How to Fix Windows Error 0x8007045D (Often Mistyped as 0x800704sd)

0x800704sd is not a valid Windows hexadecimal error code. The letter s cannot appear in a hexadecimal number, so the message is most likely a mistyped 0x8007045D. Windows uses that code for ERROR_IO_DEVICE: “The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.” It means a read or write request failed somewhere in the storage path—not that one particular Windows component is broken. Protect important files first, identify the operation and device involved, then work through the matching checks below.

What 0x800704sd probably means

Windows error codes written in hexadecimal use only the digits 0–9 and letters A–F. Because s is outside that range, 0x800704sd cannot be the literal code returned by Windows. Screenshots, handwritten notes, optical-character recognition, and similar sources commonly turn the final character of 0x8007045D into a lowercase “s.”

The likely code, 0x8007045D, maps to ERROR_IO_DEVICE. Windows attempted to read from or write to a device and the request did not complete. The “device” may be an internal drive, USB hard drive, flash drive, SD card, optical disc, USB cable, port, hub, enclosure, or installation media. The code does not identify which part failed.

Microsoft support examples show this error during file transfers, backups, DVD burning, USB-storage access, and other workflows. Therefore, a fix that helps a USB copy may not help a Windows upgrade or a disc-burning failure. The operation, the drive letter, and the physical connection determine the correct next step.

Protect data before attempting repairs

An I/O error can be an early sign that a storage device is becoming unreliable. Repeated repair commands and repeated writes can add stress or overwrite information that you still need. Treat the data as the priority.

  • If the device is readable, copy irreplaceable documents, photos, project files, and browser exports to a known-good internal drive or another trusted computer.
  • Copy the most important folders first. If a large transfer fails, work in smaller batches so one unreadable file does not stop everything.
  • Do not format, initialize, or delete partitions on the affected device while recovery is still important.
  • Stop if the drive makes repeated clicking, grinding, or spin-up and spin-down sounds. Software checks cannot repair mechanical damage.
  • Use a second destination with enough free space; copying files back to the same suspect device does not protect them.

CHKDSK can repair file-system structures in some situations, but it is not a data-recovery guarantee. Run it only after you have copied what you can and confirmed that the drive letter belongs to the intended device.

Confirm the exact message and the failing operation

Before changing settings, reproduce the failure once and record what Windows was doing. Note the complete code, wording, source path, destination path, and drive letters. These details separate a removable-media problem from an installer or update problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • File copy or move: record both the source and destination drives.
  • Backup: identify whether the error occurs while reading the source or writing the backup target.
  • Windows setup or upgrade: note whether the failure occurs while booting installation media, selecting a disk, or copying setup files.
  • Windows Update: record the update number if one is shown and whether the error appears during download, installation, or restart.
  • DVD or CD burning: note the disc type, burning application, and whether other blank discs work.
  • USB or SD-card access: record the device, adapter, enclosure, and drive letter.

If the supposed code came from a photo or transcription, check the original dialog. Look specifically for 0x8007045D, not 0x800704sd. Do not treat the malformed string as an official Windows code.

Isolate cables, ports, hubs, and the computer

A marginal connection can produce exactly the same symptom as a damaged drive. Isolation is safer than immediately changing the file system.

Seagate Portable 5TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0 for PC, Mac, PS4, & Xbox - 1-Year Rescue Service (STGX5000400), Black
  • Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.
  1. Close files and applications that are using the device. Use the taskbar’s “Safely Remove Hardware” option when Windows offers it.
  2. Unplug the device, wait a few seconds, and reconnect it firmly.
  3. Connect directly to a different USB port on the computer. Avoid front-panel ports and unpowered hubs during testing when a rear motherboard port is available.
  4. Try a different known-good cable if the device uses a detachable cable. A cable that powers a device can still fail during data transfer.
  5. If an adapter, dock, or enclosure is in the path, bypass it temporarily and connect the storage device by another supported method.
  6. Test the device on another computer. If it fails in the same way there, the storage device, enclosure, or cable is more suspicious than the original Windows installation.
  7. Test a known-good device on the original port. If multiple devices fail on one port, investigate that port or the computer’s USB controller.

