Windows error 0x80080005 usually means that Windows could not access something it needed to download or install. Microsoft describes the code as an “access denied” condition; corrupted system files, damaged update data, permissions, security software, or an incorrect configuration can all be involved. It is not normally a simple browser-download problem.

Work through the remedies in order. Start with the low-risk checks and Windows Update troubleshooter, then repair system files, reset update components, check security software, and finally use Microsoft Update Catalog or Windows installation media if the failure persists.

What error 0x80080005 means

The hexadecimal code is commonly shown as 0x80080005. A title or screenshot that says “0X8008005” is usually missing one zero; verify the complete code in Windows Update, the Microsoft Store, or the related error dialog before applying a fix. Similar-looking Windows codes can have different causes.

Microsoft associates 0x80080005 with corrupted files, permission problems, and incorrect system configuration. A Microsoft employee has described it as “access denied.” In practical terms, Windows may be able to contact the update service and download packages, but fail when it tries to stage, verify, or install them.

The same code can appear in different situations. Windows Update is the most common context, but readers also report download failures in the Microsoft Store. Note the exact screen, the update or app name, and whether the error occurs during download, installation, or the restart phase. The procedures below target Windows servicing and Windows Update; a Store-only problem may need separate app troubleshooting after the operating-system checks are complete.

Before changing Windows Update

Do these checks first. They require little technical knowledge and avoid changing update databases before you know whether the problem is temporary.

  1. Write down the complete code. Capture a screenshot or copy the full message, including any update identification number.
  2. Restart Windows. A restart clears a pending servicing operation and reloads update services.
  3. Use reliable power and internet. On a laptop, connect the charger. Use a stable network and avoid starting the update while switching between connections.
  4. Confirm administrator access. Sign in with an account that can approve system changes. If Windows asks for administrator credentials during a repair, provide them only if you recognize the prompt.
  5. Remove unnecessary hardware. Shut down and disconnect docks, external drives, printers, hubs, and other devices that are not needed for the update. Leave the keyboard, mouse, display, and network connection attached.
  6. Retry once. Open Windows Update and select the option to check for updates or resume the download. If the same code returns, continue rather than repeatedly starting the same failed operation.

These checks do not prove that the account or network caused the error. They simply remove common variables before more invasive repairs.

Run the Windows Update troubleshooter

Windows includes a troubleshooter that can diagnose and attempt to correct download and installation problems. On supported Windows versions, use this exact path:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System, then Troubleshoot.
  3. Open Other troubleshooters.
  4. Find Windows Update and select Run.
  5. Allow the scan to complete and apply any repair it offers.
  6. Restart the computer if Windows requests it, then try Windows Update again.

The troubleshooter may report that it made a change, found a problem, or could not identify one. A “no problem found” result does not rule out corrupted files or an access issue; it only means the automated checks did not find a repair they could apply. If the code remains, move to system-file repair.

Repair Windows system files with SFC and DISM

System File Checker (SFC) checks protected Windows files. Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) repairs the component store that Windows uses to service and restore those files. Run both from an elevated Command Prompt or PowerShell window.

Open an elevated terminal

  1. Open the Start menu and type Command Prompt or PowerShell.
  2. Right-click the result and select Run as administrator.
  3. Approve the User Account Control prompt.

The window title should indicate administrator privileges. If you receive “access denied” immediately when running a command, close the window and reopen it with Run as administrator.

Run SFC

At the elevated prompt, enter:

sfc /scannow

Press Enter and wait for verification to reach 100 percent. Do not close the terminal or power off the computer while the scan is running. SFC can report that it found no integrity violations, repaired files, found corrupt files but could not repair some of them, or could not perform the requested operation. Record the exact result.

Run DISM when SFC reports damage or the error continues

If SFC reports corruption, cannot repair all files, or 0x80080005 remains after a clean SFC result, run:

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

This command services the Windows image currently running on the computer. It can take considerably longer than SFC and may appear to pause at a percentage for several minutes. Wait for a completion message. If DISM finishes successfully, restart Windows and retry the update. If DISM reports that it could not complete, keep the output available for the next escalation rather than repeatedly running the same command without changing anything.

