Windows Defender error 0x80070643 is a Windows Installer/update failure code, not a diagnosis by itself. The same code can appear when a Defender security-intelligence update, Defender platform update, cumulative Windows update, or Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) update fails. Start by identifying the exact failed update and your Windows build. Then run the Windows Update troubleshooter, restart, and apply the branch that matches the update. A WinRE update has a specific recovery-partition requirement; a Defender intelligence update depends on Microsoft Defender ownership, Windows Update and BITS services, and access to Microsoft update endpoints.
If your search used “ox80070643,” the code is normally written with a zero: 0x80070643.

1. Identify exactly which update failed
Do not begin by resetting every Windows Update component. First establish what Windows was trying to install. The error code is shared by several update families, and the safe fix differs for each one.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Open Settings and go to Windows Update > Update history. In Windows 10, the path is Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View update history.
- For Defender-only failures, open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection updates and open the update history. Copy the complete update name, KB number if shown, security-intelligence version, platform version, and the Windows build.
- Press Win+R, enter
winver, and record the Windows edition, version, and OS build. A Windows 11 WinRE update and a Windows 10 cumulative update may display the same 0x80070643 code but require different work. - Note whether the device is managed by an employer or school, whether a third-party antivirus is installed, whether a proxy or VPN is required for internet access, and whether the failure occurs repeatedly or only once.
| Failed item | Typical history entry | First checks |
|---|---|---|
| Defender security-intelligence update | “Security intelligence update for Microsoft Defender Antivirus,” with an intelligence version | Defender ownership, Windows Update and BITS services, endpoint access, then the official manual intelligence package |
| Defender platform update | “Update for Microsoft Defender Antivirus antimalware platform,” usually with a platform version | Defender ownership, services, policy, connectivity, and the normal Windows Update path |
| WinRE update | A KB entry referring to Windows Recovery Environment; KB5042321 is an example documented for Windows 11 | Recovery-partition free space and the installed Windows version |
| Cumulative or other Windows update | “Cumulative Update for Windows” or another component unrelated to Defender | Windows Update troubleshooter, restart, system-file checks, and only then component repair |
Write down the details before making changes. They let you undo an inappropriate repair and give Microsoft support useful information if escalation is necessary.

2. Run Microsoft’s first-response procedure
Microsoft states: “If you get an error code while downloading and installing Windows updates, the Update Troubleshooter can help resolve the problem.” Use that supported path before deleting caches or changing the recovery partition.
- In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, find Windows Update, and select Run. If your build presents Microsoft’s Get Help app instead, follow its Windows Update diagnostic flow.
- In Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Windows Update, then choose Run the troubleshooter.
- Allow every check and repair to finish. Apply a suggested fix rather than closing the tool halfway through.
- Restart the PC, even if the troubleshooter says no change was required.
- Retry the same update once. Repeatedly pressing “Check for updates” without changing the underlying condition rarely adds information.
If the update installs after the restart, verify the entry in update history and stop. If 0x80070643 returns, continue with the branch for the exact update you recorded.
3. Fix a Defender security-intelligence update
Confirm that Microsoft Defender owns antivirus protection
A third-party antivirus can register as the active provider through the Windows Security Center API. Microsoft says that when another provider takes ownership, Microsoft Defender is disabled and its updates cannot apply. Open Windows Security > Settings > Manage providers (the wording can vary slightly by Windows build) and inspect the antivirus provider shown as active.

Do not run two real-time antivirus engines together.
- If the device is managed, an administrator policy may intentionally disable Defender. Do not remove that policy on a work or school PC; ask the administrator to service the update.
- After ownership changes, restart Windows and check Protection updates again.
Check Windows Update and BITS
Defender intelligence packages use Windows update infrastructure. The Windows Update and Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) services must be available.
- Press Win+R, enter
services.msc, and press Enter. - Find Windows Update. Its status should be running when an update is being downloaded. If it is stopped, start it; if it is disabled, restore a non-disabled startup configuration unless organizational policy requires otherwise.
- Find Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS). Start it when it is stopped. BITS may start on demand, so a non-running status while idle is not automatically an error; the important check is that it can start during the update.
- Retry the update from Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection updates > Check for updates.
If either service immediately stops, note the message in Event Viewer and continue to the logging section rather than repeatedly forcing it to start.
Check firewall, proxy, and endpoint access
Microsoft’s Defender documentation requires the URLs used for security-intelligence updates to be allowed through a firewall or proxy. A web browser working normally does not prove that the update service can reach those endpoints.
- Open Settings > Network & internet > Proxy and confirm that the configured proxy is intentional. On a managed network, obtain the correct settings from the administrator rather than bypassing them.
- Check firewall or secure-web-gateway logs for blocked Microsoft update traffic. SSL inspection can also interfere if the inspection device is not configured for Windows update services.
- If the PC uses a VPN, test once on a trusted network without the VPN, if your organization permits that test.
- Confirm that date, time, and time zone are correct; an incorrect clock can break secure connections.
Do not permanently disable the firewall or security software as a diagnostic shortcut. If a temporary, administrator-approved exception is necessary, remove it after the test.
Install the current intelligence package manually
When services and connectivity are healthy but the normal update still fails, use Microsoft’s official Defender security-intelligence download page. Select the package that matches the device architecture and install it as an administrator. Then restart and use Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection updates > Check for updates to confirm that the installed intelligence version is current.
Use only the official Microsoft package. Do not download replacement DLLs or “fix” executables from file-sharing sites. A manual intelligence package addresses that package; it does not repair a damaged Windows servicing stack or a full cumulative-update failure.
4. Fix a WinRE update failure
WinRE updates have a different prerequisite from Defender intelligence updates. Microsoft’s KB5042321 documentation for a Windows 11 WinRE update says: “The PC must have 250 MB of free space in the recovery partition to apply this update successfully.” That is free space in the recovery partition, not free space on the ordinary C: drive.
Verify the installed WinRE configuration
- Open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Run
reagentc /infoand record whether Windows RE is enabled and which location is listed. - Use the PowerShell, DISM, or WinREAgent-event methods documented by Microsoft for your Windows version to determine the recovery partition’s size and available space. The exact commands and event names vary by release, so match the procedure to the build recorded with
winver. - Check update history again to make sure the failed KB really is a WinRE update. Do not resize a partition merely because 0x80070643 appeared.
If the recovery partition is too small
Follow Microsoft’s supported recovery-partition expansion procedure for the exact Windows version and disk layout. Back up important files first and ensure you can identify the EFI, Windows, and recovery partitions correctly. The procedure may require shrinking the Windows partition and recreating or moving the recovery partition; the allowed steps depend on whether the disk uses GPT/UEFI and on the existing partition order.
- Do not delete, format, or assign a permanent drive letter to the recovery partition casually.
- Do not copy a recovery image from another Windows edition or build.
- If BitLocker is enabled, make sure the recovery key is available before partition work.
- After the supported resize, run
reagentc /infoagain, restart, and retry the specific WinRE KB.
If the partition already has the required free space and the WinRE update still fails, treat it as a servicing or component issue and continue with the general Windows Update checks rather than repeating partition changes.

