Do not troubleshoot 0x8007042 as if it were a complete Windows error. The label has only seven hexadecimal digits after 0x, so it can be a shortened version of several different codes. The correct repair depends on the complete code and the Windows component showing it. For example, 0x80070422 usually means the Windows Update service is disabled or stopped, while 0x8007042B 0x4000D identifies a Windows Setup failure caused by another background process.
Copy the entire message, including any second code such as 0x4000D, and note whether it appears in Windows Update, Windows Setup, Firewall, Microsoft Store, or account sign-in. Then follow the matching branch below. No physical product is required for the documented repairs.

Why 0x8007042 is not enough information
Windows error labels are normally represented as complete hexadecimal values. The text 0x8007042 is incomplete, and search results and user reports use that shortened form for unrelated problems. Treating it as one universal HRESULT can send you to the wrong service, cache, or security setting.

The most important distinction is the final character or suffix. 0x80070422 ends in 22 and is associated with a disabled Windows Update service. 0x8007042B 0x4000D includes an additional setup code and points to an interrupted Windows upgrade. Similar-looking text has also been reported around Windows Firewall, Microsoft Store, and Microsoft account sign-in. Those contexts do not establish that the Windows Update service is at fault.

Capture the complete code and context
- Copy the entire dialog. Include every character after
0x, spaces, and any second value such as0x4000D. A screenshot is useful, but transcribe the code so that characters such asB,8, and0are not confused. - Record where it appears. Write down whether the message is in Settings > Windows Update, during Windows Setup or an upgrade, while opening Firewall, inside Microsoft Store, or during account sign-in.
- Note what you were doing. Starting an update service, installing an app, signing in, or running an upgrade provides diagnostic context that the shortened label lacks.
- Check Windows Update history if the problem followed an update. Open Settings, select Windows Update, and open Update history. Record the failed update and its complete error text.
- Do not mix branches. If the full code is not confirmed, do not delete the Windows Update cache or change Firewall settings merely because a search result used the same shortened label.

Fix 0x80070422 in Windows Update
This branch applies only when the complete code is 0x80070422 and the message is connected to Windows Update. The sequence starts with Microsoft’s built-in diagnostics, then repairs the service, and finally rebuilds cached update files.
1. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
Save open work and connect the computer to power if it is a laptop. In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, find Windows Update, and select Run. In Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, choose Windows Update, and select Run the troubleshooter.
Allow the diagnostic process to complete and apply any repair it offers. Restart the computer when prompted, then return to Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. If the same code appears, continue with the service check rather than repeatedly running the troubleshooter.

2. Enable and start the Windows Update service
- Press
Windows key + R, typeservices.msc, and press Enter. Approve the administrator prompt if one appears. - In the Services list, locate Windows Update. Double-click it to open its properties.
- Inspect Service status. If it is stopped, select Start.
- Check Startup type. Set it to an enabled mode rather than Disabled, then select Apply and OK. Use the startup mode already prescribed by your organization if this is a managed computer.
- Close Services and restart Windows.
If Start is unavailable, the service is missing, or Windows reports an access error, sign in with an administrator account or contact the person who manages the computer. Do not change unrelated services or registry values to compensate for a permissions problem.
3. Clear the Windows Update cache
A stopped service can leave damaged or incomplete files in the update cache. Rebuild it only after confirming that the full code is 0x80070422 and the service step did not solve the problem.
- Open
services.mscagain, select Windows Update, and choose Stop. Leave the Services window open or remember the service name. - Open File Explorer and enter
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionin the address bar. Administrator permission may be required. - Delete the contents of this folder, including temporary files and subfolders. Do not delete the
SoftwareDistributionfolder itself. If Windows says a file is in use, confirm that Windows Update is stopped and restart the computer before trying again. - Return to Services, open Windows Update, and select Start.
- Restart Windows once more.
Clearing this folder removes the local update cache; Windows can create a new cache when it checks for updates. It does not remove your personal documents.