Do not repeatedly reconnect a device that disappears, becomes extremely slow, or produces unusual sounds. Copy data while it is available and move to recovery or replacement decisions.

Run CHKDSK only when the device is accessible

For a transfer case in which the drive still appears in File Explorer, Microsoft support guidance uses CHKDSK with the /R option. /R looks for readable data in bad sectors and repairs file-system information where possible; it can take a long time and may place additional load on a failing disk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator.
  2. Confirm the correct drive letter in File Explorer. Substitute that letter for X: below; never copy the placeholder literally.
  3. Run:
    chkdsk /R X:
  4. If Windows says the volume is in use, read the prompt carefully. Schedule the check for the next restart only if the drive letter is definitely correct and your important files are already protected.
  5. Allow the scan to finish without disconnecting the device or powering off the computer.
  6. Restart if requested, then retry the original operation once.

If CHKDSK cannot open the volume, repeatedly reports I/O errors, or the drive disappears during the scan, stop escalating repair commands. That behavior points toward a connection, enclosure, or hardware problem rather than a simple directory inconsistency.

Fixes for USB drives, flash drives, and SD cards

When Windows assigns a drive letter but transfers fail

Copy a small, nonessential file in both directions after the cable and port tests. A device that can list folders but fails every read or write is not healthy enough for routine use. Run CHKDSK with the confirmed letter only after securing important data.

When the device does not appear in File Explorer

Open Disk Management by right-clicking Start and selecting Disk Management. Check whether the device appears without a drive letter, as offline, or as unallocated. Do not initialize or format it if it contains needed files. Assigning a drive letter may help a healthy volume, but it will not repair a failing device.

When an SD card uses an adapter

Test another adapter or a built-in card reader. A failed adapter can mimic a bad card. If the card is intermittently readable, copy data before trying any repair. Replace the card when errors follow it to multiple readers and computers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When replacement media is the practical answer

If a flash drive or card remains unreliable after cable, port, adapter, and computer tests, use new, reputable replacement media for transfers or recovery-media creation. A replacement USB 3.0 flash drive can provide a fresh destination or installation medium, but buying new media does not repair the original device or recover files that were never copied.

Fixes for an internal HDD or SSD

For an internal disk, check whether the error is limited to one application or affects File Explorer, backups, and startup. Back up data immediately if the disk is still readable. Persistent I/O errors, a disk that vanishes from firmware or Windows, repeated freezes during reads, or unusual mechanical noise warrant replacement planning or professional data recovery.

Do not assume that reinstalling Windows will solve a disk that cannot reliably read setup files. Installation media, cables, storage controllers, and the target disk can each be involved. Disconnect nonessential external devices, then retry setup with only the keyboard, mouse, display, and required installation media connected.

Fixes for Windows setup or an upgrade

During setup, the error can occur while Windows reads the installer USB/DVD or writes files to the destination disk. Microsoft’s general installation guidance recommends removing peripherals and includes CHKDSK among troubleshooting actions.

Seagate Portable 4TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0, 1-Year Rescue | Everyday HDD storage. Plug-and-play backup. Windows & macOS. Adobe CC trial included. 1-Year Warranty
  • Easily store and access 4TB of content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.
  1. Shut down and disconnect nonessential USB drives, card readers, printers, docks, and external disks.
  2. Reconnect only the installation media and the target keyboard and mouse. If possible, move the installer to a different USB port and recreate it on known-good media.
  3. Check the target disk’s physical connection if the computer is a desktop or serviceable laptop. A loose SATA or power connection can interrupt writes.
  4. Boot setup again and note whether the failure occurs while reading the installer or selecting the destination disk.
  5. If the target disk remains accessible from another Windows environment, back up files and run CHKDSK using its actual drive letter.
  6. Retry setup. If the same error follows the disk or installer media to another computer, replace the failing component rather than repeatedly restarting setup.