SFC and DISM address file and component-store corruption; they do not guarantee a fix for a permission policy, a third-party security conflict, or a damaged update cache. Those causes require the later steps.

Reset Windows Update’s temporary data and services

Windows Update stores downloaded packages and signatures in temporary folders and relies on several services. A damaged cache can cause a package to download but fail during verification or installation. Resetting the cache is more disruptive than running a troubleshooter, so do it only after the basic checks and file repairs.

Stop the update-related services

Open an administrator Command Prompt and run these commands one at a time:

net stop wuauserv
net stop bits
net stop appidsvc
net stop cryptsvc

These commands stop Windows Update, Background Intelligent Transfer Service, Application Identity, and Cryptographic Services. Windows may say that a service is not started, is stopping, or cannot be stopped because another operation is using it. A failed stop command is not automatically a new system fault; note which service produced it and continue only when the folders can be renamed safely.

Rename the cache folders

Renaming keeps the old folders available as a fallback while forcing Windows to create fresh ones. In the same elevated window, run:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
rename %systemroot%SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.bak
rename %systemroot%System32catroot2 catroot2.bak

If a rename reports that a file is in use, a related service is still active. Recheck the stop commands, close Settings and any update-related window, and try again. Do not delete the folders while they are in use. The catroot2 folder is distinct from a similarly named system folder; use the path shown above.

Start the services again

Restart the services with:

net start wuauserv
net start bits
net start appidsvc
net start cryptsvc

Restart Windows, open Windows Update, and select the option to check for updates. Windows will rebuild the temporary folders as needed. The first scan after a reset can take longer because cached metadata is gone. A successful reset does not restore a missing internet connection or change account permissions; it only removes stale update working data.

Check third-party security software

Third-party antivirus and other security products can interfere with update installation by filtering files, locking them while Windows replaces components, or applying rules that block a servicing process. Microsoft guidance recommends checking this possibility when 0x80080005 continues.

First update the security product itself and review its event or quarantine history for entries that mention Windows Update or a system component. If the product provides a documented, temporary maintenance or troubleshooting mode, follow that product’s instructions and retry the update only long enough to test the cause. Do not leave protection disabled while browsing or using untrusted files. Re-enable the protection immediately after the test.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the update succeeds only when the security software is not interfering, contact that product’s support team for a compatible configuration. Windows’ built-in protections and organizational policies may also be managed centrally, so a work computer can require an administrator to make the change.

Use Microsoft Update Catalog for a specific update

When Windows Update repeatedly fails for one identifiable update, Microsoft Update Catalog can provide a manual download of that update. This is useful when the update service itself is functional but its automatic installation path is stuck.

  1. Record the update’s identification number from Windows Update, normally an identifier beginning with KB.
  2. Search Microsoft Update Catalog for that exact identifier.
  3. Choose the package that matches your Windows version, architecture, and edition. Do not install a package merely because its number looks similar.
  4. Download the package, close other update attempts, and run the downloaded installer with an administrator account.
  5. Restart when prompted and check Windows Update again.

Manual installation is not a replacement for repairing a generally broken servicing stack. If several unrelated updates fail with 0x80080005, return to the system-file, cache, security, and repair-media paths instead of downloading packages one by one.

Repair Windows with installation media

If SFC, DISM, the troubleshooter, cache reset, and security checks do not resolve the error, Windows installation media or an in-place repair is the highest-effort escalation in this sequence. It can replace damaged operating-system components while preserving the existing installation when the setup workflow offers that choice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prepare carefully

  • Back up personal files before starting any repair installation.
  • Use reliable power and a stable internet connection during media creation and setup.
  • Have a USB flash drive available if the chosen Microsoft setup workflow requires removable media. The cited Microsoft guidance does not establish a universal minimum capacity, so follow the current Media Creation Tool requirements shown by Microsoft rather than relying on an old number.
  • Confirm that the installation media matches the language, edition, and architecture of the installed Windows version.
  • Keep product-activation information and recovery credentials available if your device or organization requires them.

