1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFirst copy the code exactly as Windows displays it. 0x8004005 and 0x80004005 are different codes. Microsoft documents 0x8004005 for a Windows Update scan that remains at 0 percent, not as a Windows Mail error. The documented repair is to register three Windows DLL files from an elevated Command Prompt and restart. If your actual problem is that the old Windows Mail app cannot send or receive messages, the central issue is different: Microsoft ended support for Windows Mail, Calendar, and People on December 31, 2024. You should export local data and move to new Outlook or Outlook.com.
Check the code and the symptom before changing anything
Error dialogs are easy to misread, especially when a zero is added or omitted. Look at every character, including the number of zeroes after 0x, and note what you were doing when it appeared.

If the dialog says 0x8004005 while checking for updates
This matches Microsoft’s documented Windows Update problem: the scan can stop at zero percent and show “Error: 0x8004005.” The documented causes are DLL files that are not registered correctly or a firewall blocking HTTPS (SSL) connections.

That symptom does not establish that 0x8004005 is a Mail error. The legacy Windows Mail, Calendar, and People apps reached end of support on December 31, 2024. Microsoft says those apps can no longer send or receive email or events, although local email, calendar events, and contacts remain exportable.

If the code is 0x80004005
0x80004005 is a separate code. Do not run the 0x8004005 DLL procedure on the assumption that the numbers are interchangeable. Confirm the exact message, the application showing it, and the operation that failed before choosing a repair.
Fix 0x8004005 when Windows Update stops at zero percent
Use this procedure only when the code is exactly 0x8004005 and the failure occurs during a Windows Update scan. You need an administrator account because the commands change Windows system registration.
1. Open an elevated Command Prompt
- Open the Start menu and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt in the results and choose Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt. The window title should indicate that it has administrator privileges.
A regular Command Prompt may reject the registration commands or report that access is denied. If that happens, close it and repeat the steps using Run as administrator.
2. Register each Microsoft-specified DLL
Run these commands one at a time. Press Enter after each line:
regsvr32 Softpub.dll
regsvr32 Wintrust.dll
regsvr32 Initpki.dll
After every command, Windows should display a confirmation dialog. Accept the confirmation before entering the next command. Do not paste all three commands into a dialog box, and do not skip a line because the first registration succeeded.

3. Restart Windows
When all three confirmations have been accepted, restart Windows normally. A restart is part of Microsoft’s procedure; it allows the updated registrations to be loaded before Windows Update scans again.
4. Retry the update scan
After signing in, open Windows Update and start the scan again. If it now proceeds beyond zero percent, the registration problem was preventing the scan from starting correctly.

Microsoft also identifies a firewall that blocks HTTPS (SSL) connections as a possible cause. Check whether your security policy, firewall, or managed network permits Windows Update’s secure connections. Do not turn the firewall off as a first-line “fix”; on a work-managed PC, ask the administrator to verify the rule instead. The DLL commands address registration; they cannot remove a network block.
When the commands do not complete successfully
- Check the spelling and punctuation of each command, including the period in
Softpub.dll,Wintrust.dll, andInitpki.dll. - Confirm that the window was opened with administrator rights.
- Record the text of any failure dialog before closing it. A different error may point to a permissions, file, or network problem rather than the documented 0x8004005 condition.
- Restart only after all three commands have produced their confirmation dialogs; repeating a command in a non-elevated window does not substitute for the required procedure.
Why this procedure does not repair the legacy Windows Mail app
The three DLL registrations are a Windows Update repair. They do not restore the online service functions of the retired Windows Mail, Calendar, and People apps. Microsoft’s support statement is explicit: support ended on December 31, 2024, and users can no longer send or receive emails or events with those apps.
Local information is a different matter. Microsoft says local emails, calendar events, and contacts remain exportable. Treat that data as the priority before removing, resetting, or abandoning the old app.

Export local data and move to a supported mail app
1. Preserve local information first
Open the legacy Mail and Calendar app while it is still available and identify the local email, calendar events, and contacts you need. Export those items using the app’s available export options or the format offered by your account or organization. Store the exported files somewhere separate from the old app, such as an external drive or a location approved by your organization, and verify that the files are present before continuing.
The export step matters because migration to a new app is not the same as copying every locally stored item automatically. Keep the original export until you have opened the data or confirmed that it is available in the destination account.
2. Start Microsoft’s migration prompt
- Open the legacy Windows Mail and Calendar app.
- When prompted, choose Open Outlook.
- Complete the migration to new Outlook, or use Outlook.com if that is the supported destination for your account.
The supported path is migration rather than trying to keep the retired application online. If the prompt does not appear, open new Outlook directly and sign in with the account you intend to use, then use the exported local data and account-specific import options available there.
Legacy Mail versus moving to new Outlook
| Question | Stay with legacy Windows Mail | Move to new Outlook or Outlook.com |
|---|---|---|
| Support status | Support ended December 31, 2024. | Microsoft’s recommended supported destination. |
| Send and receive | No longer available in the retired apps. | Designed for ongoing account access, subject to your account and network. |
| Local data | Local email, calendar events, and contacts remain exportable. | Import or reconnect the data after preserving the export. |
| Troubleshooting | There is no supported fix that restores the retired service. | Microsoft provides troubleshooting steps for connectivity, attachments, add-ins, profiles, and PST files. |
Troubleshoot Outlook after migration
These steps apply after you have moved to Outlook. They are not a guaranteed repair for the retired Windows Mail app.
Check the connection and account state
- Confirm that the computer has working internet access by opening another trusted service.
- In Outlook, check whether the app shows an Offline or Disconnected state. Reconnect it before testing send and receive again.
- If only one account fails, verify that you are signed in to the intended account and that the problem is not limited to that provider.
A connection check separates an application problem from a service or network problem. If Outlook remains disconnected, repairing a local profile will not correct a blocked or unavailable connection.

