Windows error 0x8007045D means an input/output (I/O) device error: Windows could not complete a read or write request. The code does not identify one failed part. The source or destination drive, USB cable, port, hub, removable media, optical drive, driver, or Windows installation environment can be responsible. Start with reversible connection tests, protect important files, and only then run disk repairs.
What the “08007045d” message actually means
The title is commonly written with a missing x and an extra leading zero. The actionable Windows code is usually 0x8007045D. Microsoft defines it as: “The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.”

An I/O request is any operation that moves data between Windows and storage or another device. Reading a file from an internal disk, writing a backup to an external drive, loading installation files from a USB stick, or burning a disc all use this path. Because the message describes the failed operation rather than naming a component, replacing a drive immediately is not always the right first move.

Protect data before attempting repairs
If the drive still opens, copy irreplaceable documents, photos, or project files to a separate known-good location before running repair commands. Copy the most important material first rather than starting a large migration that could keep a failing device busy for hours.
Stop and change strategy if the same files fail repeatedly, the drive disappears and reappears, it becomes read-only, or it makes unusual noises. Do not format it, initialize it, delete partitions, or run destructive DiskPart commands while valuable data is at risk. Repeated writes can make recovery harder. Clone the device or use a professional data-recovery service before repair attempts when the data cannot be replaced.
Fix 0x8007045D during Windows installation or upgrade
1. Remove nonessential peripherals
Shut down the computer and disconnect flash drives, external hard disks, card readers, docks, printers, phones, and other USB hardware that Setup does not need. Leave only the keyboard, mouse, display, network connection if required, and the installation media. If the installation succeeds after this change, reconnect devices one at a time later to identify the trigger.

2. Check available space and drivers
Ensure the target Windows volume has the free space required by the edition and upgrade path you are using. Remove temporary files or move personal data only after confirming that the destination is healthy. Check for storage-controller, chipset, and other device-driver updates supplied for your computer model. A driver that cannot reliably communicate with the disk can produce the same I/O code as a physical fault.
3. Retry with a minimal hardware setup
Restart Windows, reconnect only the installation media, and run Setup again. Avoid leaving unrelated external disks attached while testing; Setup can select, scan, or write to a device you did not intend to use.
4. Check the target volume from an administrator console
If Setup still reports the error and you can open an administrator Command Prompt or Windows Terminal, identify the target volume’s drive letter in that environment first. Drive letters can differ from those used by normal Windows. Run:

chkdsk X: /f
Replace X: with the correct volume. The /f option asks CHKDSK to correct logical file-system errors. If Windows says the volume is in use, schedule the check for the next restart and allow it to complete.
5. Repair the Windows image when Setup’s environment is damaged
For an online Windows installation that has system-component corruption, an administrator can run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Let DISM finish, restart the computer, and retry Setup. DISM repairs the Windows image; it does not make a mechanically failing disk reliable. If the error returns at the same point with peripherals removed, treat the installation media, target storage, or storage path as suspect rather than repeatedly forcing upgrades.
Fix 0x8007045D while copying or backing up to an external drive
1. Use a different cable
Replace the cable with a known-good cable that matches the device’s connector and required data standard. A cable can provide enough power for a drive to light up while still causing intermittent read or write errors.
2. Move to another USB port
Disconnect the drive, restart if necessary, and connect it directly to a different port on the computer. Prefer a port built into the computer over a front-panel extension or an unpowered hub. On a desktop, a rear motherboard port is a useful comparison. Do not change several variables at once if you want to identify the failing link.
3. Bypass hubs and docks
Connect the external drive directly to the computer. Hubs and docks can introduce power, bandwidth, or compatibility problems. If the drive works directly but fails through the hub, use the direct connection for the transfer and troubleshoot the hub separately.

