The code 0X800700422 has one hexadecimal digit too many for the usual eight-digit Windows format. In many cases, the intended code is 0x80070422, which means a required service—most often Windows Update—is disabled or stopped. Before changing anything, re-check the exact code in Settings, Windows Update, or the installer. Then back up important files and work through the service, troubleshooter, cache, and upgrade checks below.

First, verify which error you actually have

Windows hexadecimal errors normally contain eight digits after “0x.” The title’s 0X800700422 contains nine, so it may be a transcription or display mistake rather than a separate Microsoft error definition. Open the screen that reported the failure and copy the code exactly, including every zero.

  • 0x80070422: Microsoft associates this code with a service that cannot start because it is disabled. For update failures, Windows Update is the first service to check.
  • 0x8007000d: Microsoft associates this code with invalid or corrupted update data. Use the update troubleshooter, system-file checks, and a Windows Update component reset if that is the code you see.
  • 0x80240022: Microsoft describes this as all updates failing; antivirus protection of update folders such as SoftwareDistribution is a known cause.

Do not disable services or delete update files until you know which code is displayed. A one-character difference can point to a different repair path.

Back up before repairing Windows Update

Microsoft advises backing up personal files before trying update or upgrade remedies. Copy documents, photos, browser exports, and other irreplaceable data to an external drive or a trusted cloud location. If the machine is encrypted or managed by an employer, make sure you also have the recovery information and permission to perform the repair.

Run the Windows Update troubleshooter

The troubleshooter can restore common service and update settings without manually deleting files.

  1. Open Start and select Settings.
  2. In Windows 11, choose System, then Troubleshoot, and Other troubleshooters.
  3. Find Windows Update and select Run.
  4. Apply any recommended correction and note any service or component that the tool reports.
  5. Restart Windows if prompted, then open Windows Update and select Check for updates.

If the troubleshooter reports that a service is disabled, continue with the service check rather than repeatedly selecting “Check for updates.”

Enable and start the Windows Update service

For the likely code 0x80070422, restoring the Windows Update service is the central fix. You need an administrator account.

Use the Services console

  1. Press Windows key + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Find Windows Update in the list. Double-click it.
  3. If Startup type is Disabled, change it to Manual or Automatic. Manual lets Windows start the service when an update operation needs it; Automatic starts it with Windows. If your organization has a specific policy, follow that policy instead.
  4. Select Apply, then Start if the service is stopped. Select OK.
  5. Also check Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS). It must not be disabled because Windows uses it to transfer update files. Start it if it is stopped and your account has permission to do so.
  6. Restart the computer and try Windows Update again.

If the service immediately stops, an administrator policy, damaged components, security software, or another dependency may be involved. Do not repeatedly force-start it; proceed to the cache and diagnostic branches below.

Clear the SoftwareDistribution update cache

A damaged download or metadata file can prevent an otherwise enabled service from completing an update. Clearing the cache removes temporary update data; Windows recreates the folder contents. This procedure requires administrator rights and changes files, so close other programs first.

  1. Open the Services console with services.msc.
  2. Right-click Windows Update and select Stop. Wait until the status no longer says “Running.”
  3. Open File Explorer and enter C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution in the address bar.
  4. Select the contents of that folder and delete them. Delete the contents, not the SoftwareDistribution folder itself. If Windows says a file is in use, return to Services and confirm that Windows Update has stopped; a restart may be needed before trying again.
  5. Return to Services, right-click Windows Update, and select Start.
  6. Restart Windows, open Settings > Windows Update, and select Check for updates.

Windows will download fresh update files after the reset. The first scan can take longer because the local cache has been rebuilt.

Check upgrade prerequisites

If the code appears during a feature upgrade rather than a routine update, confirm these prerequisites before retrying:

  • Stable internet: Use a reliable connection and avoid interrupting the download. If possible, temporarily avoid congested or metered networks.
  • Administrator access: Sign in with an account allowed to install updates and change services.
  • Date and time: In Settings > Time & language > Date & time, enable automatic time and verify the time zone. An incorrect clock can interfere with update validation.
  • Drivers: Bring third-party device drivers up to date through the hardware maker or Windows Update before retrying an upgrade.
  • Free storage: Microsoft’s current upgrade guidance calls for at least 16 GB free for a 32-bit upgrade or 20 GB for a 64-bit upgrade. These are minimum free-space figures, not the total disk capacity.