Use this escalation only after identifying the update and completing the troubleshooter, restart, ownership, service, network, or WinRE checks that apply. Record the original error and back up important data.
Run DISM and System File Checker
- Open Windows Terminal (Admin).
- Run
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthand wait for it to reach completion. Do not close the window if progress pauses for several minutes. - Run
sfc /scannowand wait for verification to finish. - Restart Windows, then retry the identified update once.
DISM repairs the component store used by servicing; SFC checks protected system files. If either command reports that it could not complete, save the exact message and do not substitute downloaded DLL files.
Reset the Windows Update cache only when needed
Microsoft’s component-repair guidance includes stopping update-related services, renaming the update cache folders, restarting the services, and trying the update again. This can force Windows to rebuild damaged metadata, but it also removes locally cached update files and may require downloads again.

- Rename, rather than delete, the
SoftwareDistributionandCatroot2folders so they can be restored if necessary. - Restart the services, reboot Windows, and run the Windows Update troubleshooter again.
- Retry only the update that originally failed. If the reset changes the error, record both codes.
On a managed PC, cache resets can conflict with WSUS or endpoint-management policy. Ask the administrator before performing them.
6. Check policy, managed networks, and security software
0x80070643 can persist when a policy intentionally controls updates or when a network device blocks the required traffic.
- In Settings > Windows Update, look for messages saying that settings are managed by an organization.
- Ask the administrator whether WSUS, Microsoft Intune, Group Policy, or a maintenance window controls Defender and Windows updates. A local repair cannot override an approval or deferral policy.
- Review third-party antivirus, endpoint detection, firewall, proxy, and SSL-inspection logs for blocked update processes or Microsoft endpoints.
- Ensure Windows Update and BITS are not disabled by a “debloat” script or registry tweak. Undo only changes you can identify and document.
- Microsoft’s Defender troubleshooting guidance recommends collecting Windows Update and Defender diagnostic logs when endpoint access and service checks do not explain the failure. Save those logs with the KB, version, build, and timestamps.
7. Check Windows 10 support status
Microsoft says that after October 14, 2025, it no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. Because the current date is after that deadline, a Windows 10 PC may be outside normal free servicing. Confirm the edition and build with winver before spending hours on repeated retries.
If the failed item is unavailable because the device is past its servicing path, decide whether the PC can move to a supported Windows release or whether your organization provides another supported maintenance option. Repair commands cannot make an update available for an unsupported operating system.
8. When to collect logs or escalate
Escalate after the update identity is known and the matching manual checks have been completed. Include:
- Windows edition, version, OS build, system architecture, and whether the PC is managed.
- The complete failed update name, KB number, Defender intelligence or platform version, and the timestamp.
- Whether a third-party antivirus is active, whether Windows Update and BITS start, and whether a proxy, VPN, WSUS, or SSL inspection is present.
- The exact output from the troubleshooter, DISM, SFC, or cache-reset sequence.
- For a WinRE update, the recovery-partition size/free-space result and the output of
reagentc /info.
Use Microsoft’s support channels or your organization’s administrator for a managed device. Avoid registry cleaners, unofficial repair tools, replacement DLL downloads, and scripts that delete partitions or disable security controls.
Quick Recap
9. A safe decision checklist
- Correct the typo mentally: the code is 0x80070643.
- Copy the failed update name, KB, version, and Windows build.
- Run the Windows Update troubleshooter, restart, and retry once.
- For Defender intelligence or platform updates, verify Defender ownership, Windows Update, BITS, proxy/firewall access, and organizational policy.
- Use Microsoft’s official intelligence package only when the failed item is a Defender intelligence update and normal delivery remains broken.
- For a WinRE update, verify the documented 250 MB recovery-partition free-space requirement and use only the supported partition procedure for the installed version.
- For a general Windows update, escalate to DISM/SFC and the documented cache-reset procedure, preserving logs.
- Check Windows 10 support status before repeated retries.
As an optional shortcut after these manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can look for more than 100 common Windows issues, including broken system elements and shared DLL problems, and can clean temporary and cache files. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7, includes a free trial by category for at least two days, and then requires a subscription; it complements antivirus software, does not replace it, and results vary.
