How to Fix Windows Insider Updates That Won’t Download or Install

Start by recording the failed update’s KB number or build, Insider channel, failure stage, and exact error code. Then restart, run Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter, and retry. If it still fails, use the code to choose a targeted fix: corrupted update files, a driver conflict, permissions, storage, connectivity, or the update database each require a different response. Insider builds also vary by channel and build, so a preview that another PC receives may not be offered to yours.

Identify exactly what failed before changing anything

A percentage by itself is not a diagnosis. “Stuck at 0%,” “stuck at 100%,” and “We couldn’t complete the updates. Undoing changes” can all result from different failures. Windows Update history usually contains the useful detail that the final message omits.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Record these five details

  • Stage: Did the update fail while downloading, while installing in Windows, or during the restart phase?
  • Update identity: Note the KB number, build number, or feature-update name.
  • Error code: Copy the complete hexadecimal code, such as 0x8007000d or 0xC1900101.
  • Insider context: Record your Windows version, selected Insider channel, and current build.
  • Symptoms: Write down whether the process stops at 0%, pauses between 51% and 99%, reaches 100% and rolls back, or repeatedly restarts.

Find the failed update in Windows Update history

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update, then Update history.
  3. Expand the failed quality, driver, or feature update entry.
  4. Copy the KB or build identifier and the complete error code.

For a generic rollback such as “Failure configuring Windows Updates” or “Undoing changes,” use the history entry to identify which update failed. Do not assume that the rollback text identifies the cause; Microsoft documents that the same wording can accompany different underlying errors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also note whether the entry says Download error, Install error, or a restart-related failure. A download failure points first toward connectivity, cache, or eligibility. An installation failure makes storage, drivers, permissions, and damaged components more relevant. A rollback after restart means setup reached a later phase and could not complete the transition to the new build.

Use the safe first-line fixes

Restart once, then check again

Save your work and choose Start > Power > Restart. After Windows starts normally, return to Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. A restart clears a pending reboot and can release files or services left in use by the previous attempt.

Run the Windows Update troubleshooter

On Windows 11, Microsoft directs users to the automated troubleshooter in the Get Help app. Open Get Help, search for Windows Update problems, and run the guided diagnostic. Accept a repair only when the result explains what it is changing. Restart when the troubleshooter finishes, then check for updates again.

On another Windows version, open that version’s Windows Update troubleshooter from Settings or Control Panel. The labels differ between releases, but the sequence is the same: run the diagnostic, apply its suggested repair, restart, and retry the update.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run the diagnostic while signed in normally rather than interrupting it with a shutdown. If it reports that a service was repaired, restart before testing. If it finds nothing, that result is still useful: continue with the code and build information instead of repeatedly running the same wizard.

Check space without treating it as a universal guarantee

Microsoft’s general upgrade guidance specifies at least 16 GB of free space for a 32-bit operating system and 20 GB for a 64-bit operating system. Those are general upgrade figures, not a promise that every Insider package needs exactly that amount. Insider builds can require additional temporary working space.

Open Settings > System > Storage and check the system drive. Remove temporary files you recognize, empty the Recycle Bin, or move large personal files to another disk. Microsoft notes that a USB drive may be needed when a device has a small hard drive. Disconnect removable storage that is not being used for the upgrade, but leave any drive Windows specifically requests connected.

Check space before beginning a long installation, not only after it fails. Keep the computer connected to power on a laptop, and avoid filling the drive again while setup is running. If the drive is near capacity despite cleanup, record that fact with the error code; low space can coexist with a component or connectivity problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stabilize the connection

For a download that remains at 0% or repeatedly pauses, confirm that other sites load, reconnect to Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and restart the router if necessary. If you use a VPN, disconnect it for the retry; Microsoft lists VPN-related connectivity as a possible factor in some upgrade failures. A metered connection, captive-portal network, or security product that filters update traffic can also prevent a complete download. Make one change at a time so you know which condition affected the result.

Do not judge a stalled percentage too quickly if the network is slow. Check whether the download size or Windows Update activity changes after a reasonable wait. If it remains unchanged across a restart and a troubleshooter run, preserve the code and failed KB rather than repeatedly clicking Check for updates.

