Windows error 0x8007045D (often typed as 8007045D or 08007045D) means ERROR_IO_DEVICE: Windows Setup could not complete an input/output request. During a Windows 8 installation, the failed device may be the USB or DVD installer, its port or cable, a controller, or the disk receiving Windows. Recreate the installation media first, then remove extra hardware, isolate connections, and test the source and destination disks. Do not format or delete partitions until any recoverable data is backed up.

What 0x8007045D means during Windows 8 Setup

Microsoft Q&A defines 0x8007045D as “ERROR_IO_DEVICE” — “The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.” The number identifies an I/O failure, not a single defective part. Setup may be unable to read files from the installer, expand them, or write them to the destination disk.

The point in Setup where the message appears is your first diagnostic clue:

  • Booting from the USB or DVD, or copying setup files: suspect the installation media, optical drive, USB port, cable, or storage controller.
  • Expanding files or verifying files: either the media path or the destination disk can be failing.
  • Writing, formatting, or installing to a selected partition: suspect the destination disk, its connection, or the controller.

The same code can therefore appear on two computers for entirely different reasons. A fresh installer that works elsewhere is evidence against the media; a fresh installer that fails on the same computer shifts suspicion toward the target disk or its connection.

Before changing anything: protect data and record the failure

Record the exact wording and stage

Write down the complete code, the screen on which it appears, and what Setup was doing. Note whether the failure occurs immediately after booting, while copying or expanding files, or after you choose the destination partition. Also record which USB port, DVD drive, and internal disk are connected. This prevents you from changing several variables at once and losing the clue that identifies the failed path.

Back up files before repair or partition work

An I/O error can accompany a physically deteriorating drive. If the computer still starts, copy important documents, photos, and other irreplaceable files to another disk before running repair scans. If Windows will not start, use another working computer or a recovery environment to copy data to external storage. Treat partition deletion, formatting, and any operation that rewrites the disk as destructive until your backup is verified.

1. Recreate the Windows 8 installer

A corrupt or incorrectly created bootable installer is a documented cause of this error, and rebuilding it is the highest-value reversible test.

The pop-up button and built-in cable design offer convenience and portability. For desktop PCs, connecting to a rear USB port is recommended for optimal power and performance.
  1. On a known-good computer, obtain a legitimate Windows 8 installation image appropriate to your license and edition.
  2. Use a reliable USB flash drive or a writable DVD and a trusted method for making bootable media. If the existing drive has been used repeatedly or shows read errors, use a different, known-good drive rather than overwriting it.
  3. Let the media-creation process finish completely. Do not remove the USB drive or interrupt the DVD burn while files are being written.
  4. Safely eject the finished media, reconnect it to the problem computer, and try Setup again.

If the new media succeeds, the original installer was the likely fault. Keep the successful media available for the rest of the installation. If the same code returns at the same stage, continue with the connection and disk tests instead of repeatedly rebuilding identical media.

2. Strip Setup down to essential hardware

Microsoft’s general installation guidance recommends disconnecting nonessential peripherals while troubleshooting. Shut the computer down and remove:

  • Other USB flash drives and external hard disks
  • Printers, scanners, cameras, and card readers
  • USB hubs, docking stations, and nonessential adapters
  • Additional accessories that are not required to start Setup

Leave only the display, keyboard, mouse, installer media, and the internal disk you intend to test. An external drive can be mistaken for the destination, and a peripheral or hub can interrupt transfers. Retry with the simplified arrangement. Reconnect devices only after Windows 8 installs successfully.

3. Change one port, drive, or cable at a time

Do not swap every component simultaneously; the aim is to learn whether the error follows one part of the I/O chain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

USB installer

  1. Move the installer to a different USB port directly on the computer, not through a hub or dock.
  2. Retry Setup and note whether the failure stage changes.
  3. If the error persists, test the same installer on another known-good computer. A failure that follows the USB drive points to the media; a failure that stays with the original computer points to its port, controller, or disk.

DVD installer

  1. Inspect the disc for scratches, fingerprints, or visible damage and clean it gently from the center outward.
  2. Try a different optical drive or a freshly burned disc. An optical drive that struggles with other known-good discs is itself suspect.

Cables and external enclosures

For an external source or destination, replace the cable with a known-good one and connect directly to the computer. SanDisk documents 0x8007045D in USB and external-storage workflows, so a cable or enclosure can be part of the failure even when the disk inside is healthy.

4. Test the source and destination disks with CHKDSK

If fresh media and minimal hardware do not solve the problem, check the volume that Setup is reading from or writing to. Microsoft Q&A identifies CHKDSK as the check for this I/O error.

  • Low cost per megabyte, making them ideal for file backups before accidental deletion. Designed for long-term data archiving and storage, supporting over one million read cycles to ensure extended data protection.

