How to Fix Windows Store Error 0x80070057

Error 0x80070057 in Microsoft Store is usually an installation, update, cache, package-registration, or connectivity symptom rather than a diagnosis of one specific fault. Start with the low-risk wsreset.exe cache reset, install Windows and Store updates, verify time and region, then repair or reset Microsoft Store. Only after those steps should you investigate package registration, proxy or firewall policy, and event logs.

What error 0x80070057 means in Microsoft Store

Microsoft does not publish a Store-specific definition that maps 0x80070057 to one root cause. In practice, the code can appear while a Store app is installing, updating, launching, or waiting in a pending state. Treat it as a symptom: the Store could not complete an operation with its cache, app package, account registration, Windows services, or Microsoft endpoints.

The number itself is not evidence that your computer is infected, and it does not mean that Windows is permanently damaged. A failed Store transaction can leave a partial download or stale local data, so work from the least disruptive fix to the most technical one. Do not begin by deleting system folders or running an unverified PowerShell script.

Before troubleshooting

  • Save work and close Microsoft Store and any app that is being installed or updated.
  • Confirm that you can sign in to Windows with the account that normally uses Microsoft Store. If the computer is managed by an employer or school, policy restrictions may be intentional.
  • Connect to a stable network. If you use a VPN, proxy, captive portal, or filtered DNS service, note its current settings so you can restore them.
  • Have your Microsoft account password available. A Store reset can remove local app data and may require you to sign in again.
  • If the error affects only one app, record its name and whether the failure occurs during installation, updating, or launch. That distinction helps separate a Store-wide problem from a publisher-package problem.

Use the fixes in this order

Action What it changes Local-data risk Privileges Diagnostic value
wsreset.exe Clears the Microsoft Store cache Low; does not remove installed apps Standard user in most cases Shows whether stale cache data caused the failure
Windows and Store updates Refreshes Store and operating-system components Low, although a restart may be required Standard user; administrator approval may be requested Rules out known compatibility and servicing issues
Time, region, and location checks Corrects licensing and endpoint-selection inputs Low Standard user, unless policy locks settings Identifies certificate, licensing, or regional mismatches
Repair Rebuilds Store components without deliberately clearing all local data Low Standard user or administrator approval Separates damaged app files from broader package problems
Reset Restores Store to a clean app state Medium; local Store data can be removed Standard user or administrator approval Tests whether corrupted local data survives repair
Registration and package checks Examines or rebuilds the Store app registration Medium; stop if other apps are selected accidentally Often administrator Finds missing or corrupted package metadata
Network-policy review Checks firewall, proxy, VPN, and enterprise restrictions Low if settings are documented first Administrator or network administrator may be required Explains downloads that remain pending or fail immediately

1. Reset the Microsoft Store cache

Run the supported cache reset

  1. Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog.
  2. Type wsreset.exe exactly, then select OK.
  3. A blank Command Prompt window opens. Leave it alone; do not type into it or close it manually.
  4. After about ten seconds, the window closes and Microsoft Store opens automatically. This behavior is described by Microsoft Support.
  5. Try the original installation or update again.

This operation targets Store cache data, not your installed applications. If the blank window remains open for several minutes, close it, restart Windows, and run the command once more. If Store opens but the same code returns, continue to updates rather than repeatedly clearing the cache.

2. Install Windows and Microsoft Store updates

Update Windows

  1. Open Settings.
  2. On Windows 11, select Windows Update. On Windows 10, select Update & Security, then Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates and install every available update, including quality, servicing, or Store-related updates.
  4. Restart when Windows asks, even if the update appears to have completed.

Older Windows 10 builds may need to be updated before Microsoft Store can work reliably. If Windows Update itself fails, resolve that separate failure first; Store downloads depend on Windows servicing components.

Update Microsoft Store

  1. Open Microsoft Store.
  2. Select Library on Windows 11. On some Windows 10 builds, select the More button (three dots) and then Downloads and updates.
  3. Select Get updates or Check for updates.
  4. Install any Microsoft Store update, then retry the affected app.

Menu labels vary between Windows 10 and Windows 11 builds. If the Store cannot open, complete Windows Update first and return to this step.

3. Check date, time, region, and location

Microsoft lists time and location settings among the checks for Store launch and download failures. Incorrect values can interfere with certificates, licensing, and the regional endpoint selected for a download.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings > Time & language > Date & time on Windows 11, or Settings > Time & language > Date & time on current Windows 10 builds.
  2. Turn on Set time automatically and select Sync now if that button is available.
  3. Confirm that Set time zone automatically is correct, or choose the correct time zone manually.
  4. Open Settings > Time & language > Language & region (Windows 11) or Time & language > Region (Windows 10).
  5. Set the correct country or region. Do not choose a different country merely to bypass an availability message; Store catalog and licensing vary by region.
  6. Review location access under Settings > Privacy & security > Location on Windows 11, or Settings > Privacy > Location on Windows 10, if your organization allows it.
  7. Restart Microsoft Store and try again.

4. Repair Microsoft Store, then reset it

Try Repair first

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11. On Windows 10, open Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
  2. Find Microsoft Store. Use the search box if necessary.
  3. Select the three-dot menu (Windows 11) or the app entry (Windows 10), then choose Advanced options.
  4. Select Repair and wait for Windows to finish.
  5. Open Microsoft Store and repeat the failed action.

Repair is the narrower intervention. It attempts to correct the app without deliberately clearing all of its local data.

