How to Fix Windows Store Error 0x80070057 When an App Will Not Restore, Install, or Update

Error 0x80070057 usually appears when Microsoft Store cannot restore, install, or update an app. It does not have one confirmed cause, so use the least-destructive fixes first: run wsreset.exe, install pending Windows updates, check time and region, repair Microsoft Store, then reset it only if necessary. If the problem continues, repair the Store package registration, investigate firewall or proxy controls, and reserve Windows recovery for last.

What error 0x80070057 means in Microsoft Store

The code is conventionally written with a zero after the initial “x”: 0x80070057, not “ox80070057.” In Store-related reports it has appeared while an app could not be installed or updated, and community troubleshooting commonly starts with wsreset followed by resetting the Store app. Microsoft does not publish one universal root-cause definition for this particular Store symptom. Treat it as a signal that the Store transaction failed, not as proof of one specific fault.

The failure can involve cached Store data, an outdated Windows build, incorrect time or regional settings, damaged or unregistered app packages, or a firewall or proxy that blocks Store endpoints. The sequence below moves from a cache refresh that normally preserves app data to increasingly invasive repairs.

Before you start

  • Write down the app name, whether the action is a restore, install, or update, and the exact wording shown with 0x80070057.
  • Sign in to Windows with an account that can install updates. Package registration and recovery steps may require administrator approval.
  • Save work and close Microsoft Store and any affected app before running resets or package commands.
  • If you eventually use Windows recovery, make a current backup of important files even when you select the option to keep personal files.

Fix 1: clear the Microsoft Store cache with wsreset.exe

This is the least destructive first action for cache-related Store trouble. It does not ask you to remove the Store package or your installed applications.

  1. Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog.
  2. Enter wsreset.exe and select OK.
  3. Wait without closing the window. Microsoft describes the expected behavior this way: “A blank Command Prompt window will open, and after about ten seconds the window will close and Microsoft Store will open automatically.”
  4. When Store opens, sign in if prompted and retry the same restore, installation, or update.

If the window remains open for several minutes, closes without opening Store, or the original operation still returns 0x80070057, continue to the next section rather than repeatedly running the command.

Fix 2: install Windows updates and verify time and region

Store servicing depends on the Windows components around it. Microsoft’s Store troubleshooting guidance places Windows updates and checking time and location settings among the first checks.

Install pending Windows updates

  1. Open Settings from the Start menu.
  2. In Windows 11, select Windows Update. In Windows 10, select Update & Security, then Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates, install all available updates, and restart when Windows requests it.
  4. After the restart, open Microsoft Store and test the affected app again.

If an update is waiting for a restart, complete that restart before judging whether the Store repair worked. A Store update can also appear in the Store’s own Library area, so select Get updates there after Windows is current.

Check automatic time and location settings

  1. Open Settings > Time & language > Date & time.
  2. Turn on Set time automatically and select Sync now when that control is available.
  3. Open Settings > Time & language > Language & region and confirm that the country or region matches your actual location.
  4. Close and reopen Microsoft Store, then retry the operation.

Do not change the region merely to obtain an app from another market; use the setting that accurately represents where the Windows installation is being used.

Fix 3: repair Microsoft Store, then reset it if repair fails

Windows provides separate Repair and Reset actions for many packaged apps. Repair should come first because it attempts to correct the app without deleting its stored state. Reset is more invasive: it permanently deletes the Microsoft Store app data and reinstalls the app in a fresh state, so you may need to sign in again or reconfigure Store settings.

Run Repair

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps. On some Windows 10 builds the page is labeled Apps & features.
  2. Find Microsoft Store, select its three-dot menu, and choose Advanced options.
  3. Select Repair and wait for Windows to finish. The button may briefly show progress and then return to its normal state.
  4. Open Microsoft Store and repeat the failed restore, installation, or update.

Run Reset only when Repair does not resolve the error

  1. Return to Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Microsoft Store > Advanced options.
  2. Select Reset, read the warning, and confirm.
  3. After the reset completes, launch Store, sign in if required, and retry the app operation.

A reset of Microsoft Store does not mean that Windows itself has been reset, but it does remove Store app data. Record any Store-specific preferences you need before confirming it.

Fix 4: repair Store registration and package health

If cache and app-level repair do not help, the package may not be registered correctly, may fail activation, or may contain missing or corrupted files. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance identifies re-registration, Reset-AppxPackage, and obtaining a fresh package through Microsoft Store or Windows Package Manager as escalation paths.

Re-register Microsoft Store from PowerShell

Use this step only if you are comfortable with an administrator PowerShell window. It rebuilds the registration entry from the manifest already installed on the computer; it is not the same as manually deleting the Store package.

  1. Open Start, type PowerShell, right-click Windows PowerShell or PowerShell, and choose Run as administrator.
  2. At the prompt, run:

Get-AppxPackage -AllUsers Microsoft.WindowsStore | ForEach-Object { Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register ('{0}AppXManifest.xml' -f $_.InstallLocation) }

  1. Wait for the prompt to return. Red text can indicate that a package is in use or that a dependency is missing; note the complete message instead of repeatedly running the command.
  2. Restart Windows, open Microsoft Store, and test the affected app.

If the command reports that no package is found, do not invent a package path or delete folders from WindowsApps. Move to the supported package and recovery options below.

Use Reset-AppxPackage when it is available

On Windows versions that provide the cmdlet, an administrator PowerShell session can target the Store package with:

Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.WindowsStore | Reset-AppxPackage

This resets the package state rather than manually removing protected files. If PowerShell says that Reset-AppxPackage is not recognized, skip it and use the Settings reset or a supported package acquisition method instead.