Run CHKDSK from a working Windows installation

  1. Connect the suspected disk to a working Windows computer, or start the existing Windows installation if it still boots.
  2. Open Command Prompt with administrator privileges.
  3. Identify the correct drive letter in File Explorer before running a command. Drive letters can differ when a disk is attached to another computer.
  4. Run chkdsk X: /f, replacing X: with the volume being checked. The /f option asks Windows to correct file-system errors.
  5. If the disk remains readable and you have a current backup, a deeper surface check can be started with chkdsk X: /r. It can take a long time, especially on a large or damaged disk; do not interrupt it unless the computer is in danger of shutting down.

Run CHKDSK from Windows Recovery Environment

When the installed Windows copy will not start, boot from Windows installation or recovery media and choose the repair or recovery options that open a Command Prompt. In that environment, the Windows volume may not be C:.

  1. At Command Prompt, type diskpart, then list volume to display volumes and their letters.
  2. Type exit to leave DiskPart.
  3. Use the letter that contains the Windows or data volume, for example chkdsk D: /f.

Never assume that C: is the correct target in recovery mode. Checking the wrong volume wastes time and can create confusion about the result.

Interpret the result conservatively

  • No file-system errors: this does not prove the disk or controller is healthy; continue testing with another port, cable, or system.
  • Errors corrected: retry Setup with the fresh installer, but keep the backup because the underlying I/O problem may recur.
  • Bad sectors, repeated read failures, or the disk disappearing: stop destructive installation attempts, copy recoverable data, and plan to replace or professionally diagnose the disk.

5. Use the failure stage to choose the next test

Observation Most likely path Next reversible test What a result means
Failure while reading or copying files USB/DVD media, optical drive, port, cable, or controller Fresh media, another direct port, another drive or cable If the error follows the installer, replace the media; if it stays with the computer, investigate its I/O hardware.
Failure while expanding files Media path or destination disk Retry with known-good media, then run CHKDSK on the destination A media change that fixes it implicates the installer; persistent failure requires disk and connection checks.
Failure while formatting or writing the target Destination disk, cable, or controller Back up data, check the target volume, and test the disk on another system Recurring errors or bad sectors justify replacement rather than repeated reinstalls.
Failure occurs only with one USB port or cable That port or cable Use a different direct connection A successful install isolates the original connection without changing the disk.

6. Retry the installation without destroying evidence

After each change, retry with the same installation steps and note the exact point of failure. If Setup reaches the disk-selection screen, select only the intended destination. Do not delete partitions or format volumes merely to clear 0x8007045D; those actions can remove data and will not repair a failing cable, controller, or disk. Perform them only after the backup is complete and diagnostics indicate that the destination is suitable.

If the installation succeeds after a media or port change, shut down and reconnect peripherals one at a time. This confirms that the new installation is stable and identifies any device that brings the I/O failure back.

7. When the problem points to hardware

Escalate the diagnosis when all of the following have been tried: freshly created media, a minimal peripheral setup, alternate ports and known-good cabling, and CHKDSK or equivalent checks on the source and destination volumes.

  • Test the installer drive and target disk on another computer, if the interfaces permit it.
  • Run the disk manufacturer’s diagnostic utility when available, following its instructions and preserving your backup first.
  • Consider replacing the USB/DVD drive, cable, or internal disk that consistently reproduces the error.
  • If multiple known-good disks and installers fail on the same computer, the storage controller or mainboard connection may require professional service.

A replacement USB flash drive is generally an inexpensive way to eliminate the installer branch. Replacing an internal disk costs more and should be reserved for recurring I/O faults, bad-sector reports, repeated disconnects, or diagnostics that identify the disk as unreliable.

Common mistakes that make 0x8007045D harder to diagnose

  • Reusing the same questionable installer: rebuild it on a known-good computer before blaming the target disk.
  • Leaving external storage connected: unplug other flash drives and external disks so Setup has one clear destination.
  • Changing several variables at once: swap one port, cable, or drive at a time and record the outcome.
  • Running repair scans without a backup: copy recoverable data first, especially when the disk clicks, disconnects, or reports bad sectors.
  • Formatting to “force” the install: formatting cannot correct a failing physical connection and can erase the only copy of your files.
  • Assuming the code proves the hard drive is bad: 0x8007045D identifies an I/O failure somewhere in the path, not a specific component.

Practical decision sequence

  1. Record the code and the exact Setup stage.
  2. Back up data that is still readable.
  3. Recreate the installer on a known-good computer using a different USB drive or DVD if possible.
  4. Disconnect every nonessential peripheral.
  5. Try one alternate port, drive, or cable at a time.
  6. Run CHKDSK against the correctly identified source or destination volume.
  7. If bad sectors or repeated disconnects appear, stop reinstalling and replace or professionally diagnose the disk.
  8. If the error survives all tests, compare the installer and target on another system to isolate a controller or motherboard issue.

As an optional shortcut after these manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues, clean temporary and cache files, check selected Windows settings and missing updates, and provide an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7 with a category-based free trial of at least two days before a subscription; results vary, it does not repair every crash, and it complements rather than replaces antivirus protection.
