Windows Store error 0x800700422 is a Microsoft Store failure symptom, not a published diagnosis of one specific fault. Microsoft documentation does not map this hexadecimal value to a single cause. The practical repair path is to reset Store cache, install pending Windows updates, correct date and location settings, repair or reset the Store app, then check registration, packages, and network or organizational policies if the error appears during an install or update.

Follow the steps below in order. The first three are low-risk and require no administrator account. More advanced package and policy checks should be performed only when the earlier steps do not resolve the problem.

Write down the exact trigger before changing anything. The same code can accompany different Store failures, and the trigger determines which checks matter most.

  • Launch failure: Microsoft Store will not open, or closes immediately.
  • Install failure: an app download starts and then stops.
  • Update failure: an installed app or the Store itself cannot download an update.

Also record the full message, your Windows edition and build, whether the computer is managed by an employer or school, and whether other internet-connected apps work. This information is important if you eventually need Microsoft Support.

What the code does—and does not—tell you

There is no Microsoft-authored, code-specific explanation for 0x800700422 in the support material covering this problem. Treat it as an indicator that a Store operation failed rather than proof that one particular component is broken. Possible areas include stale Store cache data, outdated Windows components, damaged app registration or packages, and firewall, proxy, or organizational restrictions.

A precise diagnosis requires the operation that failed and, in difficult cases, AppX or Store event logs. Avoid fixes that claim the hexadecimal value always has one universal cause.

Use this repair order

Step Primary scope Risk Typical privilege Best symptom match
wsreset.exe Store cache Low Standard user Launch, install, or update problems
Windows Update Windows components Low Usually standard user; restart may be required Any Store failure on an outdated system
Time, region, and location Account and service settings Low Standard user Sign-in, download, or licensing-related failures
Repair or Reset in Settings Store app state Low to moderate Standard user Store opens incorrectly or remains unstable
Registration and package checks AppX deployment and user registration Moderate Administrator may be needed Persistent launch or package errors
Network and policy checks Firewall, proxy, and managed-device rules Variable Administrator or IT policy owner Download and update failures

1. Reset the Microsoft Store cache

This is the safest first repair because it targets cached Store state without removing your installed apps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press the Windows logo key + R to open the Run dialog.
  2. Type wsreset.exe.
  3. Select OK.

Microsoft says a blank Command Prompt window opens. After about ten seconds it closes automatically, and Microsoft Store opens. Do not close the blank window while the reset is running. Try the same launch, install, or update operation again when the Store appears.

2. Install every pending Windows update

Store troubleshooting should be done on a fully updated Windows installation because Store components depend on Windows servicing and deployment components.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Open Windows Update. On some Windows 10 installations this is under Update & Security > Windows Update; Windows 11 normally shows Windows Update as its own Settings section.
  3. Select Check for updates, install everything offered, and restart when Windows requests it.
  4. Return to Windows Update and check again until no further updates are offered.

After the restart, test Microsoft Store before moving to the more invasive steps. If the error began immediately after an update, note the update date and build in your records rather than removing updates as a first response.

3. Check date, time, region, and location

Incorrect time or location information can interfere with Store authentication, licensing, and service requests.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings and go to Time & language > Date & time (Windows 11) or the equivalent Time & language section in Windows 10.
  2. Turn on automatic time and select Sync now when that option is available.
  3. Open Language & region or Region and verify that the country or region matches your actual location.
  4. Review Windows location settings and allow location access if your Store workflow requires it.

Do not select a different country merely to bypass a Store restriction; region changes can affect app availability and licensing.

4. Repair, then reset Microsoft Store

Windows provides separate Repair and Reset actions in the Store app’s Advanced options. Repair attempts to correct the app while preserving more of its state. Reset is a stronger action and clears the Store’s local app data, so use it only if Repair does not help.

