How to Fix Windows Defender Restore 0x80070422 (and the 0x800704022 Typo)

If Windows Defender or Windows Security shows 0x80070422, Windows is reporting that a required service is disabled or stopped. The title string 0x800704022 contains an extra trailing 2 that is not documented by Microsoft, so first verify the exact code on your screen. Then restore the service, remove any antivirus-provider conflict, update Windows and Defender, and repair the Windows Security app before considering reset or reinstall options.

Verify the exact code before changing anything

Write down the complete hexadecimal value exactly as Windows displays it. Microsoft documents 0x80070422 as “The service cannot be started because it is disabled.” Microsoft also uses the same condition for Windows Update: “0x80070422: Windows Update service is disabled or stopped.” There is no Microsoft documentation for the extra-digit form 0x800704022. It may be a transcription error, a copied search query, or a different message that needs separate troubleshooting.

  • Take a screenshot or copy the error text, including the name of the service or feature mentioned.
  • Record whether the computer runs Windows 10 or Windows 11 and which version is installed.
  • Note whether another antivirus product is installed and currently enabled.
  • Record when the problem began and whether it followed an antivirus removal, Windows update, software installation, or restore.

Do not substitute registry files, service settings exported from another computer, or “Defender repair” executables from an unverified download site. A mismatched service configuration can create a second problem while hiding the original one.

What 0x80070422 means for Windows Defender

The code is a service-state error, not a diagnosis that Windows itself must be reinstalled. A service required by Windows Security, Microsoft Defender, or Windows Update is configured as disabled or is stopped. The first fix is therefore to inspect the named service, set the startup behavior Microsoft specifies, start it, and restart Windows.

A separate antivirus can also explain why Defender appears unavailable. Microsoft states that when another antivirus app is installed and turned on, Microsoft Defender Antivirus turns off automatically. In that case, the correct repair is to decide which provider you want active and remove the conflict through the other product’s supported uninstaller rather than forcing Defender on with registry edits.

That distinction matters after an antivirus trial expires or is only partly removed. The visible Windows Security page may still open while the provider registration remains in an unexpected state. Treat the provider listing as the authority for which real-time antivirus is active, not simply the presence of a Defender icon in the notification area.

Prepare safely before troubleshooting

  • Sign in with an administrator account. Changing a service, uninstalling security software, or repairing an app can require elevation.
  • Save open work and disconnect external drives that contain irreplaceable files while you test security settings.
  • If you may later use reset, restore, or reinstall, back up important files now. Those recovery paths can change applications, settings, or the system drive.
  • Keep the computer connected to power and a reliable network for updates, but avoid downloading unofficial repair tools.
  • Note your current antivirus choice and any license or setup information you will need if you later reinstall it.

Work from least destructive to most destructive. Service changes, provider checks, updates, and an app Repair attempt normally preserve personal files. Reset, System Restore, and reinstall can roll back or remove software and system changes, so they belong at the end of the sequence.

Fix 0x80070422 by enabling the required service

Open the Services console

  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Enter services.msc and press Enter.
  3. Find the service named in the error. If the message identifies Windows Update, inspect that service; if it identifies a Windows Security or Defender component, inspect that named component instead.

Set startup and start the service

  1. Right-click the service and choose Properties.
  2. In Startup type, choose Automatic when that is the setting called for by Microsoft’s instructions for the affected service.
  3. If Service status shows Stopped, select Start.
  4. Select Apply, then OK.
  5. Close the Services window and restart Windows.

Apply the setting to the service actually named by the message; do not change every service containing the words “security,” “update,” or “defender.” The code describes a disabled or stopped dependency, but it does not authorize changing unrelated startup types.

After the restart, open Windows Security and repeat the action that produced the code. If the service refuses to start, note the new error text and the service name. A service that immediately stops can indicate damaged system components, a policy restriction, or a conflict with another security provider; do not keep changing unrelated services at random.

Check for a third-party antivirus conflict

Identify the active provider

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose Manage providers.
  4. Read which antivirus provider is active and whether Microsoft Defender Antivirus is turned off because another product is enabled.

If you intentionally use the other antivirus, its provider status is expected and the Defender error may not require Defender to be re-enabled. If you want Microsoft Defender to resume, uninstall the conflicting antivirus using its own supported uninstaller, then restart Windows. Microsoft says Defender should turn on automatically after the other antivirus is removed. Check Manage providers again after the restart rather than assuming the change succeeded.

