Windows error 0x80070422 means the Windows Update service is disabled or stopped. The usual fix is to open the Services console, change Windows Update’s startup type to Automatic, start the service, restart the computer, and check for updates again. If that does not work, run Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter and then reset the update cache using the documented SoftwareDistribution procedure. These repairs address the local service problem; they do not extend support for an operating system that has reached its end-of-support date.

What error 0x80070422 means

Microsoft identifies 0x80070422 as a Windows Update service problem. In Windows error terminology, it maps to ERROR_SERVICE_DISABLED: the service required to search for, download, or install updates is not running because it has been disabled or stopped.

The code can appear when you select Check for updates, while installing a cumulative update, or during a Windows upgrade or installation. It does not, by itself, prove that Windows is infected, that a system file is missing, or that your hardware has failed. Start with the service configuration rather than downloading replacement DLL files or changing the registry.

Check the support status of your Windows edition

A successful service repair and an operating system’s support status are separate issues. Microsoft says support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free software updates through Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. Turning the service back on can remove 0x80070422 on a Windows 10 computer, but it cannot restore the ended support program.

If you are on Windows 10, identify whether your device can move to a supported Windows release and follow Microsoft’s current upgrade requirements. If you are on Windows 11 or another supported edition, continue with the repairs below.

Fix 0x80070422 by enabling Windows Update

This is Microsoft’s primary procedure and should be attempted before any cache reset.

  1. Sign in with an account that can change system services. Save open work.
  2. Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog.
  3. Enter services.msc and press Enter. Approve the User Account Control prompt if Windows displays one.
  4. In the Services list, locate Windows Update. The list is alphabetical; selecting the list and typing the service name can make it easier to find.
  5. Double-click Windows Update to open its Properties window.
  6. Open the Startup type menu and choose Automatic.
  7. Look at Service status. If it says Stopped, select Start. If it is already running, leave it running.
  8. Select Apply, then OK to save the change.
  9. Restart the computer. After signing in, open Settings, choose Windows Update (or Update & Security > Windows Update on older Windows 10 builds), and select Check for updates.

A normal result is that Windows Update starts without the code and begins checking for updates. The first check after a service change can take longer than usual. Let an update finish or reboot only when Windows asks you to.

If the Start button is unavailable

If Start is greyed out, you may not have the required permissions, or an administrator policy may control the service. Sign in with an administrator account if appropriate. On a work or school device, do not bypass the policy; ask the organization’s IT administrator to confirm whether Windows Update is intentionally managed.

If the service starts and then stops

Open the Windows Update Properties window again and confirm that the startup type remained Automatic. If it changes back to Disabled or the service stops immediately, a policy, management tool, or another configuration issue is overriding the setting. Repeatedly forcing the service or editing registry values can damage update configuration, so move to the troubleshooter and, for a managed device, escalate to the administrator.

Run the Windows Update troubleshooter

The troubleshooter checks common update-service and configuration conditions without requiring you to manually alter several settings.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
  3. Find Windows Update and select Run.
  4. Follow the on-screen recommendations and allow the troubleshooter to apply a repair when it offers one.
  5. Restart Windows if requested, then return to Windows Update and select Check for updates.

On some Windows 10 interfaces, the path is shown under Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot. The exact labels vary by Windows version, but the tool is still the Windows Update troubleshooter. Record any message it reports; a policy or permissions message is useful evidence when you contact an administrator or Microsoft support.

Reset the Windows Update cache

A damaged download cache can prevent the service from completing an update even after the service is enabled. Microsoft’s documented reset uses the C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution folder. This changes downloaded update files; it does not remove your personal documents.

  1. Open services.msc again and locate Windows Update.
  2. Open its Properties and select Stop. Wait until the status changes to stopped before continuing.
  3. Open File Explorer and enter C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution in the address bar.
  4. Select the contents of that folder and delete them. Delete the contents, not the SoftwareDistribution folder itself. Windows may request administrator approval.
  5. Close File Explorer, return to the Windows Update Properties window, and select Start. Confirm that the startup type is still Automatic, then select Apply and OK.
  6. Restart the computer and try Windows Update again.