- The available storage capacity may vary.
4. Test whether the problem follows the device
Try the same drive and cable on another computer, then try a different known-good drive on the original computer and port. Interpret the pattern:
- If only one cable fails, replace the cable.
- If several devices fail on one port, avoid that port and investigate the computer’s USB hardware or drivers.
- If the error follows the external drive across ports and computers, the enclosure or drive is the leading suspect.
- If only one file fails while other files copy, the source file or a damaged area of the source volume may be involved.
5. Copy critical files before checking the disk
When the drive remains readable, copy irreplaceable data to a separate disk before running a scan. If the device is unstable, prioritize small, valuable files and stop when disconnects or unusual sounds begin.
6. Run CHKDSK only after data protection
Open Windows Terminal or Command Prompt as administrator and check the affected volume:
chkdsk X: /f
Use the correct drive letter. For a volume that is not showing signs of physical failure and needs a surface read as well as file-system correction, chkdsk X: /f /r performs a more extensive check and can take a long time. It is not a guaranteed cure for failing hardware, and stressing an unstable disk before recovery can be a poor trade-off. Do not run it blindly on a disk containing the only copy of important data.
Fix a USB drive that fails after sleep or suspend
Resume the computer, wait for Windows to finish returning to the desktop, then remove and reattach the USB device. If it is not detected or the error remains, restart Windows and reconnect it after the restart. This forces the USB device to be enumerated again.
A historical Microsoft troubleshooting case described waiting briefly after resume as a workaround for a re-enumeration problem. Timing and behavior vary by Windows build and hardware, so prefer current device-driver and firmware updates over disabling USB controllers or power-management features as a first response. If the device works after a restart but fails after every sleep cycle, document that pattern when checking the computer manufacturer’s driver and firmware releases.

Fix the error when reading or burning optical media
Use compatible, new media
A scratched, defective, or unsupported disc can trigger the same I/O message. Try a new disc type that the burner explicitly supports. For a disc that was already burned elsewhere, test another disc from the same set to distinguish a media problem from a drive problem.
Lower the burn speed
If the failure occurs during writing, select a slower burn speed supported by the media and burner. A speed setting that is technically available may still produce unreliable results with a particular batch of discs.
Check the burner’s documentation and firmware
Install firmware only from the drive or computer manufacturer’s instructions and use the exact model. Firmware cannot repair a physically failing optical mechanism, but it can address compatibility with media types and recording modes.
Run a structured diagnosis instead of guessing
Use this order because it starts with reversible, low-risk tests and ends with actions that can alter data:
- Record the context. Note the exact operation, file, drive letter, and whether the error appears immediately or after sustained activity.
- Protect important data. Copy irreplaceable files while the device is still readable.
- Reconnect cleanly. Remove and reattach the device, restart Windows, and disconnect unrelated peripherals.
- Change one connection variable. Test a different cable, direct port, or computer.
- Check drivers and firmware. Use the computer, storage-device, or optical-drive manufacturer’s current instructions for the exact model.
- Run CHKDSK in the correct administrator context. Confirm the drive letter and choose the least intensive check that fits the situation.
- Use DISM for Windows image problems. This is relevant to a damaged Windows installation, not a noisy or disconnecting disk.
- Escalate when hardware symptoms persist. Stop writes and arrange cloning or professional recovery for irreplaceable data.
How to read the symptoms
The error appears on one port only
Use another port and avoid the failing one. If multiple devices fail there, the computer-side port or its controller is more likely than the external drive.

The drive disconnects, becomes read-only, or makes unusual noises
Stop repeated retries and avoid formatting. These are stronger warning signs of unstable hardware or an enclosure problem than a one-time copy failure. Recover or clone the data before repair.
Only Windows Setup fails
Disconnect nonessential devices, check free space and drivers, and retry with a minimal setup. If ordinary Windows reads and writes the same disk reliably but Setup fails, concentrate on the installation environment and target-volume selection.
The same files fail every time
Copy other data first if possible. A repeatable failure at the same files can indicate damaged source sectors or file-system metadata. Preserve the original before using intensive checks.

When not to format, initialize, or use DiskPart
Formatting creates a new file system and can destroy the directory structure needed for recovery. Initializing a disk or deleting partitions is even more destructive. Those actions are appropriate only when you have confirmed that no needed data remains or you have a verified backup and are intentionally reusing the device. A command that says “clean” in DiskPart is destructive; do not use it as a generic fix for 0x8007045D.
If Windows cannot consistently detect the device, software repair may not be able to complete. A professional recovery service is the appropriate category for irreplaceable data and persistent hardware symptoms. Tell the service whether the device disconnects, whether it makes unusual sounds, and which connection tests you already performed.
What a successful fix looks like
After a connection or driver change, repeat the exact operation that originally failed: copy the same representative files, complete the same installation stage, resume from sleep, or read and burn a comparable disc. Confirm that the device remains connected during sustained activity, not merely that it appears in File Explorer. Keep a second copy of important data even after the error disappears; a one-time successful transfer does not prove that a marginal device is healthy.