Do not run two real-time antivirus providers at once. If the other product has a separate cleanup utility supplied by its publisher, use that supported method only when the normal uninstaller cannot complete. A failed uninstall can leave a provider registered even though the main program no longer appears in the usual app list.

Run Windows Update and refresh Defender protection updates

Install pending Windows updates

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Windows Update (in Windows 10, this is under Update & Security).
  3. Select Check for updates, install all applicable updates, and restart when prompted.
  4. Return to Windows Security and check the provider status and the original error.

Handle repeatedly failing Defender updates

If Defender protection updates continue to fail, Microsoft recommends installing the latest protection updates manually. Use Microsoft’s current protection-update instructions for your Windows edition, install the package, restart, and check Windows Security again. Manual protection updates address the update component; they do not replace the service or provider checks above, so complete those checks if the service remains disabled.

Run the update check after removing a conflicting antivirus and again after repairing Windows Security. That sequence helps distinguish an unavailable update service from an app interface that is merely displaying stale status. If an update requests a restart, complete it before judging whether the code has cleared.

Repair the Windows Security app

A damaged Windows Security app package can make the interface report an error even after the underlying service is available. Windows versions expose slightly different labels, but the path is:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps, then Installed apps. Windows 10 may label this area Apps & features.
  3. Find Windows Security, open its menu, and select Advanced options.
  4. Choose Repair when it is available. This attempts to repair the app without deleting its stored data.
  5. Restart Windows and test Windows Security.
  6. If Repair did not help, return to the same page and choose Reset. Confirm the prompt, restart, and test again.

Reset is more disruptive to the app than Repair because it clears the app’s stored state. It does not by itself reinstall Windows, but you should record any custom Windows Security preferences before using it. If the Advanced options page is unavailable, continue with the service, provider, and update checks rather than downloading a replacement security app from an unofficial site.

Use Protection history to distinguish a service problem from a blocked file

Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history. Protection history can show that an important service is off and may provide an action to correct it. Expand the relevant card and follow the offered action only when it matches the problem you are seeing.

Protection history can also contain a quarantined file that is unrelated to the service error. Microsoft’s Restore action puts a quarantined file back on the device, where Defender will detect it again. Restore a file only after independently confirming that it is safe and that the detection is a false positive. The current Microsoft page says Protection history retains events for two weeks; that interface behavior can change, so older events may no longer be available.

Do not use Restore as a way to bring back a disabled service. It applies to a quarantined item, not to service configuration. If a card identifies a potentially unwanted or malicious file, leave it quarantined unless you have independently verified the file and understand the risk.

Choose the least destructive recovery path

Use the following decision points after service, provider, update, app-repair, and Protection history checks. The options differ in reversibility, data impact, prerequisites, and the type of damage they address.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Path Reversibility Data impact Prerequisite Best fit
Enable and start the service High; the startup setting can be changed again Does not change personal files Administrator rights and the correct service name Disabled or stopped service
Remove a conflicting antivirus The antivirus can generally be reinstalled later Does not change personal files, but removes that security application The antivirus publisher’s supported uninstaller Another antivirus is the active provider
Repair or reset Windows Security Repair is less disruptive; Reset clears app state Targets the app rather than the personal-file library Windows Settings exposing Advanced options Corrupted Windows Security app behavior
System Restore Reversible only by selecting another available restore point Rolls back system-drive changes, including apps and settings made after the selected point A usable restore point and access to Windows Recovery Environment Known-good point before broader system damage
Reset or reinstall Windows Most disruptive Can remove applications and alter the Windows installation; back up files first Backups; reinstall may also require installation media, a product key, and setup files Severe malware or system damage when other paths fail

In practical terms, choose service repair when the code points to a disabled dependency; choose provider removal when another antivirus is active; choose app Repair when the service and provider are correct but the interface is broken. Use rollback or reinstall only when there is evidence of wider damage and you can meet the backup and media requirements.

Try System Restore only when you have a known-good point

System Restore is a point-in-time rollback, not a Defender-specific repair. It runs from the Windows Recovery Environment and returns the system drive to the selected state. Microsoft warns that apps, settings, files, passwords, certificates, and keys changed after that point can be lost. Do not power off the device while the restore is running.

  1. Back up current files and record software you installed recently.
  2. Open Windows Recovery options and choose System Restore.
  3. Select a restore point dated before the Defender error appeared.
  4. Review the affected programs if Windows offers that list, then confirm the restore.
  5. Leave the computer connected to power until Windows reports completion, then test Windows Security.