Obtain a fresh package through a supported source

Microsoft’s guidance also points to Microsoft Store or Windows Package Manager (winget) for obtaining a fresh package. In an administrator or standard terminal, depending on your device policy, you can search the configured sources with:

winget search Microsoft Store

Review the results carefully and install only the Microsoft Store package offered by the Microsoft Store source. The exact identifier and availability can vary by Windows edition, installed sources, organization policy, and geographic market. If winget reports that the source is unavailable or the package is blocked, do not substitute an unofficial download; continue with network or Windows recovery troubleshooting.

Fix 5: check firewall, proxy, and managed-network controls

A Store app can be correctly registered locally and still fail when required Microsoft endpoints are unreachable. Microsoft documents firewall and proxy policy as a troubleshooting area for Store downloads and updates.

Check the local connection

  • Confirm that ordinary websites load and that other Microsoft services are reachable.
  • If you use a VPN, proxy, content filter, or security gateway, test on a trusted connection that does not apply the same policy, if your organization permits that test.
  • Open Settings > Network & internet > Proxy and verify that a manual proxy is intentional. Do not remove an employer’s required configuration; ask the administrator to verify it instead.
  • In Windows Security > Firewall & network protection, check that the active firewall profile is running and that no organization rule is denying Store traffic. Avoid turning the firewall off as a routine fix.

When the computer is managed

Work, school, and family-management policies can block Store endpoints, app installation, or package sources. The durable fix is for the administrator to allow the required Microsoft Store services or provide an approved package. A local reset cannot override a policy that intentionally blocks Store access.

Fix 6: use Windows recovery only after app-level repairs

If the Store still fails after cache, update, settings, registration, and network checks, the broader Windows installation may need repair. Microsoft’s recovery guidance includes Reset this PC with an option to keep personal files.

  1. Back up documents, photos, browser data, license information, and any files stored outside the standard user folders.
  2. Open Settings > System > Recovery in Windows 11. In Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Recovery.
  3. Choose Reset this PC, select Keep my files, and review the list of apps and settings that Windows will remove.
  4. Follow the on-screen prompts, keep the device connected to power, and allow the process to complete.
  5. After setup, install Windows updates, sign in to Microsoft Store, and test the app before restoring optional software.

Keep my files preserves personal files but does not preserve every application, driver, setting, or Store state. If the reset screen offers cloud or local reinstall choices, read the displayed requirements and expected download before selecting one.

Why manually uninstalling Microsoft Store is a poor routine fix

Do not remove Microsoft Store with an unverified script or by deleting protected package folders. Microsoft does not recommend uninstalling the Store as a normal repair route. Once removed, the supported way back can require resetting or reinstalling Windows, which is substantially more disruptive than repairing or resetting the app. Use package re-registration and supported Store or winget sources instead.

Choose the next remedy by invasiveness and dependency

Remedy Invasiveness Data impact Privileges Main dependency
wsreset.exe Lowest Clears Store cache; does not intentionally delete Store app data 通常 standard user Local cache and Store launch
Windows update and time/region checks Low No intentional Store-data deletion Settings access; updates may require restart Windows Update and correct system settings
Settings Repair Low to moderate Attempts to preserve app state Settings access Installed Store package
Settings Reset Moderate Permanently deletes Microsoft Store app data Settings access Windows app-reset service
PowerShell re-registration or Reset-AppxPackage Moderate to high Targets package registration or state PowerShell; administrator may be required Usable local package and manifest
Fresh package through Store or winget Moderate May replace package state Depends on package source and policy Network access and an available official source
Reset this PC, Keep my files Highest Removes applications and settings; keeps personal files when completed as selected Administrator and recovery environment Backups, power, and a working recovery path

Start at the top and move down only when the preceding remedy fails. The table’s “data impact” describes what the action is designed to change; always read the warning displayed by your Windows build before confirming.

Targeted troubleshooting when the error persists

Store opens, but one app will not restore or update

Complete the cache, Windows update, time-and-region, and Store Repair steps first. If only one app is affected, note whether its package is listed as installed and whether another Store app can update. A single-package registration or dependency problem is more likely than a Store-wide cache problem, so use the package-health and re-registration steps rather than repeating wsreset.exe.

Every Store download fails immediately

After resetting the cache, test the network path. A proxy, firewall, security gateway, or organization policy that blocks Store endpoints can produce the same visible failure as a damaged package. Test a permitted alternate connection or ask the network administrator to check endpoint access before changing local app state again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repair works temporarily, but the error returns

Record when it returns and whether Windows updates, sign-in changes, or a network change preceded it. A recurring package-registration failure points toward the PowerShell and supported fresh-package steps. A recurrence only on one managed network points toward proxy or firewall policy.

PowerShell reports access, dependency, or deployment errors

Copy the full error text, including any package name and deployment code. Confirm that Microsoft Store is closed, restart Windows once, and retry the supported command only if the message indicates a transient lock. If the message identifies a missing dependency or blocked policy, use the official Store or winget source and involve the device administrator rather than deleting package files.

The Store is missing entirely

Do not download a random executable claiming to reinstall it. Check whether the device is managed, whether another user account can see Store, and whether a recent system cleanup removed a protected package. Microsoft’s supported recovery route after removal is resetting or reinstalling Windows, so treat a full reset as a last resort and back up first.

Verify the repair

  1. Restart Windows after any update, package registration, or recovery operation that requests it.
  2. Open Microsoft Store and confirm that it remains open for several minutes without an error.
  3. Use Library > Get updates and test the original app’s restore, install, or update action.
  4. Test a second small Store app only if needed to distinguish a Store-wide problem from one package’s problem.
  5. Keep the exact error text and the successful step in your notes in case the issue returns or an administrator needs to investigate.
