0x800070422 is probably not a genuine Windows error code. Microsoft documents 0x80070422, which means the Windows Update service is stopped or disabled. If the longer code appeared in a browser pop-up that claimed your PC had a virus or told you to call a phone number, treat it as scareware instead: close the page, do not call, and do not give anyone remote access.
First, identify which message you saw
The location and wording of the message determine the safe response. Microsoft’s Windows error documentation lists 0x80070422, not 0x800070422. The extra zero in the title’s code is significant: it is not simply another spelling of the documented Windows Update error.

A Microsoft Q&A report dated July 1, 2016 describes the longer 0x800070422 string in a browser message that alleged a virus had been downloaded and urged the reader to call support. The accepted response associated that behavior with a known scam pattern. That report does not establish that every appearance of the string is malicious, so use the location and wording as your first test.

What Microsoft’s 0x80070422 code means
Microsoft identifies 0x80070422 as ERROR_SERVICE_DISABLED. Its technical description is: “This issue occurs when the Windows Update service stops working or isn’t running.” In practical terms, Windows cannot complete an update check because the service responsible for it is not available. The code does not by itself say that a system file is missing, that a virus is present, or that a hardware component has failed.

The usual first repair is to enable the service in the Services console. You need an administrator account, and changing the service state may be blocked on a work or school computer by organization policy. If the setting immediately reverts, contact the administrator rather than repeatedly changing it.
Manual repair for the genuine Windows Update error
1. Open the Services console
- Press Win + R to open the Run dialog.
- Type
services.mscand press Enter. - If Windows asks for administrator approval, choose Yes. The Services window lists background services alphabetically.
2. Set Windows Update to start automatically
- Scroll to Windows Update and double-click it to open Properties.
- Open the Startup type menu and select Automatic.
- Look at Service status. If it says Stopped, click Start. If it is already running, leave the service running.
- Click Apply, then OK to save the setting.
Do not disable other services at random while troubleshooting. The documented error specifically points to Windows Update being stopped or disabled, so begin with that service instead of changing unrelated startup settings.

3. Restart Windows and check for updates
- Restart the computer from the Start menu. A restart ensures that the changed service configuration is loaded in a fresh session.
- After signing in, open Windows Update in Settings and select Check for updates (or the equivalent update-check button shown by your Windows edition).
- Allow the check to finish. If updates download and install normally, no further repair is required.
If the same code returns, note whether the Windows Update service is still set to Automatic and whether its status is running. A service that stops again points to a component or configuration problem rather than a simple one-time setting change.

Run Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter
- Open Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run.
- Follow the prompts, allow the troubleshooter to apply any suggested correction, and restart if Windows requests it.
- Return to Windows Update and check again.
The exact Settings labels can vary by Windows version. Use the Windows Update troubleshooter entry supplied by your edition rather than downloading an unofficial “fix” from a pop-up or search result.

Clear the Windows Update download cache
A damaged or incomplete update cache can keep the error coming back after the service is enabled. Microsoft documents clearing the contents of the SoftwareDistribution folder. This procedure requires administrator permission:
- Open
services.mscagain. - Open Windows Update and click Stop. Wait for the service status to change before continuing.
- In File Explorer, enter
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionin the address bar. - Delete the contents of that folder. Do not delete the parent
SoftwareDistributionfolder itself. - Return to Services, open Windows Update, and click Start.
- Restart the PC and run Windows Update again.
Windows will recreate the needed cache data. If a file cannot be deleted because another process still has it open, confirm that Windows Update is stopped, close File Explorer windows showing that folder, and try again. Do not delete unrelated folders under C:Windows.

When the problem occurs during an upgrade or installation
For upgrade and installation failures, Microsoft recommends enabling or manually starting Windows Update and resetting Windows Update components. Start with the Services procedure above, then use the troubleshooter and cache-clearing steps. Record the exact code, the point at which setup fails, and whether the service remains running after a restart. Those details help an administrator or Microsoft support distinguish a disabled service from a broader component-reset problem.
The repair does not change the Windows edition or its support status. It only restores the update mechanism that the code identifies.

If the exact 0x800070422 string appeared in a browser
A browser page cannot create a Microsoft Windows Update diagnostic event merely by displaying a number. A page that says a virus was downloaded, uses urgent audio or visual warnings, or demands a phone call is using pressure rather than providing a normal Windows repair path.
Close the scam page safely
- Do not call the number shown in the message.
- Do not grant the caller remote-control access, read out verification codes, or install software at the caller’s direction.
- Close the browser tab or window. If it will not close normally, use Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager and end the unresponsive browser process, then reopen the browser without restoring the suspicious page.
- Run a security scan from a security product you already trust. A scan is a sensible precaution after a deceptive page, but the pop-up itself is not proof that malware was downloaded.
If you entered a password or payment information into the page, change the affected password from a clean device and contact the relevant service provider or card issuer. If you allowed remote access, disconnect the computer from the network and seek qualified incident-response help before using it for sensitive accounts.
Do not “fix” a browser warning by changing Windows services
Enabling Windows Update is appropriate for the documented 0x80070422 error in Settings. It is not a response to a browser scare page. Conversely, deleting the update cache will not remove a malicious browser notification. Keep the two situations separate: repair the service when Windows Update reports the documented code, and handle the browser message as a potential scam.

Microsoft’s upgrade-error guidance states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Fixing a disabled Windows Update service can resolve the immediate 0x80070422 condition, but it does not extend the operating system’s support lifecycle. If the affected PC still runs Windows 10, treat the service repair and the longer-term upgrade decision as separate tasks, and check that the device meets the requirements for the Windows version you plan to use.

- The service will not start or keeps stopping: document the service status and exact message, then involve the PC administrator or Microsoft support; repeated blind changes can make diagnosis harder.
- Windows 10 device: remember that Microsoft lists October 14, 2025 as the end of Windows 10 support and plan the supported upgrade separately from this immediate repair.
The important distinction is the extra zero and the source of the message. Microsoft’s documented repair applies to 0x80070422 reported by Windows itself; a browser scare page using 0x800070422 should be handled as a security warning, not as a Windows Update diagnosis.