If a file says it is in use, verify that Windows Update is stopped and close other update-related windows before retrying. Do not delete unrelated folders under C:Windows. If you are not certain which items belong to SoftwareDistribution, stop and use Microsoft’s current cache-reset instructions or ask an administrator rather than deleting broadly.

When 0x80070422 appears during an upgrade or installation

The same service condition can interrupt an in-place upgrade or a Windows installation. Before launching the upgrade again:

  • Enable Windows Update and start it manually in services.msc.
  • Run the Windows Update troubleshooter.
  • If the error persists, reset the SoftwareDistribution contents using the procedure above.
  • Restart the computer, then retry the upgrade or installation from the official Windows setup path.

Microsoft’s upgrade guidance also refers to resetting Windows Update components when this code appears. Component reset instructions can change with the Windows release, so use the current Microsoft procedure for your edition instead of copying a registry script or an unverified batch file from a forum.

Choose the least invasive repair first

Method What it changes Permissions Effect on downloaded update data Best use
Enable and start Windows Update Service startup type and running state Administrator-level service access may be required None First response to 0x80070422
Windows Update troubleshooter Checks and may correct common update settings Usually requires permission to apply repairs Normally none Service appears correct but updates still fail
SoftwareDistribution cache reset Removes downloaded update-cache contents Administrator approval is commonly required Existing downloaded update files are removed and may need to download again Cache corruption is suspected after the first two methods
Administrator or Microsoft support escalation Policy, managed configuration, or complex component issues Handled by the device administrator or support channel Depends on the approved repair Startup type is locked, reverts immediately, or the device is managed

Why the service may be disabled

Several situations can produce the same code:

  • Manual or accidental configuration: Windows Update was set to Disabled or stopped.
  • Organizational policy: An employer or school controls update timing and service settings.
  • Interrupted update activity: A failed restart or installation left the service or its cache in an unusable state.
  • Damaged update cache: Files in SoftwareDistribution are incomplete or inconsistent.

The error code alone cannot identify which of these applies. The service Properties window and the troubleshooter’s result provide more useful evidence than a guess based only on when the message appeared.

What not to do

  • Do not download random DLL files. Replacing a system file from an unknown site can introduce malware or an incompatible version and does not address a disabled service.
  • Do not run registry cleaners as a first response. They can remove settings that Windows or another program needs, while Microsoft’s documented repair starts with the service and troubleshooter.
  • Do not disable antivirus or other security controls just to make Windows Update run. If a security product is genuinely blocking an update, use its documented support process or contact the administrator instead of leaving protection disabled.
  • Do not force registry changes when a policy controls the service. A forced change may be reversed automatically and can conflict with the organization’s management settings.

Use these checks if the error remains

  1. Reopen services.msc and verify that Windows Update still shows Automatic and Running after a reboot.
  2. Confirm that you are troubleshooting the correct Windows installation, especially if the computer has multiple boot entries or was recently upgraded.
  3. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter again only if it reports a specific unresolved item; repeating it without addressing that item is unlikely to add information.
  4. Check whether the device is enrolled in work or school management. Ask the administrator whether updates are intentionally disabled or scheduled centrally.
  5. For an upgrade or installation, use Microsoft’s current guidance for your Windows release and preserve any error details, update history entries, and restart prompts.

If the service is locked by policy, disables itself immediately, or the same failure continues after the documented cache reset, escalate to the device administrator or Microsoft support. The available Microsoft guidance does not guarantee a fix for every policy-specific, hardware-specific, or damaged-installation cause.

Optional shortcut after the manual repairs

As an optional shortcut, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements, invalid redirects, and shared DLL files; it also offers settings tweaks, temporary and cache cleanup, privacy and vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, file shredding, and an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7, with a free trial by category for at least two days followed by a paid subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.

Bottom line

For 0x80070422, set Windows Update to Automatic and start it in services.msc, restart, and check for updates. Then use the Windows Update troubleshooter and the documented SoftwareDistribution cache reset if necessary. Treat a locked or repeatedly disabled service as a policy or support issue, and remember that enabling Windows Update does not reinstate Windows 10 support after October 14, 2025.
