Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIf Windows shows 0x80070422 while downloading updates, the Windows Update service is usually disabled or unable to start. The string 0x800070422 is probably a mistyped or transposed version rather than a separately documented Microsoft code. Check and enable Windows Update first, then run the built-in troubleshooter and clear the update cache only if necessary.
What the two error strings mean
Microsoft’s current error table defines 0x80070422 as “The service cannot be started because it is disabled.” In a Windows Update context, that points to the Windows Update service rather than to a missing download file. The practical implication is important: restore the service before changing system files, editing the registry, or installing a repair utility.

The title string, 0x800070422, contains an extra zero and does not match the documented Microsoft code. A February 23, 2006 report by Scott Hanselman recorded that malformed string during an older Windows Defender download problem. That report is historical and does not establish a separate modern error definition. Treat the exact text on your screen as evidence: it may be a transcription error, a message from an older downloader, or a code emitted by software other than Windows Update.

- Copy the code exactly, including every zero and letter.
- Note whether it appeared in Windows Update, Microsoft Defender, or another downloader.
- Write down the Windows edition and version and the update name, if one is shown.
- Check whether the failure happens once or on every update attempt.
This record prevents you from applying a Windows Update remedy to an unrelated downloader and gives an administrator or Microsoft Support useful information if escalation becomes necessary.

Why a disabled service blocks downloads
Windows Update depends on a background service that handles update detection and downloading. When that service is disabled, Windows cannot start the update workflow, so the download fails before the update can be installed. A service can be disabled deliberately by an administrator, left in the wrong startup state after troubleshooting, or affected by an earlier system change. The code alone does not identify which of those situations occurred.
Because the documented meaning is service-related, the first repair is low-risk and reversible: inspect Windows Update in the Services console, set its startup type to Automatic, and start it if it is stopped. Do this before deleting cached files.
Choose the remedy in the right order
| Remedy | Built-in or third-party | What it changes | Administrator rights and reversibility | Evidence status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Enable and start Windows Update | Windows built-in | Changes the Windows Update service startup state and running state | Usually requires administrator permission; the startup type can be changed back | Current Microsoft guidance |
| Windows Update troubleshooter | Windows built-in | Checks and attempts standard update-related repairs | May request administrator approval; changes depend on the findings | Current Microsoft guidance |
Clear C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution contents |
Windows built-in | Deletes the local Windows Update download/cache contents so they can be rebuilt | Requires administrator permission; the deleted cache is recreated as updates are downloaded | Current Microsoft guidance |
| Check BITS and Automatic Updates | Windows built-in | Checks additional services involved in an older Defender download path | Usually requires administrator permission; service settings are reversible | Historical report from February 23, 2006, not a universal modern fix |
| Third-party repair utility | Third-party | May automate selected Windows repairs and cleanup | Follow the product’s permissions and trial terms; results vary | Not Microsoft guidance; use only after the manual sequence |
Fix 1: Enable and start Windows Update
This is the primary fix for the documented 0x80070422 condition.
- Press Win + R to open the Run dialog.
- Enter
services.mscand press Enter. Approve the User Account Control prompt if Windows displays one. - In the Services list, locate Windows Update. The list is alphabetical, so scrolling to the W section is usually fastest.
- Double-click Windows Update to open its Properties window.
- Set Startup type to Automatic.
- Look at Service status. If it says Stopped, click Start.
- Click Apply, then OK.
- Restart the computer.
- After Windows starts again, open Windows Update and select Check for updates or the equivalent command shown by your Windows release.
If the service was already set to Automatic and running, do not change unrelated services. Continue to the troubleshooter instead. If the Start control is unavailable, the account may lack administrative rights or an organization policy may be controlling the service; record that result rather than forcing a registry change.
What success looks like
A successful service repair normally lets Windows begin checking or downloading instead of immediately returning the disabled-service code. The first check may take longer than usual because Windows has to contact the update service and evaluate pending updates. If the same code returns immediately, continue with the built-in troubleshooter.