To check storage, open Settings > System > Storage. Keep additional headroom when possible because Windows may need temporary space while unpacking an upgrade.

Disconnect hardware and review security software

Microsoft’s upgrade guidance recommends removing nonessential external hardware. Shut down the PC, disconnect unnecessary USB drives, docks, printers, cameras, card readers, and other peripherals, then retry with only the keyboard, mouse, display, and network connection attached. Reconnect devices after the upgrade succeeds, one at a time, so a problematic device can be identified.

Third-party antivirus can also interfere with setup when it scans or locks update folders. If Microsoft’s guidance for your upgrade specifically recommends disabling or removing non-Microsoft antivirus, use the product’s documented temporary-disable or uninstall procedure, complete the update, restart, and immediately restore protection. Do not leave the computer unprotected longer than necessary, and do not treat disabling antivirus as a general fix for every update error.

Restart and retry in the correct order

A restart can apply a service change or a partially installed update. Use this sequence after making a repair:

  1. Save work and restart Windows.
  2. Open Settings > Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates and allow the scan and installation to finish without shutting down.
  4. If Windows requests another restart, choose Restart now and let the process complete.

If the same code returns, record the exact code and the stage at which it appears. That information determines whether to follow the 0x80070422 service branch or one of the alternate-code branches.

Diagnostic branch: the code is 0x8007000d

When the verified code is 0x8007000d, Microsoft associates it with invalid or corrupted update data rather than a disabled service. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter first, then use Windows’ built-in system-file repair tools from an elevated terminal.

  1. Open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
  2. Run sfc /scannow and wait for verification to reach 100 percent.
  3. If SFC reports that it could not repair files, run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth. Keep the computer connected to the internet while DISM obtains replacement component data.
  4. Restart Windows and run sfc /scannow once more if DISM reports that the restore completed.
  5. Retry Windows Update. If the error persists, reset Windows Update components using Microsoft’s documented procedure rather than deleting unrelated system folders.

Diagnostic branch: the code is 0x80240022

For 0x80240022, Microsoft describes a condition in which all updates fail and notes that antivirus protection of folders such as SoftwareDistribution is a common cause. Check the antivirus event or quarantine history for a blocked update file. Microsoft’s CBS.log analysis can identify the protected object. Use that evidence before creating exclusions; broad exclusions weaken protection and may not address the actual file being blocked.

Which repair should you try first?

Repair Risk Permissions Restart What changes
Windows Update troubleshooter Low; uses Windows’ guided corrections Administrator access may be requested Sometimes Service and update settings
Enable or start Windows Update Low when restoring the documented service state Administrator account Recommended after the change Service state and startup setting
Clear SoftwareDistribution contents Moderate; removes cached update files Administrator account Recommended Temporary update files and metadata
SFC and DISM for 0x8007000d Moderate; repairs Windows components Elevated terminal Yes Protected system files and component store
Upgrade cleanup Moderate; disconnects hardware and may temporarily disable third-party antivirus Administrator access Usually Setup environment and security software state

Start with the least invasive step that matches the verified code. For 0x80070422, that means the troubleshooter and Windows Update service. Move to cache deletion only after the service can start, and use SFC/DISM when the code is 0x8007000d or Windows reports system-file corruption.

Do you need a USB flash drive?

No. The service, troubleshooter, cache-reset, storage, and restart procedures use the existing Windows installation and do not require a USB drive. A USB flash drive is useful only if you deliberately create installation media, need to perform an offline installation, or want another place to store a backup. Do not use a removable drive as a substitute for verifying the error code or repairing a disabled Windows Update service.

When the code still appears

Stop before making more invasive changes if the error survives the matching branch. Confirm the code again in the original error dialog, note whether it occurs during a cumulative update or a feature upgrade, and check whether the Windows Update service remains enabled after reboot. On a work or school PC, an administrator policy may intentionally disable updates; contact the organization rather than overriding that policy. If the machine cannot boot normally after an attempted upgrade, use Windows recovery options and your file backup before repeating the installation.

As an optional shortcut after the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues, tune settings that contribute to CPU, RAM, or disk load, clean temporary and cache files, check Windows settings and missing updates, and provide an app-crash log; it runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7 and offers a free trial by category for at least two days before a subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.
