On Windows 11 version 24H2, also verify Microsoft Store, Windows Update, and Internet access. A separate failure can come from an invalid .wsb file, Group Policy, or a mapped-folder permission problem.
The procedure below starts with the checks that can make Sandbox unavailable altogether and then moves to configuration-specific errors such as 0x80070002, 0x80070005, ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND, and E_INVALIDARG.

What Windows Sandbox failed to start actually means
Windows Sandbox is a disposable, isolated Windows desktop for running untrusted Win32 applications. It uses hardware-assisted Hyper-V virtualization and starts as a temporary virtual machine. When you close it, its software, files, and state are deleted rather than saved to the host PC. A startup failure therefore means that Windows could not complete one of several stages: validating the edition, starting the Hyper-V hypervisor, registering the Sandbox component, obtaining the current Sandbox package, or loading a supplied configuration file.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThat distinction matters. If the feature is unavailable on your edition or the hypervisor cannot start, changing a .wsb file will not help. Conversely, if a blank Sandbox opens but one shortcut or configuration fails, the engine is working and the file or mapped folder is the more likely cause.

- Windows displays “Windows Sandbox failed to start” or “Windows Sandbox failed to initialize.”
- The window remains on the Sandbox logo and never reaches the desktop.
- A launch attempt reports “No hypervisor was found. Please enable hypervisor support.”
- A

Check these prerequisites before changing anything
Confirm the Windows edition
Open Settings > System > About and read the Windows specifications section. Windows Sandbox is supported on:
- Windows Pro
- Windows Enterprise
- Windows Pro Education or Pro SE
- Windows Education
Windows Home does not support the built-in Windows Sandbox feature. No Windows Features toggle, registry change, or startup repair can make Sandbox available on Home. If the About page says Home, the supported-edition requirement is the blocking issue; stop troubleshooting the Sandbox component until the device is running a supported edition.
Check your Windows version, especially on Windows 11 24H2
Press Windows key + R, enter winver, and note the version shown. You can also use Settings > System > About. Version 24H2 changes how Sandbox receives updates: the older Sandbox app can attempt to download its latest version from Microsoft Store. That makes Store, Windows Update, and Internet availability part of startup on an affected installation.

Verify hardware virtualization and the Microsoft hypervisor
Sandbox requires hardware virtualization in the PC firmware and the Microsoft Hyper-V hypervisor in Windows. Restart the computer, enter its UEFI or firmware setup using the key shown during boot, and make sure the hardware-virtualization option is enabled. The label differs by manufacturer. Save the change and boot Windows again.
Next open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features > Turn Windows features on or off. Ensure the Microsoft Hyper-V components and Windows Sandbox are selected where they are available. If Sandbox shows No hypervisor was found. Please enable hypervisor support.
, the hypervisor is not enabled or could not be made available. Windows Sandbox does not support third-party hypervisors as a substitute for Microsoft Hyper-V; running another virtualization product does not satisfy this prerequisite.
How to fix Windows Sandbox failed to start: the recommended order
1. Reset the Windows Sandbox feature
A feature reset clears a damaged or incomplete registration without reinstalling Windows. Use this exact sequence so Windows rebuilds the component cleanly:

- Less chaos, more calm. The refreshed design of Windows 11 enables you to do what you want effortlessly.
- Biometric logins. Encrypted authentication. And, of course, advanced antivirus defenses. Everything you need, plus more, to protect you against the latest cyberthreats.
- Make the most of your screen space with snap layouts, desktops, and seamless redocking.
- Widgets makes staying up-to-date with the content you love and the news you care about, simple.
- Stay in touch with friends and family with Microsoft Teams, which can be seamlessly integrated into your taskbar. (1)
- Open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features > Turn Windows features on or off.
- Clear the Windows Sandbox check box and select OK.
- Allow Windows to apply the change, then restart the PC.
- Return to the same Windows Features dialog and select Windows Sandbox again.
- Select OK, let Windows finish installing the feature, and restart a second time.
- Launch Windows Sandbox from the Start menu before testing any custom
.wsbfile.
This disable, restart, enable, restart sequence is a documented troubleshooting step for initialization failures. It is not a guaranteed cure for a missing hypervisor, an unsupported edition, a policy restriction, or a broken configuration file.
2. Restore Store and update access on Windows 11 24H2
If the device is running Windows 11 version 24H2 and the message says Windows Sandbox cannot upgrade to its latest version, test the services it now relies on:
- Confirm that the PC can reach the Internet without a captive-portal sign-in or a network filter blocking Microsoft services.
- Open Settings > Windows Update and check for updates. Allow a pending restart to complete.
- Open Microsoft Store and verify that it is available to the account and not blocked by organizational policy.
- In Store, open Library or Updates & downloads and check for a Windows Sandbox update or pending installation.
- Restart Windows and try a blank Sandbox launch again.
Microsoft notes that a first upgrade attempt can fail while installation continues in the background. If the component does not update immediately, check Store’s Updates & downloads page again rather than repeatedly removing the feature.
3. Test a blank launch before a custom configuration
Open Windows Sandbox from Start without double-clicking a .wsb file. This separates an engine problem from a configuration problem. If the blank desktop opens, the hypervisor and core feature are functioning; concentrate on the file, its paths, and any folder mapping. If even a blank launch fails, return to the edition, firmware virtualization, Hyper-V, feature-reset, and Store checks.
How to fix Windows Sandbox error 0x80070002
Error 0x80070002 is reported in some initialization failures and can be build- or configuration-specific. The practical repair documented for this situation is the Windows Sandbox feature reset: clear Windows Sandbox in Turn Windows features on or off, restart, enable it again, restart, and test a blank launch. Do not treat reports that reinstalling an unrelated application solved someone else’s machine as a universal remedy; such community reports are anecdotal and do not identify the underlying cause on your PC.

