An application or setup program
If one installer fails while other Windows updates work, note the installer’s path and the destination folder. The process may be supplying an invalid parameter, or it may lack access to the destination, a temporary directory, or a required registry entry.
Effective Access on an SMB network share
If the error appears while Windows 8 displays effective access for a shared folder, this is a separate Windows networking issue. It should not be treated as a general Windows Update failure. The documented workaround for Windows 8 is to map the share to a drive letter. Prepare before changing anything

- Disconnect only the network drive or removable device directly implicated by the error; do not randomly disable security software or services.

Repair Windows Update and installation-related failures
1. Run the built-in Windows Update troubleshooter
- Open Control Panel.
- Choose Troubleshooting, then Fix problems with Windows Update under System and Security.
- Allow the troubleshooter to detect problems and apply the changes it recommends.
- Restart Windows if it requests a restart, then retry the update or installation that failed.

2. Run System File Checker from an elevated Command Prompt
- From the Windows 8 Start screen, type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter
sfc /scannowand press Enter. - Wait for verification to finish. Do not close the window or power off the computer while the scan is running.
- Restart Windows and retry the operation.
System File Checker checks protected Windows files and reports whether it found integrity violations and whether it could repair them. If it cannot complete or says that some files could not be repaired, save the exact message. Repeating the same command without addressing the reported condition is unlikely to change the result.
3. Check the Windows Update service
- Press
Windows+R, typeservices.msc, and press Enter. - Find Windows Update in the list.
- Check its Status. If it is stopped, select Start. If it is already running, use Restart only when the service controls expose that option.
- Open Properties and note the Startup type rather than changing it arbitrarily. A managed or organization-owned computer may have a policy that controls this setting.
- Close Services, restart Windows, and try the update again.
A running service does not guarantee that update files are healthy, that the update server is reachable, or that your account can access every required location. It simply rules out one common service-state failure.
4. Verify access to the locations used by the failing operation
For an installation or update that names a local path, check that the account running the operation can open the source and destination folders. If the message identifies a registry entry, the account or service involved must have the required access there as well. Use the security properties for the specific object and make the smallest necessary correction; do not grant broad “Everyone” or full-control permissions as a blanket remedy.

When the failing process runs as a service, its identity may differ from the account you used to sign in. A permission that works interactively may still deny the service. Ask the administrator who manages the computer to confirm the service identity and its required access before changing protected permissions.
5. Retry once, then capture the new result
After the troubleshooter, SFC scan, service check, and targeted permission review, retry the same operation. If the code changes, record the new code rather than continuing with the old diagnosis. A changed message can show that one layer was repaired while another remains.
Fix the Windows 8 SMB effective-access problem
Use this section only when the error occurs while viewing effective access for a folder on an SMB share, such as a shared folder hosted by another Windows computer or a network storage device.

Map the share to a drive letter
- Open File Explorer and select This PC.
- On the Computer tab, choose Map network drive.
- Select an unused drive letter.
- Enter the share path in the form supplied by the administrator, such as
\servershare. - Use Reconnect at sign-in only if the share should persist, and use Connect using different credentials when the share requires a different account.
- Choose Finish, authenticate if prompted, and test the mapped drive.
Mapping the share is a documented workaround for the Windows 8 effective-access behavior. It does not change the share’s permissions or make an account an administrator; it provides another access path for the resource.
Check both layers of network permissions
Ask the share administrator to verify the account at both the SMB share level and the underlying NTFS folder level. The effective permission is constrained by the least-permissive layer. Also check that the credentials used for the mapped drive are the intended ones; Windows may retain a connection under another account.
Do not present the Windows 8.1/Windows Server 2012 R2 update as a fix for Windows 8. Microsoft explicitly limits that fix’s applicability. If the computer is actually running Windows 8.1, verify its edition and update state before considering that component-specific update through Microsoft’s support documentation.

If the code is really 0x80070005
0x80070005 is the access-denied code. Identify the exact object being denied before changing anything:
- Local file or folder: inspect the Security tab and the account that launches the program.
- Registry entry: determine which installer or service needs access and back up the relevant data before an administrator changes permissions.
- Network share: verify credentials, share permissions, NTFS permissions, and whether the mapped connection uses a different account.
- Windows service: check the service logon identity and the files, folders, or registry entries it must read or write.
Access-denied errors can also result from an incorrect path, a locked object, or a policy restriction. Granting more rights without confirming the object can create a security exposure and still leave the original failure untouched.
Common mistakes that make this error harder to fix
- Using the malformed code as a search term: search separately for the confirmed code and the operation that failed.
- Confusing “parameter incorrect” with “access denied”:
0x80070057and0x80070005are not interchangeable. - Applying an unverified registry script: there is no single universal registry tweak supported for every occurrence of these codes.
- Running SFC without elevation: a non-administrator Command Prompt may not be able to inspect or repair protected files.
- Changing service startup settings at random: record the original state and follow the requirement of the specific component.
- Assuming a network-share issue is Windows Update: the SMB effective-access limitation has its own workaround and version boundary.
- Ignoring the exact path: permissions and configuration must be checked on the object named by the failing operation, not on an unrelated folder.
When manual repair does not resolve it
If the same confirmed code remains after the relevant steps, collect the complete dialog text, Windows edition and architecture, update or installer name, path, troubleshooter result, SFC result, service status, and any account or share details that can be disclosed safely. Use Microsoft’s official support channels or installation media appropriate to that exact edition and architecture. Do not install a cleaner or registry utility on the assumption that Microsoft requires one, and do not use recovery media from an unknown edition or source.