Choose the branch that matches the error code

Error code What Microsoft associates it with First action
0x8007000d Damaged update files or an update cache problem Run the troubleshooter; if it persists, reset the Windows Update download cache.
0x800705b4 The update took too long or was interrupted Check connectivity, restart, and retry without interrupting the device.
0x800f0922 Possible insufficient space, a component issue, update-server connectivity, or limited System Reserved space Check free space and connectivity; disconnect a VPN and retry before using advanced repair.
0xC1900101 An incompatible or problematic driver Update or temporarily remove the driver identified during setup, especially storage, chipset, network, or graphics drivers.
0x80070005 Access or permission problems Retry from an administrator account and check whether security software or policy is blocking the operation.
0x80248014 The Windows Update database or service path Run the troubleshooter and then reset the update components if the error returns.
0x80073712 A required installation file is damaged or missing Use DISM repair from an elevated command prompt, then retry the update.

These mappings are starting points, not guarantees. The same code can appear in more than one situation, and an Insider build can add channel-specific conditions.

Use the full code, including leading zeros and the letter format, when searching Microsoft Support. A partial message such as “Windows Update failed” is too broad to select a repair. Match the code to the stage as well: 0x800705b4 during a download calls for a different first check than a driver code appearing during restart.

Reset corrupted Windows Update files for 0x8007000d

Use this procedure only after the restart and troubleshooter have failed, and only if you are comfortable using an administrator command prompt. It removes downloaded update files, not your personal documents. Windows will download a fresh copy on the next check.

  1. Open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator.
  2. Stop the Windows Update service by entering net stop wuauserv.
  3. Open File Explorer and browse to C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution.
  4. Delete the files and folders inside SoftwareDistribution. Do not delete the parent Windows folder.
  5. Return to the elevated Command Prompt and run net start wuauserv.
  6. Restart Windows, open Settings > Windows Update, and select Check for updates.

If Windows reports that files are in use, the service did not stop. Close the message, verify the command prompt is elevated, stop the service again, and retry. A cache reset cannot repair a bad driver, a permissions failure, an unavailable build, or a damaged component store, so do not repeat it indefinitely.

Expect Windows Update to download the package again after the reset. That first retry can take longer because the previous partial files are gone. If the same code returns with the same KB, stop and compare the build announcement and channel eligibility before performing another reset.

Handle installation and restart failures differently

When installation stops between 51% and 99%

Leave the computer connected to power and wait if the disk-activity light or fan indicates that setup is still working. Do not force a shutdown during an active installation. If it returns to Windows and reports failure, check Update history for the code before trying another fix. At this stage, storage, drivers, damaged system files, and a pending restart are more informative clues than the percentage displayed on screen.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When it reaches 100% and then rolls back

A rollback means Windows could not complete the restart phase and restored the previous state. The generic “Undoing changes” message does not identify why. Record the failed KB or build and code from Update history. For 0xC1900101, investigate drivers; for 0x800f0922, check storage, System Reserved space, and connectivity; for 0x80073712, move to component repair.

When the PC is stuck at 0% downloading

Confirm the network, disconnect a VPN, restart, and run the troubleshooter. If the error is 0x8007000d, reset the cache as described above. If there is no error and the build is not offered at all, verify Insider enrollment and channel before assuming Windows Update is broken.

Repair system components for 0x80073712

Microsoft’s installation-error guidance treats 0x80073712 as a sign that a required file may be damaged or missing. Command-line repair requires administrator permission and should be used only if you are comfortable following elevated commands.

  1. Open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click the result, and choose Run as administrator.
  2. Run DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth.
  3. Wait for DISM to finish; do not close the window because progress can pause for several minutes.
  4. Restart Windows.
  5. Run Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates again.

If DISM reports that it cannot complete the repair, keep the error text and build number. Repeating the same command without addressing its reported source will not make an unavailable Insider package install.

Investigate driver, permission, and database errors

Driver conflict: 0xC1900101

Microsoft associates 0xC1900101 with an incompatible driver. In Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates, install appropriate driver updates when they are offered. Also check the PC or component manufacturer’s support package for the exact Windows version. Disconnect nonessential USB hardware, docks, and external storage during the retry. Do not remove a driver blindly; identify the device first and keep a way to reinstall it.

Permissions: 0x80070005

0x80070005 indicates an access or permission problem. Sign in with an account that has administrator rights, run the troubleshooter, and check whether endpoint-security software or an organization’s policy controls Windows Update. On a managed PC, a policy administrator may need to approve the Insider build. Changing folder permissions at random can create a larger security problem and is not a general fix.

Update database or service: 0x80248014

For 0x80248014, run the troubleshooter first. If it returns, use the cache-reset procedure rather than deleting unrelated system folders. Confirm that Windows Update and its dependent services are not disabled by a system-tuning utility or policy. If the error persists, preserve the code and failed KB for the build-specific support documentation.

