Windows error 10050 is WSAENETDOWN, which means “Network is down.” It appears when a socket operation encounters a dead network path. The failure can be in the Windows protocol stack, your network adapter, a cable or Wi‑Fi link, the router, or another local network service. Start with link and router checks, then reset Winsock, TCP/IP, DHCP, and DNS. Reinstall the adapter driver if the problem began after an update, and use Windows Network reset only as a last resort.

What error 10050 (WSAENETDOWN) means

WSAENETDOWN is a Windows Sockets (Winsock) error. Microsoft defines it as “Network is down” and describes the condition as “A socket operation encountered a dead network.” In practical terms, an application tried to use a network socket but Windows could not find a functioning path through the network subsystem or its associated service provider.

The number does not identify one guaranteed cause. A disabled adapter, a failed or filtered driver, a damaged Ethernet cable, a disconnected Wi‑Fi link, a router outage, a broken TCP/IP configuration, or a VPN and other network filter can all produce the same code. The application that reports it is often only the first program to notice that the underlying path has failed.

Because the code describes a failed path rather than a particular component, troubleshoot from the physical connection upward. Confirm whether the outage affects one computer or every device, repair the least disruptive layer first, and only then change advanced Windows settings.

Before changing Windows settings: identify the scope

Check Windows’ current network state

  1. Open Settings > Network & internet.
  2. Read the status shown for Wi‑Fi or Ethernet. Look for a disconnected adapter, “No internet,” or an adapter that is missing entirely.
  3. Select the connection and verify that the adapter is enabled. If Windows offers a reconnect option, use it and retry the application.
  4. Check the network icon in the taskbar. A disconnected or globe icon confirms that Windows does not currently have a usable route, although a connected icon does not guarantee that a particular service is reachable.

Write down whether the failure affects all programs or only one. Also note the connection type, the exact operation that returned 10050, and whether the problem started after a Windows, driver, VPN, security-software, or hardware change. Those details help distinguish a local stack problem from an application-specific or network-wide outage.

Test another device and the local network

Use a phone or another computer on the same Wi‑Fi or router. If every device is offline, the router, modem, service provider, or upstream network is more likely than this PC. If other devices work normally, concentrate on the affected computer and its adapter.

For Wi‑Fi, select the network in Settings > Network & internet > Wi‑Fi, choose Manage known networks, select the network, and choose Forget. Connect again and enter the wireless password. This removes the saved profile without resetting every adapter or network setting.

For Ethernet, unplug the cable from the computer and router, inspect both plugs, and reconnect them firmly. Try another known-good cable and, if the router has multiple LAN ports, another port. A loose connector or failed cable can leave the adapter present in Windows while the network path itself is dead.

Restart the modem and router

  1. Turn off or unplug the modem and router.
  2. Wait at least 30 seconds so their sessions and temporary state clear.
  3. Power the modem back on first and wait until its normal connection indicators settle.
  4. Power on the router, wait for its Wi‑Fi or LAN service to return, then reconnect the PC.

Retry the same action that produced 10050. If all devices remain offline after the restart, check the router’s own status lights and your provider’s outage information before making invasive changes to the PC.

Reset Winsock, TCP/IP, DHCP, and DNS

When the router and physical link work for other devices, reset the Windows networking components. The following Microsoft procedure resets Winsock, rebuilds the TCP/IP configuration, obtains a fresh DHCP lease, and clears the DNS resolver cache. Run every command in the order shown.

  1. Open the Start menu and type Command Prompt.
  2. Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  3. Enter each command, pressing Enter after each one:
netsh winsock reset
netsh int ip reset
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns

netsh winsock reset removes damaged or inconsistent Winsock catalog entries and schedules a clean catalog for the next restart. netsh int ip reset resets TCP/IP parameters. ipconfig /release gives up the current DHCP lease, while ipconfig /renew requests a new address from the router. ipconfig /flushdns empties the local DNS cache so old or incorrect name lookups are not reused.

Read the command output for an obvious access-denied or interface error. A successful reset can still require a restart: save your work, restart Windows, reconnect to Wi‑Fi if prompted, and test the failing application again. If the commands complete but only one application still reports 10050, the application, its proxy setting, or a product-specific network component may be at fault rather than the base Windows connection.

Check the adapter and its driver

Confirm that Windows sees and enables the adapter

  1. Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Network adapters.
  3. Find the Wi‑Fi or Ethernet device. A down-arrow icon means it is disabled; right-click it and choose Enable device.
  4. A yellow warning icon indicates a driver or device problem. Open Properties and read the message on the General tab.

If the adapter is absent, choose View > Show hidden devices. An absent device can indicate a hardware fault, a disabled firmware setting, or a missing driver. Check the computer manufacturer’s support documentation for the exact adapter model rather than installing a package intended for a different device.

Reinstall after an update-related failure

If connectivity stopped immediately after a Windows or driver update, reinstalling the adapter is a reasonable escalation. In Device Manager, right-click the affected adapter and select Uninstall device. If Windows displays a checkbox to remove the driver package, use it only when you have a compatible driver available locally or on removable media; otherwise leave the package so Windows can reuse it.