System Protection is not enabled by default, so a usable restore point may not exist. If no suitable point is listed, cancel rather than choosing an arbitrary date. A point created after the error began is not evidence that the service configuration was healthy before the failure.

Reset or reinstall Windows only after backing up

Microsoft lists reset, restore, or reinstall as options when malware or system damage is severe. These are escalation steps, not the normal response to one service-disabled code.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reset

Use the Windows recovery settings to reset the installation only after backing up documents, browser data, license information, and other files you need. Read each choice carefully because the selected reset mode determines whether applications and personal data are retained or removed. After setup completes, install current Windows updates and verify Windows Security before restoring optional software.

Manual reinstall

A manual reinstall may require installation discs or a writable USB flash drive prepared as installation or recovery media, along with product keys and setup files. The USB media is a way to start recovery or installation; it is not a direct Windows Defender fix. Confirm that your backup is readable and that you know the correct Windows edition before erasing or replacing the existing installation.

After a reinstall, restore one security provider at a time. Installing a third-party antivirus before Windows finishes its updates can make it harder to tell whether Defender is working normally or has simply yielded to the new provider.

Windows 10 lifecycle and version checks

Microsoft’s published support information says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Because lifecycle policy can change and editions may differ, check Microsoft’s current lifecycle page for your exact edition before relying on continued updates. If the computer is still on Windows 10 after that date, the lack of new platform updates can affect security maintenance even when the service error itself is repaired.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Windows version also explains why menu names differ. Windows 11 commonly uses Installed apps, while Windows 10 may show Apps & features and place update controls under Update & Security. Use the equivalent page on your edition rather than treating a missing label as proof that the feature is unavailable.

When each troubleshooting branch has failed

The service will not start

Return to the exact service named in the error, confirm that Startup type was applied, and capture any new status message. Check Windows Update and the active provider before attempting recovery. Avoid disabling additional services to “make room” for Defender.

Defender remains off after antivirus removal

Restart once more, open Virus & threat protection > Manage providers, and verify that no other antivirus remains active. If remnants remain, use that product’s supported removal method and then repeat the provider check.

Windows Security opens but still shows stale information

Use the app’s Repair option, restart, and use Reset only if Repair fails. Then install pending Windows and protection updates.

As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can look for common Windows issues, tune settings that contribute to CPU, RAM, or disk load, clear temporary and cache files, check Windows settings and missing updates, and provide tools such as real-time boost and an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7, offers a free trial by category of at least two days before a paid subscription, complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, and results vary; no tool repairs every crash.

The practical stopping point

For the documented 0x80070422 condition, stop escalating once the correct service starts, Windows Security identifies the intended provider, updates install, and the original action completes without the error. Use Repair before Reset, and reserve System Restore or reinstall for a known broader system problem with a verified backup and a clear recovery point.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I fix Windows Defender error 0x80070422?

Verify the exact code, open services.msc, find the service named in the message, set Startup type to Automatic when Microsoft’s instructions call for it, start it if stopped, apply the change, and restart Windows. Then check the active antivirus provider and install pending Windows and Defender updates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does Windows Security say the service cannot be started?

Microsoft defines 0x80070422 as a service that is disabled or stopped. A third-party antivirus can also turn Microsoft Defender off automatically. Check the named service and Virus & threat protection > Manage providers before changing anything else.

How do I restore Windows Security after removing an antivirus?

Use the antivirus publisher’s supported uninstaller, restart Windows, and check Manage providers again. Microsoft says Defender should turn on automatically after the other antivirus is removed. If the interface remains faulty, use Windows Security’s Repair option and then Reset only if Repair fails.

Can I repair Windows Security without reinstalling Windows?

Usually. Enable the required service, remove provider conflicts, run Windows Update, manually install protection updates if needed, and use Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Windows Security > Advanced options > Repair. Reset the app only after Repair fails; reserve System Restore or reinstall for broader damage.

Should I restore a file from Protection history?

Only after independently confirming that the quarantined file is safe and the detection is a false positive. Microsoft’s Restore action puts the file back, where Defender will detect it again. Restore does not repair a disabled service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What does the extra digit in 0x800704022 mean?

Microsoft documents 0x80070422, not 0x800704022. Verify the exact on-screen value and complete message. If the code is different, do not assume the service-specific sequence applies.

The Bottom Line

Verify the code, enable the correct service, remove any active antivirus conflict, update Windows and Defender, then Repair Windows Security. Back up before Reset, System Restore, or reinstall, and use those options only for confirmed broader damage.