Use Reset only if Repair fails

  1. Return to Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Microsoft Store > Advanced options (or the equivalent Windows 10 path).
  2. Select Reset, confirm the warning, and wait for the process to complete.
  3. Launch Microsoft Store, sign in again if prompted, and retry the installation.

Windows supports Repair and Reset for MSIX, MSIXBundle, APPX, and APPXBundle applications. Reset can remove the Store app’s local data, so preferences, cached sign-in information, or other local state may need to be restored. It does not intentionally uninstall every app you have obtained from the Store, but the affected app may need to reinitialize.

5. Check Store registration and package state

When cache, updates, and app repair do not help, the Store package may be missing, incorrectly registered for the current user, or internally inconsistent. These checks are more technical and can require administrator approval. Create a restore point or confirm that you have a current backup before changing package registration.

Verify that the package is present

  1. Right-click Start and choose Terminal (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin).
  2. Accept the User Account Control prompt.
  3. Run:
Get-AppxPackage -Name Microsoft.WindowsStore

A result containing the package name, version, and installation location indicates that the package is present for the current user. If no result appears, or if the command reports a deployment error, do not delete folders from C:Program FilesWindowsApps; those files are protected and manual deletion can damage other apps.

Re-register Microsoft Store for the current user

Re-registration rebuilds the app’s registration from its manifest. In an elevated PowerShell window, the commonly used Microsoft Store-specific command is:

Get-AppxPackage -AllUsers Microsoft.WindowsStore | ForEach-Object { Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)AppXManifest.xml" }

Run it only when the package exists and the command is appropriate for your Windows build. Read each error in the output. If Windows reports that the package is in use, close Store and restart before trying once. If it reports missing dependencies, deployment-service failures, or access-policy errors, stop repeating the command and move to the network and policy checks or Microsoft Support. A command copied from an unknown website can target every installed app or alter permissions, so avoid broad “repair all apps” scripts.

Check whether another user is affected

If the Store works in a newly created local test account but not in your normal account, the problem is likely user-specific registration or local data. If every account fails, focus on Windows servicing, package installation, or network policy instead. Do not remove your primary Windows profile merely to test this distinction.

6. Review network, proxy, VPN, and enterprise policy

Store downloads use Windows Update and additional Microsoft endpoints. A browser can still open ordinary websites while a firewall, proxy, VPN, DNS filter, or organization policy blocks Store traffic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check local connection settings

  • Temporarily disconnect a VPN and retry, provided your organization permits this test.
  • Open Settings > Network & internet > Proxy and verify that a manually configured proxy is intentional. On Windows 10, the path is Settings > Network & Internet > Proxy.
  • Reconnect to the network, then restart Store. Do not leave a corporate proxy disabled if your organization requires it.
  • Check the firewall’s allowed-app and outbound rules. Security software may log a blocked Store or delivery-service connection without displaying a Store error.
  • On a managed PC, ask the administrator whether Store access, app installation, Windows Update, or Microsoft endpoint access is restricted. Group Policy and mobile-device management can override local settings.

Interpret pending downloads

An app that remains at “Pending” points more strongly to a service, policy, account, or connectivity issue than to a single corrupted cache entry. After confirming network access, let Windows Update finish, restart, and test a different free Store app. If all downloads remain pending, collect the time of the failure and relevant Windows event entries for support instead of repeatedly resetting the Store.

7. Use package management or escalate safely

Try package management when the app is supported

Microsoft documents winget for supported package-installation scenarios. If you know the app’s exact package identity, open Terminal and use the documented search and install workflow for that package. A Store listing and a winget package are not guaranteed to be identical, so verify the publisher and package details before installing. If the app is paid, region-restricted, or distributed only through Store licensing, package management may not replace Store sign-in.

Collect evidence before contacting support

  • Write down the exact error code, app name, and whether it occurred during install, update, launch, or sign-in.
  • Record your Windows edition and build from Settings > System > About.
  • Note which steps changed the behavior, including whether wsreset.exe opened Store normally.
  • Check Event Viewer > Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > AppXDeployment-Server and Clip around the failure time. Copy relevant event IDs and messages; do not paste unrelated personal data.
  • Contact Microsoft Support or the app publisher when registration, package, and policy checks do not resolve the error. Provide the evidence rather than running more unverified scripts.

If you want an optional automated shortcut after trying the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, clean temporary and cache files, check selected Windows settings and missing updates, and provide an app-crash log. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it; results vary and no tool repairs every crash. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7, with a free trial by category for at least two days before a subscription.

When to stop troubleshooting

Stop making changes when the Store works again, even if an old event entry remains. If only one app fails while other Store apps install normally, the publisher’s package, account entitlement, or regional availability is a more likely boundary than the Store cache. If every account and every app fails after updates, repair, registration, and policy checks, further local experimentation has diminishing value; support can inspect deployment logs and organization settings without risking additional damage.

Key takeaways

  • 0x80070057 is a Store symptom, not a single Store-only diagnosis.
  • wsreset.exe is the safest first action and requires no downloaded utility.
  • Install Windows and Store updates before advanced package work.
  • Check automatic time, time zone, region, and location before interpreting a download failure as corruption.
  • Choose Repair before Reset because Reset can clear local Store data.
  • Registration commands and policy checks are later steps; use an elevated shell carefully and stop on dependency or access errors.
  • Persistent failures often involve package registration, corrupted deployment state, or blocked Microsoft endpoints. Event logs and support escalation are safer than random scripts.