4. Check for updates and verify the result
Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. A successful repair lets the scan begin instead of immediately reporting that the service is disabled. Allow the update to download and install, then review Update history for the result.
If 0x80070422 returns
- Reopen
services.mscand confirm that Windows Update is not set back to Disabled. - Check whether security software or an organization policy is deliberately controlling Windows Update. On a work or school computer, the administrator may have disabled the service.
- Run the troubleshooter again only after confirming that the service can start. A troubleshooter cannot repair a policy that immediately disables the service.
- Capture the new complete message and the failed update number. If the code changes, use the new code rather than assuming it is still
0x80070422.
Fix 0x8007042B 0x4000D during Windows Setup
The complete value 0x8007042B 0x4000D is a different problem from 0x80070422. Windows Setup terminated unexpectedly because another process was running in the background. Microsoft’s recommended direction is a clean boot and addressing interference from third-party antivirus or antispyware software.
1. Prepare for a clean boot
Save your work and make sure you can restart the computer. A clean boot temporarily prevents non-Microsoft services and startup programs from loading; it does not permanently remove them.

- Press
Windows key + R, typemsconfig, and press Enter. - Open the Services tab and select Hide all Microsoft services. This checkbox is important: disabling Microsoft services can make Windows unstable.
- Select Disable all to turn off the remaining third-party services, then select Apply.
- Open the Startup tab and select Open Task Manager. Disable enabled third-party startup items, close Task Manager, and select OK in System Configuration.
- Restart the computer.
2. Address security-software interference
Third-party antivirus or antispyware can terminate an upgrade process. Follow the product maker’s documented procedure to temporarily disable or uninstall the interfering component before running Setup. Keep the interruption as short as possible, disconnect from untrusted networks while protection is paused, and restore protection immediately after the upgrade or after testing shows that it was not the cause.
Do not leave a computer in a clean-boot or unprotected state as a permanent configuration. The purpose is isolation: determine whether Setup completes when non-Microsoft background processes are absent.
3. Run Setup again and restore normal startup
- With the clean boot active, run Windows Setup or the upgrade again.
- If Setup completes, open
msconfig, choose Normal startup on the General tab, select Apply, and restart. - If Setup fails again with the same code, record the complete message and the exact stage at which it stopped. Re-enable services in groups rather than all at once to identify the interfering program, then contact that program’s support channel for a compatible version or configuration.
A clean boot is not a repair for Windows Update service-disabled errors. Use it for the setup code that includes the 0x4000D suffix or for evidence that a background process is terminating Setup.

When the message appears in Firewall, Microsoft Store, or sign-in
A shortened 0x8007042 label in these components is insufficient to identify a cause. The same-looking text can represent a different full code, service, permission, or account condition. Applying the Windows Update cache procedure in these situations can waste time and may remove useful diagnostic context.
- Copy the complete code and the exact dialog wording.
- Record the component and the action that triggered it, such as opening Windows Firewall, installing a Store app, or entering account credentials.
- Check whether the message includes a second hexadecimal value, a component name, or a link to a log.
- Use the complete value and component together when selecting the next repair. If you cannot obtain them, ask the device administrator or the software publisher for a component-specific procedure instead of guessing.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming every 0x8007042 label means Windows Update. The missing final digit or suffix can change the diagnosis completely.
- Deleting the cache while Windows Update is running. Stop the service first, clear only the contents of
C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution, and start the service again afterward. - Using registry edits as a first step. The documented first-line repair for
0x80070422is the troubleshooter, the Windows Update service, and update-component reset—not arbitrary registry changes. - Disabling IPv6 or applying generic registry-cleaner advice. These are not Microsoft’s primary remedies for the service-disabled error and can introduce unrelated networking or system problems.
- Leaving a clean boot enabled. Restore normal startup after testing so that required third-party services and startup programs run normally.
- Repeating a fix after the code changes. Treat a new full code as new evidence and recapture the complete message.
How to tell whether the repair worked
For the Windows Update branch, the service should start in Services, Settings should be able to check for updates, and Update history should show the next attempt rather than an immediate service-disabled message. For the Windows Setup branch, the upgrade should proceed past the stage where it previously stopped while the clean boot is active. Afterward, restore normal startup and confirm that security software is running.
If neither result occurs, preserve the complete code, the component name, and the steps already attempted. That information distinguishes a disabled service from a background-process conflict and prevents a support technician from repeating an unrelated procedure.