Verify Insider enrollment, channel, and build

Insider availability is not identical across channels. A build can be staged, paused, superseded, or restricted to a particular channel, and servicing behavior can differ from a normal production release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program.
  2. Confirm that the intended Microsoft account is linked.
  3. Check the selected channel and compare it with the channel named in the current build announcement.
  4. Confirm your current Windows version and build by opening Settings > System > About and reviewing Windows specifications.
  5. If you changed enrollment settings, accept the agreements and restart; Microsoft’s enrollment steps use a restart to begin receiving the selected builds.

Do not switch channels merely because another machine received an update. First establish whether your channel and current build are eligible for that release. Leaving the program or changing channels can create a separate recovery decision and may not make the failed package install.

Compare the exact build number, not just “Windows 11” or “Dev.” Two devices in the same broad program can be on different starting builds, and a package may be offered only as an upgrade from particular builds. If Settings shows no offer, that is an availability question until the account, channel, current build, and latest announcement have been checked.

A narrow Insider servicing case: KB5040543 and WinPE

Microsoft’s July 29, 2024 release note for KB5040543 documents Error 800f0838 in a specific Windows Preinstallation Environment (WinPE) servicing scenario when the required MSU files are not together. The documented workaround is to place the relevant update files in the same folder and ensure that folder contains no other MSU files.

This is not a general Windows Update cache fix. Apply it only when your deployment matches that WinPE and standalone-MSU scenario and the release note identifies the same error. A normal Insider update delivered through Settings should be troubleshot through Windows Update, not by rearranging arbitrary packages.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When leaving Insider is the safer option

Microsoft describes Insider builds as “less stable than production builds, aren’t serviced, and eventually expire.” If repeated failures prevent normal use, decide whether you need the preview more than you need stability.

  • If the PC is already on a production build, use the supported option to stop receiving preview builds.
  • If it is on an Insider build that cannot return directly to production, Microsoft documents restoring the original operating system as a path out.
  • Back up wanted files before restoration. A rollback or clean restoration can remove applications, settings, and personal data depending on the route available to that build.

Do not start a restoration simply because one download is slow. Use the error code, build, and channel to establish that the problem is persistent or that the preview is no longer appropriate for the device.

If the update still will not install

Stop cycling through unrelated commands. Keep a short record containing the failed KB or build, Insider channel, Windows version, exact code, failure stage, available free space, and the steps already attempted. Consult Microsoft’s current support and release documentation for that exact build; Insider fixes can be tied to one channel or servicing package.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my Windows Insider update stuck at 0%?

Check the network first, disconnect a VPN, restart, and run the Windows Update troubleshooter. If Update history shows 0x8007000d, reset the SoftwareDistribution cache after those first-line steps. If no error appears and the build is not offered, verify your Insider account, channel, and current build.

What should I do when Windows Update is stuck at 100%?

Do not force the PC off while installation activity is continuing. If Windows eventually restarts or rolls back, open Update history and capture the failed KB or build and exact code. The percentage cannot distinguish a driver, storage, component, or restart failure.

Is “Undoing changes” a specific error?

No. It is a generic rollback message. Microsoft recommends finding the failed update and code in Update history because different underlying problems can produce the same wording.

How much free space does an Insider update need?

Microsoft’s general upgrade guidance lists 16 GB free for a 32-bit operating system and 20 GB for a 64-bit operating system. Treat those as general figures, not a guaranteed requirement for every preview package; temporary space needs can vary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I switch Insider channels to get the update?

Not automatically. Confirm the channel and build named in the current announcement first. Switching channels changes eligibility and can create a separate recovery issue; it will not fix a damaged cache, driver, permission, or component store problem.

Can I delete the Windows Update cache repeatedly?

Use the cache reset for the relevant file or database error, especially 0x8007000d, after restarting and running the troubleshooter. Repeating it cannot make an unavailable build appear or repair an incompatible driver, so preserve the code and investigate the matching branch instead.

What does error 0xC1900101 mean?

Microsoft associates it with an incompatible driver. Check offered and manufacturer driver updates, disconnect nonessential hardware, and identify the affected device before removing anything.

When is a USB drive useful?

Microsoft says a USB drive may be needed when a device with a small hard drive needs to update. It is a storage workaround, not a general answer to cache, permissions, driver, channel, or database errors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the KB5040543 workaround for every Insider update?

No. Microsoft’s July 29, 2024 note applies it to a specific WinPE servicing scenario with Error 800f0838. In that case, keep the required MSU files together in a folder containing no other MSU files. Do not apply that package arrangement to a normal Settings-delivered update without the same conditions.
