Ask whether AppLocker or another application-control rule blocks the Store package or its dependencies.
- Have the administrator verify that the organization permits Store downloads and updates for the affected account.
When a proxy or firewall is in use
- Confirm whether the failure occurs only on the managed network. A difference between a home connection and a corporate connection is useful evidence, not proof that the home network is the permanent fix.
- Have the network administrator check that Microsoft Store and Windows Update endpoints are not blocked.
- Verify that the configured proxy is intentional and available. A stale proxy can allow ordinary browsing while preventing Store transactions.
Do not disable security controls permanently to test a download. Make one controlled change with the administrator, retest, and restore the original setting if it is not the cause.

6. Escalate persistent AppX failures carefully
When the Store still fails after cache reset, updates, time and region checks, app reset, registration, and access checks, treat it as a broader AppX or package-state problem. Microsoft’s broader AppX guidance includes package-corruption checks, Reset-AppxPackage, AppLocker or policy review, and event-log collection.
Match commands to the installed build
AppX cmdlets and package behavior vary by Windows build and by whether a command is run for the current user or an administrator. Use the exact syntax documented for the build recorded by winver; do not paste a command intended for a different release. A command that succeeds in an elevated window may change the administrator’s package registration without repairing the affected standard user.
Collect evidence before repeating destructive steps
- Record the complete error text, timestamp, Store operation, Windows build, and affected account.
- Note whether
wsreset.exeopened the Store, whether Repair or Reset changed the behavior, and whether registration returned an error. - For a managed PC, provide the administrator with the relevant AppX or Store event-log entries and the exact time of the failed attempt so they can correlate policy or endpoint events.
Use Reset-AppxPackage only as an escalation
The AppX reset path can alter local package state and should follow the documented package and account context. It is not a universal repair for every error carrying similar hexadecimal characters. If the Microsoft guidance for your build requires a package name, family name, or user scope, supply those values exactly rather than guessing.
Quick Recap
Choose the next branch from the result
- wsreset fixed the issue: The immediate problem was consistent with Store cache state. Keep the Windows build current and record the successful step for future support.
- Repair fixed it but Reset was unnecessary: The app’s registered local components were repairable without clearing all local state.
- Reset fixed it: Recreate any local Store state that was removed, such as a sign-in session or pending download, and test the same operation once more.
- Registration changed the symptom but did not restore downloads: Continue with endpoint, proxy, firewall, and policy checks; registration alone does not prove that the network path is open.
- Nothing changes and all users are affected: Escalate to AppX package, policy, and event-log diagnostics with administrator help.
- Only an Xbox or game sign-in fails: Stop treating the Store as the confirmed source until the exact app, account, and sign-in surface have been isolated.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Changing
0x8007422to0x80070422because the strings look alike. - Running an elevated PowerShell command when the failing Store account is a standard user.
- Repeating
wsreset.exewithout checking Windows updates, clock, region, or network restrictions. - Deleting Store packages or registry entries from an online “fix” that does not match the installed Windows build.
- Disabling a firewall, proxy, or organization policy permanently instead of testing one controlled change.
- Assuming a successful command means every Store, Xbox, and Windows Update problem has the same cause.