Validate a .wsb file when only one launch fails
A Windows Sandbox configuration file is XML. It can define networking, logon commands, mapped folders, and other settings. The Sandbox engine may be healthy while a file contains a missing path or an invalid value.
ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND
ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND means Windows cannot find a file or folder referenced by the launch. Check all of these locations:
- Confirm that the
.wsbfile itself still exists and that the shortcut or command points to its current location. - Check every host path used for a mapped folder. A renamed drive, disconnected external disk, or moved directory can invalidate the configuration.
- Use the full, correct path and confirm that the account launching Sandbox can read it.
- Try launching the blank Sandbox. If it works, the missing path is confined to the configuration rather than the Sandbox feature.
E_INVALIDARG
E_INVALIDARG indicates an invalid or erroneous .wsb configuration. Open the file in a text editor and inspect the XML structure, element names, closing tags, and values. Remove or correct a setting that is misspelled, unsupported, or formatted incorrectly, then save the file and retry. If you are unsure which setting is responsible, create a minimal file containing only the settings you need and add the remaining entries one at a time.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use a controlled test
- Launch the blank Sandbox from Start.
- Open the suspect
.wsbfile in a text editor rather than launching it immediately. - Check each path and setting against the file’s intended purpose.
- Save a copy, simplify the XML, and test again.
- Reintroduce optional settings individually so the failing entry is identifiable.
Fix access denied and mapped-folder failures
Error 0x80070005 means access is denied. Microsoft identifies a specific case in which restrictions on the Sandbox’s WDAGUtilityAccount prevent mapping a host folder directly to the Sandbox Desktop. If your configuration maps a host directory straight to that Desktop location, create a new subfolder inside the Desktop and map the host folder to that allowed subfolder instead. Test the mapping with a small, non-sensitive directory first.
Do not weaken permissions broadly just to make a mapping work. Keep the mapped content limited to what the test application needs, and remove the mapping after troubleshooting. If the error appears on a managed PC or Windows says that settings are enforced by an IT administrator, the restriction may come from Group Policy rather than your local file.
When Group Policy or an administrator blocks Sandbox
Organizational policy can enforce, disable, or restrict Windows Sandbox settings. Signs include a message that an IT administrator controls the setting, a feature that becomes unchecked after restart, or a mapped-folder rule that works on an unmanaged PC but fails on a work device.

- Write down the exact policy message and whether the failure occurs with a blank launch or only with a
.wsbfile. - Ask the device administrator to review the organization’s Windows Sandbox and virtualization policies.
- Have the administrator confirm that Hyper-V, hardware virtualization, Store access (when required), and the intended folder-mapping policy are allowed.
- Retest after policy changes have propagated and the computer has restarted.
Changing policy locally without authorization can conflict with the organization’s security design and may be reversed at the next policy refresh.

Why the Sandbox can stay on its logo
A Sandbox window stuck on the logo does not identify one single fault. If the logo appears before a desktop is created, the hypervisor may be unavailable or the feature registration may be damaged. On Windows 11 24H2, a package update that cannot reach Store or Windows Update can also interrupt startup. If the blank Sandbox eventually opens but a particular .wsb launch hangs, inspect that file and its mapped folders instead.
Use the controlled sequence rather than repeatedly clicking the icon: verify the edition, verify firmware virtualization and Hyper-V, reset the feature, confirm 24H2 update access when applicable, and then test a blank launch. The first point at which the result changes tells you which branch to investigate.
What not to assume will fix every startup failure
System File Checker, DISM, registry cleaners, third-party hypervisors, or purchasing a new physical accessory are not universal fixes for Windows Sandbox startup errors. The documented failure categories point instead to edition support, hypervisor availability, component state, Store and network access, XML configuration, and policy or permission restrictions. Build-specific defects may require checking the release notes for that exact Windows build; there is no established cumulative-update fix that resolves every Sandbox failure.
When to stop and gather details
If the supported edition is confirmed, firmware virtualization and Hyper-V are enabled, the feature has been reset, 24H2 update access is working, and a blank Sandbox still fails, collect the exact error text rather than guessing. Record the Windows edition and version, whether the failure affects a blank launch or only a .wsb file, the complete code, and whether the PC is managed by an organization. Those details let an administrator or Microsoft support channel match the failure to the appropriate component or policy instead of applying unrelated repairs.

Windows Sandbox uses the same hardware-based Hyper-V virtualization technology to isolate an untrusted Win32 application in a lightweight desktop. Closing the window permanently deletes the Sandbox software, files, and state. That disposable design is why files you need to keep must be copied to the host or another approved location before closing, and why a startup repair should first prove that the base environment works before you add mappings or automation.
