The string 0x8007042 is incomplete. Windows error codes in this family use another hexadecimal digit, and the missing character changes the diagnosis. Copy the complete code, including any letters or setup-phase suffix, before changing services or security settings. If the full code is 0x80070422 and it appears in Windows Update, Microsoft maps it to a Windows Update service that is disabled or stopped. The first manual fix is to set that service to Automatic, start it, restart the PC, and check for updates again.
Why “0x8007042” is not enough to diagnose
Hexadecimal Windows codes are read as complete values. The final character is not decoration: 0x80070422, 0x8007042B, and 0x8007042C point to different situations. A truncated value can therefore send you to the wrong repair procedure.

Microsoft’s documented Windows Update mapping says that 0x80070422 occurs when the Windows Update service stops working or is not running. Microsoft lists 0x8007042B separately as a Windows Setup or upgrade failure. 0x8007042C is associated with a firewall-related message in Microsoft community material, but the authoritative pages available here do not establish a definitive repair for it.
Do not treat the shared opening digits as proof that these errors have the same cause. First establish all of the following:

How to recover the complete code
Copy it from the error dialog
If the message is still visible, select the code with the mouse and copy it into a text file. If selection is unavailable, take a careful note of every character. Distinguish the number zero from the letter capital O, and the number one from the letter capital I. Windows hexadecimal codes normally use digits 0–9 and letters A–F.
Check Windows Update history
When the error came from an update attempt, open the Windows Update control panel and review the update history. Locate the failed entry and copy the full code shown with that entry. The history may provide more context than a shortened notification, including whether the failure occurred while searching, downloading, or installing.
Check Event Viewer when the dialog is gone
Press Win+R, enter eventvwr.msc, and press Enter. Use the Windows logs and the update or setup-related entries around the time of the failure to locate the complete message. Record the event text rather than relying on the shortened value in a notification. If you cannot find a matching event, stop before applying a code-specific fix and reproduce the error once so the time and message can be matched.

Manual fix for Windows Update error 0x80070422
Use this section only after confirming that the complete code is 0x80070422 and that Windows Update displayed it. These are the steps Microsoft Support documents for a disabled or stopped Windows Update service.
- Press Win+R to open the Run dialog.
- Type
services.mscand press Enter. If Windows asks for permission, approve the administrative prompt. - In the Services list, find Windows Update. The list is alphabetical, so scrolling to the entries beginning with “Windows” can be faster than searching randomly.
- Double-click Windows Update to open its Properties window.
- Find Startup type and select Automatic from the drop-down list. This tells Windows to start the service automatically rather than leaving it disabled.
- Check the Service status. If it says Stopped, select Start.
- Select Apply, then OK. Applying before closing ensures the startup-type change is written.
- Restart the computer. A restart gives the service a clean opportunity to load with the new setting.
- Open Windows Update and check for updates again. Use the same update action that produced the original error so you can compare the result.
Confirm what changed
After the restart, return to services.msc and open Windows Update’s Properties again if you need to verify the setting. The startup type should show Automatic, and the service should be running while Windows Update checks for updates. If the update now proceeds, the disabled or stopped service was consistent with Microsoft’s mapping for 0x80070422.
If Windows Update will not start
If selecting Start produces another message, write down that secondary message and the complete original code. It may identify a different dependency or permission problem, but the available Microsoft material does not establish a universal next command for every such message. Do not replace the documented service procedure with a registry cleaner or an unrelated “PC fixer,” and do not guess at registry values from a shortened code.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf the service starts but the same complete code returns after the restart, record the update name, the exact code, and the time of the failure. That record distinguishes a repeat of the same service problem from a later download, installation, or setup error.

If the full code is 0x8007042B during Windows Setup or an upgrade
0x8007042B belongs to a different Windows Setup or upgrade failure family. Do not assume that setting Windows Update to Automatic will resolve it merely because the opening digits look similar.
Use setup-specific checks
- Confirm that the message really appears during Windows Setup or an upgrade and copy any phase suffix shown after
0x8007042B. - Temporarily disable antivirus protection during the installation attempt, as Microsoft’s general setup guidance recommends. Limit the change to the installation window and follow the security product’s own instructions for disabling and restoring protection.
- Run the Windows Update troubleshooter available in the Windows 8 control-panel tools. Let it complete, note any result it reports, and then retry the setup operation.
- Check that the account performing the upgrade has the permissions required by the setup program. If a permissions message appears, preserve its exact wording rather than treating it as evidence of a Windows Update-service failure.
The setup phase suffix matters. Keep it with the code when searching your own logs or asking for support; two failures that share the base value can occur at different phases and require different investigation.

0x8007042C is not interchangeable with 0x80070422. It is described as firewall-related in Microsoft community material, but the authoritative documentation available for this guide does not provide a verified, complete repair sequence. Because changing firewall services or rules without the exact message can reduce protection or address the wrong component, do not apply an unverified command from a generic error-code list.

A practical decision path
- Stop at the truncated value. Treat
0x8007042as incomplete, not as a diagnosis. - Locate the complete code. Use the dialog, update history, or Event Viewer and preserve every suffix.
- Identify the context. Separate Windows Update from Windows Setup or an upgrade.
- Choose the matching branch. Use the Windows Update service steps only for confirmed
0x80070422; use setup checks for confirmed0x8007042B; seek a code-specific authoritative match for0x8007042C. - Retry once under the same conditions. A repeatable result is more useful than changing several unrelated settings at once.
- Record the outcome. Note the exact code, message, update or setup phase, and what changed before the retry.
Common mistakes that make the problem harder
- Filling in the missing digit by guesswork: similar-looking codes have different meanings.
- Starting with a registry edit: no registry change is part of Microsoft’s documented fix for confirmed
0x80070422. - Applying a Windows Update fix to Windows Setup:
0x8007042Bis a separate setup or upgrade family. - Changing firewall settings for an incomplete code: the truncated value does not establish that the firewall is involved.
- Disabling antivirus permanently: Microsoft’s setup guidance describes a temporary installation measure, not a permanent security configuration.
- Changing several services at once: it removes the information needed to tell which change affected the result.
- Ignoring the Windows build: Windows 8 editions and builds can present different control-panel wording, so preserve the exact labels shown on the affected machine.
Windows 8 interface and version considerations
The documented Windows Update-service procedure uses the Services console, which is opened with services.msc and the Win+R shortcut. If a label or button differs slightly on your Windows 8 edition, use the complete error text and the service name Windows Update as the anchors rather than selecting a similarly named service.
The official pages consulted for these codes do not provide a Windows-8-only explanation for the truncated string. That means the exact build and message remain important. A result documented for 0x80070422 should not be generalized to every Windows 8 update failure, and a result from a setup phase should not be generalized to ordinary update checking.
When to stop troubleshooting manually
Stop and gather more information when the code remains incomplete, the service refuses to start with a new error, or the same code returns after the documented restart. At that point, keep a copy of the complete dialog, the update history entry or Event Viewer record, the Windows 8 edition and build, and the exact step at which the failure occurs. This evidence is more useful than repeating unrelated repair utilities.
No physical product is required by the cited Microsoft procedures. The first-line action for confirmed 0x80070422 is a built-in Services setting; the setup branch uses built-in troubleshooting and permission checks. A third-party utility cannot substitute for identifying the complete code and its context.
