Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If Windows shows 0x80070057 while downloading or installing an update, the fastest reliable path is to restart, run the Windows Update troubleshooter, repair system files with sfc /scannow, and then reset the Windows Update cache if necessary. The code in the original title, 0X0070057, is almost certainly a transposition of 0x80070057. It is an error code, not a diagnosis: the underlying problem can be corrupted files, permissions, an incorrect configuration, or an invalid installation parameter.
What Windows error 0x80070057 means
0x80070057 is a hexadecimal Windows error that can appear in more than one component. Microsoft associates it with failed Windows Update installations and lists corrupted files, permission issues, and incorrect system configurations as possible causes. In Microsoft Edge, the same code is described as an invalid-parameter error during installation or updating.

That is why there is no single “0x80070057 fix.” The first task is to identify what was being downloaded or installed when the message appeared. A Windows Update failure needs a different first check from an Edge installer failure, even though the code is identical.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- It is probably not a virus warning. The code itself does not prove that malware is present.
- It is not limited to one Windows version. The same hexadecimal value can be generated by different Windows components and editions.
- It does not identify the damaged file. You need the failing component and, for an update, the specific KB number before choosing a targeted remedy.
Identify where the download failed
| Where the message appeared | What the code usually points to | Best starting point | Does the step change system files? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows Update in Settings | Corruption, permissions, or an incorrect system configuration that prevented an update from installing | Restart, then run the Windows Update troubleshooter | The troubleshooter may apply repairs; a restart or troubleshooter does not intentionally remove personal files |
| Microsoft Edge installer or updater | An invalid parameter during installation or update | Restart and obtain the installer from Microsoft’s official download source | Downloading a fresh installer does not alter existing documents; installation can replace Edge program files |
| Microsoft Store download | The Store or its download path reported the same code; the code alone does not identify the cause | Note the app name, restart, and complete the system-file and update checks below | System repairs can change protected Windows files, but they do not target personal documents |
| Backup, another installer, or an unidentified setup program | A component-specific parameter, permission, or configuration problem | Record the exact program and message before applying a component-specific repair | Varies by installer; do not delete program data until you know which component owns it |
If the message is not from Windows Update, do not assume that deleting the Windows Update cache will solve it. The cache procedure is specifically for a failed Windows Update download or installation.

Before you start
- Save open work and connect the PC to reliable power, especially during a firmware or Windows update.
- Write down the full error text and, for Windows Update, the KB number shown in update history or the failure message.
- Confirm that the system drive has enough free space. Microsoft notes that a PC with a small hard drive may need a USB drive inserted to complete an update.
- Use an administrator account for System File Checker, DISM, and service changes.
- Disconnect nonessential USB devices while diagnosing the failure, but keep a required storage drive connected if Windows explicitly asks for it.
Fix 0x80070057 in the recommended order
1. Restart Windows and retry
A restart closes a stalled installer, releases locked files, and reloads update services. Choose Start > Power > Restart, wait until Windows has fully loaded, and retry the same download. If the error returns, continue rather than repeatedly clicking Retry.
2. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
On current Windows 11 builds, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters. Find Windows Update, select Run, and follow the prompts. Let the troubleshooter finish before restarting and checking for updates again.
Windows 10 uses a different Settings layout: open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, select Windows Update, and choose Run the troubleshooter. The labels can vary slightly after a feature update.

The troubleshooter is a diagnostic and repair step, not a guarantee. If it reports that it could not identify a problem, continue to System File Checker.
3. Repair protected Windows files with System File Checker
- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter
sfc /scannowand press Enter. - Leave the window open until verification reaches 100 percent. Closing it early can leave the scan incomplete.
- Restart if Windows reports that it repaired files, then try the download again.
SFC checks protected system files against their cached versions. Its result matters: a message that no integrity violations were found points away from that particular type of corruption, while a repair message is a reason to restart before retrying the update.
4. Reset the Windows Update download cache
A damaged or incomplete update package can make the same download fail repeatedly. Resetting the cache removes the downloaded update files so Windows can obtain them again; it does not remove your personal files.
- Press Windows key + R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. - In the Services window, find Windows Update.
- Right-click it, choose Stop, and wait for the service status to change.
- Open File Explorer and enter
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionin the address bar. - Delete the contents inside that folder. Do not delete the
SoftwareDistributionfolder itself. If a file is in use, confirm that Windows Update has stopped and retry. - Return to Services, right-click Windows Update, and select Start.
- Restart Windows and check for updates again.
The first scan after a reset can take longer because Windows must recreate its local download data. If the folder cannot be changed, repeat the procedure from an administrator account and verify that the service is stopped.
5. Run DISM after SFC when corruption remains
Use DISM when SFC reports that it could not repair all files, or when the error persists after the cache reset. Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Allow the operation to complete, even if the percentage appears to pause. Microsoft-hosted guidance notes that this online DISM mode may need Windows Update to obtain repair files, so an internet connection can be important. When DISM finishes, restart the PC and run sfc /scannow once more if Windows still reports file corruption, then retry the update.