Remove oversized attachments
A message with an attachment larger than the account or server allows can remain in the outbox and make sending appear broken. Remove or reduce the oversized attachment, save the file separately, and retry the message. If several messages are queued, check the oldest one first because it may be blocking later mail.
Start classic Outlook in Safe Mode to test add-ins
For classic Outlook, open the Run dialog and enter:
outlook.exe /safe
Safe Mode starts Outlook without its add-ins. Send or receive a test message. If the problem disappears in Safe Mode, an add-in is a likely contributor. Close Outlook, disable add-ins through Outlook’s add-in management, and restart normally to identify the conflicting component. If the same failure occurs in Safe Mode, continue with profile and data-file checks instead of repeatedly reinstalling add-ins.
Repair or recreate the Outlook profile
Use Outlook’s account or profile management controls to repair the existing profile. If repair does not resolve the problem, create a new profile and add the account again. A new profile tests whether the original local configuration is damaged without immediately deleting the old profile. Keep the old profile available until the new one has synchronized and you have confirmed that required data is present.

Run the Inbox Repair Tool for a PST file
If your migrated setup uses a Personal Storage Table (PST) file, Microsoft’s supported sequence includes the Inbox Repair Tool. Close Outlook before scanning the file, select the correct PST, and allow the tool to repair any issues it reports. Make a backup copy of the PST first so that you can preserve the original if a repair changes its contents. Reopen Outlook and check folders, messages, and send/receive behavior after the repair.

Is 0x8004005 the same as 0x80004005?
No. The codes differ by one zero, but that difference changes the diagnosis. Microsoft’s exact-match documentation identifies 0x8004005 with a Windows Update scan that stops at zero percent and recommends registering Softpub.dll, Wintrust.dll, and Initpki.dll, followed by a restart. The available documentation does not establish one authoritative cause or universal fix for 0x80004005 in Windows Mail.
| Code shown | Documented context | What to do first |
|---|---|---|
| 0x8004005 | Windows Update scan stuck at 0 percent. | Use the elevated DLL-registration procedure, restart, and check the HTTPS firewall condition. |
| 0x80004005 | Different code; context must be confirmed from the exact dialog and application. | Do not apply the 0x8004005 commands solely because the numbers look similar. |
If your screen shows 0x80004005, write down the complete message, identify whether it appears in legacy Mail, new Outlook, classic Outlook, Windows Update, or another program, and follow troubleshooting for that exact product. A code copied from memory is not enough to select a safe repair.
Common mistakes and how to recover
Using the Windows Update fix for a retired Mail problem
Registering the DLLs can address the documented update-scan condition, but it cannot bring back send and receive in Windows Mail after the support end date. Export local data and migrate instead.
Confusing 0x8004005 with 0x80004005
Stop and recopy the code from the dialog. Applying a procedure for the wrong code can waste time and obscure the real application or network failure.
Skipping the data export
Do not assume that opening new Outlook automatically preserves every local message, event, or contact. Keep an export and verify the destination before removing the old setup.
Running commands without elevation
If registration reports an access error, reopen Command Prompt with Run as administrator. Do not weaken security controls to compensate for a missing elevation step.
Disabling the firewall indiscriminately
A blocked HTTPS connection is one documented possibility, but turning off protection can create a separate security risk. Check permitted Windows Update connections or involve the administrator responsible for the network.

Quick Recap
A practical decision path
- Read the code: distinguish 0x8004005 from 0x80004005.
- Identify the operation: Windows Update at zero percent points to the DLL and HTTPS checks; Mail send/receive points to the retirement and migration path.
- Protect local data: export local email, calendar events, and contacts before changing the old app.
- Complete migration: choose Open Outlook when prompted and use new Outlook or Outlook.com.
- Diagnose the new app: check connectivity, offline state, oversized attachments, Safe Mode, profiles, and PST repair in that order.
- Escalate with evidence: retain the exact code, full message, affected app, and the step at which the failure occurs.
