Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIf Windows 8 reports 0x800700422, first copy the complete message and confirm every character. This nine-digit hexadecimal suffix is not identified in the Microsoft error tables reviewed, so it may be a transcription error or a code tied to a different operation. After recording the evidence, back up your files, run the Windows Update troubleshooter, check connectivity, permissions, drivers, time and disk space, reset the update cache, and then repair Windows components with DISM and SFC if necessary.
1. Confirm what actually failed
Do not assign a cause to 0x800700422 from the number alone. The string supplied for this article has nine hexadecimal digits after 0x, and it does not appear in the Microsoft error-code material reviewed. A single missing or extra character can point to a completely different problem. Windows Update, Windows Setup, activation and an ordinary application can all display hexadecimal-looking failures, but their remedies and logs differ.

Capture the complete evidence
- Take a photograph or screenshot of the entire dialog before dismissing it.
- Copy the message into a text file, preserving the prefix, digits, punctuation and the sentence describing the failed operation.
- Write down whether the failure occurred while downloading, installing, rolling back an upgrade, activating Windows or running another application.
- Record the date and time, Windows edition and build, whether you were using an administrator account, and whether the computer restarted or displayed an access-denied message.
Use the exact text in later searches or support requests. Do not silently replace the code with a familiar-looking number; doing so can send you through the wrong repair procedure.
| What to identify | Why it changes the diagnosis | Evidence to keep |
|---|---|---|
| Operation | Update, setup/upgrade, activation and application errors use different components. | The window title, button you clicked and the sentence immediately before the code. |
| Symptom | A download failure suggests connectivity or cache problems; a rollback can involve component or driver conflicts; access denied points toward permissions. | The last visible action and any percentage or stage shown. |
| System state | Cache corruption, component-store corruption, a disabled service, a third-party driver, low free space and an incorrect clock require different checks. | Free-space reading, service status, driver changes and the failure timestamp. |
| Logs | Timestamped entries can distinguish a generic code from the underlying failure. | Relevant Windows Update information and the section of %Windir%logsCBSCBS.log around the failure time. |
2. Protect your files and prepare Windows 8
Microsoft’s general update guidance puts a personal-file backup first. Copy documents, photos, browser exports and other irreplaceable data to another drive or a location you can access if Windows needs recovery. The following procedures target Windows components and cached update files, not your personal folders, but a backup protects against an interruption or an unrelated hardware problem.

Use the right account and connection
- Sign in with an account that can approve administrator prompts. Some update repairs and service changes cannot complete under a standard account.
- Keep the computer on reliable power. A desktop should remain connected to mains power; a laptop should be plugged in.
- Use a stable internet connection and avoid switching networks while Windows Update is downloading or installing.
- Disconnect nonessential USB devices, external drives, docks, card readers and other recently attached hardware. Leave the keyboard, mouse and network connection needed for the update.
Check clock, drivers and storage
Open Windows’ date and time settings and synchronize the clock and time zone. A substantially incorrect clock can interfere with update validation. Next, install available updates for third-party hardware from the device maker when a driver is implicated, especially if the failure began after connecting or replacing a device. Do not uninstall a working driver merely because the error is unexplained.
Check the free space on the Windows drive before retrying. Microsoft’s current upgrade guidance specifies at least 16 GB free for a 32-bit upgrade and 20 GB for a 64-bit upgrade. Those figures are stated for upgrades, not a guarantee for every individual update; leave additional room when possible for downloaded packages, temporary files and a rollback.
| Scenario covered by Microsoft’s figure | Minimum free space stated | How to use the figure |
|---|---|---|
| 32-bit Windows upgrade | 16 GB | Confirm the system drive meets this threshold before an upgrade attempt. |
| 64-bit Windows upgrade | 20 GB | Confirm the system drive meets this threshold before an upgrade attempt. |
3. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
Use the Windows Update troubleshooter before deleting files or changing permissions. In Windows 8, open Control Panel, search for troubleshooting, and select the Windows Update troubleshooter if it is available in your installation. Follow its prompts with an administrator account, allow it to check the update service and related settings, and apply only the corrections it reports. Restart if it requests one, then try the same update again.