Do not delete partitions merely to make the error disappear when files on the disk still matter. Partition changes are destructive and do not fix a defective cable, controller, or storage device.

Fixes for Windows Update

0x8007045D is not exclusively a Windows Update code. If it appears during an update, first disconnect nonessential external storage and other peripherals, restart, and retry. Then run Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to System and select Troubleshoot.
  3. Choose Other troubleshooters.
  4. Find Windows Update and select Run.
  5. Apply any suggested action, restart, and check for updates again.

The troubleshooter runs diagnostics and attempts common fixes; it cannot repair a physically failing disk or removable device. If the update repeatedly fails while other disk operations also report I/O errors, investigate the storage path instead of resetting update components indefinitely.

Fixes for DVD or CD burning

Microsoft support lists several disc-burning causes: incompatible or defective blank media, a malfunctioning burner, outdated firmware, and an unsupported burn speed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Try a new blank disc from a different package or manufacturer. Do not reuse a disc that already failed.
  2. Choose a lower burn speed in the burning application instead of the maximum advertised speed.
  3. Test another supported disc type, such as a different recordable format, if your burner supports it.
  4. Check the drive manufacturer’s support information for firmware applicable to the exact model.
  5. Cleanly close other programs that may be accessing the optical drive and retry with a small test project.

If multiple known-good discs fail in the same drive while they burn successfully elsewhere, the burner or its connection is the likely point of failure. If only one disc fails, replace the media first.

How to decide whether the problem is software or hardware

Evidence More consistent with Next action
One cable or port fails; another works Cable, port, hub, or enclosure path Use the working connection and replace the failed part.
The device works on another computer Original computer, port, driver, or configuration Update system components and test another port; keep a backup.
The device fails on several computers Device, adapter, enclosure, or media Stop writes, recover data if possible, and replace or seek recovery.
Errors occur only with one optical-disc batch Incompatible or defective media Use different media and a slower burn speed.
Drive disappears, freezes reads, or makes unusual sounds Developing hardware failure Prioritize data recovery; do not keep running repair scans.
Only Windows Update fails and storage works normally Update workflow or configuration Disconnect peripherals and run the Windows Update troubleshooter.

These are diagnostic patterns, not guarantees. A failing cable and a failing drive can coexist, so retest after replacing one part.

When to stop troubleshooting and replace or recover

Escalate when the device repeatedly returns I/O errors after cable and port isolation, disappears from Windows, cannot be read by another computer, or makes abnormal sounds. For irreplaceable data, a professional recovery service is safer than repeated formatting, partition changes, or aggressive repair scans. If the data is backed up and the device is under warranty, replacement is usually the practical route.

Keep the original device powered off when it is not needed for recovery. Document the exact error, the computers and ports tested, and any sounds or symptoms; that information helps a recovery technician or hardware-support team.

Optional shortcut after the manual checks

Outbyte PC Repair is an optional Windows diagnostic and cleanup tool for issues such as broken system elements, invalid redirects, shared DLL problems, settings that increase CPU, RAM or disk load, temporary files, privacy settings, vulnerability checks and app-crash logging. It complements antivirus software and does not replace it, and no tool repairs every crash or a physically failing drive. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7; a free trial is available by category for at least two days before a paid subscription.

What the code does not tell you

  • It does not prove that Windows itself is corrupted.
  • It does not identify whether the source or destination failed during a copy.
  • It does not distinguish a bad disc from a bad optical drive.
  • It does not establish that data can be recovered with CHKDSK.
  • It does not justify formatting or replacing a disk before your files are protected.

The reliable approach is to correct the transcription, identify the operation, protect data, isolate the physical path, and then apply the device-specific remedy. If the error follows the device across ports and computers, treat that as a hardware or media problem and plan recovery or replacement.