Fix 2: Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
The troubleshooter is Microsoft’s next built-in step when enabling the service does not resolve the download. Windows releases use slightly different labels, but the current path is:
- Open Settings.
- Go to System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run.
- Follow the checks shown on screen and allow the tool to apply a recommended repair when you recognize the change.
- Restart if Windows requests it, then return to Windows Update and check again.
On a release with a different Settings layout, search Settings for troubleshoot and choose the Windows Update troubleshooter from the results. The exact navigation can vary by Windows version, but the objective is the same: run the Windows Update diagnostic, not a generic hardware troubleshooter.
Fix 3: Rebuild the Windows Update cache
If the service is enabled and the troubleshooter does not clear a stuck download, Microsoft’s next documented step is to clear the contents of the Windows Update cache. This does not mean deleting the entire Windows folder or removing the SoftwareDistribution folder itself.
- Press Win + R, enter
services.msc, and press Enter. - Find Windows Update, open its Properties, and click Stop. Wait until the service status changes to stopped.
- Open File Explorer and go to
C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution. - Delete the contents inside that folder. Leave the
SoftwareDistributionfolder in place. - If Windows reports that a file is in use, return to Services and confirm that Windows Update is stopped before trying again. Do not delete files that another process still has open.
- Return to the Windows Update Properties window and click Start.
- Restart the computer and select Check for updates.
Deleting the contents removes cached download data that Windows can recreate; it does not install an update by itself. The next check must download the required files again, so the process can take longer and use additional bandwidth. If File Explorer refuses permission, use an administrator account or ask the device administrator rather than changing ownership of system folders.
Fix 4: Check BITS for an older Defender-specific failure
If the malformed 0x800070422 string appeared specifically while downloading an older Windows Defender installation or definition update, check Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) as well as Automatic Updates or Windows Update. The February 23, 2006 user report associated restarting those services with a successful download for that user.

- Locate Automatic Updates on an older Windows release, or Windows Update on a newer release, and check its status.
- Start a stopped service only if you have permission to do so, then retry the Defender download.
This is a historical compatibility check, not proof that every current Windows Update failure requires BITS. Do not treat the old report as a current Microsoft definition of the malformed code, and do not disable other services merely because they appear in the list.

If the download still fails
Confirm that the same code is being returned
After each repair, read the new message instead of assuming it is unchanged. A different code may indicate a separate problem, while a return to 0x80070422 means Windows still cannot start the required service.
Check the service state again
Open Services after the restart and verify that Windows Update remains set to Automatic. If it repeatedly changes back to Disabled, an administrator policy, security product, system-management tool, or another configuration change may be enforcing that state. Home users should avoid random registry scripts; managed-device users should contact the person who controls update policy.
Review update history
Record the failed update name and the date shown in Windows Update history. Include the exact error text, the Windows version, whether the service was stopped or disabled, whether the troubleshooter ran, and whether the cache was cleared. These details make escalation more efficient than reporting only “Windows will not download.”
Escalate with a complete record
If the service, troubleshooter, and cache reset do not help, contact Microsoft Support or a qualified administrator. Provide the exact code, the place where it appeared, Windows version, update history, and the steps already completed. Do not claim that the malformed string is an official Microsoft code; explain that it was displayed on your device and that the recognized code is 0x80070422.

Safety, reversibility, and common mistakes
- Do not confuse the codes: one extra zero changes the string, so copy it rather than retyping from memory.
- Do not start with system-file deletion: the documented condition is a disabled service, making Services the appropriate first check.
- Do not delete the wrong folder: clear the contents of
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributiononly after stopping Windows Update, and leave the folder itself in place. - Do not stop unrelated services: the historical BITS check applies to an older Defender download report and is not a general instruction to disable or restart everything.
- Expect administrator prompts: service settings and the Windows Update cache are protected system areas.
- Keep the original message: a screenshot or exact transcription is useful if the next attempt produces a different error.
These steps use Windows’ own service, diagnostic, and cache mechanisms. They are preferable to an unverified download because you can see what is being changed and undo a service startup setting if necessary.
Quick Recap
As an optional shortcut after the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements and shared DLL files, and it includes settings, cache cleanup, vulnerability checks, and an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7; its category-based free trial lasts at least two days before a paid subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.
