A missing Start-menu entry does not prove that Windows uninstalled the app. First check Start > All apps, then verify Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Those two checks separate a missing shortcut from an app that is no longer installed, unavailable in Microsoft Store, or installed but malfunctioning.
Use the result to choose the least disruptive fix: locate and relaunch the app, restore its Start entry where available, reinstall it through its official source, reset Microsoft Store, repair or reset the app, or escalate to Windows recovery only when the problem affects the wider PC.

What “missing from Start” actually tells you
The Start menu is an access list, not the definitive inventory of software on your computer. Windows can show an application in its installed-app inventory even when you cannot see the expected Start shortcut. Conversely, an app absent from Start and from Installed apps may have been removed, installed for another user, or never completed installation.
Windows 11 places the most-used applications near the top of the Start app view and then presents the remaining entries alphabetically. A search that fails to find an app is therefore only an initial symptom. Check both locations before reinstalling anything or changing system-wide settings.

Step 1: Check Start’s complete app list
- Open Start.
- Select All apps.
- Scan the list alphabetically for the application’s name. Do not rely only on the most-used section.
- If the app is present, open it from that list. If the context menu offers an option to pin the app to Start, use that option to restore a convenient entry.
If the program opens, the installation is probably intact and the original problem was limited to the Start listing or shortcut. You can continue using the app from All apps while deciding whether you need a pinned entry. If it is not listed, move to the installed-app check rather than assuming that Windows removed it.
Step 2: Confirm whether Windows still considers the app installed
- Open Settings.
- Choose Apps.
- Open Installed apps.
- Search for the app by its current name, or scan the list if the publisher uses a different display name.
This check is separate from Start. The result determines which troubleshooting branch applies:
| What you find | What it means | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| The app appears in All apps and opens | The program is available; the issue is limited to how you reach it from Start. | Use the app-list entry and pin it to Start if that command is offered. |
| The app is in Installed apps but not in Start | Windows still records an installation, while the Start listing is missing or incomplete. | Open the app from its installed-app entry if possible. If it fails, use the repair branch below; if the app works, restore a Start entry where Windows offers that option. |
| The app is absent from Installed apps | Treat it as potentially uninstalled rather than merely hidden. | Use the publisher’s official installer or Microsoft Store, depending on how the app was obtained. |
| The app is installed but will not run | The Start symptom is accompanied by an application fault. | Try Repair, then Reset if offered and necessary. |
Names can change after an update, so search for the publisher’s name or a shortened version of the app name as well as the familiar title. Do not remove an entry simply because its Start shortcut is absent; the inventory is the more useful evidence about installation status.
When the app appears in Installed apps but not Start
An entry in Installed apps confirms that Windows has an installation record. It does not guarantee that the Start shortcut is healthy, that the program can launch, or that every Start view has refreshed correctly.
Try launching it from the installed-app entry
Use the app’s available controls in Settings > Apps > Installed apps. If Windows provides a launch command and the program opens, the software itself is available. Return to Start > All apps and look again; if the context menu provides a pinning command, use it to place the app back on Start.
If it opens successfully but repeatedly disappears from the Start view, record whether the behavior follows a sign-out, restart, or app update. That information helps a workplace administrator or the app publisher distinguish a shortcut problem from a policy or installation problem. Avoid broad Windows recovery for a single missing entry while the app remains usable.

If launching fails, repair before reinstalling
A listed app that will not run is a different problem from an app that is merely hard to find. Use the repair procedure in the next section before deleting the installation. Repair is designed to correct an application without immediately removing its data or settings, although the exact effect depends on the program.

Repair a malfunctioning app in Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find the affected app.
- Open the More menu beside its name.
- Choose Advanced options if that choice is available.
- Select Repair.
- Try opening the app again from Start or from its installed-app entry.
Microsoft notes that not every program exposes Advanced options or Repair. A missing button is a limitation of that app’s packaging, not an indication that you used the wrong path. If Repair is unavailable, continue with the other branch that matches your findings instead of repeatedly searching for the option.
Use Reset only when Repair does not solve the problem
If the app still fails after Repair, return to its Advanced options page and select Reset if Windows offers it. Reset is more disruptive than Repair: it can return the app to a clean state and may remove locally stored app data or preferences. Read any confirmation text and make sure you know where the app stores important files before confirming.
Reset is not a universal Windows command. It appears only for applications that support the feature, and the result can differ between Store apps and traditional desktop programs. If neither Repair nor Reset is available, use the publisher’s documented recovery or reinstall method rather than modifying unrelated system components.
When the app is absent from Installed apps
If the program is missing from both Start > All apps and Settings > Apps > Installed apps, treat the installation as absent until you establish otherwise. The appropriate source depends on how you originally obtained the software.

- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
- The app may not be available in your region.
- Family settings may restrict visibility or installation.
- You may be signed in with an account that does not have the expected access.
- The publisher may have withdrawn the app, so it is no longer available.
Check those conditions before concluding that Store is malfunctioning. Availability can differ by location and account, so a result seen on another computer or by another person is not proof that the same listing should appear for you.
Reset Microsoft Store’s cache when Store itself is the problem
- Press Windows + R to open the Run dialog.
- Enter
wsreset.exe. - Run the command and wait for the Store process to complete.
- When Microsoft Store opens again, search for the app and check whether it can be found or installed.
The wsreset.exe step addresses the Store’s cache; it does not make an app available in a region where the publisher has not released it, bypass family restrictions, or restore an app that has been withdrawn. If the listing remains unavailable, verify the account, region, and family-setting explanations above.
Traditional desktop programs
For software obtained outside Microsoft Store, use the publisher’s official installation route. Download the installer only from the publisher’s legitimate site or a source your organization has approved. During setup, note whether the installer offers per-user or all-user installation, because that choice can affect which Windows account sees the app and its Start entry.
Recommended Free Tools
If you are unsure whether the program was Store-delivered or installed from a downloaded package, check the app’s original documentation, purchase record, or the publisher name shown in Windows. Do not install a second copy over a working installation merely because its shortcut is missing; confirm the inventory result first.
Check Control Panel when the app’s identity is unclear
Some desktop programs are easier to identify through the classic uninstall interface than through modern Settings. Microsoft’s guidance for locating apps includes checking Start, Settings, and Control Panel. Open Control Panel’s installed-program view when the application is not obvious in Settings, especially if its name has changed or it was installed by an older installer.
A Control Panel entry is evidence that an installer registered the program, but it is not a guarantee that every file is intact. Use the publisher’s repair or reinstall instructions if the entry exists but the executable will not launch. Avoid uninstalling first if you need to preserve local data or settings.

Windows 10 considerations
The repair guidance applies to Windows 11 and Windows 10, but labels and layouts can differ. Follow the equivalent Apps and installed-program controls that your edition displays rather than forcing a Windows 11 path that is not present.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMicrosoft support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. That end-of-support date does not itself explain a single missing Start entry, but it matters when deciding whether to spend time on a broader Windows problem. If multiple built-in features are failing, plan a supported operating-system upgrade or consult the device administrator instead of treating one missing shortcut as an isolated app defect.
Use the least disruptive escalation for wider problems
Reinstalling Windows, resetting the PC, or using other recovery options affects far more than one application. Microsoft’s recovery guidance recommends starting with the least disruptive suitable option and backing up important files before using options that can cause data loss.
Escalate only after the app-specific checks
- First establish whether the app is listed in All apps.
- Then verify Installed apps, and check Control Panel when the program is an older desktop installation.
- For Store software, verify availability, account, region, and family settings; reset Store with
wsreset.exeonly when the Store cache appears to be the issue. - For a listed app that fails, use Repair, followed by Reset if offered and appropriate.
- Use Windows recovery only when the symptoms indicate a broader system problem or the supported app-specific routes have failed.
Before a recovery action that can remove applications or personal data, make a current backup of important documents and confirm that you can reinstall essential software. Read the recovery option’s warning carefully; “reset” at the Windows level is not the same as “Reset” on an individual app’s Advanced options page.
Get help from the right administrator
On a work- or school-managed computer, policies can control Store access, family-style restrictions, software installation, and Start layout. Contact the organization’s IT department when the app is required for work, when settings are locked, or when the same disappearance affects several managed applications. An administrator can verify whether the software was intentionally removed or restricted.
A practical decision checklist
- Open Start > All apps. Search the alphabetical list, not only the most-used area.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Search for the app and note whether Windows lists it.
- If listed and working: launch it from the available entry and pin it to Start if that command appears.
- If listed but failing: open More > Advanced options and choose Repair; use Reset only if Repair fails and Reset is offered.
- If absent and obtained from Store: check region, family settings, account, and whether the app is still available; run
wsreset.exeif Store itself needs a cache reset. - If absent and obtained elsewhere: reinstall through the publisher’s official route.
- If the issue is broader than one app: back up important files and follow Microsoft’s least-disruptive recovery order, or contact IT on a managed PC.
Common mistakes that make the problem worse
Reinstalling before checking Installed apps
A missing shortcut can lead to duplicate installations, lost settings, or confusion over which copy is current. The installed-app inventory takes a few seconds and tells you whether reinstalling is justified.
Best Value
Assuming Store search failure means a broken PC
Store visibility depends on availability, region, family settings, and account. A cache reset cannot override those conditions. Check them before changing Windows itself.
Using Reset as the first app fix
Repair is the less disruptive app-level choice. Reset can clear local state, so reserve it for a listed app that remains faulty after Repair and review the warning before confirming.
Jumping to Windows recovery
System recovery is designed for persistent or wider failures. It is disproportionate when one app is missing from Start but remains installed and usable. Protect your files and choose the narrowest effective remedy.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →What to record if the problem returns
Write down the Windows version, the app’s exact display name, whether it appears in All apps, whether it appears in Installed apps or Control Panel, how it was installed, and whether it launches. For Store apps, also note the signed-in account, region, and any family-setting restriction. This concise record prevents repeating the same checks and gives Microsoft support, the publisher, or your IT department enough context to choose the next step.
Final guidance
The reliable fix is to match the action to the evidence. A Start listing is only one view; the installed-app inventory is the second check that tells you whether the software is still present. Store availability issues require account, region, family-setting, and listing checks. A present but broken app gets Repair and, if necessary, Reset. Only after those branches fail should you consider broad Windows recovery, with a backup made first.