Run the current Microsoft setup workflow

Use Microsoft’s current Windows installation-media or setup instructions to create or obtain the media, then start setup from Windows when performing an in-place repair. Read each screen carefully. The option to keep personal files and apps is the critical choice for an in-place repair; a clean installation has different consequences and should not be selected casually.

Installation media is a recovery path, not a guaranteed fix for every network, account, policy, or hardware problem. If setup itself stops with an error, record that new code. Do not repeatedly format the system or delete partitions while trying to solve 0x80080005 unless you have a verified backup and intentionally plan a clean installation.

Choosing the next remedy

Remedy Administrator rights Disruption Primary problem addressed External media
Restart, stable connection, administrator check, and hardware removal Usually not for the restart; needed for protected changes Lowest Temporary state, power, connectivity, account, or device conflicts No
Windows Update troubleshooter Windows may request elevation Low Detectable Windows Update configuration and service problems No
SFC and DISM Yes Moderate; scans can take time Corrupted protected files and component store No
Rename SoftwareDistribution and catroot2 Yes Moderate; services stop and metadata is rebuilt Damaged or stale Windows Update temporary data No
Security-software isolation test Depends on the product policy Moderate; protection must be handled carefully File filtering or policy interference during installation No
Microsoft Update Catalog Usually required to install the package Moderate One known update whose automatic path fails No
Installation media or in-place repair Yes Highest; backup and setup time required Persistent operating-system corruption or servicing failure Often

Use the least disruptive remedy that matches the evidence. A cache reset is unnecessary if the troubleshooter corrected the issue; installation media is unnecessary when one known update installs successfully from the Catalog.

What to do when the error returns

The download fails immediately

Recheck the exact code, connection, power, administrator access, and unnecessary hardware. Run the troubleshooter before changing the cache. An immediate failure can reflect permissions or configuration rather than a damaged downloaded package.

The download completes but installation fails

Run SFC and, when indicated, DISM. Then reset the update services and folders. Review third-party security software because access can be denied when Windows tries to replace a protected file.

Only one update fails

Use its exact KB identifier with Microsoft Update Catalog, matching the installed Windows edition and architecture. If the manual package also fails, treat the problem as a broader servicing issue and use the repair steps rather than trying unrelated packages.

Several updates fail after every restart

Escalate from file repair to cache reset, security-software checks, and finally installation media. Keep the SFC, DISM, and service-command results so a technician or administrator can see what has already been attempted.

The Microsoft Store shows the code

Record whether Windows Update also fails. If both surfaces report 0x80080005, prioritize the operating-system sequence in this guide. If only one Store app is affected and Windows Update works normally, preserve the app name and its exact message for Store-specific support; the code alone does not identify the app’s package or account problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Safety, reversibility, and realistic expectations

The early checks and troubleshooter are easy to undo because they do not replace system files. SFC and DISM make repairs to Windows components but normally leave personal files alone. Renaming the two update folders is reversible: the old folders have .bak names, while Windows creates fresh working folders. Do not remove the backup folders until the update works and you no longer need them for diagnosis.

There is no authoritative success-rate statistic for 0x80080005, and no single command fixes every occurrence. The responsible expectation depends on the Windows version, the particular update, local permissions, security software, and the condition of the component store. If a repair installation is required, back up first and read every setup choice; recovery work should not turn an update error into accidental data loss.

As an optional shortcut after the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements, invalid redirects, shared DLL files, temporary and cache cleanup, settings that affect CPU, RAM, and disk load, privacy warnings, vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, file shredding, and an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7; a free trial is available by category for at least two days before a paid subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.