If the troubleshooter cannot run, note the message rather than treating that message as proof that 0x800700422 has a single known meaning. Continue with the preparation and cache steps below, preserving the original dialog and timestamp.
4. Reset the Windows Update cache
Microsoft notes that corrupt files in the update cache can cause errors. Resetting the cache removes downloaded update material so Windows can obtain a fresh copy; it does not delete documents in your user folders.
- Save your work and close Windows Update.
- Press
Windows key + R, enterservices.msc, and press Enter. - In the Services window, locate Windows Update. Open its context menu or properties and choose Stop. Wait until the service shows that it has stopped.
- Open File Explorer and enter
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionin the address bar. Delete the contents inside this folder, not theSoftwareDistributionfolder itself. Administrator approval may be required. - Return to Services, select Windows Update, and choose Start.
- Restart the computer, reconnect only the hardware you need, and run Windows Update again.
If Windows says a file is in use, return to services.msc and verify that Windows Update is stopped before trying again. If another service or process still holds a file, do not force-delete unrelated system files; record the message and proceed to the component-repair step or seek support.

5. Repair the component store and protected files
When the cache reset does not help, corruption in the Windows component store or protected system files may be involved. Microsoft Learn documents running DISM’s RestoreHealth operation followed by System File Checker. Run the commands in that order from an elevated Command Prompt.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Open the Start screen, type
Command Prompt, right-click the result and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt. - Enter
Dism.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /Restorehealthand press Enter. Allow it to complete; do not close the window because progress can pause for a while. - After DISM finishes, enter
Sfc.exe /Scannowand press Enter. Let the verification reach 100 percent. - Restart Windows, then retry the same update or setup operation once.
Microsoft Learn’s page documenting this sequence was updated May 6, 2026. The commands are repair operations built into Windows; they are not a substitute for identifying the exact failed operation. If either command reports an error, copy the complete text and the time it appeared. Do not repeatedly interrupt a repair at an apparent pause.
6. Investigate access-denied and service-specific failures
An access-denied message needs evidence before permissions are changed. Changing ownership or permissions broadly can create new problems and may conceal the original cause. First reproduce the failure once, note the exact time, and inspect the Component Based Servicing log.

- Press
Windows key + R, enter%Windir%logsCBSCBS.log, and press Enter. - Open the log with an editor that can handle a large text file.
- Search near the timestamp of the failed update for entries containing the operation, an access-denied indication or the component named in the dialog.
- Copy a small, time-matched excerpt for troubleshooting. Avoid posting unrelated personal information that may appear in a log.
If the log does not match the failure time, reproduce the issue and check again. Do not infer a cause from an old warning. A disabled Windows Update service, a driver conflict, insufficient storage or connectivity trouble can produce symptoms that look like permissions failures, so compare the log with the preparation checks rather than changing security settings blindly.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Retry in a controlled order
After each repair, change one condition at a time and retry the same operation. This makes the result useful: if the update succeeds after the cache reset, you have stronger evidence than if you reset the cache, changed permissions and installed several drivers at once.
- Confirm the computer is backed up, powered, online and using the correct date and time.
- Leave nonessential external hardware disconnected.
- Verify the Windows Update service is running after the cache reset.
- Run the same update or setup action and record whether it fails during download, installation or rollback.
- If it fails again, run DISM and SFC as described above, restart, and repeat the same action once.
- Compare the new timestamp with the Windows Update information and
CBS.logbefore attempting another change.
| Observed result on retry | Most useful next evidence |
|---|---|
| Download fails before installation starts | Connection stability, available storage, Windows Update service state and the exact dialog text. |
| Installation starts, then rolls back | Third-party driver changes, free space, the operation stage and timestamped component log entries. |
| Access is denied | The exact object named in the message and the matching section of CBS.log; avoid broad permission changes. |
| The code appears in another application | The application’s name, version, action that failed and its own log; Windows Update repairs may be irrelevant. |
8. Escalate with precise information
If the code remains, stop repeating the same reset. Microsoft directs users to its error-code table and support channels when general installation or upgrade fixes do not resolve a failure. Provide a compact, reproducible record:

This information lets support determine whether the nine-digit string was copied incorrectly and select the correct error-code entry. It also prevents a helper from recommending a repair for Windows Update when the original failure came from setup, activation or an unrelated application.
What the code tells you—and what it does not
Until the dialog is verified, 0x800700422 is an identifier to investigate, not a diagnosis. The safest path is the documented sequence: protect personal files, establish the operation and symptoms, run the troubleshooter, check the environment, reset only the update cache, repair the component store and protected files, and escalate with timestamped evidence. No published statistic establishes a typical success rate for this exact string, so a successful repair should be attributed to the change that actually resolved your confirmed failure.