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps in Windows 11. In Windows 10, open Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
  2. Find Microsoft Store, select its menu or entry, and open Advanced options.
  3. Select Terminate if it is offered, then select Repair. Wait for the operation to finish and test the Store.
  4. If the error remains, return to the same page and select Reset. Confirm the prompt, then open Microsoft Store and sign in again if requested.

Labels and menu placement differ slightly between Windows 10 and Windows 11. Resetting the app does not reinstall every application obtained from the Store; it resets Microsoft Store’s own local state.

5. Check Store registration and package integrity

If cache, updates, settings, and Advanced options do not help, the Store may not be correctly registered for your user account, or a package may be missing or damaged. These are more advanced deployment operations.

Verify registration before changing packages

Use an elevated PowerShell window only if you are comfortable with administrative troubleshooting. Search for PowerShell, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator. Check whether the Microsoft Store package is present and registered for the affected user. If the package is absent, disabled, or reports deployment errors, record the exact message rather than repeatedly retrying.

Re-register the Store package

Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance includes re-registering an app when its registration is damaged. A commonly used administrative PowerShell repair is:

Get-AppxPackage -AllUsers *WindowsStore* | ForEach-Object { Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)AppXManifest.xml" }

Run this only in an elevated PowerShell window and let it finish. Red text can indicate that a package is in use, missing, or blocked by policy. Copy the complete output. If the command reports that the manifest or package cannot be found, do not invent a replacement path; move to package and policy diagnosis or seek support.

Address corrupted or missing dependencies

Store deployment can fail when a required AppX package is corrupted or missing. Microsoft’s checklist calls for checking package integrity and, when necessary, reinstalling Microsoft Store. Reinstallation is a system-level change: create a restore point or other recovery option first, close Store-related apps, and use only package sources and procedures appropriate to your Windows edition. On a managed computer, an administrator may have to perform this step.

6. Investigate download and update failures

If 0x800700422 appears only after you press Get, Install, or Update, focus on connectivity and policy rather than repeatedly resetting the app.

Check the network path

  • Confirm that ordinary websites and other Microsoft services load on the same connection.
  • Open Windows network settings and review the configured proxy. A proxy that requires authentication or blocks Microsoft endpoints can stop Store downloads.
  • Review firewall rules. Do not permanently disable protection as a test; instead, ask the network administrator to verify that required Store and package-delivery endpoints are allowed.
  • If the failure occurs only on a company or school network, test according to that organization’s support policy. A home-network test can distinguish a local policy from a Store account problem, but it does not authorize bypassing organizational controls.

Check managed-device policies

Organizations can restrict Microsoft Store through policy. Microsoft guidance specifically identifies settings such as RemoveWindowsStore as a possible cause. Open the organization’s device-management or Group Policy documentation, or contact IT, rather than changing a policy you do not own. A policy can make the Store appear unavailable even when cache and package registration are correct.

Use an alternative package path where appropriate

Microsoft’s technical guidance also recommends using winget to install packages when that package is available through the Windows Package Manager and your organization permits it. This is a workaround for obtaining an app, not proof that the Store itself is repaired. Confirm the publisher and package identity before installing, and keep the Store error details for later diagnosis.

7. Collect evidence before escalating

When the sequence above fails, preserve evidence before making further system changes. Record:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

  • Windows edition, version, and build number.
  • The exact Store error text and code.
  • Whether the failure is at launch, installation, or update.
  • The app name and package identity, if one specific app is affected.
  • Whether the device is managed and whether a proxy or restricted network is involved.
  • Any PowerShell output from registration or package checks.

Review Event Viewer under the Microsoft and Windows logs for AppX deployment, AppModel runtime, and Store-related events around the time of the failure. Export or copy the relevant event details, including timestamps and error numbers. Microsoft’s technical guidance identifies these logs as useful when registration and package checks do not resolve the issue. Provide the evidence to Microsoft Support or your organization’s IT team; it is more useful than reporting only the hexadecimal code.