Restart the computer. Microsoft says Windows will look for the adapter and automatically install its driver during startup. Test the connection after sign-in. If Windows cannot reinstall it because the PC is offline, use another device to download the driver from the computer or adapter manufacturer, copy it to a USB drive, and install it on the affected PC. Keep a driver backup before uninstalling when the computer has no alternate connection.

When a VPN or filter is involved

VPN clients, firewall products, traffic monitors, and other network filters add components to the Windows networking path. If 10050 began after installing, updating, or enabling one, temporarily disconnect or disable that product using its normal controls and test again. Do not leave security protection disabled longer than needed to isolate the cause, and restore the product afterward. If the error disappears only when a filter is disabled, update or repair that product, or ask its publisher for a compatible configuration.

Use Windows Network reset only as a last resort

Network reset removes installed network adapters and their settings, then reinstalls the adapters after a restart. It is more disruptive than the command sequence or a single adapter reinstall, so reserve it for persistent failures that survive physical checks, the Winsock/TCP/IP reset, and driver troubleshooting.

Windows 11

  1. Open Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings.
  2. Select Network reset.
  3. Choose Reset now and confirm.
  4. Allow Windows to restart, then reconnect to Wi‑Fi and test the application.

Windows 10

  1. Open Settings > Network & internet > Status.
  2. Select Network reset.
  3. Choose Reset now, confirm, and let Windows restart.

Before selecting the button, record Wi‑Fi passwords, static IP details, proxy settings, and any special adapter configuration you need to restore. Network reset can require a VPN to be configured again. Hyper‑V virtual switches and similar virtual networking may also need to be recreated. Windows can change known networks to a Public profile after the reset, so review the profile and sharing settings before using local file or printer sharing.

Hardware isolation and replacement choices

Once software resets and driver checks are complete, isolate the physical interface. Compare the alternatives below and choose the least disruptive test that fits your equipment.

Situation Useful test or remedy What it tells you Effect on saved settings
Wi‑Fi fails but Ethernet works Reconnect to the wireless network, then test with a different Wi‑Fi network or hotspot Points toward the wireless adapter, its driver, or the original access point Forgetting one Wi‑Fi profile removes only that saved profile
Ethernet fails but Wi‑Fi works Try another cable and router LAN port Separates a cable/port fault from the built-in Ethernet adapter No Windows-wide reset is needed for a cable test
No usable built-in Ethernet port Use a compatible USB-to-Ethernet adapter Provides an independent wired interface for comparison Windows installs a separate adapter and may create a new network profile
Both interfaces fail after an update Reinstall or roll back the affected drivers; test with a manufacturer driver Suggests a software or driver-layer change rather than one damaged cable Driver changes normally preserve other saved networks
Every device loses connection Restart and inspect the modem/router; test another LAN port Makes the router, modem, or provider the primary suspect Changing Windows settings will not repair an upstream outage

A USB-to-Ethernet adapter is a legitimate workaround when a computer has no Ethernet port or its built-in port is unusable. A replacement Ethernet cable is sensible when the existing cable is loose, visibly damaged, or fails a swap test. Replace the router only when testing indicates the router itself is the failing component; a new router will not correct a damaged PC driver or a provider outage.

What to do when error 10050 returns

It returns immediately after every restart

  • Check whether the adapter is disabled in Device Manager.
  • Test another cable, router port, or Wi‑Fi network.
  • Review recently installed VPN, firewall, traffic-filter, Windows, and driver updates.
  • Use the adapter manufacturer’s current driver and keep an offline copy.

A repeatable failure at startup usually indicates that the interface, driver, or a network filter is failing before the application begins its connection attempt.

Only one program reports it

Verify that browsers or another network-dependent program work. If they do, inspect the affected application’s proxy, server address, account, and firewall permissions. Repair or update that application before resetting all of Windows networking. A socket error from one program does not prove that the entire network is down.

The error appears only on one network

Try the computer on a phone hotspot or another trusted network. If it works elsewhere, the original router, access-point settings, DHCP service, or local network policy is the likely boundary. If it fails on every network, return to the adapter, driver, VPN/filter, and Windows stack checks.

The computer has no internet after Network reset

Reconnect to Wi‑Fi, reinstall any required VPN, recreate a Hyper‑V virtual switch if you use one, and check whether Windows classified the network as Public. If a static address or custom DNS was previously required, re-enter those values from your documented settings. A reset removes configuration; it does not know which organization-specific settings to recreate.

Order of operations at a glance

  1. Check Settings > Network & internet and the taskbar status.
  2. Test another device on the same network.
  3. Forget and reconnect to Wi‑Fi, or reseat and replace the Ethernet cable.
  4. Restart the modem and router.
  5. Run the five administrator commands to reset Winsock, TCP/IP, DHCP, and DNS.
  6. Inspect Device Manager, enable the adapter, and reinstall its driver if needed.
  7. Isolate VPN or other network-filter software when the timing points to it.
  8. Use Windows Network reset only after documenting settings and understanding its side effects.
  9. Use a USB-to-Ethernet adapter or another cable to isolate suspected hardware.

This sequence moves from reversible observations to changes that remove configuration. It also keeps a router outage from being mistaken for a Windows fault and avoids using Network reset when a cable or disabled adapter is the real cause.