Use a targeted fix for Edge, Store, or a specific KB
Microsoft Edge
When 0x80070057 appears in Edge setup or its updater, Microsoft characterizes it as an invalid parameter during installation or update. Restart first, complete the SFC and DISM checks if Windows components may be damaged, and then download Edge again from Microsoft’s official Microsoft Edge download source. Avoid repackaged installers from file-sharing sites; they can add a second problem to the original installation failure.
Keep the exact installer message. If the official download still fails after Windows repairs, the remaining fault is likely specific to the Edge installation context rather than the Windows Update cache.
Microsoft Store
The Store can display the same hexadecimal code even though the Store is not Windows Update. Record the app name and whether the failure occurs with one app or every app. Restart Windows, run the Windows Update troubleshooter, and complete SFC and DISM before retrying. Those steps address shared Windows components without assuming that every Store failure has the same cause.
If only one application fails while other Store downloads work, keep the app name and the complete message for the app publisher or Microsoft support. Do not use a Windows Update cache reset as a first response to a single-app Store problem unless Windows Update itself is also failing.
A specific Windows KB update
If the failure names a KB number, search that exact KB in the Microsoft Update Catalog. Select the package matching your Windows version and system architecture, download it from the catalog, and run the package locally. Choosing the wrong architecture or edition can create a different installation error, so verify the version shown in Settings > System > About before downloading.
This route is most useful when Windows Update repeatedly fails on one identified update while other updates work. If the catalog package also fails, return to SFC, DISM, and the storage checks rather than downloading an unrelated package.
Check storage and removable media
Low free space can prevent an update from staging its files. Microsoft says that a PC with a small hard drive may need a USB drive inserted to update. In that situation, the USB drive supplies task-enabling storage; it does not repair 0x80070057 and it does not prove that the drive is defective.
- Open Settings > System > Storage and note the available space on the Windows drive.
- Remove or move only files you recognize, and empty the Recycle Bin if appropriate.
- Use a USB flash drive when Windows specifically requests additional space, leaving it connected until the update completes.
- Do not format a drive that contains needed files. Back up its contents before using it as temporary update space.
How to interpret the result
| Result after a step | What it suggests | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| The update succeeds after a restart | A transient service or file-lock condition | No further repair is needed; keep the update history for reference |
| The troubleshooter makes a repair and the update succeeds | A Windows Update configuration or service issue | Record the fix and continue normal updates |
| SFC repairs files, then the update succeeds | Protected system-file corruption contributed to the failure | Restart before using the PC normally |
| The SoftwareDistribution reset allows a fresh download | The local update download data was incomplete or damaged | Let the new download finish without shutting down |
| DISM or SFC reports unrepaired corruption | The component store or protected files need deeper repair | Run the commands in the documented order and preserve the exact result text |
| Only Edge fails | An Edge installation parameter or package issue is more likely than a general Windows Update failure | Use the official Edge download and retain the installer error |
| Only one Store app fails | The problem may be app-specific | Use the app name and full code when contacting the publisher or Microsoft support |
Common mistakes to avoid
- Do not treat 0x80070057 as one universal diagnosis. The failing component determines the appropriate cache, installer, or support path.
- Do not delete the entire Windows folder. The cache procedure removes contents of
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributiononly after Windows Update is stopped. - Do not interrupt SFC or DISM because the progress appears frozen. These operations can spend a long time on one percentage.
- Do not install a random KB package. Match the exact KB, Windows edition, version, and architecture.
- Do not use unofficial download mirrors for Edge or Windows packages. Use Microsoft’s official download and catalog sources.
- Do not assume a USB drive repairs the code. It only supplies additional storage when the update requires it.
Optional shortcut after the manual fixes
As an optional shortcut after the built-in Windows steps, Outbyte PC Repair can look for more than 100 common Windows issues, clean temporary and cache files, check selected Windows settings and missing updates, and provide tools such as real-time boost, file shredding, and crash logging. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7, offers a free trial by category for at least two days before a paid subscription, complements an antivirus rather than replacing one, and results vary; no tool repairs every crash.
When to stop troubleshooting locally
Escalate with the exact code, component, KB number, SFC or DISM result, and the step where failure persists when:
- Windows Update fails after a restart, troubleshooter, SFC, cache reset, and DISM.
- The Microsoft Update Catalog package for the correct KB and architecture also fails.
- DISM and SFC repeatedly report corruption they cannot repair.
- The PC shuts down, loses power, or reports storage errors during the update.
- Edge or a Store app alone fails while Windows Update is healthy and the official installer is being used.
This information distinguishes a Windows servicing problem from an application-specific installer problem and prevents repeating the same cache reset without new evidence.
